Well, the kitty is blond, but would probably do better at horseback riding than this Quintessential blonde -
A blonde decides to try horseback riding, even though she has had no lessons or prior experience. She mounts the horse, unassisted, and the horse immediately springs into motion. It gallops along at a steady and rhythmic pace, but the blonde begins to slip from the saddle. In terror, she grabs for the horse's mane, but cannot seem to get a firm grip. She tries to throw her arms around the horse's neck, but she slides down the side of the horse anyway.
The horse gallops along, seemingly impervious to its slipping rider. Finally, giving up her frail grip, the blonde attempts to leap away from the horse and throw herself to safety. Unfortunately, her foot has become entangled in the stirrup, she is now at the mercy of the horse's pounding hooves as her head is struck against the ground over and over. As her head is battered against the ground, she is mere moments away from unconsciousness when to her great fortune........

Getting to page 51 puts us half way through the 100 flips for TTP IX. Not that anyone is counting (not "anyone", just "everyone") :>) here are some "unofficial" stats with a couple of footnotes:
( 3 ) Andrew Pratt
( 2 ) Bing Fung
( 7 ) Burke Strickland
( 6 ) Chris Dotur
( 6 ) David Meek
( 1 ) Eduardo
( 1 ) Efarstad
( 6 ) Kevin Patz
( 4 ) Lex
( 3 ) Mats
( 2 ) Pat
( 1 ) Paul Wu
( 2 ) Sonnie Parker
( 4 ) Trevor Schell
( 2 ) X - Not Counted
( 50 ) Total Flips
Footnote 1 - If the "powers that be" officially suspend the rule against "three in a row", then David Meek has 7 flips to his credit rather than 6.
Footnote 2 - If the same officials grant an exception to the "run from 33" rule for a flip to page 32 (you had to be there), :>) then Trevor has 5 flips rather than 4.
As it is, the race for highest number of flips is rather close with four of us having 6 or 7 flips and a couple more are hanging in there with 4 or 5. Unless someone really runs off with it during the next half, we could easily end up with a multiple tie at the end. Speaking of running off with it, Lex only needs to get 46 more to get his stated goal of 50 flips for this edition, which means he'll have to ace out the rest of us on all but four of the remaining flips... stay tuned. :>)

Hi y'all. Happy Thursday!
Chris, it's impressive that the instructor thought that was the best re-fueling he'd ever seen! You go, boy! :T Sorry to hear you're stuck in OK for another thrilling weekend - yawn. :tired: Have I mentioned lately that I love your 3000? Did you do all the wrench-work on it?
Trevor, that's a slick lil' laptop fella. My Dell 840 feels like it weighs a couple of hundred pounds - at least.
Burke, nice kitten. Gonna play hell with the nice soft grills on the Maggies! :B

Good Morning Everyone. It's been a great couple of day. :sn
I finally got my cabinet built. I have to admit for my first piece of furniture it looks really good. The last coat of stain went on about 12:00 AM. The poly goes on this afternoon. :D
The reason I had to work so late was because I went to dinner with Allison's family. Her brother and sister-in-law gave us a thank you card for letting them stay with us. Inside the card was a print out for 2 tickets to go see ...............

Ok, now for my feeble attempt to catch up on all the posts from last night on...
Lex - I agree with your sentiment on all this political correctness crap. The only way you can avoid offending anyone is to not say anything at all (and then your silence will probably STILL offend someone). I posted the flag pic because it's a pretty picture of a symbol (the flag) that has a lot of meaning to Americans in these days of war and terrorism and stuff. It wasn't intended to be a religious statement (heck I didn't even make that connection until I read Burke's post and then looked at the picture again). Ok, I hate political correctness crap, let's have some fun! :party:Kevin,,Time to change that Avatar,,pretty dull and boring.. :smackbutt:Well, maybe I'm dull and boring, or don't have time to hunt down avatars. BTW, your Pepsi avatar exceeds the size guidelines doesn't it?
Chris, you pilot you. Have you ever flown fighter jets? Those look like more fun than those big transports. :)
Pr@, you've been keeping busy! You're going to have your hands full soon too! I got your email, I'll respond today when I have a few free seconds.
Should be good ..The older you get , the more you appreciate the female species...I certainly appreciate my wife more and more the older I get! :smootch:
Burke, send some of that warm air up here! It's been in the 30s and rainy all week. xx) It was pushing 60 in late March, now April's crummy. Can't wait to see your flip pic when I get home tonight. Ditto for other recently posted pics, I can read the comments, but I can't safely view them.
Wow, I'm ahead of Lex AND Trev on flips! I'm hoping to hit 10 this time around.

Check out my new Avatar! I created it myself using Paint Shop Pro and JASC Animation Shop. Not too bad for a first attempt.
It seems apt at the moment as I'm watching many IPs pound my firewall on port 445 (Win2K file sharing). I've always seen lots of scans on this port but now I'm getting several per minute. I think a new worm was just unleashed within the past hour, I'll be keeping an eye out for any reports... 8O

Boys names
Eric Andrew Pratt
Nolan Andrew Pratt
Colin Andrew Pratt
Jordan Andrew Pratt
Girls names
Haley Ann Pratt
Haley Sarah Pratt
Lauren Ann Pratt
Lauren Sarah Pratt
Reese Ann Pratt
Resse Sarah Pratt
Jessica Ann Pratt
Jessica Sarah Pratt
As you can see we're pretty firm on the boys middle name but the girls will be either Ann or Sarah...cast your vote now before its too late ;)

Andrew: I may be "a whee tad bias" but I like Eric. Cause the other names would spell out NAP, CAP, or JAP...but EAP doesn't have a double meaning and is therefore more unique and cooler! ;) 8)
As for the girl names I vote for Lauren Ann Pratt...very classy! :yesnod:
If our little one is a girl she'll be Elizabeth Eva Farstad but if Andrew gets a brother...oh, man...I have no idea...we better just have a girl then. ;) :D

Hey Pr@...haven't you opened up the Baby Pool thread yet for Height, Weight and Day of Birth yet!
Names...who cares what I think...personally, any of those names will work...they're all pretty nice...what do you guys like?....I'm assuming the names are in order of preference?
My wife and I didn't have our first figured out until the following day.
Sometimes it takes time (our first)...sometimes it hits you the minute they're born (our 2nd)....I don't know how...but you just know.
Personally I wouldn't wrap up on the names until you SEE your baby...I can't explain it because the books would say otherwise....but babies have oodles of personality when they're born...you will develop a sense about this that defies explanation....don't know how to say it better than that...it's kinda cool really.
The hospital won't let you leave until you name the baby just so you know...Honestly, we didn't know that the first time around

No they aren't in any particular order...they're just a list of the ones we're thinking of using.
You're right the hospital won't let you leave without a name but you can change it without much difficulty or cost within 30 days if need be.

