Exclamation A Guide to HTguide.com Completed Speaker Designs.

This is a guide intended to help people locate and choose between DIY Speaker Designs completed here at HTGuide's Mission Possible DIY Forum or by friends. These are designs that you can have confidence in. These designs are fully documented and ready for building. These designs were based on in-box measurements and have been constructed. Additionally, most of the designs here (in one form or another) have been extremely well received at various DIY events. These designs are well supported by the good folks at HTguide. If you have any questions about the designs, please, pull up a chair and start a thread.

This is not an index of the entire web as there are just too many to keep track of. There is nothing wrong with designs elsewhere, and them not appearing here is not a reflection upon them. I just don't have the time.

    Other good websites are:

Special thanks goes out to our fearless forum leaders: ThomasW and Jon Marsh. Additional thanks to all of the designers that have given their designs away freely to the community.

    Notes:
    1) Price listed is typically the cost of the drivers and recommended crossover components at the time of original construction. Prices typically do NOT include required items, such as: the enclosures, wood, binding posts, flared ports, poly fill, etc.
    2) Prices listed are for a PAIR of speakers.
    3) Designer typically references the crossover designer.

This is intended to be a living document that will get updated as new designs are added. Last Updated: December 1, 2014!

Designs are organized by Type (2-way, 3-Way, Center, Open Baffle) and then Price.

Note: People frequently ask for designs intended to be placed inside entertainment centers, bookcases, or on shelves, or on walls. If you intended to place your speakers anywhere but away from room boundaries, please understand the effect this has and choose a design best suited to that location. Some designs here are designed to be near the wall. In-Wall designs can be adapted to inside entertainment centers.

Please see this thread for an understanding of what impact that makes. http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php4?t=34016& (Graphs repeated for those that won't follow the link)

    The Chameleon

    Design: Stand-Mounted 2-Way Closed Box/Passive Radiator/Ported (Your choice)
    Price: $268 - $466 (Various options)
    Size: 17" H x 10" W x 12.5" D, Parts Express 0.75 cu. ft. box
    Tweeter: SB Acoustics SB25STC-C000-4
    Mid-Woofer: SB Acoustics SB17NRXC35-8
    Designer: David Ralph
Other Design Notes: Options are shown for closed box, passive radiator or port. Multiple crossover implementations are also shown. The box highpass should work reasonably well with a separate subwoofer with the common highpass of 85Hz. System sensitivity is set to get a bit more low end extension.
Comments: The strong point of this design is the midrange. Vocals are especially clear and natural. Sibilance is not emphasized at all, yet the highs are extended. The limit is the low end response, but that must be expected from a 6.5" driver. If a subwoofer is used, consider running the system full range rather than from the subwoofer crossover highpass. The system impedance for most crossovers shown goes down to 4 ohms, but an amp rated 100W into 8-ohms (or better) should work for most music systems.

    Designer: Mark K
    Other Design Notes:
    Related Designs:
Comments: This project developed to satisfy my curiosity on a number of issues. Having done a number of tests on the Dayton RS series, as well as others, I was curious to see how well my measurements could be used to help guide crossover design. I was also curious to see if I could get almost as good bass extension with an 8" driver, in the same size sealed box that would typically be used for a ported 7" driver. I also wanted to try out the Cauer/elliptic filters to see how easy they are to implement, and to look at the off axis behavior of this type of crossover compared with a more typical LR4 crossover.

    Wavecor Ardent

Price: About $2900 for drivers, crossovers as built vary between about $1200 and $1500; cabinet materials including LBL panels for front panel about $400-500 in materials.

Size:* Basic dimensions are 42-43" tall (depending on base design, whether tall base is used with crossover installed in bottom), 11" wide, and about 16" deep at any one point, remembering that the total front to back depth from floor to top is greater because of the angle.*

Tweeter: ScanSpeak D3004/6640-00 Beryllium dome tweeter - other SS models (6620, 6600) were evaluated and discarded. The 6640 has low resonance and low distortion amplification, and a minimal breakup, matching the Accuton midrange driver in it's overall low coloration and very low high order distortion.

