damn man, i checked their site this morning, and it said it was undergoing updates... i wonder if those 4 ohm versions are shielded, cuz it doesnt look like it.

apparently they aren't shielded and are aimed at the car audio crowd (hence 4R).

Curious. I wonder if they're really "optimized" just for car stuff, or if they may be useful in some home applications.

For example, for me, sheilded is a non issues, and I like the fact they are a little lighter and may have a little less masking of the rear area.

Now, depending on one's goals, two of the 4 ohm could be wired together in an MTM for those times you don't want 4 ohm load impedance or less on the amp.

Or, a single 4 ohm might be used when one wants to optimize the sensitivity vs voltage of a Modula MT.

Or, one might try that for upping the sensitivity of the M8ta, since the main tweeters I'd use are already 4 ohms.

Something to think about- have to run some numbers on the T/S. I'm a little surprised to see Qts of 0.49 for the RS225-4; might be a bit on the high side for an M8ta. Higher Fs is also an issue. Lower Le is expected. 6mm vs 7mm Xmax isn't a plus. Much stiffer suspension, of course.

Well, something to scratch head and think about. The car folks should like these...

why is the xmax lower? and the fs on the 8" is higher than the fs on the 7" now. why?

Xmax is probably lower because the voice coil is slightly shorter. Looking at VAS, it's much lower on the RS225-4 than the RS225-8, which translates to higher Fs, due to reduced suspension compliance. Probably a "safety" thing to reduce the likelihood of over excursion if installed in a door or "lossy" enclosure without good control of the backwave.

Well from what I know from reading car audio websites is that these drivers were made by many requests by the car audio crowd. We have been using the shields RS180s and knocking off the shielding to decrease mounting depth. Many in the car audio crowd wanted to see a 4-ohm non-shielded version of the RS180 and we have what we requested. Thanks PE.

Has anybody tested any of these new 4 ohm Dayton reference drivers? Specifically the RS180-4. The datasheet is not on daytonaudio's website or parts express. I want to design a MTM with these drivers, please help! Thanks

The shipment I ordered didn't get here, still haven't tracked it down. They're designed more for car stuff, as regards T/S parameters.

I would love to see two of these in an 8 ohm MTM design.. hint hint.

ahhh i c the .pdf and response graphs for all the Dayton 4 Ohm RS drivers are now available on the PartsExpress site.. ahh goodies! The RS180-4 response looks better than I had hoped. http://www.partsexpress.com/pdf/295-374g.pdf
