    Desperately needed here…good industrial design!

I've been lurking here for quite sometime...
The designs here no doubt sound terrific and the craftsmanship in the finish work of the speaker cabinets is in most cases superb.

Why then do the finished speakers look so horrible... like "monkey coffins"!

Surely there is the talent here to present (and advocate) good industrial design instead of these bleak rectangular boxes that remind one of Soviet-era housing projects.

    C'mon...you can do better!

Let me guess... you are at school for industrial design and willing to lend a hand to those in need, for a very modest fee. Either that or you must be a really negative person (trying to remain polite here) to actually create a user account to come in here and say that.

    Thanks for your constructive contributions!

Pity the poor monkey that gets one of my boxes as a coffin. Such a horrible fate!

Oh. Please design "good industrial design" then.

Dang, look at my Macbook Pro - it's recangular. What a throwback! Junk. That iPhone! More junk. More soviet era block housing.

Then too, consider the audience. If I get fancy, who can build it? A few hard-core folks have built some of the less recangular cabinets - whether it's the translam projects or the gemcut baffles.

Sure, I can design to whatever standard you might choose.

Just because it is a rectangle does not make for bad design. Because it doesn't use fancy materials or shapes, does not make for bad design.

Use of all sorts of shiny plastic and funky curves, doesn't make it good design.

Most people have no clue what makes for good design. Let alone good industrial design. Even people that supposedly DO this for a living.

My Dead Monkey is quite happy in there.

Jeez, he often sounds just like the Eagles, a symphony orchestra, explosions during action movies and occasionally smooth sax riffs from Van Morrison. :sn

Yep, can't argue with the fact that physics often dictates the nature of the devices we build to accurately reproduce sound.

          Life's full of compromises :W

How many commercial designs have you seen with exotic shapes that don't sound all that great? Exotic shapes don't guarantee good sound.

Oh, but they MUST sound good... and we all know what happens when you apply a little psycho to your acoustics.

What a lame post. Either he hasn't seen many of the speakers that have been built, such as MuaDibb's gorgeous D4s

Don't bother Ryan. A troll is a troll. The pejorative 'monkey coffins' isn't even original. I first heard it about 10 years ago from a controversial (read big mouthed) designer who liked to rant late at night when he'd had a bit too much wine. His own designs, in my opinion, looked like giant phallic symbols and I wouldn't want them in my room. If the OP wants to show us how to do it right, he's welcome to build some speakers and we'll be glad to critique his design.

I have to agree kind of silly for someone to come on who has never posted a design of his own and make such a negative comment about the speakers being built here. I have to agree with the comment our speakers here are built purely for sound quality with as little compromise that we can get in.

Well, the typical ad hominem arguments are being expressed here...
(and please spare me a picture of yet another warmed-over Mission-style cliche)

If you want to see at least half decent speaker cabinet design, here are two examples:

I've always thought many of the Rocket speakers looked really nice. Unfortunately, the sound left a lot to be desired, IMHO.
