    Moderator to be somewhat

    Hey guys and gals,

As many of you know, I've had a bit of a back problem since Xmas time this last Holiday season. Well, the specialist I visited last Thursday to review my MRI regarding treatment options said that as usual, I'm a bit of an over achiever, and have a lumbar disk hernia "that's as big as the state of Texas". That is a direct quote.

So, considering options, I started pre-op preparations last Thursday, and will go into surgery this Tuesday afternoon for a "lumbar micro discectomy". 8O It's not nearly as nasty as it might sound, last only an hour and a half, and the prognosis is quite good that I'll be pretty much good as new in a couple of months.

I probably won't be on the board as much as I like most of next week- heck, I haven't been in the last few weeks, anyway, because the meds to cope with my current condition wipe me out a bit. But things should be back to our wacky definition of normal in the fairly near future! :B

In the mean time, I'm sure ThomasW will pick up the slack, and I'll be following events as often as possible.

    Best regards,

    Jon

Does that mean you can't tote MDF panels and get on with the LS project?

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Yep, Hank, you got that right.

So we'll switch to Baltic Birch. 8)

Now I'll have to concentrate my modest engineering resources on how to build the lightest possible stiff and dead speaker cabinets (better than being a dead stiff, you know!

Thanks for the well wishes, John!

As long as you know this is an unexcused absense. Locals are available, as well as laptops and wireless adapters.

Best of luck with it Jon, we'll hold the fort down. Might even have to make Pete a temp mod if Jack's not around. Oh, wait, let's not loose our heads about this, lol.

            Luck!

Naw, if you hear me going on and on about an old amp I designed for a company based on a Cordell circuit that I made sound better by REMOVING the feedforward error correction and used English Lateral MOSFETs instead of American Vertical MOSFETs and the whole key to it was improving the first stage JFET cascode, THEN you'll know it's the meds..... :B

Or if you hear me speaking in positive terms regarding Crown DC300A amplifiers, or BOSE 801's or 901's....

anyway, you get the idea- any anomalous behavior is to be questioned... which considering how anamolous MOST of my behavior is, could prove to be a problem making a positive ID...

when in doubt check with ThomasW, as his 30+ years acquaintance with yours truly is likely to be reliable in the matter... :W

BTW, todays new software recommendation is Version 7 of the Opera Browser- contains no Microsoft product, and HTGuide works perfectly with it... what else do you need to know? :B

Jon's milking this bad back thing for all the sympathy he can get. Just eat some more Vicodan and wash them down with a slug of Jack D's #5 best. Then you won't care about ANY pain......

Normal? NORMAL?!? WHO ARE WE KIDDING?

(BTW, no anti inflamatories in the last five days (pre op) and no Vicodin in the last 20 hours (just plain stupidity... where's that bottle? )

Thomas has got a good point- the procedure he underwent (and several friends at work recently) is a laminectomy; which has about a 4-5" incision in the good old days, about 2" these days, and removes the lamina at the back of the spine behind the nerve bundle, as well as the bulging bit of disk pad. I'm just having the "wimpy" surgery with a 1-1/2" incision, and only a small little bit of bone is drilled out for access.

                          Approach for Microdiscectomy

This weekend I read on the web that there are a few practices offering an endomicro version which only uses an incision of 4-5 mm, and has some rather specialized "burrowing" tools to get into the affected area. A few doctors are touting this as being superior to the current microdiscectomy, but the studies I've seen quoted indicated that the post-op morbidity isn't actually any better than for the standard micro discectomy. But I could have flown to LA and gotten one, but where's the sympathy factor in a 4 mm incision??

Time to go find that bottle of Vicodin.....

4-5mm? That's not an incision, THIS is an incision! As I said to my not-unpleasant-to-look-at dermatologist lady while she was doing Moh's microsurgery on a basal cell carcinoma on my shoulder while she sang "Don't Fence Me In", (TRUE STORY) I said, as I usually do whenever someone tells me of an afflicition:
                                TEQUILA IS GOOD FOR THAT.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Jon!

