Stereogram's

Anyone else love these things? I spent a couple of years staring through a stereoscope at aerial photography so I usually have a pretty easy time seeing the 3D images hidden in these images.

I'd love so see some more examples

this one's very cool

I found some much harder ones here if you'd like a challenge

Very cool. I didn't know these could work on a PC monitor.

Someone used to sell software that allowed "anyone" to make their own stereograms.

Right at the end of the stereogram craze someone came up with a varation on the theme...3D images where hidden within a much more realistic, photographic-looking piece of art. Sorry I can't describe it better but my memory is fuzzy here. I seem to remember vertical lines within the art being prominent in deciphering the 3D image. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Sorry thomas  Have you tried their tips area on how to see them? Basically you start with your nose against the screen then slowly back away while trying to keep your eyes unfocused...eventually you should start to see the image at which point you can start to try and focus on the hidden image....at least that's how they recomend doing it.

I basically unfocus my eyes so you see double of everything then looking at the stereogram force your eyes to slowly refocus in and out until you start to see something of the 3D image then your eyes should naturally focus in at the right distance to see the image. As I said after years of looking at aerial photography I usually can see these pretty quickly so I find them a lot of fun.

DLP don't give me headaches, but trying to see images here sure did. Like Tex, all I see is a smudge from my nose. The first one, I think is a bunch of Fords.

The first one's a single ford blue oval with Ford written out in the middle.

What's interesting about these all lined up is once you get your eyes focused at the right distance you can simply scroll down and see all the other images instantly

Christ, took me 30 seconds to get my eyes uncrossed enough to type my name for this post. Hate these things too.

A friend has a large framed print that looks like it SHOULD be one of these, but contains no embedded image. Hilarious listening to people argue over what the image is, or watching people who can usually lock into them real quick struggle with the fake one. Minor revenge for my friend, who evidently has some obscure eye problem that prevents him from being able to see these, or normal 3D movies (and no, the problem is not being blind in one eye).

Evil invention (the real ones).

I've been doing research on these and haven't been able to find what I'm looking for. There are two great programs out there to make your own although I don't remember what they are called off hand. One allowes you to take two pictures of an object or even scenery that are about 4 or 5 inches apart horizontally and it automatically creates a depth map image out of the two images. You then use the depth map image in the second program, provide a pattern background and it will scramble the background image automatically according to the depth map image. The more complex the image the more you are unlikely to make out what the image is when you get it in the stereogram.

What I am looking for (or really just inquiring about) is why the background image that is crambled some random pattern. Does it have to be? Couldn't it be possible to create a stereogram using the actual image (I suppose a third one in between the other two used to create the depth map image) as the background image? That way instead of seeing the 3d object in some crazy pattern, you would actually see it as if you would in real life. Real color.

I'm good at getting these and was able to get everyone that you linked to in an average of 3 seconds. I've been able to transfer my focus from one to another (when more than one is in front of me) without having to refocus my eyes. This ability led me to wander if, since a motion picture is just a bunch of stills shown in sequence, could you create a motion stereogram in real color. As if you were watching a motion picture but in 3d without the use of special glasses of any kind.

You are correct. I have a book of these and the earlier ones in the book are made from images of actual things, i.e. wallpaper type patterns of a rose and stem, or other similar things. The resulting "3D silhouette" is necessarily of low resolution, equivalent to the density of detail in the pattern.

In theory you would be able to make a motion picture based on this principle, even fairly simplay from an existing 3D movie with software such as you are looking for. The issue is, as difficult as it is for most people to even get the image into focus, very very few people could (or would want to) maintain focus for a moving image to play.

I will look up the name and published of the book when I return home next month.

My family has always been able to see these stupid things. I never have been able to. But after looking at these intently, I finally seen one. And I seen all the rest too. Now I know what I've been missing. Sore eyes.
We have books on these. I guess I'll have to check them out.

I think you're right Kevin D. I can never see those danged things, but first-time posters from Romania hitting a 5 year old stereogram thread can't be a good thing.

I think it's time to close down this thread. First of all, it's 5 years old, and second, spammers seem to be latching on to it like hungry dogs to a fresh sausage.
