No network geeks here?I are a network geek  As for beginner books, how about Networking for Dummies, or TCP/IP for Dummies? They might be a good starting point. Then you can play around. Do you have any specific networking questions? It's weird, but my company's firewall blocks out the Reply page nowadays, so I can't post to the TTP anymore from work. Oh well! I guess Lex has some questionable content on the Reply page. LOL! Does the firewall say what content was blocked, so Mats can change the reply page? Or can you tell your firewall admin to get their act together (this is one reason why companies shouldn't block content in the first place!) Maybe I should send you my Stealth(tm) system and see if that helps.
Getting close to a flip.. just a few more posts to go...

Time to hit the sack... I have some consulting work tomorrow! The person we installed the plasma for last weekend needs help getting her home network/cable modem up and running, so I'm going over there to fix it all up for her. I should print up a few copies of my resume to give to her...

Stretch that question out a bit you might get the next one not even trying Chris.
Was a very trying day today. I found out my speakers shipped yesterday. Great right?
Well, hold on a second. I called to try and setup the delivery arrangements with DHL, and she starts checking info. Well, fantabulous, my speakers were destined for right around Destin FLORIDA! OMG. Oh, before that, I found out the street name was wrong as well. Awesome!
I was one freeked out puppy for the next hour or two. I found this out around 12:30, and didn't actually talk to shipper again until 5:00. Still, they couldn't tell me they found my packages in Cincinnati where they were supposed to be.
I pretty well blasted my seller for mixing up the street name. :smackbutt: :wedgie: The shipper took care of the zip. Finally tonight, the seller finds out they did find the speakers, and get a new waybill on them. What the hell's a waybill?
Well, the long and short is, my speakers are supposed to come the first of the week, if all went as they say. :banghead: ing day. Whew. :letitout:

Kevin, I knew you would know something about networks... I just have this thing about buying a book labled for "Dummies or Idiots". I bet they are what I need though for I'm a idiot and I'm installing the fiber for a $15 million dollar network :E :sos: I have no actual questions right now for I don't know what to ask specifically. I just know I have a f**k of a lot to learn. In our meeting the other day my head was swimming with Acronom Hell xx) We have all these netsworks, subnetworks, private networks all connected to a 10 Gigabit system. The main driver for this is the Canadian Light Source Syncrotron (Linear partical accelerator).
http://usr-net.usask.ca/Images/USRnetMap.jpg
Trev, :?? by the time I get the PC up and running, it will be one slow assed machine. I have decided to just build a whole new PC in another case, rather than migrate my main system. I just thought I would start assembling the case parts and the A7N8x and see where I end up... I just can't afford to take down my current system for it is too much of a tool for me right now. On top of that it would not be an easy migration so best to just build another PC. Ask LEX, you can never have too many PC's :smackbutt:
Christine and I went out looking at TV's but you know what???? There isn't anything out there than I really want. I mean sure I take a lot of them, but not if I have to pay $5K and it doen't even have 720P native. I think I have to play the waiting game a bit longer until something comes out that will do what I want. Mostly I want something that will display my PC desktop at 1024x768, but I need a projector for that, and if I got a projector, then I would need a new (er) house... The 60" grand Wega will display 720P native, but it's LCD, it doesn't have good blacks and then there is the screen door thing.... ARHRHRGHGHGH! It's enough to drive a person crazy
Lex, bummer on the speakers. I know how you feel waiting for something as precious and as anticipated as those speakers.
Trev, that monitor was made just for you!
That Kneel suckers was for Trev's Home Theater.
My buddy Cam just bought himself a Stewart Firehawk Screen for his DLP projector, and he's wanting me to come out to Calgary to inaugurate it with him... I might be tied up with my new Job. :letitout: bummmer...

