    Heat Sink Lapping and Installation

Well my PC Saga continues.... In the quest to overclock my PC, I have purchased a Thermalright SLK-900A Heat sink, Panaflo 92mm fan and Artic Silver Ceramique.

During my research, I learned about lapping a heatsink. Is it true that lapping can further ruduce cpu temps? I don't know but what can it hurt.

Here are some of the materials I used in lapping the HS.

An "X" is marked across the area to be sanded.

Using piece of glass I started with 320 grit "WetDry" sandpaper. I added water and smeared dish detergant on the HS base. Only the area that will be sanded!.

Unfortunaly the glass broke and had use a smooth piece of wood to complete the project.

1 Stroke = Moving the HS from left to right and back left. Stoke the HS 10 times and then rotate 90 degrees. Add a few drops of water and a drop soap between each rotation. Repeat until the HS is back in its original position. I repeated entire process for 320/400/600/800/1000/1500 grit sand paper. Wipe and clean the HS between each sanding.

Post 320 - you can see the HS was slightly concaved.

Post 400 - now I got scared I screwed up. The reflection is worse than when it origanly started.

    Post 600 - Little better

    Post 800

    Post 1000 - Feeling good

    Post 1500 - VERY happy

The CPU was cleaned first with Goo Gone and then Alchohol.

Scotch tape is then placed around the CPU

Put about a small amount of Artic Silver Ceramique on the cpu and spread with a razor blade.

Add a small amount of ceramique to HS and wipe off. I may have left to much on though .

Place the HS ontop of CPU and using a small screwdriver I clasped the HS down.

    Results:

Prior to the new HSF my temps, using MBM, Idle: 42-25c; Normal Load:54-57c

New temps, Idle: 32c; Normal 42c.

I will be doing some additional test and then start OC. :T

    Hey Eduardo...nice job

    Couple of things though...

Was your temp comparsion an apples to apples type thing? In other words

What was the before with the Thermalright SLK-900A and artic silver before lapping and what was it after.

Just would have been nice to know how much of a difference lapping makes.

You could have even gone a step further by using mothers mag polish (equivalent to about 3000 grit). It would have been a shiny mirror when you were done. 8)

Still looks like a good job....what's the clock on your CPU?

      Thanks Gordon.

No apples to apples. It was a clean install and no before hand temps.

Oh never mind I can see it pretty clearly on your close-up of the processor.

I thought about it but this is also a budget project. Going for the highest returns with the lowest cost.

right now I'm running my system at 200 FSB and 11x multiplier = 2.197 ghtz. Prime 95 runs clean and not any louder than the 60mm HSF. :T. running temps in normal operation is about 38c. And it hasn't hit 50c even during burn test. Next step is drop the multiplier and kick up the FSB. I'm still trying to understand memory settings.
