How rare is this crossover topology?

I know very little about the subject, but in my travels around the web looking at designs, I have never seen one like this one.
What will this do that the normal "building block" parallel types do not?

Has anyone read the latest audioXpress issue? Page 42.
describes an unusual XO design. It's been around for
a while. It's been patented. it's been referenced in AES
      papers.

Steve Stokes is the Author of the article.

      It has some appeal

The only way you will know is to build one and listen, if you can get it right ;-)

1st order are easier for a beginner, but have to have suitable drivers.

Pretty sure it's a funky way of introducing a cauer-elliptic filter...
