    Tv for the father inlaw

My father inlaw has been having to pound the top of his 32" sony console TV to get it to come back after it goes dark. He has finaly given me the go ahead to do some research for a new TV.

Unfortunatly I am not 100% sure of the budget but I would guess not more than $3000.00. Since he is used to 32", I don't want anything smaller, bigger is fine. He wants something to mount on a wall.

I need best value, he wont be running a HT, he wont even be running HD until he has too more than likely. He is using cable as his source and doesnt own a DVD player (yet).

So, I am all ears bugs. I know very little about these technowledgies because when I bought my CRT the flat displays werent much of a consideration so I did little or no research.

With that budget and the state of current pricing and technology, there's no point in buying an SDTV, so you may as well get him an HD set.... even if he won't fully use it.

Foxman, have a look at Larry's post as well but otherwise it sounds like you've already narrowed it down to plasma/LCD if he wants to hang it on the wall. For plasma I recommend the Panasonic TH-37PHD8UK. For LCD look at the 32"-40" sets from Sony's Bravia lineup or Sharp's Aquos line.

Otherwise there's plenty of options available in RPTV's if he can get past not hanging them on a wall thing. They offer generally better PQ and higher resolution for less money than direct view sets, you just can't hang them. They range in size from around 40"-70". My order of preference for RPTV's is CRT(Hitachi/Mitsubishi), SXRD (Sony), DLP (Samsung) and LCD (Sony)

Oh, and if there's a couple hundred buck left, buy him a decent DVD player
