Tips on getting rid of excess glue on plywood

    Hey folks,

Any tips on how to get rid of excess glue from plywood without sanding through the veneer? Tried the tape and plastic wrap technique for edge free mitered joints and got excess glue I need to get rid of.

    Thx!

Get a wood scraper. They generally have a somewhat sharp edge. Just be careful though could take off more wood as well if you don't hold the right angle. Other then that?

Scraper works best. A real wood working scraper, not a paint scraper. But, still going to be tough not damaging veneer.

Is a wood scraper also called a card scraper? Looks like they need to be burnished regularly to work effectively as well? Good excuse to buy a new tool!

Yep, that's another name. Scrapers are cool!!

Time honored tool, used literally for centuries, before that newfangled sandpaper stuff was invented and got popular. Takes a bit of learning the knack for sharpening and maintaining... search around for some articles on how to do that right.

The cool thing, is that they take off such a precise amount at a time, and they are totally flat, so they will shave the surface/finish to that totally flat reference as well. No cupping, no rounding corners or edges off... When properly sharpened, and used right, you can shave off nearly transparently thin shavings of wood... Probably one of the better ways to shave JUST enough but not too much. Might be a bit tricky by an edge, but should work well. Practice first!

A scraper came in very handy leveling the finish on my too many layers of Shellac finish project... a little orange peeling, a little run or two, you could easily just shave off the imperfections without taking much else off the good stuff. They're very handy...

Here are a couple of online videos on the subject of card scrapers, aka cabinet scrapers:

That is one of the better videos I've seen on sharpening a card scraper, but he makes it look very easy. Sharpening is a card scraper is an art form. Using it is also. It does require some flexing of the card in your hands to create shavings instead of dust.

It can be quite difficult to create a flat surface with a card scraper. A cabinet scraper (different than a card scraper) does a better job at creating a flat surface. I happen to use this one:
