  • Which ~$10k speaker would you choose?

In the footsteps of Joey's thread about $5k speakers, I am posting a "hypothetical" poll of which speakers AROUND $10k you would choose. I really like them all for one reason or another. They are all different sounding, and I would love to have them all but thats not reasonable.

These are speakers that I have access too and would consider once I have a home with a dedicated 2-channel room. Feel free to add your own in your posts, but I am trying base it on the ones listed in the poll. Thank you.

Used Maggie 20.1 would be a nice thing to have.....for $10K

For $50K, I'll take the Avalon Isis over any other speaker on the planet (and yes I'm very serious)

Absolutely! Isis is unreal... I do enjoy the Wilson MaxxII at $44500 (what a deal)

Probably something from PMC, like the AML. I've heard one of the smaller models (TB2 I think) and was just blown away. Everything I've read or heard makes the AML to just like magic. Hard to believe that these things come with Brystons built in.

                ensen.

I compared JMLabs 1027 Be to Martin Logan, B&W, Gallo Ref 3 and Theil speakers. The JMs are in a class by themselves at $7500.

With the dealer discount, you should get these babies for $10K (brand new)

I should have limited the poll to the speakers I listed as they are the ones I have access too at a discount.

I think my only option is to try them all! I can bring them home and compare away.

Hehe....me too! But I am saving as we speak. First on the list is a house to put whatever I get into.

But I think I have narrowed it down to the Sophia and the Summit. I really like them both so much, it will be hard to decide. So as I have time, I will listen and listen and listen. Unfortunately we do not have Summits on demo right now. I will try and talk the owner into getting a set. We have Vantages and Sophias. I might try them head to head just to get an idea of what to expect.

A lot of it depends on how well the Summit can do with some of the music I listen to alot. Heavy stuff like Metallica, Godsmack, Tool, etc.....some of the older models didnt do it for me on some of the heavier stuff. The Wilsons on the other hand

The Summits are garnering more followers.

Though the Sophia and BW802D are cool choices too... this is hard.

                                            Audiophiliac,

I'm going to try to help you out. I'm going to audition the Wilson Sophias tomorrow (as mentioned on the MLO forum) and I'll try to objectify what I hear.... I'll do a comparo between the Summits and the Wilsons.

This might be an unfair match though as I dont have the goods to keep up with what Glenn Poor will be running through those Wilsons. I'll do my best though.

                                            Stay tuned!

If I was buying instead of building, I'd go with the Linkwitz Orion assembled configuration. They're ugly, but they should be mandatory listening for anyone that things they want to produce high end speakers for a living- including most of the established "majors". Even people like Audio Critic and Sensible Sound who don't generally go ga-ga over "expensive" speakers acknowledge that the Orions are pretty much in a performance class by themselves in the under $10K - $20K category.

Between the Summits and the Sophias, I would take the later. But not because it sounds better but because I have heard them and I haven't heard the Summits... yet - the dealer promises to have them set up in about two more weeks. Compared to the B&W's the Wilsons are surprisingly quite good. I liked the Sophias and the WATT/Puppy's but I found the discontinued Grand SLAMM far too aggressive. The only turnoffs to me are the automotive finishes, I prefer real veneer esthetics, and that they are WAY overpriced, IMO.

Of those listed, I'd take the ML Summit's. Very nice.

If I could have any speaker at "around" $10k, it would be the Magnepan MG-20.1's. Incredible

And if I had an unlimited budget, I'd get a pair (so to speak) of Wisdom Audio Adrenaline Rush speakers. WOW!!!
