I have a g5 Powermac which has an SPDIF output. My goal is to build two very accurate nearfield monitors for use with a sub for various audio uses.
I could use the line level audio outputs on the Mac, but I question how good the D/A and preamp is on the soundcard. The G5 uses a PCI Express cards.
If I use the Digital output, I would need to accomplish these things:
1) Quality D/A conversion
2) Desktop volume control
3) Amplification for the monitors
4) If possible, i would like to biamp the speakers, so crossover capability is also needed to provide sub/mid/high.
I have considered various combinations including the Behringer DEQ2496, DCX 2496, and Panasonic SA-XR70. But can't seem to find exactly the right combination. However, I am not very familiar with some of the PC and Proaudio products like those from M-Audio, etc.
What equipment options would you use to solve this problem. My frame of reference is the Dynaudio BM5 studio monitor and a sub I would build myself, so the cost is about $1000 to $1500 for the entire project.
What would you do?
Thanks for any recommendations.
