Not sure if I'll be in the country or not, but I've been keeping an eye on it.

I bet it won't be until later in the year. Last year's was October.
But that's about a different event than the subject here.

cjd- I hope you are around.

              'Theme builds'

Lots of the events have had a 'theme', or target, to be an optional for-fun competition. Talks of small-speaker shootouts, or biggest monkey-coffins.

There was a recent thread over on PE talking of the cars known as Rat-Rods.
I therefore suppose this in reference to speakers to the attendees:

Whattaya say we take this on? Who can make the best performing ugly-chic set of speakers? No carpenters need apply. Just misjoint some boxes with hot glue and come join in the fun!!! 8O

The more creative, the hi- errr... LOWER the score! We'll need a set of inhonorable-mentions, and rate things in the red.

Sound like a fun idea?

                ...
But some of these rat rods, are truly works of art in and of themselves. They may LOOK like junk, but there is a TON of time that has went into them, and as a total package, they look great.

                Here's an example:

This Dodge Sedan diesel rat rod won a CAR & Driver award with knocks your socks ingenuity & style. This is the best of "Rat Style" in a Rat Rod Diesel.

It would be fun, though, to build a set of speakers, cover them with some dark wood paneling from the 70's, mismatching the joints, so that you can see the box underneath, and then bend over some of the nails used to hold the paneling on. Then create the most slapped together crossover, held together with a combination of baling wire, black tape, and duct tape, and then tape the crossover to the side, and call the whole thing a speaker.

There's a lot of potential there...

I won't be in attendance but I'd like to see a theme of ultrabudget cross-overs. Best pair of speakers with less than $25 in cross-over parts (or $35 or $50 as deemed appropriate). Not that I think cross-overs are bad, but think it would be an interesting reversal and force designers to think about the simplest way to get some drivers to play nice together.

Except sometimes that's just not possible.
If it works, that's one thing, but sometimes highly unlikely.

Yeah, I sometimes think any budget categories cause people to make poor decisions. I recall one design that simply had sound issues, and the response was "well, I couldn't fix them and keep it in budget so..."

That said, I'd guess that a single-driver would be the winner in a "<$35 crossover" category.

Yeah, like a full range homemade ESL? Of course, there's the power supply and step up transformer, but TECHNICALLY there's no crossover parts!
