    MB Quart on Madisound

Any comments on MB Quart drivers on: http://www.madisound.com/cgi-bin/ind...keywords=quart ? I know that they seemed to have gotten out of DIY distribution a while ago. Anybody know if there coming back, or is this some sort of overstock, or surplus clearance thing.

The double magnet 1" tweeter was originally a custom piece for Avalon Acoustics. It was so good MB put it in production.

The 2" dome was used by Avalon Acoustics for it's $15,000 3-ways...

Geez, wow! At $26, it would be a shame if someone didn't buy a pair for Zaph to test. Even though it's limited stock, it would be very interesting to see how they stack up to the domes available today. $15,000 is a lot of speaker.

Jon and I used them in numerous designs years ago. I imagine the Clio files are on a hard drive somewhere. We bought them direct from Avalon when Charlie Hansen (who now owns Arye) was the chief engineer/designer at Avalon.

Link to a description of those $15K 3-ways

If I remember correctly, the old MB metal tweeters were very similar to LPG 26T with higher FS and less power but almost identical sounding.

                    Avalon veresion of MB tweeter

                    SPL

                    SPL + HD2

                    SPL + HD3

Much more accurate VC positioning than the LPG26 (which I also have), and lower distortion, both 2nd and 3rd.

These measurements were not done with the tweeter mounted flush; with that and some judicious felt surrounding the tweeter, flatter on axis response can be achieved betwen 3 and 20 kHz.

Best if crossed over around 2 kHz, IMO. Unfortunately, Avalon was using it down to 1 kHz in the Eclipse; at low and moderate SPL, it sounded pretty nice, but push it and it would "bite". Better in the Ascent 3 way (crossed over around 3.5 kHz).

The M51 midrange dome is not nearly as flat as the new RS midrange, but it's quite usable in a sensible range- 800 Hz to 3.2 kHz. Of course, that's where I'd use the RS, also, due to tweeter integration/wavelength issues.

Is that the tweeter used in the old Avatar? If so, it's the only MBQ tweet of its era (or perhaps ever, as I've not heard any of their newer stuff) that doesn't literally give me a headache. At least with Avalon's beautiful grille on...

It was used on the Eclipse and Ascent, I don't know what was used in the Avatar.
