Do you realize how hard it is to get a flip when your network connection is via two tin cans and a string? :BThey not usin' tin cayns een Bammer. Dahn sawth they use Dixie cups!

(Ok, bad pun! :naughty: )

Once I made a phone out of strings and Dixie cups. I found the sound quality was better than tin cans, which I found to be too tinny sounding.

(Oops, sorry, bad pun again! :smackbutt: )

Good morning folks! OSIM!! :(

Burke: Glad to find another fan of Barbershop. You hit the nail right on the head...this movie is full of good values and a good outlook on life, without being warm or fuzzy. Ice Cube is a very talented man...first saw him in Three Kings. He has a future in Hollywood, no doubt.

Reality bites this week...I have a big paper due and a final on Friday. Oh well, might as well get crackin'...

Have a good day folks!

Dixie cups.... lol

Funny thing is I did an experiment back in Jr. school that required 2 coffee cans, carbon from inside a couple batteries, wire, and a few other things. I can't remember what it was... I think it was a telegraph. Been too long ago.

whoever did that spanking graphic, could stand to make some adjustments. His b@tt crack shows before he pulls his shorts down, then it's red before he actually spanks it. Geesh, get it right!
The red is from previous spankin's..... I mean, how many times has the poor feller been spanked? His booty never has time to be anything but red.

Thanks for the compliment on the picture George.

Watched part of "Oh Brother, Where Art Though" (I think that's the name of it).... what striking resemblences! Gonna watch the remainder tonight. Gotta love the Soggy Bottom Boys.

Think before you speak...

1. I walked into a hair salon with my husband and three kids in tow and asked loudly, "How much do you charge for a shampoo and a blow job?" I turned around and walked back out and never went back. My husband didn't say a word... he knew better.
- Melinda Lowe, Seguin, TX

2. I was at the golf store comparing different kinds of golf balls. I was unhappy with the women's type I had been using. After browsing for several minutes, I was approached by one of the good-looking gentlemen who works at the store. He asked if he could help me. Without thinking, I looked at him and said, "I think I like playing with men's balls."
- Colleen Collins, Ferndale, MI

3. My sister and I were at the mall and passed by a store that sold a variety of nuts. As we were looking at the display case, the boy behind the counter asked if we needed any help. I replied, "No, I'm just looking at your nuts." I turned beet-red and walked away. To this day, my sister has never let me forget.
- Faye Emerick, Ellerslie, MD

(Pr@ and Erik, look out as you may experience this one in 2-3 years!)

4. While in line at the bank one afternoon, my toddler decided to release some pent-up energy and ran amok. I was finally able to grab hold of her after receiving looks of disgust and annoyance from other patrons. I told her that if she did not start behaving "right now" she would be punished. To my horror, she looked me in the eye and said in a voice just as threatening, "If you don't let me go right now, I will tell Grandma that I saw you kissing Daddy's pee-pee last night!" The silence was deafening after this enlightening exchange. Even the tellers stopped what they were doing. I mustered up the last of my dignity and walked out of the bank with my daughter in tow. The last thing I heard when the door closed behind me were screams of laughter.
- Amy Richardson, Stafford, VA

5. A lady picked up several items at a discount store. When she finally got up to the checker, she learned that one of her items had no price tag. Imagine her embarrassment when the checker got on the intercom and boomed out for all the store to hear, "PRICE CHECK ON LANE THIRTEEN, TAMPAX SUPER SIZE ."That was bad enough, but somebody at the rear of the store apparently misunderstood the word "Tampax" for "THUMBTACKS." In a business-like tone, a voice boomed back over the intercom. "DO YOU WANT THE KIND YOU PUSH IN WITH YOUR THUMB OR THE KIND YOU POUND IN WITH A HAMMER?"
- Diane E. Amov

6. Have you ever asked your child a question too many times? My three-year-old son had a lot of problems with potty training and I was on him constantly. One day we stopped at Taco Bell for a quick lunch in between errands. It was very busy, with a full dining room. While enjoying my taco, I smelled something funny, so of course I checked my seven-month-old daughter, and she was clean. Then I realized that Danny had not asked to go potty in a while, so I asked him if he needed to go, and he said "No." I kept thinking, "Oh Lord, that child has had an accident, and I don't have any clothes with me." Then I said, "Danny, are you SURE you didn't have an accident?" "No," he replied. I just KNEW that he must have had an accident, because the smell was getting worse. Soooooo, I asked one more time, "Danny, did you have an accident?" This time he jumped up, yanked down his pants, bent over and spread his cheeks and yelled. "SEE MOM, IT'S JUST FARTS!!" While 30 people nearly choked to death on their tacos laughing! He calmly pulled up his pants and sat down. An old couple made me feel better by thanking me for the best laugh they'd ever had!

