It's getting to be that time of year when Charlie Laub pulls things together for a DIY meeting in the Sacramento area. Info isn't up on the web site yet, so...
From his email:
I have reserved a venue for the Spring DIY Meeting. We will be back at the Stonegate Country Club in Davis, which we used for our Fall 2009 meeting. The meeting will be held on Saturday, May 7th, beginning around 9am. The hall is reserved until 6pm.
Unfortunately, the space we have used in the past in the Warehouse Ministries church in Roseville is no longer available, as they have moved and their new space is used every Saturday and Sunday.
We will try to simplify the set up this time, with only one playback system. I'd like to get people's thoughts about the format with pre-determined track(s) so that there is some music that is played on all the systems. We can do mostly pre-determined tracks, only one predetermined track, or none. For this meeting, we will be trying to standardize the playback level for all speakers so that hearing fatigue (or damage) after hours of listening is not an issue. We might have a lunch break with no music for one hour to help with this issue.
I will try to provide some light refreshments but not meals. There is a full refrigerator and a nice Weber gas barbecue grill available for our use onsite. A strip mall located about 200 yards away has a supermarket, a low-key Mexican restaurant, a low-key Chinese restaurant, a Pizza place, and a coffee shop. You can quickly get food, grill something that you bring or buy, or order pizza.
To cover the rental fee for the hall, there will be a $10 entrance fee that includes the chips and soda.
There is wireless internet access at the club.
There may be a talk during the lunch break on some music or speaker design issue, but this has not yet been arranged. There are not formal lecture facilities such as a projection system, etc. so this may or may not happen.
There will be a raffle of donated items such as drivers, etc. Please bring these to the event if you have something to donate.
I will be sending out more information as the date approaches and ask for "preview pics" of systems that people are bringing since this worked nicely last time. I hope to see you there! Get those projects started!!!
=============================================
I've been in contact with Charlie and plan to attend and bring a playback setup with computer playback and DAC including a CD transport, though I think Charlie wants to stick to a specific set of cuts and samples for demonstration, but it sounds to me like things are in up in the air a bit still. As I get updates from him, I'll post them here. I probably won't be brining a speaker system, unless it's the equivalent of the unfinished symphony (like the Modula Xtreme's without the implemented midrange updates). Work is still 7 days a week, so little time for any progress on that front. But the big program should be wrapped up that week, and I should be able to get that weekend off (cross fingers!).
