    Question about baffle step

I am a little embarrased to ask but I have never seen a CLEAR explaination so here goes...when baffle step starts to become a factor to the point it reaches it's full theoretical 6dbs of reinforcement, is this change linear? is this a smooth 6db per octave increase in response? or are there sudden changes in response at either end of baffle step gain/loss? Believe me if I had discovered the answer in the dozen or so articles I read on the subject I wouldn't be asking such a basic question ops:

There are actually two issues that come up with a baffle. Baffle step is but one of them.

      The other is diffraction.

The solutions are generally different, though both tend to impact the crossover.

They're both also discussed some in the linked writeup.