7. This had most of the state of Michigan laughing for 2 days and a very embarrassed female news anchor who will, in the future, likely think before she speaks. What happens when you predict snow but don't get any....a true story... We had a female news anchor who, the day after it was supposed to have snowed and didn't, turned to the weatherman and asked: "So Bob, where's that 8 inches you promised me last night?" Not only did HE have to leave the set, but half the crew did too they were laughing so hard!

Makita makes some pretty serious "toys"-- those should be a lot of fun to work with on future projects. We have a store in Houston that claims to carry at least one of every product currently in the Makita line. It's cool to browse there to see what's new and sometimes even buy something. (Kind of like at the HT stores.) :>)

Cuz the first time the baby wakes up from a loud movie....your wife...ahem....Actually, newborns aren't affected much by noise, after all it isn't exactly quiet inside mommy for 9 months. If you continue to listen to movies/music at normal levels while baby's sleeping then baby will be used to it and will sleep right through it. If you make the house "silent" while baby sleeps, well, baby will wake up at the drop of a pin after a while. So continue to enjoy that home theater, and little Lauren will accept it as normal and will sleep right through it! ;)

Yeah...in theory....in practise...not so much...

every kid is different, trust me on that one. My oldest has from day one been able to sleep through a tornado. My youngest will wake on the slightest drop of a pin.

We did nothing different for the 2 including the "sleeping through noise is good" theory.

Your Mileage May Vary...books are a good starting point but you eventually throw that out the window as you begin to understand who your kids are ;)

Well considering she was born into this world in a movie theater with a movie playing (sleepy hollow) I think she'll be fine with it:) Actually the ceiling of the theater is insulated as well so as long as the LFE isn't shaking the house you don't hear that much upstairs. A lot of people say listening to music during birth can help take the mothers mind off the pain...we had movies playing all day which glenda really liked since she was always mentally recreating the movie scenes when she couldn't see the screen etc...one of the benefits of birthing at home I guess

Yep, that's true Gordon.... headphones should do the trick. That BOOM BOOM ain't gonna sit too well with mama rockin' the baby huh? lol

I can remember Angibug taking our headphones and putting them on her stomach when she was pregnant, playing music for Chelsea.

Chelsea was a hard sleeper herself as a baby (and still is). She would go to sleep at 8pm and not wake up until 8am. We hardly ever woke up in the middle of the night with her for any reason (except maybe out of courtesy we might have changed a diaper or two). We were so concerned about her sleeping so much we questioned the doctor. Some babies do extremely well, as Chelsea did. Of course I didn't own a big bad sub back in 1990 either.

Then again, while Angibug was carrying Chelsea we did have BOOM BOOM in the vehicle..... and I was always BOOMING!

Angiebug on the other hand, is like Gordon's youngest, will wake on the slightest drop of a pin.

Burke, I was thinkin' I needed these tools, I mean toys, before I started my Florida room project. This is more like a reward I guess... lol I do like Makita. I have a 15 year old 9.6v Makita drill that has taken some serious abuse. Maybe that's why it's on it's last leg. I've got several other Makita tools as well (table saw, compound miter saw, jigsaw, sander, chain saw, ??? can't think of them all). Very pleased with them.

Congrats Chris.... I am sure you are excited to be done and able to get back home.

Meanwhile, here's "an offer I COULD refuse" that just came in via email. This scam is still just as lame as the last we got SPAMMED with it -- can't beliive they still send out this crap. Even more unbelievable is that some people actually fall for it and send these hucksters their business bank account numbers and other data. ATT----PRESIDENT/CEO

Dear Sir,

RE - REQUEST FOR CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP

I, Mallam Adamu Gega, a director in the Contract Award Department of the
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) have been mandated by two of
my colleagues in the same department to seek for a trustworthy person like
you overseas to stand as a beneficiary to the outstanding contract claim of
twenty one million U.S. dollars (US$21m) only.

