    Improves the sound...

This topic has been covered at length, so a forum search is a good idea. Use the word damping instead of fill

It makes the speaker sound fuller.

J/K... it dampens vibrations inside the cabinet, and it has the side effect of making the enclosure act like it's larger than it really is. I think...

Sometimes it makes things sound worse. Especially if you overstuff.

At that point all you can do is kill it and harvest the liver.

It is a tool for tweaking - it can cut down on internal reflections/resonances - sometimes it can tame a sharp upturn peak in a bandpass or other "ported" (i.e. TL variants also) alignment.

You usually can't build too small and just stuff the heck out of the box to fix it.

You can use Unibox to model a woofer in various size boxes, then play with the fill setting to see what affect it has on the frequency response. Unibox has options for "no fill", "walls covered" and "heavy fill".

Actual tests are easy to do and are the most revealing.

So how much is overstuffing? I got the Acousta Stuf and it's hard to judge how much to stuff in ops:

Start with a heavy stuff, listen to a few songs you know. Then take about half of it out, and listen again. That should give you a baseline.

Sealed boxes are filled at a rate of 0.5-1.5lbs/cu ft

If you have access to a kitchen scale they're really handy. Add damping an oz or so at a time to a small box.

Sealed boxes are 'filled' (no not literally) with damping. Typically the wall of ported boxes are lined with material. Keep the damping material away from the port as it will interfere with it's operation.