Midrange:* Accuton C90-9-079, matched pair. Core concept for this speaker was the use of this midrange driver- due to low resonance, low distortion, and extended response, no other type considered.

Woofer:* Wavecor SW223BD01 - 4 ohm, wired in series. A number of woofers were considered and tested in prototypes during the evolution of this design, including the Seas ER18RNX and the ScanSpeak Illuminator 18WU/8747T-00; and the 8" aluminum ScanSpeak Revlator; the desired low frequency performance required shifting to a sealed design and searching highly linear small form factor woofers, which like the Aurasound NS12, straddle the line between a subwoofer and woofer construction, offering a very stiff cone, exceptionally linear motor, and declining distortion up to 1 kHz; this supported creating a sealed alignment with a robust well damped bottom end similar to the much larger Isiris system, but of necessity at a lower sensitivity point (approximately 82 dB, similar to Magneplanars).

    Designers/team:* Jon Marsh with DAR47 and Benthe8track

Other Design Notes:*Crossover is similar to the Isiris, being a three way implementation of a modified LR3 concept designed to work specifically with the normal driver offset delays of drivers mounted on a common front panel. Woofers are connected in series, to provide an easy to drive amplifier load. The net load impedance is very benign and quite flat, especially considering no external conjugate networks are used to reduce impedance in the crossover regions; this is an inherent characteristic of all realizations to date of this crossover type, which may improve driver damping and limits impedance swings for amplifiers to deal with, especially vacuum tube and non-feedback types like Ayre Acoustics or Theta.

Felt diffraction control is used in the grille panel, in conjunction with the crossover optimization to produce a wide vertical window with relatively small changes in response and minimizing diffraction effects to the degree possible. This measurement was not made with any attempt to optimize the low frequency positioning in the room (it was not in a normal listening position) and so response variations around 100Hz and below are due to non optimal setup and the long measurement window (200 msec).

Distortion was correlated from one of the frequency response sweeps, at a level of about 90 dB. All drivers exhibit good performance, but especially the midrange.

I need a little help filling in some of the blanks and checking links. Please post them below and I'll try and incorporate them.

Designers, please feel free to let me know what you want in the comments section, such as: intended for.....

I'm considering adding small thumbnail images, but that could get to be a lot of images. Thoughts?

Thomas feel free to edit as you see fit.

Hey Ryan - this is a great idea. A few notes and recommendations... As you have quite a few designs left to add, I would recommend that you categorize the lists into a few threads with common titles. Categories may include:

    1. 2-way Designs
    2. Multi-way Designs
    3. Subwoofer Designs

Also, the Statement series is really a joint design. Jim did the driver selection and the cabinets, and Curt did the crossover and final voicing. This would apply to both the center and the minis as well. Jim & Curt - please correct me if I'm wrong.

Other designs that I can think of quickly: (but there are a number more)
    MT8A
    Aethers
    Scrappys
    NeoCC

    Thanks,
    Todd

    Todd,

I think for this first venture, I'm going to keep this to designs done here. There are too many out on the web to keep track of otherwise.

    C,
I didn't think your RS150 was documented enough for inclusion.

The RS 3 ways (MTMWW's) are about 1000 bucks in parts I believe.

Is the price on the Khanspires correct? 320-350 bucks? Seems really cheap

Are these prices raw components or boxes too?

IIRC it's ~$1000-1200 on the 3-ways, depending on what exactly you put into 'em.

Great thread, Ryan! Let's not forget the dipole and omni designs.

    Aethers
    http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php4?t=27877

    Arvo Pärt
    http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php4?t=7644

    Mentor II
    http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php4?t=25074

I'd leave the subs out of this thread as there's already a sub thread in missions accomplished.

Edit: I think the unnamed Seas Excel design is worth a mention too. You can't really call it a Thor anymore if you use Jimangie's crossover and one of the linked cabinet designs from Scottmoose.

Lineup MaxxL16 Center Channel and WWMTM can be added to the Lineup Maxx examples. It includes the Seas L16 woofer in place of the TB W5.