The outstanding sum was over-invoiced bill realized from contracts we
awarded to foreign companies some years back from the budgetary allocation
to our corporation. The contract was executed, commissioned and the
contract value paid to the contractor hiding the over-invoiced sum of
US$21m floating in the corporation's code account with the apex bank of
Nigeria, to our knowledge alone as he did over-invoiced the contract value
to our benefit as we almost due for retirement in some years to come.

Because the Nigerian Civil Service laws does not permit us to apply for the
release and receipt of the payment with our names, it became mandatory for
us to look for someone overseas to be part of the business. That is why you
have been contacted after your contact information we secured from our
Chambers of Commerce in Abuja.

We have already agreed to have the fund shared as:-
75% for us here
20% for you
5% will be set aside for the upfront expenses from both side

Be informed that this transaction is 100% free from all sorts of risk as we
had carefully planed ways of its successful end. The business needs
confidentiality throughout the few days it will last for our securities as
we are still in active service with the corporation (NNPC).

If you are interested in this proposal, reply immediately via my private
mailbox or my private telephone number: 999-999-9999999 to inform you of
the needed requirements from you to commence the application for the
release of the fund from the concerned activities here.

Waiting to hear from you urgently.

Hey Ya David ;)

Moring Gang :later:

Cool Picture Burke.. I was going to mention that traffic looked a bit light for a 6 lane freeway. Though we don't see traffic like that in ole Saskabush.

That picture reminds me of the time we were driving on the Santa Ana Freeway in LA. It was around 9:00 PM and we were in the fast lane of the freeway in my rented SuperCharged Pontiac Gran Prix, It was bumper to bumper tail lights 6 lanes wide as far as the eye could see, as well it was a wall of bumper to bumper head lights, 6 lanes wide coming at us while I was cruising at about 130kmh. Christine told me afterward that she almost hurled from all the vertego of the lights and speed in close quarters. Small town folks heh?

Trev, I took the classic avatar down for it takes too long to load for some peeps.

This just in.... Useful Spam??? :E

Subject: Spiders--Please read

An article by Dr. Beverly Clark, in the Journal of the United
Medical Association (JUMA), the mystery behind a recent spate of deaths has been solved. If you haven't already heard about it in the news,
here is what happened.

--Three women in North Florida, turned up at hospitals over a 5-day
period, all with the same symptoms. Fever, chills, and vomiting, followed by muscular collapse, paralysis, and finally, death. There were no outward signs of trauma. Autopsy results showed toxicity in the blood. These women did not know each other, and seemed to have nothing in common. It was discovered, however, that they had all visited the same restaurant (Olive Garden) within days of their deaths. The health department descended on the restaurant, shutting it down. The food, water, and air conditioning were all inspected and tested, to no avail.

The big break came when a waitress at the restaurant was rushed
to the hospital with similar symptoms. She told doctors that she had
been on vacation, and had only went to the restaurant to pick up her
check. She did not eat or drink while she was there, but had used the
restroom. That is when one toxicologist, remembering an article he had
read, drove out to the restaurant, went into the restroom, and lifted
the toilet seat. Under the seat, out of normal view, was a small spider.
The spider was captured and brought back to the lab, where it was
determined to be the Two-Striped Telamonia (Telamonia dimidiata)
so named because of its reddened flesh color. This spider's venom is
extremely toxic, but can take several days to take effect. They live in
cold, dark, damp, climates, and toilet rims provide just the right
atmosphere.

Several days later a lawyer from Jacksonville showed up at a hospital
emergency room. Before his death, he told the doctor, that he had been
away on business, had taken a flight from Indonesia, changing planes in
Singapore,before returning home.

He did not visit (Olive Garden), while there. He did, as did all of the
other victims, have what was determined to be a puncture wound, on his
right buttock. Investigators discovered that the flight he was on had
originated in India.

The Civilian Aeronautics Board (CAB) ordered an immediate inspection the toilets of all flights from India, and discovered the Two-Striped
Telamonia (Telamonia dimidiata) spider's nests on 4 different planes!