I'd upgrade but the frickin moths keeps flying out of my wallet! :boohoo:
Keeping up with me now will be no challenge, this is me putting on the breaks... Ok, we don't have a breaking icon, so pretend this peal out is actually the reverse. :driving: I've spent to freely since Jan 1, and it's showed up big time in my cable business balance. So, until further notice, my business is only buying what it has to to keep going. I shouldn't have bought that case and 80 gig drive last weekend, on the heals of twin 120 gig drives, recovery software, :blah: :blah: :blah: :blah: :smackbutt: Thank you sir may I have another. Thank you sir may I have another.
If anyone hears me breath spending on computers or cameras or anything except wire or connectors, please tell me to shut the f*ck up and put my wallet back in my pocket. Now, this doesn't include a possible MC-8 upgrade though. :P

That's my actual feeling Gordon... :? I didn't really need to upgrade my PC as I'm quite happy with the performance of my current rig. But somebody gave me a new Asus A7N8X mother board, which kind of forces the issue then  If I upgraded I would have liked to get the 3000XP, but it's just crazy money right now, especially when I can play any game I want at 1600x1200 with my current PC and it 2300XP. So I'm doing it more for the hobby of PC building, to build another complete PC and see what I end up with.
It's Trev's fault  ;) :smackbutt:

Our company's firewall just spits out some "DDR Score" whenever a page has so many instances of "offensive" text (sex, mp3, video file extensions, astrological/witchery stuff, etc), and then the score goes over a certain numerical value, it shuts down the page from where the offensive text begins. And no, we get no say so in what is and isn't "offensive". And most people aren't dumb enough to complain about not being able to surf a non-porn-related site (since it'd single them out as websurfers on company time). Some of the "bikini" photo links kill the HTG page loading due to the firewall. Anyhow, content filtering is just a crappy thing. Boo!

First a question -- is it even possible to have "too much Babealoos"? :>)
Second an observation -- this may have started out as a SOFTware issue, but with all the Babealoos, it quickly became a HARDware issue. :>)
Burke
Back to the SOFTware issues :) Hope I have fixed most of the problems related to Cookies used on the Forum. They simply didn't get set anymore but I found a workaround for it and it seems to work now.

Hey, every second counts
The car? Okay... it's a 1992 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4--the twin turbo model. It's heavily modified with all sorts of bolt-on replacement items from bigger turbos to bigger fuel injectors, intercoolers, fuel pump, exhaust, redone intake, body springs, brakes, etc, etc. Since it's an all-wheel drive with all-wheel steering (yes, all four wheels turn) it's difficult to find a dyno to measure the power. But we're currently estimating about 575 hp. Right now, she's getting a new computerized fuel control system that replaces the stock ECU, and it was about time so I also rebuilt the transmission and put in a new clutch and lightweight aluminum flywheel.
She and I were featured in the June 1998 issue of Turbo Magazine, chasing a U-2 spyplane down the runway. Beautiful 6 page color spread.
I don't have any pictures online to show you guys, unfortunately.
Chris, that sounds fricken' awesome!!!
Do you do any racing of anykind? Autocross, drag, etc.?
well I had a nice post composed addressing most everyone and I got a server fart and now it is all gone.

Pat- I've drag raced with it several times, but nothing recent with most of my speed toys. I think I'll try that out sometime when I get to Washington, now that I've got the new transmission and clutch. I should be able to get into the 10 second range in the quarter mile. I've autocrossed with it once, back in 1996, and did okay.

Howdy folks, happy Saturday!
Cool pic Mats, I'd hate to be the "owner" of that cubicle. But on the other hand I'd rather have that cubicle than the one I'm in now, let' s just say you don't need nearly as many peanuts to fill mine as the walls are only 4 feet high or so.
I finished the network install at the person's house. The builder only installed one ethernet jack, and in the basement whoever crimped on the plugs did them all wrong, one was wired bass-ackwards and the other ones were just stuff 'n crimp (never mind which color wire went with which pin). I redid those, activated the cable modem with the cable company and set up the router and got her online. I also did some cleanup of her PC, updated her anti-virus, cleaned up some viruses, and her browser cache which her son filled chock full of X?X-_ated websites, etc. :)

Mats- Funny pic. That reminds me of a tradition we had at the Air Force Academy. We called the day that was 100 days before graduation "100's Night". The seniors would always go out and party to celebrate, and while they were gone, the freshmen would trash or "redecorate" their rooms. I built a fishtank out of a guy's bed when I was a freshman. We turned rooms into skating rinks, filled them with shaving cream, etc. Somebody even made a room into a farm once, I think with a bunch of rabbits. It was considered a real compliment as a senior to have something really funny done to your room. The seniors that were hated were either left alone or just made plain messy.

