Anyone want to try plasma drivers?

Plasma ion tweeters are derived from singing arc invented in the 1900s using a carbon arc lamp. The plasma speaker works by moving air via changing the temperature in its chamber.

    Pros: They sound great.

Cons: The ozone they create will kill you.

If I'm not mistaken Acapella is not the only German company. Lansche Audio is also offering loudspeakers with a plasma tweeter. Ozone production is said to be minimal. Maybe a copier is already producing more O3 .

Not forget to mention that it can be build yourself another German site

I don't think the benefits outweigh the negatives

In my research I've found that dual-electrode models (continuous arc gap) make far, far less ozone than corona-discharge type models. Corona discharge (single electrode operating at RF, which is like most of the existing designs out there) will make a lot of ozone.

FWIW using tungsten (or thoriated tungsten) welding electrodes will greatly increase your electrode life.

How much do these cost to DIY? I think it'd be really fun to build a pair.....

From a Nelson Pass interview http://www.stereophile.com/interviews/1191pass/

Fabulous device, but it put out ozone, and after some extensive exposure to the ozone I found myself lacking oxygen in my bloodstream...It was a year before I could go near a copy machine.

I'd bet the design that Pass heard was a single point corona discharge type system. I've got a setup here that you have to dial in to its resonant frequency before use. As you approach it each individual electrode starts to show corona discharge and it makes a LOT of ozone. Tremendous amounts, so much that the nasal passages start to object. Once it arcs over and establishes a plasma field between the two electrodes, ozone production goes way down to the point of being barely noticeable. I'm sure there's some physicist out there that could explain why.