It is now believed that these spiders can be anywhere in the country.
So please, before you use a public toilet, lift the seat to check for spiders. It can save your life! And please pass this on to everyone you care about.

Good Morning fella's!

Thanks on the tools.... I'm sure I'll enjoy using them.

Burke, you guys have 10 lane highways in Texas..... wow! We are lucky to see 4 lanes here in BAMA. lol Interesting flip pics anyway.

Kevin, you mean it isn't Spring time where you are. I thought Spring was the same for everyone.... like March 21st or there abouts. Call your weatherman and tell him you want Spring. lol

Yes! DST year round would be absolutely lovely! I haven't heard of a good reason for changing it in the first place. Someone told me it's so the school kids won't have to get on the bus during dark. Heck, I see buses dropping kids off in the dark during the winter. What gives?

Scary spider story.... now for a true one. Lady friend visited us and went to use our toilet and we heard a loud scream. Ran to find out what was going on and sure enough a huge spider was on the toilet seat. She stated when she lifted up the cover lid the spider was sitting on the seat. What a wicked looking spider it was. Needless to say we flushed it down the toilet. Funny thing is that Chelsea wouldn't use that toilet for several weeks thinking the spider was gonna come out of the toilet and bite her.

I don't like spiders and snakes. It's about snake charming time at the pond. Wonder how many I can destroy this Spring? hee hee

...you guys have 10 lane highways in Texas..... wow!

Sonnie -- one of our freeways, a congested stretch of I-10 dubbed the "Katy Freeway" (since it goes from Houson west through Katy, Texas), is going to be widened to FOURTEEN (14) lanes over the next few years (plus six feeder road lanes). Citizens groups are trying to get the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to modify its plans to place most of the freeway below grade and incorporate provision for a light rail commuter line and green space into the plan. (The plan already includes toll lanes which is supposed to expedite express traffic while helping to finance the project.) Other critics of the plan say even 14 lanes aren't enough! We'll see how this works out.

Awwww comeon guys...spiders get such a bad rap.

Here's Canada's BIGGEST BADDEST spider....we call it the dock spider ('cuz that's where it's usually found). It's aka the fishing spider (Dolomedes sp:tenebrosus). We get these at the cottage every year. Can grow up to 3 inches in length and here it is affectionately feeding on a minnow:

http://animalpicturesarchive.com/animal/PREVIEW/FishingSpider_J01-Hunted_a_fish-s160.jpg

these spiders can skim acoss water and are a jumping spider...if they were poisonous they could probably take the tarantula or the wolf spider...they're aggressive (when provoked...usually they're pretty harmless) and scare the hell out of you when lying on the dock and it's looking down on you...

here's a better look:
http://www.marion.ohio-state.edu/spiderweb/SpiderPictures/Pisauridae/Dolomedes%20tenebrosus.jpg

personally I think they're rather cool 8)

Well Silver Dragon will not start windows for some reason. This morning as I was posting on here I tried to run some app by clicking on the task bar. It did not launch and basically seemed like a dead task bar.

Eventually some error message came up saying it was not a vvalid blah, blah, blah 32$#%&* app, or something like that. I clciked on the app again and then after some time it stated the application cannot be found or has been moved.. I looked at the drive it was on and it was not there in File explorer. Which is weird for the other partion of the drive was there. It's the Western Digital drive that has 2 partions, yet only one was visiable.

I decided to restart the system and it held the splash screen forever which was strange, for usually this is faster than a blink of an eye. Anyway WinXP started it's load screen and just when it get to the point where the Welcome screen comes up, the PC just sits there with a blank screen.. Nothing... Monitors show it's still getting a signal, but the screens are black.

So I reboot and go into the bios to have a quick look, the Primary IDE channels are not showing the drives... I check all the cables to make sure they are tight, and as I'm adjusting, all the drives (I think) start making some kind of clunking sound.. I let the system run the boot coarse and leave for work.. I tell Christine if the welcome screen does not comeup after 1.2 hour shut it down... Well she shut it down.

So I'll be looking into that tonight. It seems somthing is hanging the start of windows and it may be the drives on the IDE channel 1. The OS is loaded on the RAID array and it seems it wants to boot, start and run, but something is tripping it up just after windows loads.