Oh man, Jon! 8O Sorry to hear about this. I hope everything goes well - good luck partner. Enjoy those Vicodin. I prefer mine with Jose Cuervo Gold.

PS. I do feel your pain - literally. I was fortunate enough not to require surgery for my "bulging disc", just lots of rehab.

                                        He survived

Spoke with Jon, surgery was successful. Most of the painful disc symptoms are gone, Now he's just sore from the surgery itself. Should be home sometime today. He's been told to go shopping for a table saw no later than this W/E since he's been falling behind in his woodworking projects. 8)

                                            Hi Guys and Gals,

Beleive me, I feel like a new man! Well, maybe a new man with a very sore lower back. Well, maybe like the man I was a year or so ago with a sore lower back. But believe me, this is a huge improvement- the sciatic leg pain and related issues are all gone, and the weakness is subsiding. Plus, now I can get a real nights sleep, 8) instead of the more typical 3-5 hours I've been averaging the last month! As Thomas described his post operative experience, I'm elated! :B

Well, Sears delivers on saws, but it may still be a little early to be assembling one, unless I can get Yvonne and Elaine to give me a hand with that! Of course, Thomas could always fly out and lend me a hand... :W

One key was walking around as much as I could yesterday - by this AM, when I walked down stairs, I actually didn't have to think at all about what I was doing- that may not sound like much, but it's huge progress, believe me!

Now I'm going to get cleaned up and see about going shopping for a gift basket to say "Thank you" to Yvonne for her help during this week. Y'all hang tight, thing's will be back to normal around here pretty quick!

                                            Best regards,

                                            Jon

Well, I'm probably going to have no backing at all for any sympathy at this point- I should have brought my digital camera, then I could document that as I'm writing this from the 14th floor of the Faontinebleau Hilton in Miami, I'm right on the beach front... 8O

'course, wallowing in the surf isn't something that would appeal to me yet, it's just the idea of being here that's kind of cool... 8)

Well, if ya gotta go to work, there are worse places...

Here, I think English is a second or third language... I tried to get a paper in the hotel lobby, and the first two I picked up were in Spanish....

Anyway, hello to everyone from Sunny FL, and yes, the back is getting better.... why, I actually thought about speakers for at least 20 seconds yesterday.... I'm going to try to work up to a full five minutes by tomorrow! :B

But the weather is lovely out here, and some of the scenery isn't too bad either! 8O And I'm not talking about the beaches, but what's on the beaches!

No, actaully, Miami beach front wasn't on the Dr's prescription- but since he told me a lot of docs and lawyer's ease back into things after 4-5 days, I thought, what the heck, maybe I stand a chance, too! So far, it's worked out fine- I just don't go out for the long dinners in a Cuban restaurant somewhere on the south beach- I just go back to my room to rest. But it's all good.....

You don't want to rush the stress on the disk, because before adequate scarring and strenthening is complete, excessive weight can cause more problems with an additional hernia. They say about 3-5% have this problem, and require follow up surgery; I like being in a select group, but I don't want to be in that one.

I figure with luck I can do some test panels and ligher work, and maybe recruit for pay one or two of Yvonne's teenage sons to do some heavy lifting. So, who knows?

Then again, the careful use of strengthening exercises may slightly accelerate the recovery- personally, I'd like to try some of those Danish oil techniques for upper body strengthening, also..... 8O

The gal pictured is part of a "network" of Florida area models... judging from the women I saw out at dinner last night, there's a lot like that loose around here... though probably "loose" isn't the word. Saw a lot of couples out for dinner; they seemed to fit into either one of two clases- old retired couples, and successful older men (older than me) with women 20 or more years there junior... and these weren't their daughters (I sometimes get some nasty looks when taking my 18 year old daughter out to dinner, but then she often looks like mid to late 20's. )

If it's occasional, it's most likely a protection problem - no not condoms. At some point in the 'net environment, the imagery from the originating site is being blocked. I'll get this every so often posting pics to the TTP. If it's EVERY time, then there is something more substantial in play and I'll leave that to the "experts". FWIW, IE v5.5 is still pretty current (I think).

                                                                                        Hope this helps a bit.
