Just started putting together the new SI 80" screen for my 5040UB...

As one of my past colleagues in Germany used to say, "Slow work takes time..."

I suppose it doesn't really translate all that well from the German... maybe it's funnier auf Deutsche...

Regardless, a big shout out to KevinD who set me up with a good deal and direct shipping on a Screen Innovations 7 series fixed screen with Black Diamond Screen material at 1.4 gain.

When I got the lease on this apartment, it occurred to me that since I don't watch broadcast TV (unlike GF who passed) I can go back to my evil bachelor ways and go front projection again. Even my daughter laughed heartily over the mutual memories when I offered to invite her and the rest of the family up to watch the "Back to the Future" trilogy all over again, but on Blu-Ray instead of Laser Disk or DVD... (any of you guys remember Laser Disk?)

Everything was nicely packed in one box; heavy foam stabilizers at each end of the box, and the tube for which the actual screen material was wrapped around had the frame components inside.

The manual has lots of drawing but not many words; this works for a lot of people, but I wouldn't have minded more words...

The hardware box includes gloves for handling the screen and the "bungees" for tensioning it as well as the required Allen head tools for the assembly braces and some spare parts, just in case...

The key first step in assembly is installing the corner pieces AND getting the screen absolutely square- in practice, this means measuring the diagonal several times until they're dead on equal while adjusting the frame positioning before fully tightening the set screws in the corner - initially, you want to go just sort of finger snug.

I connected three sides this way, it's pretty easy to do for the first three, but then I found that it was easiest to install the hardware on the fourth side, and slide it into the existing set

It's quite important to line the pieces up so that the aluminum extrusion pieces are used to align the miter; the black covering may not be of uniform width on the backside, so don't use it as a guide.

When the diagonals match (about 89-3/4" for this build) then I went ahead and tighten everything down, while doing my best to minimize the gap on the aluminum pieces- it seems the black covering on the front side is a bit more proud than the aluminum, so I still had a small gap on the back.

Now it's ready for attaching the screen... as busy as things have been, I doubt I'll get to this before next Sunday evening!

In the category of slow work takes time, especially with multiple moves and another one coming up soon (March) but I expect this will get assembled finally by some time in April.

My friends tell me that retirement is often about deferred gratification, and I tell them they have no idea what that can mean...

Funny. I have the same projector and it’s been unused for nearly two years now. Have an 84in screen waiting for installation (replacement for a 64in screen). I expect to have it all up and running by April as well.

Just reorganizing at home, or getting a new home like I am? New owner orientation is this coming Wednesday... been a lot of stuff going on, what with the 3rd party inspection last week!

How's that old Carly Simon song go, "Anticipation"

You know, being a musician, I get annoyed by video's like this that show her playing a 6 string acoustic, when the recording was made with a 12 string.

And sometimes, I think this song should have been named for the closing refrain..."These are the good old days!"

That's just because I'm kind of grumpy about the "new normal" of the last 5 years!

Just reorganizing. I’ve no interest in moving (I’ve been here nearly 18 years—but in the preceding 15 years, I’d moved 18 times). Time has been the biggest problem. Full time job and full time PhD (plus the lower energy of mid-fifties vs mid-thirties when first put the room together). Still hoping for April but wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up May/June.

If it's May or June, we'll likely be "tied" for timing- a lot of move in progress in the new house, but a lot of pre move in fixing up, too, which slows it all down. Now, I know where the screen is in storage, just have to find the projector!

Hah. I know where my projector is. The screen seems to have gone AWOL. I'm sure it'll turn up soon. Probably going to be more June/July, at this rate (had to take over some courses from a colleague on medical leave, so my end of term grading load has more than doubled). But, at least I got a nice little pair of closed back headphones to drown out my office mates while grade the term papers.

Well, I have my Epson projector located and out of storage at home- getting the screen out of storage locally will be the next task, after a lot of other stuff is finished, like the landscaping plan! And the CC design for Steve- new PuriFi 8" woofers arriving today!
