Double curved Statement II and Statement II Centre

With all the buzz around the Statements, I have to get myself a pair! The main complaint around the statements seems to be WAF, so my mission is to tackle that downside. I am planning to solve this, by adding curves to the statement. While this has been done before, I don't know of any build using my methods (3D CAD, 2D CAD, CNC). I have spent the last year gathering information, and finishing the design. Now the time has come for dust to fly freely!.

    The tools I am using:
    Design calculations: Libre Office
    3D CAD: Blender
    2D CAD: LibreCad

I am posting some CAD screenshots to kick off the post:

      Iteration #3 WTMTW statement II

And this is iteration number III

at this point I decided I wanted to go with the statements, curved side and curved dome. I really like the ribbon tweeter for some reason...

        Iteration IV - Truncated statements

At this point, I decided that I wanted to go for truncated statements to reduce the height, and increase the WAF. According to Deewan, his truncated statements worked out great:
Some of the pictures no longer display because Photobucket discontinued their free picture hosting service. SORRY! Hey guys. It's been a while since I've been an active poster to the boards because I haven't been building many speakers in the past few years. That drought has come to an end. The past three builds I have done

Deewan is a fantastic finisher, unlike myself.
The best compliment I have had however, is someone who asked where I had my subwoofer done with leather... It is hand painted

You might have gathered that I am an engineer. I will not build the speakers, without a decent plan, drawings and the calculations to back it up!

                This is looking really cool.
Not sure if you just want to share where you are in the process, or if you want more input and ideas as well.
Throwing in some more input as well - but that does not mean that I think you need it. Your current design is looking really cool!

In additon to what you already have done, you could break up the look even more by doing something like what Sonus faber have done here:

An option I do not see in your first iteration design choice is having the top bowing the other way around, inspired by this design:

                  Liner

The design phase is over, and the parts have been cut. I will post some pictures of the process soon. In the mean time, I am thinking about the lining and the stuffing. This is what I am planning to use as liner for mid and woofer chambers:

Do you think this would work?

And planning to use stuffing for woofer (inter connection), mid chambers (as directed by Jim roughly 1/2 of mid chamber). Jim indicated that stuffing for the woofers is optional, how much should I use in the woofer section?

                    Hi Salty,

Make sure you can blow through the mattress foam which would indicate it's open cell foam and can be used for acoustic purposes. Closed cell foam will not work in speakers. The woofer and mid compartments should both be lined with foam everywhere you can see when looking through the driver cut out hole. I also included a 2-3 handfuls of fiber fill in the back 1/2 of the mid compartment. You can do the same in the woofer compartments too if you wish. Just be sure the fiber fill doesn't crowd or get into the back of the driver. It' needs to "breathe" freely.

                    HTH

                    Jim

Thanks! I used the same material for my subwoofer. I tried on the left-over material, and I could blow trough it without a problem.

This looks like an awesome project!

                            2 things:

Do the screws for the woofers have something to bite into on the outer ends?
Did you round over the back of the baffle for the woofers and mids?

The inside is now painted with left over paint from other projects. Maybe overkill, but I like to paint the inside of all my speakers.
I am using titebond III for the curved sides, mainly because the longer opening times (titebond extend is hard to obtain here). Titebond is having a good customer in me, as I am using 6 oz per panel. Yes, I decided to go for the gallon! :T
I am using bags of sand to press the curved sides on. From here on the operation is a little like Intels tick and toc. One day I use my clamps for pre-bending a plywood side, the next day the clamps are in use for the gluing. With 5-6 panels per side this is an arduous process... I will be putting the 3rd panel in tonight.

I don't log on to this site much anymore since I am not currently building anything but thought I'd check in to see if there were any cool builds. I saw this thread title and figured I'd check it out. All of a sudden I realized some of the cabinet designs shown at the beginning looked a lot like what I built and I was prepared to offer some advice from my experience. Then I saw the CAD drawings and CNC machine. That's cheating!!! If you aren't hand drawing blueprints and hand cutting mdf, it's just not fair.

But seriously, great looking build so far. Keep up the great work and I will be checking in more often to see the progress of these beauties!!!!

@Deewan, I don't think using a CNC is cheating. When taking into account all the time I spent making the drawings, and getting to know the CNC machine, I would have been much quicker doing everything by hand. However, cranking out the next set will be easy ;-)

I still would like some of your advice. I need to trim off all the edges. Since the sides are curved, I am not sure how to do this with a router. Any advice on how to best do this? Thanks!!

                                          Very nice build!
To trim your sides I think you might have to build some kind of jig for your router so that it follows the edge.
But I guess some others here will give some more tested advice...

What do you plan for finish and preparation?

I'd like to know as well. I'd love to build some curved versions and have it CNC cut. I just don't have the skill to do the CAD or know someone local with a CNC. It would be too pricey to have someone mock things up and perform the cuts. So, I may not get the chance, DIY all the way.

                                                            Almost ready for paint

Almost there! I finished the X-overs and did the difficult roundovers (non 90 degree angle means manual corner roundoff). I ran out of tape to protect the front baffle from the roundover bearing.

I Placed Bondo on the soft cnced mdf

I also used bondo for the hardboard to baffle transition. I will post some more pictures soon.

Also, I would look into madisound or parts express for open cell acoustic foam. I use madisounds natural wool stuffing and a lb bag should be more than enough for your speakers. Just make sure that you leave enough space behind your midrange drivers so that you don't muck up the midrange frequencies.

This will orient the ribbon tweeter in the correct position. I already put foam lining in, before starting the second wall. I have a bag of stuffing for the woofers that will go in after as per advice from Jim.

Some rain over the last weekend did help me in getting the box wired, and the cones and X-overs installed. First listening impressions: I can hear voices much better, even with background noise, something I struggled with on the old tv speakers. Breaking glass sounds like glass, bass really pops. The frequency sweeps sound good. I start to get good bass at around 50 Hz (With the sub on during the sweep, the sound starts at 20HZ +0db at (amplifier turned up to 25%) Needless to say cutlery rattles in the cupboard. In case I wasn't sure about the subwoofer being on, all I need to do is test the wall for vibrations :twisted.
