If you are playing the dvd off your computer the first thing I would say is that it's the internal noise of the computer itself. This is especially bad with onboard sound cards. It can be so bad that you will get sounds even when using the scroll feature on your mouse!
But as jdybnis said, we really need to know the components you are using.
EDIT: oops I was too late! what sound card are you running?- Bottom

getting a good sound card will greatly help your situation, and eliminate almost all computer induced noise. As for headphone amps I can't really recommend any as mine run decently off of phantom power (if thats the proper definition ) from the front bay on my system- Bottom

Integrated audio on Intel boards is notorious for being absolutely completely uselessly noisy.
Aftermarket chipsets are quite often better, if not very good (but I have yet to find one that's up to doing speaker measurements... S/N is still only mid 80's on any I've tested)
For quality sound, look to an M-Audio board. Rev 5.1 is a good deal at ~$75.

I have it connected in digital out on my rotel and sound better than my denon 3910.

after reading the linkwitz site some more, I see that the headphones have a peak in response at 5.2k and perhaps above. I download an EQ online. not sure if it works as well as an convential active or passive type. but I think the sound has improved. this peak was likely the piercing I heard. but not the hiss in the voices.http://joy2meu.com/- Bottom
