Will this flange affect the frequency response?

What do you guys think about the flange on this 5" Hi-Vi driver? Do you think it will affect the FR in any way, with a flush mount?

    Thanks :T

That is a funky looking frame. I don't know if flush mount is quite the right term. Inset is more accurate. I don't think it would be any worse than surface mounting a regular driver. Give it a try. If you have problems with diffraction use felt around the tweeter.

I think it's more important to flushmount the tweeter (shorter wavelength more sensitive for these small offsets). The woofer should be fine (flush mounted or not), maybe you can fill the circle between surround and basket with some velt. That's what other companies do with this type of basket, filling it with foam.

Not sure how deep it is, but you could cut a filler ring from 1/8" masonite or something similar...or fill it with a flexible material like felt strip from McMaster.

That is exactly what I was thinking, too.

              The answer is "yes"

              The question remains, "how much"

I think felt IS the answer here.

hi-vi might have purposely made the flange like that to flatten the response, so i would measure it first before using felt or trimming it off.

I would guess they made the flange like that so it could be stiff enough while still a thin stamped steel frame. An OEM likely mounts a fancy plastic flange over this.

                    same thing, "How much?"

I don't think he'll need felt unless he pushes it really high, which I kinda doubt will happen being an aluminum driver and all...

I think it will be fine if you just flush mount it.

Off topic: Does anyone else laugh when they hear "Flange"? I know John Krutke has made a joke about this on his blog in the past...

If this flange is flush mounted it will allow a plastic bezel to completely mask the driver mounting the way only the rubber surround and the cone is visible. This will also make a smooth transition from the surround area to the baffle. Check out e.g. the Infinity Primus line.

I see what you guys are saying. I'm not so sure I want to get this involved in a speaker using an inexpensive mid:

I'd probably only push it up to 2.5 khz if I was going to use it, so I doubt (better yet, I hope) the wierd flange wouldn't affect it too much.

                        Thanks :T