A guy here at work has a pretty cool name, i think. "Slade" you don't hear it often, but not sure how well it goes with Pratt. I like Lauren Ann for the girl. Lauren's gonna be a little fox, and Daddy's gonna have to beat boys away from the front door with a hockey stick.

Chris...
I was going to put it more bluntly...like "the Hospital treats the father as a sperm donor only" :P
But your way has more class ;)
Actually I'm not being 100% fair...my 2nd didn't require any chemical intervention so we qualified for the nicer birthing rooms where you get a private room for starters...a fridge, tv, cd player, phone and a bed for Dad to sleep. It was WAY more relaxed and natural (without being at home). Hospitals are getting much better.
However, because my wife opt'ed for an epidural the first go round we were in the more traditional hospital setting...monitors...small room, shared room for recovery....many intrusions...very unnerving...possibly unecessarily so.
I slept on the floor....I was soooo sick that night (Terrible cold) and nobody carred...it was kinda funny actually...I was terrified of the nurses, because of the ward we were in, they definately didn't want to hear about my problems.
Once you've experienced the natural birthing rooms it's like staying at the Hilton versus motel 8.

Here's the kind of "babies" we should all have. They're much less work, you can leave them home alone, their waste material doesn't rival that of a nuclear power plant, they're quieter and they won't wreck your car when they turn 16, they don't contribute to overpopulation, and best of all your wife doesn't have to practically destroy herself to produce them! :##

Gordon yes we have a mid wife and a doula so the odds are on our side as far as getting one of the low risk rooms since they won't have to staff it which I understand is a growing concern for our hospitals.
We are going to try for a home birth though so we'll see how that goes...we're prepared to move to HSC though if something comes up.

Wouldn't the Grace be a little closer...or is HSC where the doc practises
The Grace doesn't deliver any more...your only choices in WPG are HSC, St.B, and the Vic (though the Vic can't do high risk and often transfers to HSC or ST.B anyway)
A doula is a professional birth attendant who's role during the birth is to provide as much care as possible...think of them as a nurse that's dedicated to the mother not the doctor and won't leave to go and check on other patients. Right now they aren't covered by medicare but they're worth the cost. Basically with a doula you lower the risk of c-sections and other medical interventions by quite a bit....
25% more likely to have a shorter labour
30% less likely to use pain medication
60% less likely to want an epidural
50% less likely to have a Cesarean birth
40% less likely to have a forceps delivery
Source: Mothering The Mother, Klaus, Kennel, and Klaus, 1993.

Yup, I tell ya...goin' to Andrew's always seems to cost me money. His Dell laptop is sweet. Right now the noise and size of my computer are really bugging me. I've got way too much power for what I do - I hardly get a chance to play games as it is. Otherwise its just surfing and whatnot. The ability to browse the net from anywhere in the house is really cool.
So, found a buyer for my PC, now it's time to settle on a laptop. I'm debating between the Dell 5100 and the 8500. The 8500 has got the better video setup, but I'm concerned about the widescreen display. Cool I guess, but will games support it? As you know, if you don't run an LCD at its native res. it looks crappy. I'll be big-time pissed if I get that and none of my games run in that res.
If anyone else has any comments to make on laptop options feel free. So far I've narrowed in on the Dell's because of value. The Sony's seem expensive for the technology they offer. Don't care for the style of the Toshiba's too much.
Oh, and I was also impressed with that little sub Andrew built. I raved about the finish, even though he didn't like it. I think it looks really cool - unlike any sub I've ever seen! :T
Ciao guys.

Jeff, even thought the widescreen Dell at WSXGA+ is 1680x1050, if a game does not support widescreen, it will be displayed at 1400x1050 Regular SXGA+ resolutions, no biggie, or 1024x768 if you so desire with scaling.
If you get the WSXGA it's native resolution is 1680x1050, so I would be more concerned with it having to scale to 1024x768 if that's where you choose to run rather than 1400x1050. There will be no scalling required at 1400x1050 and It will just be centered in the screen, just like I showed you on my 3200x1200 resolution of my desKtop.
Here it is again :)

Hi Guys!!
What's the best contrast Ratio for a LCD screen or at least the minimum you would invest in.
Also what is the minimum level of brightness CD/m2 that one should consider. Does it vary due to the size of the screen as to what should or would be acceptable.?
Thanks,

Trev try to get at a minimum 300:1 contrast ratio and 250 cd/m2. Some of of the better LCD moitors like the Princeton 981 I showed you have a contrast ratio of 600:1, and a brightness of 250cd/m2. Thats all you really need.
What I would tend to stress over more is the actual pixel pitch and the response time of the LCD. 25ms is a good response time to minimize ghosting of the LCD while scrolling. The finer the pixel pitch, the less screen door effect, just like a CRT :wedgie:

Thanks for the tips Bing. As long as I can play the games without scaling, then I'll be ok. I suppose the image will be a bit smaller, but I guess I can live with that. :?
Ultimately I'd rather take the 5100 I think, but I don't think the video card would suffice for what I want to do with it - ie. play Morrowind. ;) I'm not totally enthralled with the reviews the 8500 is getting on the Dell forums...though sometimes I wonder if it isn't just nit-picking by the diehards. It took me awhile before I knew what 'two spindles' meant anyway. :)
I'd probably go for the mid-resolution screen. I think the top one would be too small for me.
Ciao guys.

