I have been shopping the Sony KDF-E42A10 and the Samsung HL-S4266W. I know that they are different techs, does anyone have an opinion or experience with either? Advice GREATLY appreciated!!

The only real big thing (coming from a Samsung 56" 1080p DLP guy) is the 42" is only 720P native. The other big thing is that it only has a 2500:1 contrast ratio. And while that's not bad, you can easily tell the difference in black depth on that versus the newer 1080p (10,000:1) sets.
The other thing you might notice with the DLP is the "rainbow effect" that can be seen with a really dark spot on the TV next to a really light object. Like a street light in a dimly lit alley.
Even with these downsides, I still think that the Samsung DLP gives you the best looking HD experience right out of the box (and even better when calibrated).
One thing I have noticed with the Sony KDF is that if you watch a lot of hockey (which I do) you will notice that fast paced action still doesn't seem to keep up and slightly 'blurs' on the screen from the refresh rate. Now it's minimal and I'm sure there are people out there that can't tell...but I'm more a video and audiophile type person and tend to nit-pick and notice a lot more than most.
Either one though, I think you're going to really enjoy!Digital Audio makes me Happy.

an lcd will have noticeable screendoor- which most notice
rainbows are no longer a tangible issue on dlps
dlps are said to have better colors but you will find people always have a preference to one tech over the other in this rerspect- the only way you will know is by looking at them- i prefer the look of lcd
some of the older 720p dlps had issues with 1080i signal and would chop it to 540p
(ie closer to SD than HD)
contrary to popular belief both techs have motion issues and have similar refresh rates
lcos (think jvc or sony sxrd) is a refinement of lcd and resolves screen door and refresh rate problems
i think the offer superior picture to dlp but again ever ones eyes are different
i would suggest 1080p due to processing problems of the 720ps not to mention 1080p is the true hd
dlp as far as i know still cant do 1080p but utilizes wobulation- someone correct me if this has finally changed
id say look at sony xbr2 sxrd, jvc's 1080p lcos, and samsung and mitsubishi dlps under varying sources. a store like best buy has a loop that plays hd content of varying quality so it should give you a good representation of real life performance since a lot of the high def content is suspect causing a great reliance on the sets processing
now for your particular case i am very familiar with both tvs
seems you are in the 1k price range
the sony is a one year old model and I believe the samsung is too
again i prefered the sony but many liked the samsung
last years samsung had a much dimmer screen relative to that sony (current models are noticably brighter and uniformly so- no hotspots)
both were shown to handle 1080i improperly
the samsung had very problematic bulbs that dimed quickly and poped frequently
my advice is to pass on both and save up for the KDS-50A2000- Bottom

I've owned both.
I had a 60" LCD GW 720p unit that I thought was great and superior to its 720 DLP Counterpart.
I now own a 1080P Samsung DLP which I think is superior to the SXRD, The SXRD looked like a better version of my LCD Sony, accurate but very digital in appearance. My Samsung looks real, life like. I have not seen a properly setup 1080p RP LCD.
I've had zero problems with either and before you buy anything you should go see one properly setup.
The guy at CC did a big no no for us and hooked up the Samsung HD DVR to the Sony SXRD so we could see them back to back. The Sony was properly tuned also and we personally preferred the Samsung.
I've never noticed any rainbow problems but I believe my unit has the new 14,000rpm color wheel.- Bottom