I'll have to try Safe mode tonight.

Guess I may be installing that new Mobo and CPU sooner than I thought :(

I'd try popping and reseating the RAM, a lot of times hanging apps or "invalid Win32 application" errors are caused by RAM problems. After that, it's probably the hard drives or IDE channel(s). Lastly, check to see that the CPU and HSF are seated properly.

Or just get a new Dell! :-y

That's what you get for moving out to the 'burbs next to a wild life refuge, when you could have spent the same gazillion bucks and moved into the "wild life refuge" that is West U -- right across the freeway from the Summit. :>) (Of course you would have been moving into a SMALLER house instead of a larger one from what you had before.) Then we could have "conservative" avatars in the rest of the forum and wild ones in TTP, or I could have speakers in Audio Hideout, a TV in Home Theater, a projector in Front Projection, an Outlaw in Club Rotel  :smackbutt: hey hey I was just kidding :bash: ;)

Bing, hopefully it was just a loose power connector. At work I have a Dell Abacus, or at least it seems that way when it takes 5 minutes to boot up. :Z

Nice cabinet Eduardo. You should post your "other" avatar here so Greg can see it. :boobies:

David, the stabilizers in camcorders are digital, they don't wobble. My Sony has the Steadyshot feature and it works well.

Oh well, time to pretend to work for a while... later folks, KJP

My post about the avatars has nothing to do with lauren just looking at the guide site as a whole and not just the TTP. If you want to post girlie picks (please do!) lets just keep them in the TTP and not in the other forums...and since Avatars are global across all forums I think we should keep those fairly clean. Yes this is a male dominated hobby but that doesn't mean we can't at least try to attract a few ladies now and then ;)

Problem is these africans don't do well with plants so I may have to rethink how I was going to set up these two tanks. Ideally I'd sell the Hex and get a nice large square tank for the africans or move the hex to the nursery and get a larger tank for the livingroom. What have you got in your tank Jeff?

Gordon,

For a standard Oracle RDBMS v8.1 the value for SESSIONS or LICENSE_MAX_SESSIONS is generally:

1.1 x (Number Of Processes) + 5

For multi-threaded it's generally:

1.1 x (Number Of Connections)

Your high-water will depend a lot on the type of instance. If you want to check your parameters, they're in the V$LICENSE view. Use this SQL to check:

SELECT
sessions_max s_max,
sessions_warning s_warning,
sessions_current s_current,
sessions_highwater s_high,
users_max
FROM
v$license;

If you don't have an instance up and running yet, I'd go with AT LEAST 33-50% as a high-water mark. More would be safer, but you don't want to over-spec your through-put.

SARS Carriers?

Health authorities in Hong Kong are speculating that common household cockroaches carried the SARS virus around an apartment complex where a large number of people contracted the disease apparantly without being in direct contact with any other person who already had it. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,3-639590,00.html Maybe it's time to go to Home Depot and get some heavy duty bug spray before that happens around here! Cool David ...thanks I guessing x is max sessions.

That value from v$license will be rather dynamic as users and processes initiate more sessions. Would parallel executions (processes or queries) create more sessions and affect that number?

Would parallel executions (processes or queries) create more sessions and affect that number

If you have parallelling enabled it won't create more sessions, but it will create more processes which would impact your max sessions in a multi-threaded environment. You can limit the number of parallel processes on a statement at the statement level by using the PARALLEL parameter. If you want to set a limit of 4 parallel processes on a specific table use:

ALTER TABLE employee PARALLEL 4;

If you want to set a value for parallel operations per cpu, use the following variable:

PARALLEL_THREADS_PER_CPU

Lowly developer here...you know....strange logic pretty screens....wishes the database ran on it's own with no intervention....

So I took another look at what you wrote...

So when I connect ... 1 session will open 1 process. But say my query is parallel it will create more than 1 process which you can limit. Correct?

any app created will open a session and, because it's running, creates an os process.

So how do several processes affect the max_session value?

So when I connect ... 1 session will open 1 process. But say my query is parallel it will create more than 1 process which you can limit. Correct?
Yep. Again, as long as parallelism is enabled. If it's not, you get one process per session that executes sequentially.

any app created will open a session and, because it's running, creates an os process.
Yep.