Morning gang. We made it to Friday!!!!
Did you hear the "rest of the story" about Miss Lynch? You know, the POW they rescued from the hospital? I haven't read this, just heard from people at work that it was in the Houston Chronicle. Evidently, she put up quite a fight. Everyone else around her dead or incapacitated and she kept fighting. Got shot and she kept fighting. Went hand to hand, got stabbed and kept fighting. Wow, now you want to talk about heart and spirit. . . . All that from a slight little 19-year-old no bigger than my daughter. And then, to top it all off, evidently the tip the military received came from a doctor in the hospital.
Got the turntable, cartridge, Svelte Shelf and Nitty Gritty album cleaner in! Just call me analog man. Oh, in a spastic moment, I ordered a Musical Fidelity phono stage too. Help. :sos:

Bing, the widescreen laptop looks cool, but I would think the wide screen would result in more scrolling of web pages and such.
Kevin, actually less scrolling because it's at a higher resolution than most standard laptops. 1050 or 1200 vertical pixels versus 768 of most laptops. As well you can place 2 pages side by side or have a a lot more horizontial cells in spreadsheets. It's all good 8)

Kevin that makes absolutly no sense what's so ever...basically because a company made some questionable products YEARS ago and you haven't any experience with newer models you're discounting them all together? We've been an IBM shop since day one here with the exception of two years ago when for one fiscal year we switched to dell...we're now back with IBM and life is good again. Most of the Dells have been alright but we're starting to see issues with two year old machines that we've never seen on the IBMs. My brand new dell laptop needed a reinstall of the OS and I've fought with getting the network running properly. The VPN software that's worked on every other machine its been installed on caused my Dell to lock up...we had to download the latest version to get it working on my machine meanwhile we just installed the older version on very similar spec'd IBM notebooks without issue...all I'm saying is Dell isn't the be all and end all of the PC world. I quite like my laptop now that I've worked though some of the "features" but I'm not kidding myself that I doubt I'd have had these problems with an IBM notebook and had I had trevors wallet when I ordered my machine it would have been a T series IBM not a Dell.

Ok so Thinkpads are great. But since I'm not making Trevor sized paychecks I guess I'll stick with my Dell (which has been a great laptop). But I'll still stick to my assertion that Compaq is crap. :bash:

Eduardo:
Given everything I've heard and read, my first choice should be an IBM. Unfortunately they are just too darned expensive. I know from personal experience that that is no excuse - you ALWAYS get what you pay for, and I'm sure the IBM's are worth the extra $$$. I just don't have it. :(
For reliability, I'd choose IBM. For style, I'd choose Sony. But for value, I guess its Dell. Who knows, I could be making a huge mistake!! I really wish we had a Dell kiosk here so I could see these things in person.
I had two IBM PCs - actually they were my first PCs. First one was a PS/1. No major complaints...I knew very little about PCs back then. Next up was an Aptiva. That's when I grew to HATE the proprietary nature of those IBM systems. Trying to upgrade was a nightmare, because nothing was standard. And getting Windows 95 to run on that thing was almost impossible. Grrrr... But, that was a long time ago, and the consensus seems to be IBM is tops for laptops. :)
The most important thing is that I can swipe the OS that comes installed and install my own clean install. If I can do that, I'm happy! :)
Ciao guys.
PS
Yeah Trev - what's up with no laptop for you? You'd better be cooking something up in that mind of your's!!!! :)
That's why I would never buy a big name desktop now, well, unless it was an apple, not many DIY apples out there. ;)
I had an Aptiva, and a Sony compact Vio desktop PC, what a POS.
But with laptops, we are stuck with the majors and proprietary crap, not much you can do.
Jeff, I'd say you hit the nail on the head on the quality, style, and best value. Looking back, wish I had compared with a Dell, but I got 1 year free financing on the little Sony laptop, so that was attractive.

Andrew:
Trev bought a 1.2 Ghz???? What?!?! Even though he created it, doesn't that banish him from TTP??? ;)
Guys, 1.2 gHz is sufficient power for surfing, and like Trevor, I bought mine based on weight, durable metal skin, and just for surfing really. there really won't be a huge difference in surfing with 1.2 or 1.9, when the net connection is the true bottleneck. If I'm sitting on the couch waisting time on computer, I'm not as concerned about high processing power. :)
but a heavy laptop in my lap would be a concern. The weight can bear heaviliy on the legs not to mention more heat of larger chips, that generate more heat.

Even when I was using my "laptop" computer (instead of a floor-standing "desktop" computer) :>) sitting in my recliner instead of at a desk, I had an external keyboard hooked up -- a much lighter on the legs and a LOT less heat. :>)

Lex:
You're absolutely right..1.2 is too much just for surfing. I'm just so used to seeing Trev buy top of the line! :)
Just went out to a few shops to see some laptops in person. First stop was The Sony Store. Actually, in person I was very disappointed by them. Looked at the GRZ series. In terms of cosmetics - I think they look better in pictures. Not as exciting when you see it in front of you. The keyboard was a disappointment. I found it very squishy, and all the keys moved down whenever you pressed the others. Didn't like it. The star of the Sony was the screen though - very nice, colourful, and bright. But not as good as I thought it might be.
Next up was Futile Shop. I was surprisingly NOT harassed by the sales people. Checked out the Toshibas...meh, not my cup of tea, though I'm sure they are nice. Saw another Sony which I didn't like and kept BSOD'ing. Did see Trev's Sony - very sweet. Ultimately too small for me, but a slick looking piece - definitely better looking than the others.
The one that really caught my eye was a Gateway. It was a Centrino model. Very nice looking laptop, I liked the cosmetics and the build quality. The screen was also excellent - running at 1400x1050, whatever that it. With ClearType turned on I was quite impressed. Anyone know more about these? Are there more than this one model available in Canada? I have to admit it turned my head.
Also saw an Acer at Advance, as well as some iBooks - pass. :)
Gordo, you mean I am supposed to wear underwear? Maybe that's what it was warm on. come to think of it, it was kind of nice.
Jeff, buy what feels right on your private parts, that's as good of advice as I can give, lol. Seriously, I didn't look at every model out there, but I knew I didn't want an HP or a Compaq, of course, now compaq is HP. I mostly wanted compact, and the Sony is the best of the best ultra compacts I think. So, that's what I got.

