Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Now is that time of the year when we ponder the past events and future hopes, make peace with our shortcomings, and peace with our galactic and local neighbors... for now.

Even I can find the time and spirit to participate in this seasonal event... in spite of the fact that the Force has not been kind to all of us this past year, and many challenges await in the new year.

So I will take some time out from the urgent activities in this sector of the spiral arm to wish all of the HT Guide members and guests a relaxing, peaceful, but thoughtful holiday time. Joyful is strictly up to you.

As it is very unlikely I will be invited to anyone's Holiday repast (for some reason, Sith Lords are only held in slightly higher esteem than the Grinch), just remember I will enjoy the time in my own way, working away in my laboratory on new projects for the coming year...

Happy Holidays! May we all have enough time to tinker and finish some of those projects.

Hopefully this list doesn't turn into an exact copy of my New Years resolution!

OK, this morning gives me a somewhat more "Christmas-y" shot to share, though I can't come anywhere close to Ergo- yet. End of the day may be different.

And still, Best wishes for everyone!

Wow, Jon, Danville is Southwest of me and all we have in Sacramento is rain. So it snowed in Danville? How nice, just enough to get into the spirit without having to scrap windows or dig out chains/snow tires!

Merry Christmas everyone, wherever you are in the world, for a moment maybe we can forget our political leanings, stance on vaccinations/COVID, race, creed, social status, color and whatever else separates us and remember we are essentially the same

That Photo was mostly likely Jon's new Digs...IDAHO. Snow in Danville woulda been new worthy.

That explains a lot. You're a brave man Jon, when I moved from the Kansas City area 20+ years ago I vowed never to move somewhere that has that white stuff on the ground. There is some beautiful country up there, though. I spent several months in Boise at Micron and TI and convinced my boss I needed to rent a 4WD for the weekends

Now, THAT's the way to do it!

But ya see, I have my reasons... among them presenting a research paper at a conference up at Lake Louise in BAMF in 2009, convincing myself that...

                            • I needed a shiny new Honday ST1300 to go touring in the Canadian Rockies and the BAMF area...
                            • And B, I needed to retire somewhere closer to that area, perferrably with some of it's own scenic wonders!
                            • And, it needed to have a favorable cost of living situation, so as to leverage my retirement life.
                            • Hence, the Boise/Treasure Valley area. This has been the plan for about 5 years, and I strated squirreling away resources up here in storage back then.

And here's a picture I took from the conference floor of the hotel during an afternoon break in a session (got a lucky break in the weather, this was in October)

And no, the color of the lake was not photoshopped or altered in any manner... I have a number of pictures, taken with a Sony DSC R1.

Believe it or not, those are some all season snow rated tires on the NSX! I got them put on those rims last December, when I know I might have to be driving the car under inclement conditions to Idaho from SF Bay Area in early February. And that proved to be necessary- we actually had to stop overnight part way in Roseville CA, proceeded the next day when chain law wasn't in effect.

When the snows melted, this is what it looks like.

I have some Bridgestone GC07 Prodrive wheels with pure summer tires on them... but in climate controlled storage here!

Normally the NSX would be in the garage, but I had to make room for a table saw and dual bevel miter saw to work on the OSIRIS top module test box for MEB.

The weird thing is, this second rental we got, after the owners decided to sell the last place we were in, is the same floorpan as we have under construction up in Middleton- should be finished in February. Fortunately I have a 3rd bay garage option on that place, too.

Garage stalls are like potato chips. Whatever you have is not enough! The garage in our San Jose home was just barely big enough to take in both cars. Technically, the new place is 4 parking spots- becuase it's a tandem on one of the basic sides, double deep. That helps- a spot of the motorcycles.

Jon, glad your still thinking of that bike trip to Canada. Covid was great for trading the VFR1200 for the new ride. Maybe we can do a Canada Convo when you head this way.

Hah! I've still got the VFR1200! More deferred gratification, but such is life! I'm looking forward to seeing more of Canadian friends! (former colleagues up there, too)

Best wishes to you for the Holidays and the coming year! Let's hope this Omicron thing isn't quite as bad as some fear- OTOH,. I am very careful and conservative about that, and spend too much time every dat staying abreast of developments.

Yeah, can't complain. That's from last year though - very little snow so far this year. Had the chance to move down here a year ago since both my wife and I can work remote. Surrounded by National forest, and miraculously we have better Internet than we did outside Parker, CO.

Good news. The 2nd most terrifying driving experience I've had was summer tires in the snow - in an Audi TT Quattro at that (I got one of the first delivered into CO back when they were introduced). 'Surprise' snow (as if that is actually possible in Denver) and it was a miracle I made it home without some sort of wreck. Got Hakkapellitas as soon as I could. The most terrifying was driving back from Colorado Springs to Denver in a full-on blizzard, when the semi truck next to me lost traction.......

Is that your FJ? I thought you had an Element as the 'practical' vehicle.

I lived in Colorado 14 years so I can CERTAINLY relate to your driving stories!

