Workability of Mineral Wool vs. Fiberglass

OK, so OC703 looks somewhat better than equal thickness mineral wool, but mineral wool is mucho cheaper. Ignoring performance issues (since I can look up absorption values online), how is working with rock wool compared to fiberglass? Is it as stiff? Messy or messier? Health hazards? Stuff like that, comments especially appreciated from anyone with experience!

Well, the guys that sell the stuff affectionately call it "rotten glass". Actually that's a pretty good description, as it looks like really old fiberglass batting. It doesn't seem to be itchy like fiberglass but I'm not sure about any other risks.

When you say "working with," what are you trying to do with it?

Handling, cutting (with whatever the appropriate tool is), use of adhesives to glue it to a backer board, rigidity.

Yep, based on your description, I agree with Thomas. 703 is very easy to work with, it holds together well and cuts easily without a lot of fugitive particles.

An inorganic fibrous substance that is produced by steam blasting and cooling siliceous materials as rock, slag, glass, or combinations of these. It's used as an insulator and a filtering material. Also called rock wool.

                      Interesting, thanks Thomas.

I guess it must already be molten when they steam blast it.

I am a newbie starting to plan my home theater and am looking to DIY a good part of it. Fortunately, I have good construction help. I do want to get a good plan together before I go build so I will take my time on research. I consistently am finding mineral wool referenced...

I thought I remembered reading on here awhile back someone posting about building an enclosure out of fiberglass, but I can't find it now. Anyway, I'm wondering how fiberglass would work as a material for building a speaker enclosure. Does it have suitable accoustic properties, or does it resonate,...

                        Fiberglass Resin?
                        by Lindahl
I remember reading somewhere that fiberglass resin was better than caulking because it does a good job seeping into the cracks. This stuff (fiberglass resin) is not very viscous at all. If you were to use it on two sides before it sets, one side would not be covered very well, since the resin would...