Lex, don't go changing just because my company has an insane corporate content filtering in place. I see most of the HTG pages until the firewall picks up on the "questionable" stuff and shuts down a few HTG pages here and there, and there's really no telling what will set it off, so it's totally my problem (plus it happens on other sites as well, I'm just in surfing hell while at work), and I'll just hang out on the TTP from my home hook-up when I can.

DELL 1900FP
Now, besides the great prices on these Dell LCDs, these LCDs are super sweet! The slim bezel design, the sleek buttons, the very thin depth--it all adds up to a great LCD. The fact that it is a rebadged Samsung 191T makes it all the better. Samsung makes in my opinion the best LCDs on the market. So if you'd like to cross reference this review with others, you can check Samsung 191T reviews. But do take note that you won't get some features on the 1900FP as you will get on the 191T such as the 90 degree rotation.
Features & Build Quality
The 1900FP has a resolution of 1280x1024 and it can be run up to 75hz although 60hz is it's native refresh rate. I noticed that when you change the refresh rate to different settings the look of the font changes sometimes. I believe it is only on the VGA cable that this problem arises where you have semi blurry font @ 72hz. On a DVI cable I didn't notice any of that.
The LCD also has a very good button layout and OSD. When you use a DVI cable there are a few features which aren't needed as I guess the digital connection adjusts those settings automatically. While we're on the topic of the VGA versus the DVI cables, I have noticed that the really only difference I have noticed while using these LCDs is that the on the DVI cable, the whites on the LCD seem whiter than the VGA cable. You do get both cables with the 1900FP and there are two plugs on the LCD. You can connect each line to a different computer actually and switch back and forth!
I must say that the feel of the 1900FP is very solid. The swivel feature is somewhat stiff I've noticed, but that's always good. You don't want your position being moved after you've got it just in that right spot :) The cables are very high quality. They seem, to me, to be of much higher quality than any CRT monitor I've owned. The power cable is also nice. Half of it is a thin wire (which connects to the LCD) and the then there is a power box midway in the cable and the other half is heavy duty. This is good because you don't have ugly big cables on your desk then. It keeps things streamlined.

Computer Upgrade-itus is contagious -- strikes again here:
http://www.snuffworks.com/Computer/Kaypro.jpg
Anyone recognize that classic? (I have one -- somewhere around here.) :>)
Z-80 processor (8-bit)
Memory: 64k
Disc drives/mass storage: 2 x 180 kb single-sided 5 1/4 " floppy
CP/M operating system
Display: Monochrome 24 lines / 80 character line width (ASCII-only / no graphics)
When I bought that one, the bank was so unfamiliar with PC purchases they made me sign a commercial lien to get a loan to buy it. Now they just lump individual computer purchases in with any other unsecured consumer loans. Incredibly, it cost about the same dollar amount back then as my HP Pentium 4 with 1.8 gig memory, DVD burner, CD-ROM and 120 gig HDD cost a year ago (unadjusted for inflation -- if adjusted, it would have been almost twice as expensive as the HP!) The 300 baud external Hayes modem I bought to go with it cost about $400 and I had to write the comm software myself (with some help from the Hayes user group in town).

Darned kids and their pre-school....darned diapers....
By the way Bing...good-looking bike!
My neighbor buys bikes for his kids the way people buy shoes...hoping they will grow into it. So his 8year old is on an adult sized bike, his legs can't touch the ground when he's off the seat.
In case anyone else did or didn't know bikes shouldn't be purchased like clothes....they should be proper for the age. The rider should be able to stand flat-footed off the seat and there should be some room between the top of the frame and the crotch but it's only like 1 - 2" for a road bike...mountain-bikers like smaller (smaller frame means you can throw it around more).
It can be dangerous, especially if they can't touch flat-footed. Too big a frame means lack of control.
In the words of Lex, Thank you sir, may I have another...
i'm glad to see someone around here listens to what I say :)

GordOn, I will respectfully disagree. I think as long as you can get one foot flat leaning to one side, and your seat to pedal distance is ok, especially for a girl's bike that has a sloped down bar, then your ok. Yes, for a beginner rider, I'd agree. They need full flat feet control.