    Hi Ryan,

Good idea. Here are a few blank fillers:

Mini Statements - $531 as i built them

    Statements center - $294

Also to add to what Todd said, Wayne Wendel was our official voicing person. Sharp young ears help us old guys.

I spent a lot of time on this today and made lots of updates. Further updates will have to wait a few days. But, we'll get there.

    I agree about adding Dan's Omini's.

I'll also add the Lineup Maxx L16. Jed or Dougie, you mind just typing it up, and then I'll cut and paste it into place. I also need prices for all the different Lineup versions. It took a long time to track everything down, and I was only finding partial BOMs.

I also started to add the Mt8 and some of Jon's OB speakers, but I wasn't seeing enough data.

This is also just the currently active designs. Designs with drivers that are no longer in production, I just don't think belongs.

I'll put it on my to-do list unless Dougie gets to it first.

There I changed it a bit... The woofers are 300 for 4 of them... so the Maxx's are 1000 bucks around. 1200 should be about right...

Thanks Dougie. That worked well, I just cut and pasted it in. Still could use prices for the rest of the Lineup Series.

If anyone else wants to do a quick write up of some of the other designs mentioned, that would be great. HOWEVER, I want to confine this to OUR designs here at HTguide - designs we know are good and that we support. I don't want to be the maintainer of a list of DIY designs that no one here can answer questions about, etc. So keep that in mind before doing a write up of whatever. Someone else can start a thread for the rest of the web. But, I'll warn you that it takes a lot longer than you think to pull all that info together.

Corrections are more than welcomed. I keep seeing a few typos that I'm trying to fix.

Thumbnail photos next, then different organization, because I don't like how the Lineup and Statements get spread out when done by price, but.... price is how most people think until they see the series.

Also you might want to break it up into beginner friendly designs and more advanced designs. I know a lot of people come here asking "Whats a good speaker for a beginner" something like the Statements or Maxx's I would say are intermediate so people look and see something they like it would be nice to know what they are getting into as far as skills required.

Lineup Maxx crossover and drivers equal $870
Lineup MaxxCC crossover and drivers equal $250
Lineup MaxxL16CC crossover and drivers equal $344
Lineup MaxxL16 WWMTM crossover and drivers equal $850

The pricing above follows the format you selected for "drivers and crossover" costs so the estimates in the first post need to be changed.

I just wanted to point out that the Dayton RS 3-ways are an MTMWW design, not TMWW design.

    Otherwise, this is really great!

    Hi Ryan,

Sorry I missed this but the center uses RS180's rather than RS225's. Could you also add Wayne Wendel's name as the voicer.

    Thanks!

    Excellent idea Ryan!

Thanks Dennis for suggesting my omni projects. The one you linked, however, though interesting and good for someone contemplating doing an omni design to read, it was never a completed project. Just a single prototype was built and after numerous crossovers, I have not been happy with it, so would not want to publish it as a completed design. The original Mentor omni, I would publish and the HOSS, I would publish. The threads are here, though I never put them in the final form with parts lists, etc.:
    Mentor
    HOSS

I do have the plans in cad and the crossover designs which I can be sure to update in a last post on those threads. Ryan, I will try and get the info for those projects to you as well.

Great idea, great thread... (and getting greater!)

One thing, is the price for the Modula NeoD a bit optimistic? Or did Jon sneak in a "budget" crossover BOM that I didn't notice? Last I looked, that was about right for ONE...

Ah, well... Was hoping for some magic there. That's thee #1 reason I'm not building a pair right now, cheapness...

I do have a pair of D6.8's AND a pair of RS52's sitting around doing nothing... so it's not as big of a jump as starting from scratch...

Self debate... it's a scary thing...

    Ryan,

I'll try to add some comments and design notes (maybe Chris can add a little as well). I do know that the crossover is an 8th-order cauer-elliptic type. You could definitely add that to the design notes.

Also, for related designs we should provide a link to the xo design that Chris did for the Dennis Murphy WTMW center channel that matches the big 3-ways. I'll see if I can find that this afternoon as well. I think the final design is somewhere around page 8 of that huge thread, but I have to double-check.
