Does anyone know what software development tool is used to code the firmware for the RSP1066 etc. Wouldn't it be great if we could code our own fixes, improvements etc., especially when us die hards keep the unit for many years and Rotel have moved on to their latest and greatest and we would like to keep the tweaks coming.

8O Trust me, you dont even want to try.
It is most likely written in assember for whatever microprocessor is used in the 1066, but there is an off-chance that they could be using embedded C. Regardless, not an easy undertaking at all. Its nothing like programming a PC.
Writting real-time code for embeded processors is very tricky. It requires an intimate understanding of all of the underling components in the system and how they behave. You have to be very mindful of all kinds of timing situations, register settings and memory use.