Thanks Gordo... ;) I'm with ya on the bike sizing. So often parents buy department store bikes that come only in 20" sizes for their kids, seeing the kids try to manuver these things is enough to give me convultions :nonod: Sizing of a bike is the most important issues next to weight. So many kids are forced to peddle these fully suspended gas pipes that weigh it at a hefty 40lbs all because it's the in thing, with no thought to fit. The reach is all wrong as they are forced to stretch out to the bars. They can barely manage it at stops as they attempt to hop of the seat with out nutting them selfs while trying to tip the bike to one side for clearance. I have seen this too often on our school bike ride trips. I also make it a habit to bring tools along as most times I find the mechanicals of the kids bikes are lacking to downright dangerous, brakes that don't stop, tires that are underinflated, squeaky and rusty components.... on top of ill fitting bikes. The list goes on and on.. But a ounce of prevention yeilds a pound of cures on our School rides just by taking care of these issues at the start :)
I have been a cyclist since forever and it was funny to see it wear off on Katherine. She stated in her new bike she wanted it to have gears, be light weight and that it fit well. She did not want a full suspension bike and wanted to enchew it for a lighter solid hard tail bike like her last one. We settled on the Trek after a few test rides of different models.
You should see my Mountain Bike. It was one of the first radical sloping top tube Canadian made bikes that started the revolution. It gives me so much crotch clearance with it's sloped tube, it looks to be the equivelent of a 14" bike, but it is a 17.5" :D Lex, I would never buy my girls a Girls bike. :P
Bummer on the Virus Gord, did it slip past NAV? (oohh that kinda virus)
Where is my bother Paul? Mention "bicycle" and he sniffing and tearing like an Italian master after sculpting a bicycle component or frame

Bing: Did someone mention bicycles? Sorry, don't have time to putup a bicycle smiley. Which MTB did you get? I don't seem to recall. I have a Rocky Blizzard from way back, another radical sloping top tube, cdn company as well. I worked for a bikeshop back in the late 80's to early 90's. My first two bikes were both road machines, and my third was my Rocky Blizzard, no suspension, but with a nice sloping top tube, it was a great bike! Got a pro-deal on that, straight from Rocky! I bought the last 16.5" frame, full Deore XT components and Tange Prestige tubing throughout. Suspension, HA, that's what your arms and legs are for. I was also the first to pickup the XT clippless peddals. I had the Shimano shoes for about a month before the pedals came in. It was funny, as soon as they got into the store, I asked the boss if I could buy them, he said, well I gotta setup a code for them and receive them into inventory. No problem, I says, code has been setup and they're in inventory. :)
Just heading out to my parents for dinner. Catcha on the flip side.
Alias is on tonight! Gonna tape that as I hate waiting for the commercials to end.

I've upgraded 3 Showstoppers (Two of them got 120GB Maxtor drives installed/upgrades (from the 30GB model), and another one got a 80GB drive in it (from a 20GB model)). The 80GB HD was an older 5400 rpm 2MB cache Western Digital model, and it's coming out for a newer WD 100GB 7200 rpm 8MB cache model because the 80GB drive is too noisy for my tastes) tomorrow once I get the 100GB HD LLF'd.
I was very successful in using RTVPatch 2.4 in migrating the shows on all 3 of my SS's onto their new hard drives. It was a little time-consuming with the LLF-ing the hard drives though (like 4 and 5 hours).
Can't believe I will have over 300 hours (combined) of recording time from my 3 Showstoppers. Just in time for the Dawson's Creek 4 episodes/day marathon on TBS starting tomorrow.

Nice Computer Burke, I'm dying to know what it was worth when it was new... ??
The Kaypro II, when new, cost about $1,800 US. Last year, my "new" HP actually cost a couple hundred less than that (and would have been even less if I hadn't opted for the model with the DVD burner). When the first IBM PCs showed up in retail stores, the model with similar specs to the Kaypro cost twice as much. Of course, instead of the Kaypro's Zilog Z-80 (which was available in pin-compatable versions that ran from 2.5 mHz to 10 mHz), they also had an 8-bit Intel 8088 processor (running at 4.7 mHz), with an optional math coprocessor, and used PC-DOS (later renamed MS-DOS) and were, by default, "IBM compatable". :>)

Heheh... Good deal Trev :wedgie:
Well seeing as everyone has an animated Avatar, I just had to make my own as well. Lets see how it looks.
I captured it from the DVD "Enter the Dragon" as a DivX avi. I then converted it to a gif file. The frame rate is a bit lower than the actual capture, which I'm not sure why is is slower than when I run it on my PC. Must be the bandwidth of the net or something...
Burke, $1800? That's not so bad considering what I paid for my first PC, a 486 DX2 50Mhz with 4MB RAM, 2MB video card, 251 Mb hard drive and 15" Magtronics monitor. $3500cdn with no CD rom or sound card.

