    FEM/BEM software for OSX

    Are there any competent FEM/BEM software packages available for the Mac OSX platform? I'm specifically interested in acoustic and electro/mechanical analysis.

    I know Mige0 (diyaudio) has had great success with the AxiDriver software, however thats only available on Windows.

    Thanks,
    Thadman

    Haven't come across one, but haven't been looking hard, either. You might check the software listings at Apple's web site- they're pretty comprehensive.

      You could check out Comsol Multiphysics. I haven't tried the Mac version, but the Windows-edition works surprisingly well through Parallels Desktop.

      Here is a (very) simple simulation I did to assess the room response variations with my two subwoofers in the dorm living room. As you can see from the pictures the room is not a simple shoebox shape. The Listening area was the area on the left and the location of the subwoofers is evident from the picture showing the 50Hz response.

      70 Hz :

        Very nice, but I suspect not a casual purchase! I requested the introduction CD on acoustics module.

          I didn't see any limitations with regards to price :W Sadly, I have not had the opportunity to really learn how to use the software properly yet. I have some ideas for things that I want to simulate, but it will have to wait till I have the time to sit down and learn things properly.

            I don't know what "FEM/BEM software package" refers to. I assume it's a type of audio analysis software?

            I tried the demo of the "Electoacoustics Toolbox " software and liked it. They have different options to fit your needs and price point. I ended up getting ARTA audio analysis software for Windows, since it was more what I was looking for. But, I always miss my Mac while I'm using it.

            But, you're probably looking for something else.

              FEM = Finite Element Method
              BEM= Boundary Element Method

                COMSOL is rather cheap for a commerical FEM application, but still in the 10kEuro range. Also, COMSOL, is somewhat more flexible, due to the multiphysics nature, as a result you really have to know what you are doing. Producing results is one step, producing realistic results takes more skill.

                For an open source alternative you can look at Elmer. However, this takes even more endurance to get starting.
