Bob Cordell's new book: "Designing Audio Power Amplifiers"

600 pages and, from the TOC, it looks pretty complete. He even gets into zero-feedback and Class D designs although they aren't necessarily his favorites. Sorry, nothing for the toob guys.

Looks quite thorough. I just might have to add this to my reading list.

That feeling when things are finally going right. Yeah, that one.

Thanks for the link. Speaking of classic designers, just found out that Douglas Self was a key architect in the Cambridge Audio XD amplifiers, both integrated and the 840W power amp. Self's last book is a good reference, too, though I've had quibbles with him in the past, at least he finally got on the extended beta bipolar bandwagon (Toshiba and on Semi copies).

Have to check that out, maybe an eBook?

Yeah, Charles Hansen had a few comments about Self's stubbornness on certain issues in the DIY thread about Bob's book.

Congratulations on your excellent book, Bob. I got my copy a few days ago and have enjoyed it thoroughly. Its layout makes it easy to read and your methods of explanation give me a different way of thinking about how amps work. Very well done! Cheers, Ken Hi Ken, I really appreciate the nice...

Edit: oh and Bob will have copies of the book at RMAF. Don't know if he'll be selling them for full price or the discounted Amazon price though.

Interesting- he'll have a room? Guess I should check out the thread. I followed some of Cordell's stuff in the 90s, borrowed liberally his from the front end of his early feedforward design for IR FETs, but modified it a lot, for work I did for someone else. I should probably make an image of that and post just for fun. For good reasons or bad, I was always more into the single ended differential approach back then than the attempts at full complementary designs, which usually had poorer DC stability and AC parameters not as balanced as hoped for, due to the parameter differences between NPN and PNP transistors. A rock solid DC coupled design with monolithic JFET pairs in the front end always sounded better to me.

I assume so. He has put on workshops at shows in the past, along with Peter Smith and Darren Kuzma.

I met Bob yesterday afternoon at RMAF- nice guy, it was good chatting with him. Bought the book, and mine's autographed!

Saw a number of kind of typical systems at the show, with unfortunately some of the typical issues and strange audiophile program material choices.

BUT, finished up the day on a high note, going into a room near by the Kimber Cable guys, drawn in by the Hiromi Uhera pouring forth from a pair of the smaller TAD speakers- the Bel Canto electronics were doing a good job controlling the bottom end and delivering the basic goods, though the midrange timber was so-so and the high end dry and a tad gritty- still, it was the most enjoyable listening experience, due to the control and resolution of the TAD speakers and the delectable (and familiar) program material - let's hear it for the Hiromi channel!