Yep -- it was a great price for what it had when compared to its competition. Like I said, the comparable IBM PC at the time cost double what the Kaypro did. And there was a lot more software available for CP/M than for DOS. (That changed rapidly as developers realized the direction the market was taking.)

Geez, FINALLY. I just got home after driving all day to pick up a trailer. I got a great deal on a 18' flatbed car trailer off of E-bay here in Oklahoma, but had to drive all the way across the state for it. If I want, I should be able to turn around and sell it again up in Washington and maybe even make a few bucks. I probably need every cent I can save for the theater project right now. This is making me BROKE! :(
As hinted at, here's thumbnails of my magazine article from 1998 with me and my car. You can also go to: http://webm31b4.ntx.net/page1.htm to view them in larger detail and read the article in larger print. In case I've never mentioned it, I christened the car "Wild Blue" many years ago while I was at the Academy, in deference to my profession. You'll still find me using that name/handle on many forums--it became kind of a statement of my life.

Chris -- glad you made it back home safely. Sounds like quite a haul cross-country.I wonder if driving with an 18 foot trailer behind the car might actually be harder than jockeying a gigantic airborne tin can to refuel. ;>) Anyway. it sounds like you've successfully mastered BOTH daring feats!

What a busy weekend, and back to H-E-double-hockey-sticks this morning xx) xx) and it freakin' SNOWED last night! I'm beginning to think that winter is year round in NH, with a brief thaw in summer. :p:
Lots of posts to catch up on...
Trevor, the upgrade king... another laptop!? Sheesh, I wish I had money/job security so I could buy stuff again. At this rate I might have to get a McJob or a Wal-Job just to keep up.
Bing/Trev, I restored the TRS-80 Model III to working order. I don't have much software for it though. The Tandy 102 has a bunch of stuff I wrote for it so it can actually be a useful computer, though I don't use it much since I got the Dell a couple years ago.
Gordon, nasty virus. I wonder if it's related to what Heather had/still has. Her stomach still bothers her in the morning sometimes but she's doing a lot better now.
Mmm... bicycles. I'm a biker too. I need a new one though so I can ride to work this summer. Too bad that takes money like everything else.
Trev, I like the smiley hitting the window avatar. :) Bing, cool movie avatar. I'm gonna make an animated one sometime when time permits (probably sometime in 2004 at this rate).
Chris, nice car! I guess even when you're driving you like to fly! :) I like the name "Wild Blue" too, it fits the car, and your profession! Sometimes I call my Saturn the "Silver Bullet." Speaking of which, I need to take it in for some work. The weatherstripping is loose, it's due for an oil change and a tune-up. Where's that money again?
Speaking of bullets, nice Silvercats! Once again, when I have money I'll order more cables! Who knows when...

Hey Mats, I don't know if it's a time zone/DST thing but the clock is an hour off this morning. Speaking of which perhaps adding a time zone to the profile would be handy since so many of us are in different time zones. Then the forum can display local time for everyone.

True on the 1 hour off today since we swapped to summer time last night.
On the local time for each user... This has been back and forth during the years of CFBoards and the final decision went to have the server presenting the time as Server based time... now, the server is physically located here and virtually over in Timeyone EST... Since the major part of members are "over there" a workaround is to set the offset on the server 1 hour more off until you guys wake up and change to summertime too ;)

Good Morning from the great state of Alabama!
Haven't really caught up on TTP yet. Very busy this morning already.
Had a great time this weekend at the horseshoe tournament. Of all things that could of happened, Matt's brother, Mark Booth, won the tournament and got his name on the plaque. It was a great day! If anyone had even hinted that he would win we would have all laughed about it. You have to know Mark. He's had 2 brain surgery's and has seizures quite frequently and takes medication daily. Not to mention he is an alcoholic. He was on the road for 12 years hitch hiking. Never thumbed but would sit on the side of the road reading books until someone stopped to pick him up. He has some great road stories. Anyway, he has thrown with us before but never in the tournaments. I don't believe we've ever seen him throw a ringer as he always throws crazy..... BUT on this day someone was no doubt looking over him because he was throwing ringers. Everyone was simply amazed at how well he did throughout the entire tournament. SIMPLY UNBELIEVABLE! Of course he had a good partner in Mike Fleming but Mike could not have done it without Mark's help. Mark winning made the whole tournament weekend a great one. GO MARK!
Have a great day guys!