Jeff!,,
Lex and I are mini Sony Laptop computer buddies.. :P
I bought this puppy for the sole purpose of surfing the net wireless , whether it be from downstairs , the living room, the gargage or outside on the deck.
Nothing else will be loaded onto it to bog it down.
It's sleek and lightweight .Connect it to the docking station and we can watch a DVD. I would never watch a movie on it , however would definately use it for TV season series DVD's like Sex In the City, Buffy , stuff like that..:T
My Blue Zone TTP is for performance applications..
I would never buy a laptop for those purposes since you pretty much can't upgrade them..It may be fine today,,but tommorrow you are hooped..Me thinks!! :smackbutt:

I absolutley loved my corporate IBM Think Pad, it was well designed and pretty bullet proof. I loved the bevel front edge of it that made it feel virtually flat to the desk top. My personal feeling is IBM makes the best laptops, however they are so much money ;lx I still have an old IBM ThinkPad that thumps along at 100Mhz (I think?) It's the same size and thickness of Trev and Lex's Sony's (docked) :wedgie:
Jeff, the Gateways are very nice looking from what I have seen on the web page, I would like to see one in the flesh. The Acer Travelmates are rated very high for features, battery time and portibility.
Dell's always seem to have the sporatic questionable build quality from time to time... I don't know why they can't seem to shake it, but it seems to be their abatross. I do have faith in them though and have never had any problems with my Dell Desktops at work, I do have to admit I did have some problems with my Compaq however it was the Fujitsu drives that kept dying in it (3 HDs not a lie, 1 of the replacements was even DOA), but with my limited sampling, I can't summarally say any particular PC is junk, it mostly seems to be personal preference, much like when you talk about Hard drives Someone will always chime in "stay away from brand X" while somebody will counter with brand Y...etc
I can't see myself using a laptop more than my desktop PC ,no matter how small or hady it is, the keyboards sux and the screens are too small, however I really like the idea of bringing a Hi-performance laptop to a LAN party rather than lugging my Silver Dragon box and 15" LCD moitor over to my buddy's all the time. Sure the Hi-per laptop can't keep up to my desktop, but hey, what do you expect for something that fits under your arm and will kick the butts of many desktops while taking names? :hump: :wedgie: Now thats what I think is cool 8) We all want different things.
I don't know what I should get (I know what I want ;) ).... Mainly I want a Ultra high resolution screen, but those are only available in models that I'll get "hooped" for
I'm still juggling configurations and determining what I would get the biggest kick out of, seeing as it is just a Toy!
Well there is always this until I decide....

My Buddy Cam who always looks out for me is telling me to "Don't be Stupid" by spending a crap load of money on a laptop... Especially when I have 2 computers already, and a another one in the works. I said "hey if you can spend $3500 on some fabric screen, I can spend $3500 for a computer..." To which he stated I had him there..
He asked what I'm I going to use it for? I said as a terciary PC for Christine, surfing, mobile DVD playing, gaming...... He then more or less stated that I don't need anything powerfull to surf the net and that a mobile DVD player is under $500 bucks. I said "yeah, but I want to play games" To which he replied "as if you'll play games on it when you have 2 kick ass PC's already and another in the making.. Even then you'd have to pay a crap load of cash to get something that won't even keep up, have last years video card and generally be a bad investment for sufing the net".
I have to admit, he's not absolutely wrong and he wouldn't steer me wrong... Anyway after a trial by fire disscussion He mentioned that his co-worker has a cave lap top for sale that may fit the bill of what I really need.

Pat, I agree, considering I could get a Brand new HP 1.6Ghz Celeron with 14"TFT for $1500 Taxes in....
Trev, it's nice but $2254 for a 1.3 ghz 12" 1024x768 just doesn't seem right, I may as well get what I really want at that price. Oh, I was sizing out that Dell Wide screen... I think it's going to be too big for my likes.
I think I may go have a look around town and see, whats up

Heheh... Thanks Trev, That is one of my favorite shows for some reason or another
I get this weird feeling I'm going to end up with a Soni... Arghhh!! (just cause Trev told me so ;) )
Trev, weird the .22 pitch Sony is not on the site anymore. Maybe it was to cost prohibitive of a monitor? Still, it's cheaper than the Wide screen one and I think is a better monitor overall. Mine is priced $100 lower than what I paid, and it is an excellent monitor as well.

Trevor:
I saw the Samsung 191 at Future Shop yesterday and was also unimpressed. Of course, it was running at the wrong res. so I had to change that, then I made sure the settings were correct in terms of sync...but it STILL didn't look good. It was big, bold, and colourful, but the text was blurry. Unacceptable for something that expensive.
Bing:
I disagree with Cam - get something top-rate! If you want to play games on it, you'll need something powerful. True, it may not be able to keep up with your desktop...but it should be close. The GeForce 4 4200 Go is quite a performer, and with the new ATI and nVidia solutions coming soon, there should be no reason that a laptop can't kick absolute ass. It should have more than enough power to play most games. I'm really into the convenience of having a PC anywhere...as opposed to having to sit at a desk in front of this big thing. Desktops have their place, but I think laptops are also an excellent choice. So I say don't buy the dinosaur...get a widescreen Dell! :)

Hey Greg, glad to hear your home!
Jeff, I'm not sure how much real gaming I'm going to do, I'm just trying to justify it by saying I'll play games. Like you say though about the new cards coming up... That is the rub, Newer chips will be out and you can basically forget about upgrading the Laptop, it's not going to happen, as such a laptop should not be bought for the sole purpose of gaming, it's a nice to have... In my mind if I'm going to play a game, I'm jumping on Silver Dragon and the 21" monitor... There is also sopmething wrong with a lap top costing the price of a 51" Sony High Def TV...
Future shop has a Toshiba in the flyer for $1699
2.0 Celeron Mobile chip
256 MB RAM
DVD/CDRW Combo
14.1 XGA TFT
It seems to fit the bill and leave me money for a future High def TV...
Trev, My first chioce would be to see if the Sony Store can get it for you, that way if you have problems you can just drop it off to them.. Failing that, I would order it from Dell I suppose. What ever the case, that Sony GDM F520 is the best monitor on the planet PERIOD!

