Very nice article. I'm going to have to re-read it later to better understand some of the concepts.

Though, the by-line just further confused me. I was already confused by JonMarsh v. EvilTwin. It sure did sould like it was our JonMarsh. I guess I haven't hung out here and there long enough.

Thanks for the link. What a fun article to read- it provides the whole thought process from beginning to end. Jon writes quite well and made it fun to follow along. (I've been reviewing too many poorly written papers lately!)

When was the article written? There was some mention of PIII PC's, so a few years back, I guess. Is it correct to think that the Modula MT design is now a better 2 way than in the article?

2002. and Yes, though the M8a goes lower in the bottom end and will play louder.

The Unorthodox 8" can be upgraded just by dropping in RS28's; mounting plate and impedance and FR are compatible, and the MkIV's I have are so equipped. I still have the pair of MkII's with Eton woofers and Accuton tweeters. MkIII's with Focals were sold.

"Successor" to this design is the M8ta, basically a tower (cabinet size and LF extension) and driver optimized version.

If I could find an 8 that goes higher and cleaner, I'd update this with something more like the Modula MT design, but just haven't come accross any such critter- not even the Seas W22 makes that possible. (note attached near field SPL for W22, showing anti-phase suckout at 1700-1800 Hz due to cone flex).

Thanks for the kind words regarding writing... I've been getting a lot of practice at work lately (20+ papers in the last five years), and I sometimes cringe when doing peer review for IEEE. Not that I don't have a lot of room for improvement!

A new article is in preparation for the current project.

Excellent. I may have to subscribe to that magazine. Looks interesting.

You’ve got me beat on papers. I’m at around a mere 15 for the last 5 years. The bio stuff takes longer. But I think the science writing has made my regular writing more boring. Being clear and scientific takes away some of the flare and panache. Tough to get both together. I've also be reviewing a lot of papers and grants over the years. Nice writing makes everything so much more enjoyable.

thanks for the kind words. The idea was to hopefully make an article that gave enough methodology that even when the drivers or design were not current, there would be some useful information or insight still available.

The same design can be done with just a little change, for example, using the RS225 and RS28a, as is used in variants of the big bother of this project, the M8ta.

                    Greetings from Seattle (today)!

                              Hi Guys,

This morning I went directly to the online location, and opened and checked the file- opens fine, scrolled through the whole thing OK.

Then, as an additional check, I loaded up a brower and downloaded it to the desktop using the link above, and it loaded up fine.

Last, I did a file comparison between the original file on my M8a disk folder, and the downloaded file via the browser this morning, and they're identical.

SO, please just try again, right click on the link and save to your desktop or download folder.

BTW, this is no PC or Mac thing; the PDF was created with Acrobat 7 from Ventura Publisher on a PC.

                              Regards,

Clicking on the link with IE 6 or FireFox gets the error message.

Using 'Save target as' in IE results in the file being downloaded.

Clicking on the link with Safari results in the file being opened in a browser window.

Clicking on the link with Chrome results in long download and a blank page. Doing a "Save link as" gets the file downloaded.

So use what works for you....

Also try right clicking that file, Properties, copy the website URL of the location, paste it into the address bar of a new browser and sometimes this will cure the problem...of course your mileage may vary
                                    This works for pictures especially.

Hi Jon and Thomas - thanks again, I read through this a few years ago and wanted to re-read.

However, link seems to be down (even trying "save target as") and I'm getting an error message requested site unavailable or cannot be found - is this at the host end or should I try something different?

                                        Thanks

I get an error message when I try to download the file. It says I'm forbidden because of a control access list.

That's because homepage services on MAC.COM have expired- gone away, as is Mobile Me fairly soon. I'm going to have to setup alternative hosting. Let me check and see if I can do something safe with my Dropbox account. I'll get back to you.

ThomasW, I clicked on your IB link...

Question: If I was to make a IB woofer setup and mount it in the crawlspace of my house would the back wave travel throughout the house? I was planning on using my garage for a HT and wanted to soundproof it to stop the sound from traveling throughout the house.

ellisr63: It has been my experience that there is no way to isolate your home from the fury that is an IB subwoofer unless they are in separate buildings. :B

Anything physically connected to your IB sub will transmit vibration. My IB sub is in the basement and it shakes the entire structure of the 2-floor house. You might want to post your question over at The Cult of the Infinitely Baffled to get impressions from others. You'll need to create an account before you can post, but that is easy.
