    ACI SV10 subwoofer 56$

Has anyone used this driver before? my friend needs a new decent sounding sub for his house and i was thinking one of these would be a possible place to start...
ACI SV10 Treated Paper Cone Subwoofer 56$

The SV10 Subwoofer is a good choice for home or autosound applications. The speakers were custom made for Audio Concepts, Inc. by NCA Laboratories of California.

    The SV10 Features:

16 mm linear one way excursion!
High strength, 16 gauge steel basket encapsulated in a corrosion resistant polyester coating.
    Double 42 ounce magnets
    Nomex spider with extra travel
A glass reinforced plastic damper ring supports the spider and elevates it to allow for extreme excursion. Greater excursion than virtually any cast frame!
1.6" long high temperature voice coil
    Heavy, non-resonant, pressed pulp cone
    Large Sanoprene roll surround
    Bumped Back Plate
Aerospace adhesives and thread locked screws used in construction
Gold plated 1/4" spade terminals for solid connections
    Made in USA

    Suggested Sealed Alignments:

0.7 cubic foot sealed box for and F3 of 40Hz in home. A plate amplifier with a boost on the low end should push it down to the lower 30's.

When used in a car, assuming 6dB of cabin gain and same sealed box, this woofer should get down to 20Hz.

    Suggested Vented Alignments:

1.7 cubic feet with a 3" diameter vent by 15" long. F3 in this box is 25Hz with a slight boost on the low end. If used with a plate amp that has a boost, it might seem boomy in this vented box.

or does anyone know of a better driver around this price range?

    Thanks Guys

I bought a pair in 2001 or 2002 and have been using them in a roughly 20 liter ported box to nice effect. There are very, very few other 10" (or even 12" or 15") drivers that produce the strong very low extension of the SV10.

The downside (or upside if this is desirable) is that above 100 Hz the SV10 is basically worthless. The response above 100 Hz is extremely ragged and sparse. But below 100 Hz it's a champ. The price is right. The SV10 lacks the refinement, quickness and accuracy of an equivalently sized Scanspeak woofer, for instance, but it sure provides the low extension and heft. The f3 measured around 28 Hz which is pretty good for a 20 liter box.

I'm not sure the SV10 would work extremely well in a sealed box. Even in the ported box at higher SPL's (108 dB maybe) the driver bottomed out from too much excursion.