Bing:
Is there somewhere where I can find the dimensions of the 15" standard vs. wide screens? Just wondering how much of a difference there is. I saw a 1400x1050 (SXGA+) screen at FS (Gateway). I always though that would be too small, but it actually worked for me. That was a standard screen though. I wonder how it will look on the widescreen, as I think the height of the screen is smaller.
So I found the Gateway Canada site...can't order off it though. Their pricing seems better than Dell's though...a bit more competitive. Found a nice system with the ATI Mobility 9000 w/ 64Mb. Only problem is the screen is 1280x1024...now I'm kinda wanting SXGA+, but they don't offer it on that series. Grrrrrr....

No Trev, just wanting options ;)
Have fun at your favorite stores buddy....
Jeff, the Wide screen shouldn't be shorter in height, just remember it's the total pixel count that matters in the end. The wide screen at a minimum is 768 pixels (XGA), the same as any other standard screen.
Dell states the 8500 Wide screen overall dimension is 14.22"x10.87"
the 5100 is 12.9"x10.8" so it can be assumed to be the same height.
OK, I heading out too.. :later:

Cool Computer pictures Burke.. somebody posted those or simular a year back or so. It's always nice to see those :)
Andrew, First off, way cool about Glenda... Dude your getting a baby :T
A base 1100 is $1,299 before taxes, however that is pretty stripped down. To add on the features simular to the Tosh brings it to $1,919 before taxes and shipping which then comes to $2,133.44 to my door.
Included in the Dell
* 2.0 Celeron (non M) - the Tosh is a speed stepping Mobile meaning longer battery life.
* 246Mb RAM 2 DIMMS, - Tosh is the same amount, Single Stick
* 30Gb HD - same as Tosh
* Free 64MB Dell USB memory Key, - No Schwag with the Tosh
* Windows XP Home - Same as Tosh
* Integrated NIC - Same as Tosh
* Intenal modem - Same as Tosh
* 24xCDRW/DVD - Same for Tosh
* Word Perfect Productivity (love this stuff) - Not sure on the Tosh
* Norton 2003 90 day trial - Not sure on the Tosh
* 3Year Warranty - 1 year on the Tosh (I bet thats where the price difference is)
* 12.9"w X 10.8"d X 1.83"h X 7.78lbs - Tosh is 12.6"w X 10.9"d X 1.4"h X 7lbs
The Toshiba Satellite 1110
* The Tosh comes with a 16MB of dedicated VRAM 7500 Mobility Radeon - Intgrated Intel Extreme graphics for the Dell :(
* Floppy drive - None for the Dell (anybody use these anymore?)
$2,133.44 to my door for the Dell
$1,919.87 Pick up the Tosh at FS
$213 price difference

Well, just pulled the trigger on the first Dell. This is for my parents. It will be primarily for internet duties. Decided on the 5100 over the 1100 primarily because of the internal wireless card. Andrew indicated that he was concerned about breaking the antennas on his external card. As this will be moved around a bit, I thought it was better to be safe than sorry. Also thought about the D600M, but it had a 14" screen, and my parents wanted to go with the larger screen.
Bing:
One thing I noticed on the Toshiba's I saw at Future Shop was the display. Out of everything I looked at, it seemed the poorest. Also, both machines had a distinctively 'dim' strip running along the right-hand side of the screen - across its whole height. The colours also seemed a bit bland. Of course, that was comparing against the Sonys which are perhaps a bit too vibrant. :) Otherwise, I thought the Toshibas were nice...just didn't like the styling.

Bing any notebook from FS will come with a 1 year warrenty...though you'll be able to buy an extended as well but that would easily make up the price difference you quoted. If you wanted to save moeny skip the CDRW and just go with a DVD drive...you can always upgrade that later...dido for extra ram etc.

Jeff, Cool Beans on the 5100. I have been looking at the 600M as well, there is something fundimentally wrong with paying $2600 for a 1.3 Ghz PC :wedgie: Although I must admitt the 600M does sound like a nice PC
Thanks for the feed back on the Toshiba Jeff, I really didn't see the same at the floor models in FS. Between the 100Dell and the Toshiba Satellite I would say the Tosh packs more value with the separate 16MB Radeon graphics card, 2.0 Mobile Celeron chip and 256MBRAM on one stick.
Andrew, I think having a CDRW on a lap top would be a nice extra... (m-u-s-t h-a-v-e) What I was commenting on in the warranty is if the Dell was dropped to 1year instead of 3 years, I bet the difference in price would be mitigated. Man Dell suxs how they get ya for every thing. When I was pricing out a 8500 the other day, the DVD/CDRW was free, today it's not but they are giving you the free USB key and shipping free. What they givith they also taketh... I think it best to order what you want in the first place for looking at the Dell prices of Hard drives and memory they totally gouge you more after the fact :F

WAY TO GO BING
However,,
Change your HD to the 40 GB version,,because it is a screemer for the Dell notebooks and runs at 5400 RPM
All the others run at 4200 RPM
You still have time to do this..
Just a heads up,,Maybe you knew this already..
Good call on the Memory!,,You can always add more later and likely cheaper if you buy some from Crucial.

