Apple Home Pod alternative

Hi Guys,
I like the idea of the apple HomePod just a small wireless speaker that I can place on my patio, garage ...back deck just when I want occasional background music. I like the idea that I play Pandora through my main system via my Ipad and an Apple TV and would really like to play the same music synchronized with my main system...so as I move outside the same stuff is playing..but don't want to pay apple $350 as I know what we are capable of sound quality wise with the systems we create...any thoughts or anyone built a similar portable speaker?

A Raspberry pi single board computer running Volumio mated to a HiFiBerry Amp+ or Amp2 might be able to accomplish this. I recall Volumio having AirPlay support but it has been quite some time since I've used it.