So how do several processes affect the max_session value?
They won't affect the session count - past the initial one created at login - as long as the sub-processes themselves don't initiate another login. But that's easy to check - just see if it calls SQL.

One question: You aren't running multi-threaded are you?

Multi-threaded....no

Now that our client was going to quad I have to wander over and reload oracle. Most of the install is default with some minor tweaks to max open cursors ..sort_area_size things like that....course I was reading an interesting article on tweaking the SGA to optimize allocated memory...it was something to the effect of:

system RAM - PGA (for x users) - RAM(20% windows reserved) = max SGA to avoid swapping.

User = sessions but I also know that each user can fire up sqlplus, forms, etc...creating additional sessions.

The "Who's online" is not an accurate indicator of who's actually online, because you don't have to log in to post using your cookie settings.

I think this is more a detriment to getting new people to sign up when they say, oh, there's only 3-4 people online, or only Guest, and don't join because they don't think anyone is around.

Please hunt for a solution for you to automatically be logged in as soon as your cookie is used, and you stay logged in until you don't post for 15 minutes or 30 minutes... ok?

Agree guys? It is my opinion that this feature needs to go away if we can't make it work like that. Either that, or we require you to log in before you post.

Perhaps the online list should include anyone who's browsed recently with a logged-in cookie, or anyone who's posted with or without a cookie within the past (X) minutes. Then it would be an "accurate" indication of who's online.

Not everybody necessarily wants to stay "logged in", say if they're on a PC that more than one person can access.

FYI Dell has a $100 off again on their notebooks...I managed to configure a base 8500 for under $2200...damn I'd have bought that instead of my 5100 if I could have gotten that price when I ordered it

Andrew - my tank is 25 gallons. How much do you think a larger tank would be from PetTraders? I was thinking something like 40? I'd really like to sell my 25 and get a slightly larger one and begin work on a tetra tank...but of course I've got to watch my $$$ with everything I've been buying these days!! :)

Andrew, ya know ya shouldn't do that to yourself.... Besides it would have been stripped down, hardly worth owning ;)

I got $300 off, free shipping and a free 64MB USB Memory Key... BFD! Whoop-dee-doo! They still screw ya over if ya want the good stuff :bash: It's a conspiracy I tell ya ;)

I picked up another 256MB of memory from Crucial for $52.99 US. Much better than the $200 Dell was wanting.

I'm looking for a notebook backpack to carry it around in. So far I have narrowed it down to a few...

Jansport Lap Station

Both bags have a padded pocket for the laptop. I'm leaning towards the Patagonia for I like their equipment, and my friends own an outdoor store that handles Pat.

I'm getting the Dell nylon bag, but I need something that going to carry lots of stuff for medium distances.

Actually no Mats, that's still not acceptable. If it doesn't show all members posting, it doesn't work for me. 1 member and lots of visitors still has a bad appearance from a MEMBERSHIP perspective.

It's important that the thing be able to represent the true nature of how many members are logged in in addition to guests. Showing us as Guests doesn't work. I repeat, it doensn't work.

Plenty of forums do it on the basis of your posting, that's what it needs to be able to do.

Bottom line though! We need to have lots of Babes here!
We don't want to loose George. Right!!

Burke!!Awesome Flip graphic!! :^x

Bing!!Did you get your Laptop yet?

Jeff, The bigger the tank the better!
Several reasons,,your fish will have more room to swim, therefore growing healthier and larger. Plus a larger tank is less suseptable to clouding and becoming contaminated with bacteria and such.
Just easier to maintain overall.

No monitor yet.
Not sure again as to what I want.
Bing's right ,,the 17" is too small.
Now I am leaning towards CRT..The Sony .22 model
Not sure though :?

impressive for such a small unit.

And you thought your Sony was cool?? it can be used as an organizer, day planner, MP3 player (not sure on the Dell ver), Hightech calculator, conversion machine, memo pad.... It's endless! You coulc keep a data base of prices in that thing :wedgie:

They hand the Compaq version out to my department for we have to support those and the wireless web/LAN access around the U of S campus.

Well Trev, you know my thoughts, "LCD is suck". If I was to own a no holds barred monitor it would be the Sony GDM F520 .22 Pitch CRT. That said, I'm perfectly happy with my 21" Sony .24 pitch and would say it offers better value over the GDM 520 at almost half the price. I wouldn't trade it for any LCD to date.

