    Rear mounting

Are there any downsides to mounting drivers on the rear of the mdf of the front baffle? I am wondering because for my little speaker I want to make a clothe grille, but I don't want to build a cover, since the drivers aren't that pretty and I feel no reason to have a removable cover.

yes there are lots of down sides. All sorts of diffraction effects. You'll get the same sort of effects with a grill mounted directly on the baffle, but they will be at different frequencies.

Pretty drivers or not, your speakers will (usually) sound better without a grill. I've had pretty good success mounting grills with 2" of hardwood dowel mounting feet (the frame looks like a short table). This keeps the cloth well away from the drivers and has a minimal impact on the sound.

So the clothe has an effect on the sound? Interesting. I'll just do them uncovered.
