    Modeling full range drivers

Am I missing something here, or are programs like unibox and winISD only for subwoofers? How come winISD only goes up to 1000hz? What if I want to model a foxtex or lowether "wideband" driver? Is it because the box only effects the tuning of low frequencies, or am I using the wrong program for this application?

    You got it right there.

IIRC it really only plays a role 200Hz and down (with the exception of port noise/resonance issues).

And, you really should be using Unibox or something - WinISD has limitations IIRC.

OK, so if I model a fostex driver and get the box how I want it and a tuning frequency, will things like baffle width come into play etc?

Baffle width does different things. If you have Excel, you can use Unibox. You can also become 100% baffled (pun not intended, but certainly enjoyed on this end) by baffle interaction - both baffle step issues, and baffle diffraction, by checking out the Baffle Diffraction Simulator.

        It gets way fun.

Yes definitely, and there are simulators for this. There's one available free at the link here: http://www.pvconsultants.com/audio/d...ownloadbds.htm

There's another free simulator called 'the Edge' or something like that - I prefer the one in the link for ease of use, tendency not to crash, etc - ymmv.

Another factor in modeling full range drivers is the behavior at higher frequencies- if the driver tries to radiate pistonically, the dispersion would narrow dramatically. Most try to decouple the center part of the cone from the rest above some frequency range.

You could model most of these effects in LSPCAD, including the LF behavior, baffle step, and dispersion as a function of frequency and cone diameter.

Or do what so many other people do - stick it in a box, convince yourself that it's the best speaker you've ever heard, and live happily ever after