I just want you to buy what you want, not what I would want. I agree though, any monitor should be bought locally if at all possible. That way you get to inspect it and it's not such a hassle to return, exchange it if your not happy with it.

When looking at the LCD monitor, make sure it is displaying at it's native resolution (as Kevin said) as well make sure Clear Type Fonts is enabled. That was designed to take away the Lego block look of the text. As a side, note what type of PC / Graphics card is driving the display.

When I was at Future Shop looking at the laptops, none of them had clear type fonts enabled. I turn them all on as I was playing. They should give me some gift certificate or coupon for helping make their laptops look better.

Yeap, you can use the Dell PDA as a remote too... Ipaq Remote (http://www.remotecentral.com/wn020111.htm)

http://www.remotecentral.com/wn000079.jpg http://www.remotecentral.com/wn000080.jpg

I was in the Sony Store and all those sales men there use Sony Clie PDA's for remotes to control all the devices in store.. Pretty cool if you ask me. It probably does not replace the Pronto, but it's just handy in that environment.

LOL Bing...everytime I got to Futile shop, the displays for the laptops and the desktop LCDs are always set to the wrong resolution. I wonder how they sell those things!! So I always go and set every single one up properly. I'm probably making a few sales for them! :)

Trev....you missed the most important part of a big tank - ITS COOL!!!! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

I'll have to see how much its gonna cost...gotta watch my pennies with all the stuff I want these days!!

Well, I'm a total LCD convert. I figure LCDs are essential for people who don't need the colour purity of CRTs. I hated every CRT I ever had - poor convergence, poor focus, poor geometry...the list goes on and on. Then again, these were cheapie monitors, not Sony flagships!! :)

Would your model be a giant leap over what I currently have.
Thing is too,,there actually is nothing wrong with my monitor,,
Except at the higher resolution it is a little blurry and I feell, over the years the colors may not be as vibrant as they used to be. It is about 6 years old..I could move it to Tori's room.

Cool on the TV control..The dell Axim is for me,,

I personally found pocket windows, or whatever version they call it now, awkward, and difficult to use for sometimes, the simplest tasks. In my mind for true PDA functionality, Palm is much more straight forward, and better...

I kept a Compaq IPAQ for about a week, and returned it. I now have a Sony Clie' with color screen/mpeg capability/remote functionality.

Trev - I'd vote for the Dell. I'm not a huge fan of the Palms or the Clies. I like PocketPCs more - their similarity to the PC is useful I think - easy transition from one to the other and I think sharing data between them is easier too.

Lex

Sorry Jeff, disagree completely. I never fully got the PC interface software functioning as advertised with the IPAQ, though I can't recall particulars at this point, and as a Sr. Programmer/Analyst, it shouldn't be that difficult. :) Palm software is easy, straightforward, and consistently works across the board.

I like the Palms because I mainly use it as an address book and organizer. I like the graphitti writting style of the palms and I'm not convinced that the hand writing recongnition of the Pocket PC's is up to snuff. But if you want to surf wirelessly, then the pocket PC is the wat to go. Palm is not yet fully supported.

If I was to get a Pocket PC , this is the one i would consider for it's features. Built in Wireless, bluetooth....

http://www.hp.ca/products/images/264493-001.jpg

http://www.hp.ca/products/static/264493-001/features.php

Trev, I have not seen your monitor in full action, however I can safely say it is much better (sorry) It's flat screen, finer pitch and maximum resolution of 2048x1536, really is leaps over the older Sony's. Your welcome to come over and have a look.

If you bought the GDM F520, you would rest easy knowing you have the best monitor money can buy... Do it now!

Jeff, Futile shop should send us some free Swagg!

Also well said Bing. Your right, for cool factor, and things like surfing, the pocket PC is the way to go. But for grind it out business functionality, Palm's been doing this longer than anyone. But remember, you have to have a service, and pay for that web time, and that part may not be cheap, and for someone like myself that spends most their time at one or the other PC locations, it's really just not that necesary. Now, Bluetooth makes it so the cell phone can interface, and you use the cell's time and web client capability, right Bing? Again, you got to pay for the cell time, and the cell dialup capability.