Well, looks like today won't be speaker day. The DHL guy called promptly at 8:00 AM, said I was first on delivery route, I said, well, can't I be last? He said around 3, I said ok. However, he only has 3 of 4 boxes. CRAP. So, I said, no point bringing them until you can bring them all.
Apparently, there's an additional truck that comes in later today, that's not there yet, so I said wait until tomorrow, maybe you will have them all then. Susan from the corporate DHL center has been assisting with tracking, and will call me back later today to see if they've located the 4th box. She's been really helpful. In fact, she said on Fri she would call today to check status with me, but I called them this morning, and was just going through a regular tracking agent to find out if they could find where my 4th box is, he said hold on, and Susan answered. Pretty good service considering I didn't even ask for her. She's going to check with the Knoxville Office later today and phone me back with what info she can figure out.
Keep in mind, it was the shipping agent that put the wrong zip code on the boxes, and they were headed to Ft. Meyers FLA until they relabled in Cincinnati. My concern is, they only labeled 3, and my 4th box may be in route to FLA still. Maybe not, we shall see...
Thanks on the cats guys. I really like the metal bullets. Very unusual, and high 8) factor!

Great post Eduardo! It was like a little short story, complete with graphical overture. :)
Talked to DHL again, heck, now they've turned the ones they have over to a shipping agent, and still can't tell me where the 4th box is. Looks like to me if they track by box, they could just plug all the trcking numbers in for each box and see where all of them are.
I'm trying to determine if they have both speakers. If they do, then I will accept delivery of what they have. If they don't, then I won't accept, they have a little time to get me some speakers or insurance check. Hopefully, that's all for naught, and they will find it tomorrow. I hope.

Hey Guys!
Love my computer, but one thing that drives me nuts is NOISE!! My computer is so loud - at least, too much for me!! So I'm starting on the road to a silent PC. First thing I need is a top-class heatsink for my CPU that is SILENT. Check this out:
http://thetechzone.com/db_images/id245_images/pic7.jpg
8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O
That thing is huge!! Apparently it kicks ass as a cooler as well. I hope this is the beginning of a silent PC for me!! :)
Ciao.

Jeff -
That looks like the innards of a Cray supercomputer! :>) I know exactly what you mean about computer noise -- one reason I upgraded a year ago is because my previous primary computer sounded like a 747 warming on the taxiway at Intercontinental airport. :>) (The other, of course, was it being about as slow running as molasses right out of the refridgerator.)
When I used it in the HT, I had to use headphones to hear my music, the computer was so damned loud! Needless to say it wouldn't have made a very good HTPC. It is computers, not children, that should be seen but not heard. :>) Fortunately, my "new" computer is more quiet than the air conditioning system (which means it is VERY quiet, fortunately).
Burke
PS -- I'm NOT going to "set it up" tonight. :>)

Pr@ - Where do you find time to do all your time
I'm usually up around 7 each morning so I can usually get in a few hours work before glenda's up...then work all day and go to bed late...pretty much describes my life.
Jeff my laptop's very quite ;) I'm not sure that cooler is going to get you where you want to go though...orb styles generally aren't very effective and its got a small fan which means its going to have to spin at a higher RPM to generate the same air flow. I'd think that a large fan spinning more slowly would be better...at least that's what Bing preaches ;x(

Morning folks. :p: Happy April Fools Day!
Got this in an email:
This is a beautiful photo of a giant flag in Arizona.
The photo is authentic and untouched.
The picture was taken on regular Kodak 35mm film.
The person who took the picture couldn't believe the image created by the sun's rays.
Nice of them to share with the world!