Thanks for the heads up Trev, I had placed the 40GB in the order, but trimmed it back because I though I didn't need it. I had heard it is a smoking drive but thought I could do with out the RPMs for a quieter PC. I was also considering a 2.0 Ghz for a longer battery life and maybe a cooler quieter PC... Ah well, ya talked me in to it. I'll submit a e-mail change and hope it takes...
See, damn, coming back here just cost me another $100 :smackbutt:

Kevin will love this..
Rules for CATS to live by............
BATHROOMS:
Always accompany guests to the bathroom. It is not necessary to do anything. Just sit and stare.
DOORS:
Do not allow any closed doors in any room. To get door open, stand on hind legs and hammer with forepaws. Once door is opened, it is not necessary to use it. After you have ordered an "outside" door opened, stand halfway in and out and think about several things. This is particularly important during very cold weather, rain, snow, or mosquito season.
CHAIRS AND RUGS:
If you have to throw up, get to a chair quickly. If you cannot manage in time, get to an Oriental rug. If there is no Oriental rug, shag is good. When throwing up on the carpet, make sure you back up so it is as long as a humans bare foot.
HAMPERING:
If one of your humans is engaged in some activity and the other is idle, stay with the busy one. This is called "helping," otherwise known as "hampering."
Following are the rules for "hampering:"
1) When supervising cooking, sit just behind the left heel of the cook. You cannot be seen and thereby stand a better chance of being stepped on and then picked up and comforted.
2) For book readers, get in close under the chin, between eyes and book, unless you can lie across the book itself.
3) For paperwork, lie on the work in the most appropriate manner so as to obscure as much of the work as possible or pretend to doze, but every so often reach out and slap the pencil or pen.
4) For people paying bills or working on income taxes or Christmas cards, keep in mind the aim: to hamper! First, sit on the paper being worked on. When dislodged, watch sadly from the side of the table. When activity proceeds nicely, roll around on the papers, scattering them to the best of your ability. After being removed for the second time, push pens, pencils, and erasers off the table, one at a time.
5) When a human is holding the newspaper in front of him/her, be sure to jump on the back of the paper. Humans love to jump.
6) When human is working at computer, jump up on desk, walk across keyboard, bat at mouse pointer on screen and then lay in human's lap across arms, hampering typing in progress.
WALKING:
As often as possible, dart quickly and as close as possible in front of the human, especially on stairs, when they have something in their arms, in the dark, and when they first get up in the morning. This will help their co-ordination skills.
BEDTIME:
Always sleep on the human at night so he/she cannot move around.
LITTER BOX:
When using the litter box, be sure to kick as much litter out of the box as possible. Humans love the feel of kitty litter between their toes.
HIDING:
Every now and then, hide in a place where the humans cannot find you. Do not come out for three to four hours under any circumstances. This will cause the humans to panic (which they love) thinking that you have run away or are lost. Once you do come out, the humans will cover you with love and kisses and you will probably get a treat.
ONE LAST THOUGHT:
Whenever possible, get close to a human, especially their face, turn around and present your butt to them. Humans love this, so do it often. And don't forget guests.

Burke, what did they do to the vechical that would be offensive??
The cheerleaders didn’t do anything offensive to a vehicle, but in the movie, some goons rolled one over that belonged to one of the “replacement” players. That might offend people who are really attached to their vehicles. :>)

I always print off what I order, so I have track of what's coming.
I ordered a wireless mouse with USB and a USB light for the Notebook from the Sony store.
I also ordered some compact 128 MB Flash cards for my Canon G3 and a 128 MB Ram chip for my Laptop. This will increase my video memory to 48 MB and the Laptop to 384 MB the max I can squeeze into it.

That is a real sweet one..
Well,,
I did it!,
I am surfing from the bedroom with a 100% signal stength.
With my old set-up I could not connect from here.\
I am using the new G card adapter in the laptop.
The wireless Router being used is still the B unit.
To my old B unit,I connected the signal booster.
I get a 90% to 100% signal form the garage and the deck.
So , I am pretty much set.
I don't think I will need to use the G Router than and can take it back.
The G router will transfer at 54 MBPS
My B router transfers at 11MBPS..
Do I need that transfer rate??
If I use the G Router, than the B router and Booster become not needed
as I can not use the Booster with the G router
Thoughts?

Trevor:
I'm new to this whole wireless networking stuff, but from what I understand if you are using the wireless just for browsing the net then the B version is sufficient. In this case you are limited by the bandwidth of your high-speed connection, which does not come close to the limit of the B standard. However, if you're using the network to move large files between computers, the G standard will be better as it will allow for faster data transfer.

Andrew, that is soo cool! You and Glenda are unique individuals ... Congrats buddy!
Trev, typical 100Tbase transfer speeds are around 7Mb/sec (depending on hardware), so you wouldn't really need that router unless your on a gigbit system, which you arn't. (note your net card in your PC is also 100Tbase) With gigabit you can expect around 20Mb/sec, thats what we are installing in the U of S campus.
Well taking a page out of Trev's books, I have already "Upgraded" my laptop with a 40GB drive and I haven't even received my order confirmation yet :smackbutt: Now that Trev has also pointed me towards that Crucial RAM :smackbutt: I may order a 512MB stick to put in the Dell for the price is 1/4 of what Dell wanted. Andrew, if you decide to get more RAM Crucial is where you should get it from.
Thanks for pointing that out to me Trev, :T You are the "Ultimate Consumer"

Thanks for those links Jeff, they were a good read. I have also read the keyboard is questionable, at http://computers.cnet.com/hardware/0-1027-404-20893611.html I hope it's not totally bad, but hey I'm a crappy typist anyway so it won't much matter.
One thing I find amusing is how many people who are not use to 1600x1200 resolutions complain about it. It never fails, people are so use to seeing Icons the size of Toonies and then when it's 5mm they always say it blurry  Just ask Trev.. :wedgie:
I have been using 1600x1200 forever and I hope it is good on the Dell. I was concerend that a 15.4 monitor is a bit small for for 1600x1200 (or 1920x1200 Wide Screen) and that a 1680x1050 maybe a more appropriate size, However the 0.172 pitch of the WUXGA screen should make up for that. In the end I think is worth the extra cost for that resolution, for me anyway... It should be tack sharp.... (typical LCDs are about 0.25-0.29 pitch) I guess I'll find out soon enough.