I used to have an Element as a daily driver, but back in mid 2017 I realized that I'd be needing to haul a lot of stuff and pull some trailers in the coming years, and I found a good deal on an FJ with 70K miles on it. My first Toyota, and all I can say is that after putting 140K miles on it, all the stories they tell about Toyota serviceability and reliability are true, especially for the FJ. There's a reason the two cars with the highest percentage of resale value in the US are the FJ Cruiser and the 4Runner. They share a common mechanical platform using a 4L DOHC V6. They're valued so highly that if you can find a late model version with lowish miles (say, 30K up to 80-100k) they sell for more than original MSRP. Though I have a reservation for a Cyber truck, my wife thinks I should just bite the bullet and find another good used FJ. OTOH, mine runs fine- other than tires and rims (have a separate set with special snow tires), and one set of rear brake pads, all I've spent on service is the normal scheduled maintenance. I do use synthetic lubricants, though. For example, I've never had a car before that didn't need a new water pump by 100-120K miles. Two sets of spark plugs, but that's scheduled maintenance. Has never had a glitch passing emissions.

I'm curious what the new "Compact Cruiser" will be like, but I suspect that with the compact bit, it's not going to have the EV range I want (300miles+), if it only matches the bZ4X all wheel drive electric crossover. (a bit under 250 miles)

On the coast, 250miles would probably be OK, given population and charger density, but out in NV and ID it can be a long way between even villages having just one gas station, much less an electric charger. For example, on the route I travel to the Bay Area, leaving Nampa, the next charger station I know of is in Winneumucca, about 240 miles away, a fair amount over some significant elevation changes.

                                                Hi Jon,

Yes, the truth about Toyota's is that they are so (boringly) dependable. If you don't want to spend time at the dealership or off the road, just get a Toyota. Our family treats motor vehicles like an appliance eg. toaster. To get from A to B and occasionally C. Nothing more.

So when we hear horror stories of our friends' cars falling apart within months of purchase (Volkswagen), or getting stuck at the dealers for months and months waiting for a service (Peugeot) or blowing a flat tire means $AUD2000 down (Ferrari), we just cringe.

The downside of Toyota, to me, is that they have "If it works, don't change it", mentality.
My friend a mechanic for Ford says they're plenty of work them troubleshooting their latest release vehicles, but nothing to do when he services his own Toyota at home. Just oil and the oil filter, tyres etc.

The downside is that Toyota are bit slow to innovate. You just don't get the latest and greatest internal combustion engines, gadgets, user interface or user experience on your new Toyota (or Lexus) compared to the competition.

Some people also complain about the bland styling... they may have somewhat over the years... but they're no Alfa Romeo...

Valid comments, but you know, a person just has to understand their usage case and emotional needs, and purchase appropriately.

My wife's two daughters have bought high end Audi's and Volvo's, and been surprised because they were so relatively unreliable compared with their previous Lexus, and much more expensive to service or repair.

we got Liubov a RX350 coming off a lease, with 25K miles on it, a couple of years ago, and of course it hasn't needed anything other than regular maintenance service.

My FJ has 210K miles on it, and all it has had is scheduled service and one set of rear brake pads. The interior wears well, is in great shape still, and since I agree about the lack of innovation in areas like Infotainment, I put a Sony CarPlay unit in it is, actually two- Sony's first version, then a year ago an updated model.

My FJ is clearly designed for service, and is easier to work on than my Honda Element was. The Lexus RX350 is very similar in that regard. The difference between those cars and Beverly's VW Passat station wagon (had to take apart part of the front end to do a full normal service) is ludicrous.

Even Liubov likes some things about the FJ better than her Lexus- the seats, for example, on long trips. Who'da thunk... the FJ's provide much better back support, and feel like they were custom designed for me! (6' tall medium build). The Lexus feels like it was designed for shorter, smaller people, and has weird back support, regardless of the adjustable lumbar support.

The Lexus has a more "sporty" driving 3.5L, but the FJ has a very healthy 4.0L DOHC that just gets the job done with the right torque and power all over the rev range. Not as much fun to drive as my NSX, but when you've gotta pass someone quickly on US95 two lane, you're doing over 90 before you know it- very good acceleration at highway speeds. Not something off road trucks are known for.

I remember taking up trip up there with family during my childhood and having tea/cookies at the large hotel (Fairmount) during one summer. Ironically the most memorable moment I had there was trying to wade into one of their rivers right near the hotel - I *thought* I knew what river/stream current was like, but I absolutely was NOT prepared for how strong it was - like rip-off-your-leg strong and cold enough to freeze your leg in no time at all (..also the "rocks" in the river were more like small round boulders). (..at that time the river was only about a foot and a half deep in that area but the water was moving incredibly fast.) It took me less than 10 seconds to realize that wading-in was a profoundly stupid idea. 8O :B

The Fairmount was the hotel the conference was held at.

BTW, though I took a lot of pictures early in the morning before the conference started, that picture was taken through a picture window on the 2nd floor of the conference center, in a break between afternoon sessions!

Nice that this brought up memories for you like that!
