We'll try phase 2 of pictures combined, if things slant toward a particular way, teh next phase may break out portrait and nature.

Thanks, and have fun.

A mix for fun

Farms in spring are beautiful right now...if the rain clouds will stay I'll shoot some Saturday. Imagine a blanket of yellow mustard, pink and magenta orchards and bright, intense green.

I am by no means a good photographer, but I do try, and just got a Canon with an IS lens. Just learning and having fun.

Awesome pictures.... I live in Cincinnati, so we have nothing but crashed cars and trash to take pictures of....

Lex 05-20-2007 01:16 AM

Joe, trash can be interesting, shoot it. lol.

For me, I'm on a Leica frenzie, and am amazed with their optics.

Danbry39 06-24-2007 12:57 PM

Nice photographs to all.

I forgot how to post photographs. Will do so once my daughter's boyfriend again explains to me how to resize them so that I can fit them into the forum.

Until then, I stand in awe of your fine photography skills.

Another Hobby Of Mine. I ride the dirt bike by the truck (XR400) Truck and Trailer are mine. Reference to the green crate is it's an item our camp can be identified by.

Oh and some nice nature too.. Photos I've taken while out and about.

Danbry39 06-28-2007 12:18 AM

OK...just three more, then I'll stop...at least for now. :B

Being of Japanese descent, I drive my daughters all the way into Japan Town in San Francisco for their hair cuts. So, today, my eldest daughter went from very long to very short.

Chris D 06-28-2007 02:37 AM

Hey, Greenhorn! I could use some advice--I'm considering getting an ATV for Alaska. Primary purpose would be to clear a snowy driveway in winter with a plow. Secondary purpose would be to mow a large yard with a lawn mower attachment in the summer. After that, I figure I'll probably get into having a bit of fun with it, although I've never gone 4-wheeling before.

What should I be looking for in an ATV for features and such? I can't find anybody to tell me, especially objectively--why buy a Honda vs a Polaris or Arctic Cat or Yamaha or Kawasaki or whatever?

Alaric 06-28-2007 10:01 PM

Chris , I would go with Honda. They have one heck of a dealer network , make stone reliable engines , and tend to be easier to work on. I've worked on them all and found Polaris to be awful 8 or 9 years ago. That may well have changed. If possible , find a multi-line dealer and ask the mechanics for some help. They'll have a fair idea of the idiosyncrasies of the makes and models . Just finding out which ones are in the shop the most , and why , can be a big help. Getting stranded far from home in AK can't be all that much fun! As a general rule-fewer bells and whistles means fewer things to break. :D

Keith, where is Japanese town in San Fran?

Plus since you put up some San Fran pics, I feel compelled to do the same.. :B

WIDESCREEN WARNING!!!

Danbry39 06-29-2007 09:25 PM

It's around Geary and Fillmore, Soundgravy, a few blocks off of Van Ness, where Tommy's Famous Buffalo Stew is, if you know that area.

I know it sounds ridiculous to take a 200 mile round trip to get the hair for both my daughters done, but we just combine it with a trip to SF.

By the way, that's a beautiful WIDE SCREEN of the wharf area. Did you do that by stitching? With a tripod? Never tried stitching, but if I can get that result, I'll give it a go.

RobP 06-30-2007 05:28 PM

Ahh, ok I know where that area is,What area do you live in Keith?

That wide screen pic was just a quick shot I took by hand walking from the parking garage down to the pier, no tripod or stitching was done, I used my Canon Rebel Digital for the shot

RobP 06-30-2007 05:33 PM

Here is another one that I took later that day, one of my favorite pics of that day

Danbry39 07-01-2007 12:38 PM

I don't live in SF, but just enjoy visiting there. I live in a town south of Sacramento - Elk Grove.

By the way, that second picture you took is one of my favorite places in San Francisco. To me, the architecture and landscaping is awesome.

I've always liked this picture. I took this picture of my nephew when we were riding out at the desert. Chris, sent you a PM.

Here are some of my very amateur shots with a Canon A620.

Lex 08-27-2007 02:24 PM

yesterday's shots.

Chris D 08-28-2007 02:05 AM

Mmmmmmmmmmmm.... love the mountains.

Finleyville 08-28-2007 09:15 AM

Nice shots Lex. Looks like the lighting was just right in them.

Lex 08-28-2007 12:26 PM

Thank you guys.

Well Michael, approve this: lol. The lighting was just right, because I made it just right, lol.

The first shot was taken with a Singh-Ray Galen Rowell Graduated Neutral Density filter on my wide angle lens using a cokin P-style holder, rotated at a angle with the 3 stop filter line cutting around the tree line at an angle to preserve the lighting in the forground, while not overexposing the lighting in the sky as the sun sets. I had a little vignetting, so I did have to crop the shot a bit at the rlght side. The left side could probably stand cropping a little too. I think I am going to have to go to an 86mm filter system next to avoid vignetting on my wide angles. sigh. Live and learn I guess...

The bottom pic, my details are schetchy, I don't think I went to near as much trouble on this shot, but I probably should have, to level out the exposure level...

I was at Clingman's Dome, over 5000 feet elevation, and the highest point in the Smokies. IF you hike a bit, it does go on up to the actual top, but this is close from the parking area at Clingman's, Sunday evening about 7:30 Eastern.

Lex -

Thanks for sharing those beautiful mountain scenes, which are all the more impressive knowing that you didn't doctor them on your computer (I don't count cropping as "doctoring" -- see below), but rather, used your skill with the camera and related equipment that you carried along on the "shoot", to get the lighting and focus effects you wanted when you photographed the scenes.

Of course, Ansel Adams did some of his best work in the darkroom to get his celebrated images "just right", so post-doctoring isn't necessarily BAD, if it results in a pleasing image. But it is still quite a feat to achieve the desired effects without it.

The real skill that makes a photograph stand out is visualizing and composing the shot -- and judicious cropping is a legitimate photographer's tool to get that right. You are getting even better and better at that, too!

Congrats!

Burke

PS -- there are quite a few other remarkable shots in this thread by several of you, but my internet connection is woefully slow tonight for some reason, so it is difficult to scroll up and down to see them and then try to compose comments about them. Since Doug's mountain scene photos were closest to the Edit box, his shots got the most attention this evening. :>)

Lex 09-13-2007 10:46 AM

Thanks Burke, what I do in the digital darkroom, I consider honest editing for the most part. I think my pinks were a bit overdrawn by increasing saturation in the second image. Some people distinctly do not like that look. But sometimes, I like the magentas to come out.

But the scene above that was achieved with no more than variable ND filter, composition tools, and basic brightness, contrast adjustments. I really like the first shot. I'll enjoy it for long time I think and it will likely be considered one of this year's favorites.

These are some great pictures. I really like the ones of the ocean. Makes me wish I was back there.