You guys know your stuff!!
This is just for surfing the NET..So it should be good.
No plans on transfering files..So don't need the G Router..
I'll take it back.
Interesting on the new PC Netwrok card which is a G , is that I get 100% signal in the Bedroom.
The OLd Network which is a B , still in the old Laptop only gets a 60% signal in the Bedroom. At least it gets a signal..Without the booster it couldn't get any signal..
Anyways,,The new PC network card was a good investment,,they sure have improved these devices from the last 2 years.
So ,,The G Router goes back,,Maybe I will exchange it for the WET 11 which will allow my XBOX to connect LIVE wirelessly.. :boobies:

I have to admit I have difficulties with higher resolutions myself. I also don't like the low resolutions...I think 1024x768 should be the baseline. But I do find 1600x1200 way too small. I know the proponents say it isn't smaller...but it is!!! You can make the fonts larger but that seems to defeat the purpose in some ways.
My comfort range, after having tested it at FS the other day, is 1400x1050. With ClearType on, it looks very, very good. BTW, I don't run ClearType on my 15" Samsung. It runs at 1024x768 and for the life of me I could never understand the fuss with ClearType. It makes the text darker yes, but also blurrier thanks to the antialiasing. I want RAZOR sharp text. Then I used it on the 1400x1050 and realized it does look good on the right monitor. Text was still sharp while also being more readable.
Incidentally, someone on one of those DellTalk threads mentioned that the WSXGA+ models will not run games in native mode, either wide or with vertical letterboxing. This isn't true, is it? This is the one I will get and an ABSOLUTE requirement is that games can be played in a native res.

I'm using 1280x960 @100HZ and really like it.
Plus it's still a 1:33 ratio ..
The next up to maintain the 1:33 ratio is the 1600x1200 resolution which I could handle if the print was as sharp as a pin,,which unfortunaelty it isn't.
I tried to go back to 1024x768 but found it to be to large.
Plus anything other than the 1:33 ratio just doesn't look right..

Wee are not worthy oh powerfull one.......
Trev, :wedgie: Just cause your my buddy!
Jeff, I have read that thread, and I really don't understand what all the fuss is about. I don't think they fully understand pixels and resolutions.... The one person who has a i8500, is a programer and goes on about the screen not having the extra placed on the side "This display isn't a normal 15.4" display with extra space tacked onto the sides, it's a *shorter* but wider display which happens to have a 15.4" diagonal. (Rough measurements: 33cm wide by 21cm high, compared to 30cm by 23cm on my 15.4" 7000.) I don't think it's a good tradeoff." He's commiting the same basic misconceptions most people do about "the black bars on DVDs cutting off the tops and bottoms" Nothing is cut off, the screen still has 1200 vertical pixels, it doesn't matter than the physical size of the screen is 2cm shorter. Same as a DVD that is wide screen. Add to this that UXGA i8500 has a pixel pitch of 0.172mm for the 1200 vertical pixels, versus a desktop LCD monitor that has the same 1200 vertical pixels but has typical pixel pitch of 0.27mm, I only see it as being tack sharp with no screen door effect.
Anyway, your concern of the SXGA may be a valid one for 1400x1050 is a non standard resolution in gaming. Games are usually programed in the usual 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, 1600x1200. Now if the actual native resolution of the Dell SXGA is in fact 1400x1050 it would have to interpolate to a standard resolution. Interpolation is never the desired way to view an image, however it's a nessesary evil with LCD's. This can range from bad to very acceptable depending on how the conversion is handled, so it's tough to say with out seeing it first hand. The Dell SXGA panel may in fact be a 1280x1024 native and interpolates to 1400x1050 or in the case of the WSXGA, interpolated to 1680x1050. (best call Dell and see what they say it is)
I know you state your priority is in gaming, however I must say that if it is, a lap top should not be your choice of weapon. The limitations of the non upgradable chassis and the LCD panel make it a poor choice for that. Pure gaming rigs should always be full size ATX boxes that are fully upgradable and have CRT monitors, thats just the way it is... Having said that, if the choice was mine, I would still take the 1400x1050 SXGA(1680x1050 WSXGA) display over a 1024x768 display even if it had to interpolate for games, just because my laptop would be used for a minimal percentage of games. I would just concede to the fact that the notebook must also do other things well that is going to compromise gaming. A note book is just the wrong tool to ever be an ultimate game machine. That's why I will always have a CRT monitor, its resolution versatility can't be beaten and no sexy slim LCD can convince me of that otherwise.
I hope that made sense, if not please email or give me a call and we can talk further about this off line.
*Note* Ghost Recon supports 1920x1200 Widescreen

If there's one thing I'd definatly change now that I've had my laptop a little while is that I wish I'd gone with the internal mini PCI card for the wireless instead of the PCMCIA card...I just know I'm going to break it one day
I can't believe its only 8:47PM...I'm exhausted already...to many late nights lately...better get used to it I guess

Hey Guys!,
I am surfing from the bedroom!.
This is very cool to say the least.
I hear you Andrew , on surfing from other rooms. 8)
I have to admit that of all the laptops that I
looked at over the weekend, the Sony has the best looking screens.
Very bright and vibrant.
I didn't do anything with the monitor yet.
Next step will be to call Dell.
However I would like to see more on the Sony 17" Widescreen,,just to see what that is all about!
I took the G Router back and picked up a nice compact carry case to
store the laptop into when needed.
Andrew, don't even say that.. You have a nice machine that does what you want and only cost you a severe beating and a few fingers...

Wel,,After more research and checking stats.
The Monitor I think I will get will be the 17" Widescreen SDMV72WH.
Everything seems right about it..
True 16x9
Resolution at 1280x768
.22MS response time --This is the lowest I have seen in an LCD
Luminance 450 cd/m2
Brightness 500:1
Dot pitch .29mm --This seems high, but right in with the rest of the pack.
HDTV compatible..720p and 1080i
The color is Dark Blue with Silver,,So it's going to match well With my new Blue Zone TTP.

