question re. sloped baffle/time aligned drivers

a quickie: if we consider a sloped baffle design (soup and others) then isn't it necessary to mount the drivers to fire horizontally rather than slightly upwards (over the head of the listener) as is usually the case?

Typically the slope is about 10 degrees. Most drivers have a very flat response 10 degrees off axis, often flatter than the on degrees response. Also, having the drivers face directly forward means a stepped baffle with it's associated diffraction problems. Most manufacturers go for the sloped approach.

If working with drivers that don't have good off axis response, (like the XT25 tweeter) you can always build delay into the crossover with a lattice network. Then you can keep them on a flat baffle pointing right at the listener, and avoid a stepped or slanted baffle. Usually it's only an issue with 2nd order crossovers.
