It looks like a rectangular plate that's being driven at the center by an actuator of some sort (like the voice coil of a speaker). They're sweeping the frequency upwards. At certain frequencies, axial and/or tangential standing wave modes of the plate occur and the sand collects in the nodes of the standing waves. The odd patterns are formed by different combinations of different axial and different tangential modes.
