SEAS Excel T29CF-002 Crescendo on the cheap!

Looking over at Madisound, the current price of a Seas Crescendo is $336.
Free support for loudspeaker projects, sourcing OEM speaker building supplies, and passive crossover design. We sell raw speaker drivers (tweeters, woofers, subwoofer, midrange drivers, full range drivers), speaker kits, amplifiers, capacitors, resistors, and inductors.

However, if you go over to the specials page, they have the Seas Magnum for a nicely discounted $195! (Solen lists their price as C$370 each!)

Now from what I can tell, the motor's are virtually identical. Actually, the Magnum specs state an Xmax of 1.4mm p-p, compared to the Crescendo's 1.0mm p-p, so the Magnum's may even be better.

If you prefer the Crescendo's soft dome, you can pick up one of those for $33, putting you $100 in front of a "stock" Crescendo.

If the base magnetic systems are that similar, then the difference in Xmax is most likely due to the VC length, which is specific to the replacment VC assembly. Both are underhung, with 0.7 mm Xmax for the Magnum and 0.5 mm Xmax for the Crescendo.

Both would appear to have some waveguide like effects from the deep front plate. Haven't heard or measured either one.

Is there a technical reason why the Magnum would be more suited to a shorter voice-coil? Power dissipation of the metal dome?

If the domes are different diameters (25 mm/29mm), wouldn't the voice coils be different diameters as well, requiring a slightly different motor? I wouldn't think that the diaphragms would be interchangeable. Are they?

I just realized that (according to the specs) both voice coils are 26mm.

So assuming you already got these tweets, how do you like them?

Speaking of specials at Madisound. They have put some Scanspeak Illuminator tweeters on sale. I am particularly interested in the D2004/6020-00 (3/4" soft dome). Does anyone have experience/opinions about these sale tweeters?

The D2004/6020-00 is not capable of quite as high output levels as its big brother, but I'm ordering some more soon for another project- an Ardent derived CC, sort of a big brother to the NeoD CC.

The only thing to watch out for is the impedance- like many SS tweeters, nominal 4 ohm, closer to 3 over most of the range. Weeny amplifiers need not apply.

Beautifully built, but it will be several months before I'll be hearing them.
