a good nearfield design?

I'm having to downsize my setup. my sony pearl projector, silverstar screen, pair of the statements, all got to go. moving to a smaller place with smaller budget. however one thing i will not sacrifice is sound. i'm willing to spend up to little above 1k to build a pair of nearfields that can make sure i won't miss the statements too much... is there even a near field diy design? i need something that's going to be no more than 4 feet away from me. or something to that number when i put them on my computer desk...

I'm going to be building a 2.5 way version of the Microbe for what sounds like the same application, so that could be a way to go.

Perhaps Jed's D4 or R4 would work well also?
