Ok... I admit it, I check Zaph's blog pretty often, and I suspect others do as well. So the question: does anybody else think Zaph is getting a little "drama queen" on us with this project?

Ok, the secret's out, I'm building "X" shaped enclosures for home theater. I'll have a left, right and center. The design is currently shown in my blog.
Or... I fell asleep before I managed to fill in the text placeholders. I did manage to get the useful measurements moved over to the tidbits section though. Even some of that is temporary until I get a few items moved to the test groups. The 2" Peerless, the A Brown Soun stuff, etc.
Since this thread is pretty much off topic (or more like no topic) maybe someone can tell me why FTP upload never works over free wireless networks. It makes updating my page a real pain when I'm not at home. I probably shouldn't do that anyway, since FTP is unencrypted. I typically end up emailing something to my wife and talking her through it. I need some blog software or something.
Don't get too excited about this teaser project, some of you will probably be disappointed. Also, don't get too attached to my blog, with my upcoming schedule, updates are going to be a little sparse.- Bottom

I was wondering from the blog post if the project was somehow pornographic (team effort anyone?) and got censored by the wife to XXX? :E
Seriously though, John we really appreciate everything you contribute and hope you continue to do so.

FTP over free wireless? It may be that some kind of auto-filter has blocked access from IP's available on said free network due to an overabundance of people trying hacks from said IP's, or other limits on what they allow (just like you probably can't send mail out via SMTP using any server but your ISP's...)
I agree, quite frustrating. I can't FTP to my own site at all any more, and no idea why that would be the case yet.

You should take a look at wordpress or similar. I use wordpress and love it. It is an easy install and would allow you to not only change the text of your blog from anywhere, but you can also use the uploading tool for images. I don't know if it would work through the restrictions that you have been bumping into (it is probably FTP based as well), but its worth a shot. Its pretty cool software, easy to incorporate into your website. Then all of us devoted followers could use your RSS feed!

i'd say the port you usually use for ftp has been blocked for security purposes (thoses ports are 20 and 21), you could try to speak to your admin @ work to see what he can do.
Or you could use one of the free customizable PHP packages around allowing someone to do a blog with links and pics with an http interface
a very good one, popular in france is dotclear : DOTCLEAR
looking forward to the update- Bottom

Zaph, have you considered using sftp to get into your server? It is based on the SSH protocol used to replace telnet. It is a rather secure way of getting into your server.
I manage servers for a living so if you have any questions that you think I might be helpful in answering, don't hesistate to drop me a PM.- Bottom

Are you specifying passive FTP? The wireless network probably uses NAT which mucks up active FTP sessions. Switching to passive mode usually helps, unless your server is also behind a NAT'd firewall, in which case forget about it.
Better option, as stated, is to use SSH and SFTP. Secure and more efficient.Santino

I commend your priorities but, selfishly, I will miss your blogs and fastidious speaker designs. And remember...

Thanks all for the kind words. Yup, I'm going to have my hands full.
A couple years from now, Seas hexagrids won't look so ugly... And I better stock up on those little Aura NT1 tweeters that dent when you breath on them wrong.
Also, looking into some of the tips about ftp over wireless. Yeah, I suspect FTP is somehow disabled on most free networks. There's probably a mindset that only hackers and pirates use FTP.- Bottom

I would recommend never using a non-secure protocol over any wireless, let alone free wireless. So, sFTP is the way to go.
It's not that hackers and pirates use FTP, it's that hackers and pirates like to sniff free wireless for people that use these unsecured protocols to get passwords and new platforms to hack/compromise and use to their own ends.

Well, congratulations!
Let me tell you from experience (one 3 1/2 year old, one 1 1/2 year old), speaker projects will experience HUGE milestone slippage and your wife probably won't look kindly on your wanting to finish projects before the big day while she is in nest building frenzy.
On the bright side, I can report that my hand polished PU cabinets with 21W8555 woofers in very convenient toddler heigt and Manger MSWs shining as a prize for more enterprising kids have so far survided our own and visiting kids with no harm. I did purchase metal grilles but there was not need to put them on yet.- Bottom

Congrats John!!
My stereo pair (twin girls) are now 16 years old. The younger they are, the more they keep you busy and the older they get the more headaches they give you. But the feeling that you get from being a "dad" is priceless.
I wish you and your wife health and hapiness with the "big project".
Darn it, I was kinda of hoping for some sweet Zaph designed line arrays.- Bottom

Congratus John
You may actually find yourself with time on your hands .
My wife falls asleep early , nursing the little one to bed .
So , I'm up till midnite ...playing the digital piano ( w/headphones )
or reading / surfing for audio projects .
Oh , and a Thanks to you for a father/son project .
I recently handed my 19yr old son , a pair of HiVi3s with an 8in subwoofer
for his PC , nicely driven by that $15 Accurian radioshack amp .
A wide grin on that boys face !- Bottom
