    Scan-Speak Illuminator

There's a good review in Voice Coil of both the 5" and 7" Illuminator woofers.

The motor works as expected, very linear over the full excursion. The suspension is the main limiting factor; however, it still allows for good linear excursion.5.7mm for the 5" and 6.4mm for the 7". This is where most drivers have issues because of the motor or suspension falling too short of the x-max number. Both favor a lower crossover point than the comparable Revelators and have good parameters.

The things that are preventing me from using the Illuminator 5" and 7" when comparing it to the regular Revelator varieties are as follows:

        less sensitive
peaky top end (LR2 more of a challenge)
no improvement in linear and non linear distortion
        costs more

For some cases I think so. The rear side is very open lending itself well to dipole operation. The motor also will remain linear over the full excursion so if you play things loud and / or need dynamic capability it's a good option.

Actually the top end is fairly well-behaved in the 7" measurements I just did. I use the 4-ohm version to squeeze out more output.

                  Thanks Rick.

Someday I'll check them out. Did it have the classic SS impedance blip around 800hz-1k?