Bing, good post. Don't worry it all made sense. I'll formulate an email reply after I write this.
Trev: good call on the Sony. Looks sweet. That is gonna take the Blue Zone TTP to the next level for sure. :hump:
Watched some good movies this weekend. Really enjoyed Barbershop with Ice Cube. Josie and the Pussycats today...not a bad flick and wonderful fodder for the AdBusters crowd, however disillusioned they are. :)
Have a good night folks.

Really enjoyed Barbershop with Ice Cube.
Glad to hear you liked that one., Barbershop was one of the funniest, yet heartwarming, movies of the past year. The story is full of strong human values and interesting characters. I was especially impressed at what a believeable job ice Cube did -- withourt resorting to "rap" during the movie. But the whole cast worked very effectively as an ensemble. The DVD of this one is in my DVD jukebox to be enjoyed time after time.

Morning all :later:
Andrew, don't sweat it, you've been busy with more important things ;)
Trev, about the only reservation I would have on that monitor for you is the size, but if you think your OK with that, then let her buck! :yesnod:
That is a good price for a FProjector however it's only 800x600 native, which is fine for DVD playback, you would need higher resolution (1280x720) for Hidef signals.
But hey, its cheap like borsh...

Sunday's Dilbert strip (http://www.dilbert.com/comics/dilbert/archive/images/dilbert2003040261316.gif) is a dead ringer for our company, check it out. Note I made it a link since some of us poor saps still have to use 1024x768 :banghead:
So Pr@, how has your first 2 days of fatherhood going? Having second thoughts yet? Since I'm not ever having kids I have to live vicariously through you and Erik ;) I *love* the name Lauren, such a lovely name. :)
Trev, always upgrading! I need one of those wireless booster thingies, but then why don't they just build the booster into the wireless unit in the first place? Nothing like claiming 100+ foot coverage and only delivering about 30. Nice monitor you're getting! Edit: Oh you did get a Sony... stealth strikes again :? Even I have a Sony monitor, granted it's an old POS which I bought second hand 4 years ago after my 15-incher died. I haven't bought a "new" monitor in close to 10 years.
Glad you guys like my 3D graphics. That software is fun. And now I can claim I bought a new toy. And since me spending $40 is like Trev spending $400, it's like a major purchase for me! :)
Had a busy weekend. Due to the weather Heather's basketball tournament was cancelled, so we cleaned house Saturday and then I worked on a whole house audio system Sunday, 12 rooms of sound we ran speaker and Cat5 wire for. I'm still sore today.
Oh well, I still have a lot of posts to catch up on, so later folks!
Work strikes again, chapter 4662352763573265327: when they reset the clock on the phone system, they went back 11 hours instead of ahead 1 hour, so right now the clock on the phone reads Sunday April 6 8:47 PM. Hoops...

TIME-TRAVELER' BUSTED FOR INSIDER TRADING
Wednesday March 19, 2003
By CHAD KULTGEN
NEW YORK -- Federal investigators have arrested an enigmatic Wall Street wiz on insider-trading charges -- and incredibly, he claims to be a time-traveler from the year 2256!
Sources at the Security and Exchange Commission confirm that 44-year-old Andrew Carlssin offered the bizarre explanation for his uncanny success in the stock market after being led off in handcuffs on January 28.
"We don't believe this guy's story -- he's either a lunatic or a pathological liar," says an SEC insider.
"But the fact is, with an initial investment of only $800, in two weeks' time he had a portfolio valued at over $350 million. Every trade he made capitalized on unexpected business developments, which simply can't be pure luck.
"The only way he could pull it off is with illegal inside information. He's going to sit in a jail cell on Rikers Island until he agrees to give up his sources."
The past year of nose-diving stock prices has left most investors crying in their beer. So when Carlssin made a flurry of 126 high-risk trades and came out the winner every time, it raised the eyebrows of Wall Street watchdogs.
"If a company's stock rose due to a merger or technological breakthrough that was supposed to be secret, Mr. Carlssin somehow knew about it in advance," says the SEC source close to the hush-hush, ongoing investigation.
When investigators hauled Carlssin in for questioning, they got more than they bargained for: A mind-boggling four-hour confession.
Carlssin declared that he had traveled back in time from over 200 years in the future, when it is common knowledge that our era experienced one of the worst stock plunges in history. Yet anyone armed with knowledge of the handful of stocks destined to go through the roof could make a fortune.
"It was just too tempting to resist," Carlssin allegedly said in his videotaped confession. "I had planned to make it look natural, you know, lose a little here and there so it doesn't look too perfect. But I just got caught in the moment."
In a bid for leniency, Carlssin has reportedly offered to divulge "historical facts" such as the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden and a cure for AIDS.
All he wants is to be allowed to return to the future in his "time craft."
However, he refuses to reveal the location of the machine or discuss how it works, supposedly out of fear the technology could "fall into the wrong hands."
Officials are quite confident the "time-traveler's" claims are bogus. Yet the SEC source admits, "No one can find any record of any Andrew Carlssin existing anywhere before December 2002."
Weekly World News will continue to follow this story as it unfolds. Keep watching for further developments.

Funny article Lex. Of course, if I were a time traveler from the future, I would buy a winning lottery ticket, then deposit the funds 30 years in the past and let them earn interest!
Finally got caught up in all the posting frenzy over the weekend, sheesh Bing ordered a laptop too!? I'm way behind the times with my 1.0 GHz Dell. Oh well, I need to upgrade my job first anyway.

OSIT...oh wait I'm taking this week off! Well after letting us sleep most of the first night lauren remembered she was a new born and woke us up quite a bit last night...right of passage I guess
One of the reasons I wanted a NetGear wireless router is that the antanae is removable allowing you to easily add a higher gain antanae if need be...so far though I can get a strong signal anywhere in the house...the master bedroom is the weakest at 65%. I haven't tried outside in the yard yet though...it has to warm up a little for that. Looks like this week is going to be nice weather wise so maybe I'll get my wish after all.

David, bummer, I'd rather the Lady Vols be meeting UTEX than UCONN. Tired of getting beat by UCONN. But I think we got a good shot this year.
Men's basketball, what's that? LADY VOLS in the championship game for the first time since 1998. For this program, that's a long time.