Howdy gents!

Worked on the Florida room again yesterday.... almost finished. All I lack is a little caulking and then comes the painting. ECKKK! I hate painting.

David, sounds like you might be in for a treat when they start work on that 14 lane interstate highway. You might need to find an alternate route.

Eduardo, nice cabinet you built yourself. My dad and I built our coffee table and end tables out of laminated oak pieces we purchased from a trucking company. They are used for the flooring in trailors for tractor trailer rigs. This stuff is 1¼" thick and made of solid oak strips laminated together making the sections about foot wide. We further glued them together making them coffee and end table width. We've had them now for about 18 years. I've replaced the coffee table with a large round one now and use the old coffee table for an end table.

I love working with wood. Most of my cabintry work now is using birch and painting since all of our trim is painted now.

I also like Porter-Cable tools... we have a Porter-Cable air nail gun and I'm about to buy another Porter-Cable air nail gun.

You guys have a great day! Back to work for me.

Lex

Lex, depending on what is available and what standards are in use. If Trev was to get the HP Pocket PC, it is 802.11b compliant out of the box and he could access his network / web at home. The other option is to subscribe to a service in your local area. I believe Sasktel is setting up the infrastructure for this around town. To use in on the U of S campus we need to have Cisco compliant cards.

Blue tooth enabled allows you to connect/communicate to your PC, if also equipped with a blutooth card just buy bringing it with in proximity (typically 30 -50 feet). The Hewlett Packard is one sweet Pocket PC.

But I like the Sony PEGNZ90 and the PEGNX70V models myself if i was to replace my trusty HandSpring...

Thats a sweet Sony you have Lex, I bought the monochrome version for Christine. It's high resolution display was actually more desireable than the color M505. At the time it was one of the first high resolution PDA's. She absolutely loves it.

Ordered some glasses this afternoon from Sears. They had a 50% off frames so it brought the price down from ungodly to unbareable:) Anyway they're the titanium frames so I'm sure they'll have Bing's approval  I've worn perscription sunglasses for years since I was getting nasty headaches while driving but I kept putting off getting regular specs until now. I'm finding seeing the text in power point presentations at work hard to read and so its time to at least have a pair on hand for those occasions...even if I don't wear them all the time. I really only need them for seeing past 10 feet and even then its not to bad unless I'm trying to read small text etc. I'll maybe post a pic of me wearing them when they come in in a few weeks.

I'm currently BBQing some burgers while surfing from the patio....very cool :yesnod:

Looting is a problem, but let's not forget, our guys are still in harms way, evidenced by yesterday's events. Lost one Marine, 4 injured by a suicide bomber and who knows what else may have happened. It was a pleasure to see a lot of their soldiers put down their guns and start walking home yesterday from the northern front. Now if Kirkut will go as quickly.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply looting takes precedence over the safety of the US troops...

I'm just alarmed at how much looting is taking place, and I don't think it's the US's job to police that, the Iraqis have to make their own choices now that they are free to express themselfs. I guess looting is only natural when it was built on the backs of the Iraq people.

I know we had silenced the war talk for a while. But sometimes it's difficult to live in a vaccum. So...

I know you didn't mean to imply that Bing. :) Actually, the coalition does have some responsibility for policing, IMO. When you take away law enforcement (no matter how cruel they are), something has to be put in it's place by the powers to be, and the coalition is that power now.

[editorial on]
But then you can't really blame these people. They've been silenced for so long by threat of retribution, kept to a life of total impoverishment by the regime. So that the wealth of a country, became the wealth of the few. They are in a sense, taking back some of what is rightfully theirs. But lines must be drawn. Taking equipment and supplies from a hospital is well over that line. Taking from the residences of the dictator's regime? I was glad to see them take everything that wasn't nailed down, and then some.

The war and loss of innocent life as a result of it is very sad. But the loss of a nation's populations identity for 30 some odd years, is in some ways, even sadder. During that period of time, it's reported that well over 833 times the number of people died at the hands of an evil regime, (by my calculation) vs. the number of civilians that have died in this war so far. That is, the greatest atrocity of all. Of course, the value of the Coalition loss of life, is indeed very costly and sad. Let's not forget these brave Men and Women, ever.[editorial off]
