Baby Boom Box takes a fork in the road

Last week I ordered some Blueprint 1203's, since ThomasW and Jack Gilvey seem to be doing a fine job covering the "large" speaker end of the sub world. These babies are probably some of the most unusual 12" sub drivers available.

I had been toying with the idea of a Linkwitz transform box for these (sealed, EQ to get low end, taking advanatage of their enormouse Xmax - about 28 mm). But once I sat down and ran the numbers, a different story emerges.

Bottom line, I'll be doing a true SW-12 Klone, or rather, I'll be cloning a 12" version of our Aerial Stryke AS-15. With the same maximum input, there's over a ten dB difference in maximum output in the low bass, and that's just too much for me to ignore.

But still, the idea was cute, even 102 dB from a 48L sealed box is pretty impressive. But 112 dB from 80L is even more impressive, I think.

    Regards,

    Jon

Don't you love it when UPS shows up at your door with something you've been waiting for?

In this case, it was two of the heaviest small boxes I've ever picked up. And since my back has been a little difficult for me lately, it wasn't all that much fun!

It's easy to see why, though, once you open the outer box:

This is the most serious packing job I've ever seen for a 12" woofer, but then this isn't an ordinary 12" woofer!

From the rear, it's gorgeous. From the front, it's not particularly pretty- maybe menacing is a better word.

Well, all things considered, I'm definitely going to have to try it in both boxes. The baby sealed one won't play loud enough for really big rooms, but it should be a hoot in a smaller living room or for a "master bedroom HT". Now that's a decadent concept, isn't it? Definitely the product of a sick mind. :B

    Regards,

    Jon

that would be a nice sub for a room.

My apartment room at college is ~11.5' x 18'.
Large enough for a queen size bed, a desk....and a recliner couch to go with my HT that I put in the room=)

and for a sub....a pair of LTed 1503's=) they are ony in 45L each and have 250watts RMS each, but it works good enough for that room! It is almost like a single 1503 in 90L with 1000watts (for modeling sake). I am just lucky that the garage is below me. I am sure the people on the first floor are also happy=)

That 1203 is definitely a looker. When viewed on its own, it's even more imposing than the 1803 given the size of the motor in relation to the cone. I'd bet that a 1203 with the LT applied would outperform any of the sealed 12's on the market, servos and all.

From the rear, it's gorgeous. From the front, it's not particularly pretty...
That's the rap on Jennifer Lopez, but I disagree.

          Hey,

JL looks ok from the front to me! :B

But I'm not into "models" or similar standard of attractiveness- and my favorite Hollywood actress are:

          Favorite tall actress: Sigourney Weaver

          Favorite short actress: Holly Hunter

I just saw Holly in a live theater production in San Jose a month ago- she was tremendous. It looks like she's been working out, too, she's got Linda Hamilton shoulders.

          Oops, I guess this is a bit O.T.! :E\

I do have JL on SACD; bought it just out of curiousity, but I enjoy it. Well, at least some of it.

There, finishing up on audio related.

          Regards,

          Jon
