Sorry to hear about your cat John. It's never going to be easy loosing a member of your family, big or small. My condolences.

All my recent activity is starting to catch up to my body. I went rafting on the weekend and got tossed up on a rapid and down on to one of the metal bars holding the pontoons...BIG bruise on my bum. Yesterday I was doing yard work and then demo/prep etc on my side gate I'm replacing from about 10am until about 4:30pm then went for a 20km bike ride with my niece and nephew and a swim. Jammed my left pointer finger somewhere in there and it's KILLING me. That and I was sweating for about 11 hours straight yesterday... I'm getting too old for this crap

Then the kicker was trying to watch a movie last night and getting an "H02" error on my about 6-7 year old Denon DVD-1600. Which after a quick Google search is apparently a bad spindle motor Damn thing was one of the highest rated DVD players made too

So now I have to look in to getting it repaired... not sure how much $$ I want to sink in to it though. I mean if it's going to be more than $100 I may as well get a new player. F'n pisser So I'm thinking of either building that HTPC I've been talking about or getting the new Oppo BD/Universal player. I'm leaning towards the HTPC I think though. Any thoughts guys?

I'm still on a PS3 - does all I want. I put a 500gb hdd in it so there's now room for all my pics, music and movie rips. Can't fault it. The browser is decent, I can access email, I use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and that's fine too.

I always said though, that I'd buy a stand alone BD player when the right model presented itself. None havr as yet for me so I'll sit tight there. I am however loosing out on HD audio as I'm still using my Rotel RSX-1056. A BD player with analoge outputs would sort that out or replace the Rotel with a new reciever. I'm in line to go the BD player route though as I really like the Rotel.

Doesn't play flac files last time I checked and I've got near 8000 of them on my media server. I'm not a big gamer either so I think a HTPC would be more useful to me and still be able to play the odd game if I want. I'm mostly concerned with playback quality (audio and video) vs a stand alone player like the new Oppo (which also plays DVD-A/SACD discs). I know you could play DVD-A (through Power DVD if I recall) on a PC anybody know about SACD's?

Don't really need a BD player either but a I could always add a BD drive to the PC too at any point.

Nah, no flac - just WAV for lossless. Pity really. Actually I use 320k mp3 on the PS3 - I went down the apple lossless codec for my sins and I'm gonna change anytime soon given the pain I went through to rip 8000 CDs in the firstplace!

I don't believe you can get SACD on a PC, although it's a few years since I followed that particular discussion. Just DVD-A. Might be all moot with some of the new SCs decoding HD audio - perhaps the way forward.

Chris - spinach is your only man! Worked for Popeye! Good luck with the test!

Very sorry about your car, John.

Vincent, me too--PS3 is doing just fine for me as a BD player still, I have no reason to replace.

Got a fitness test today. I'm praying for God's strength on it--they've always been tough for me.

BD play back on an HTPC is still a pain as you have to launch a separate player and what not. It's fine if you keep a kb and mouse connected but I don't on mine. Doesn't matter either way as I rip all my stuff to the server.

On the other hand Jason, did you see that thread I posted in Tower about the Atom motherboard with the onboard HDMI 9400gs or something like that, supports full hardware decoding on the video card so you can smoothly play back BD files. It's pretty neat. I'm seriously considering building a couple for around other rooms of the house running linux with XBMC.

Thanks guys..

It was so strange today, even though I knew he was gone. It was like everytime I did something that made some noise, I still kind of expected him to show up and nose around to see what was going on.

Even making the bed this morning was a big letdown for me. When someone was making the bed to change sheets and stuff, he always had to jump in and "help", it was funny to see. When someone was doing the bed, that probably was like going to Disney World for him, he loved getting in the sheets and blankets when you were trying to put them on the bed. He was a total indoor cat from the day he was a kitten, that was never allowed to go outdoors, and he never tried to get out. Great manners, and he would never go on a table. Also he was the only cat I've ever had, that did not like drinking milk, he prefered water.

I have not yet decided if I'll get another cat or not, I probably will but if I do, I think I'll wait until early winter time. I have to do some work on the house, and I'm also having someone else coming in next month to put new siding on the house, so it probably would be better not to have a new kitten in the way of all that. I know I'll never get another one like he was, I have had a few cats over the last 35-40 years, and none of the others were anywhere near like this guy was.

Not worried about BD playback for now anyway Dougie and I'll have to look in to it but I'm thinking something like this mobo:

Probably going to get something like this Dougie:

I'd rather have a flying car over video in print too Nick

That's cool Jason, was just presenting a very cost effective method Other then that motherboard you just need a case and hard drive really. I guess some sort of optical drive if you want one. At the same time I'm not sure I'd give up my big HTPC for one though. Only thing I can say is make certain the onbaord video can handle all forms of HD playback decoding. Unless you aren't worried about CPU usage in which case it doesn't matter to much. I find that with hardware acceleration though the video actually looks a good bit better.

Happy b-day, Jason!

Jason and Paul, I just got approved to travel to Victoria next month for a conference. Unless I take vacation days afterwards, I won't be able to come to Vancouver, though. Going to be a crazy time. I'm doing a day of work in California, then zipping over to CEDIA in Atlanta for a week, then right to Victoria with no rest, and going to be doing major research in Victoria for my Beijing conference project coming up in November. I'll be brain dead.

Nick, I'm interested to hear your thoughts--I just read some news articles today about Mitt Romney's healthcare reform that he did in Massachusetts. I'm wondering if it worked, or what's happening with it, whether it could be extracted to the larger US program or not.

Thanks guys Went and saw Cage the Elephant and Manchester Orchestra at the Commodore Ballroom last night with friends to celebrate. Had dinner at a great Irish pub downtown called Ceilly's. Good food, good drink, good friends and good lord the waitresses had short little plaid skirts on!

Chris if we can somehow get together that would be great! Sounds like you're going to be pretty busy though

I've been meaning to ask you Jason, from the time you found out about the cancer to the time you first had treatment had 6 months passed? A lot of people I know seem to have this bad image of the Canadian health system. I have a friend thats from Canada and he said it was bad but I have quite a few other friends that still live in Canada and they seem to love it. It's really hard to get a clear picture that's for sure.

By the way if you don't feel comfortable talking about it then no pressure at all just ignore it and I won't bring it back up.

Happy Birthday Jason, and many, many happy returns! Carolyn, that the new lady in your life? Hmmm, you'd never get short skirts in any of the pubs here.... Not the done thing and more's the pity.

Cool! The take-off numbers are hugely impressive. The C-17 carries one stout quartet of engines. Can you tell us the rate of climb , empty? Seems like it might be sensitive info , but that puppy must haul a$$ vertically for a warehouse w/wings!

Yeah, if I'm lightweight and do a max powered takeoff and departure, I can do maybe 10,000 feet per minute in a sustained climb, and a zoom climb of maybe 25,000 feet per minute for shorter bursts. Of course, when I'm max gross weight, sometimes I can only do 300-500 feet per minute.

So a zoom climb rate of approx. one mile in less than 13 seconds ,four times , for a minute. Holy smokes! There are pilots around who flew fighters that couldn't touch that. Then again , 50 years ago a lot of combat aircraft were just about all done at 25,000 feet. That sounds like a fun plane to fly.

Doug! Good on 'ya!! It's about time things went your way in that department.