Andrew:
The laptop idea is on hold, only because the new car will come soon and I have to focus on that!! :) Wouldn't mind a 'surfing' computer like Trev's new Sony though.
That isn't an Orb heatsink though - even though it looks like one. It's actually a product from a company called Zalman. They have been making tremendous strides in creating a completely silent PC. That heatsink is rated to sufficiently cool a P4 3.06Ghz in its silent mode - where the fan is rated at 20dba. The reviews on these things are spectacular, putting them in the elite class of heatsinks.
David:
Actually, weight is a concern. There are two versions of the heatsink; a completely copper model (shown) or an aluminum/copper mix. The Al/Cu model falls within the weight specs for the P4, but the copper model does not. It weighs about 2 pounds, which is definitely very heavy. It has a secure mounting system, but it is not recommended for people who move their computers around a lot. Imagine that puppy falling and crashing through your video card!!
Ciao guys.
Jeff Kowerchuk
04-01-2003, 12:09 PM
Forgot one thing! Maybe the pic is misleading Andrew...but actually the fan on the heatsink is quite large - 92mm. It runs at slow speeds...between 1500 and 2000 RPM I believe. Very quiet. Comes with a little doohickey so you can control speed.
Trev:
Your system rocks! I love the blue lights, they are very sweet. I don't like loud computers, but they are accentuated in my small bedroom. If the computer is in a larger room it doesn't seem so bad. :)
Ciao guys.

This is the fan on my system (YSTech)...notice no central motor. Silent...efficient. Magnets are on the tips of the fan to keep it in balance, reduce fan noise and drive the fan...a large portion of fan noise results from the blade cutting the air...just so you know.
Hence the name... tip magnetic driver (TMD)
http://www.holomaxx.com/trade/images/product_ystech_fan70mmTMD.jpg
when they finally make an 80 -92mm I'll be all over it...the 70mm is very efficient but that partly because I have a big-assed copper heatsink: Thermalrights SK-7 (course I can only go to an 80mm)
http://www.a1-electronics.co.uk/Res_HeatsinksCases/Heatsinks/2002/Thermright_SK7_front.jpg
http://www.furioustech.com/sk7/sk3.jpg
This combination gives an estimated 0.50 - 0.52 C/W which is pretty darn good. But I have the higher speed fan which is noisier but not much.
The lower the number the better in case anyone didn't know. For every 1 watt increase you get a relative increase in degrees C. so the slower the temp rise the better...makes sense.

For you I would only recommend the SLK-900U.

HEAVY 570g It IS the ultimate...haven't seen a price on it yet.
This IS the king of heatsinks...
a little heavy though...but who cares! pair that with a good 92mm fan and whoa!
Whoops... you have the A7N8X - Deluxe right...okay this wouldn't be a good choice because you have to bend some capacitors (okay alot of bending)... The SLK-800 would be another respectable choice and would still look darn good, also one of the highest rated heatsink on the market.

Hello everyone :later: I'm on lunch..
Nice fan Jeff. I was wondering how that thing would sound. If you get it let me know, I have heard good things about it.
Trev, That SLK Gordon was showing was what I was telling you to buy, but you went for the purdy lights of the Volcano 9... :smackbutt:  The Volcano 9 is still a nice cooler...
Gordon, I had a few of those TMD fans. I ended up not using them for they can't or don't like to be throttled. They need about 4watts to start from a dead stop, so if you are running then through a fan bus, they have a high chance of burning out if the bus speed is set low for they will not have enough input power to start from a start. As well in my tests of the TMD, when throttled to a low speed (2000RPM) they tend to make a slight occelation noise, most likely due to the design of the fan. Suffice to say for my application they did not do it for me. They are quieter than typical fan of the same CFM rating, however I still found them loud. They do have a distictive sound however that I though was rather cool. :termin8:
Chris, your avatar is funny... Whats the idea of this Hound Dog? Can somebody please splain it to my dumb ass? I really like that hound dog of Chris's and David.

Hey Guys!!,,
Back up from a nap!..
Bing,,I had originally been looking at a fast DELL Laptop myself.
Then after evaluating what I would really want to use it for..SURFING the WEB was the priority.
Realized I did not want a 10LB beast for that purpose.
I already have a power house as a Desktop..
I had my eye on a Panasonic Tough Book that weighs 2.2lbs..Very cool very light..
Only a 10" screen and no CD drvive ,a PIII runnning at 833 MZ etc.. Plus,,$2299 CDN at London Drugs.. Still I was drooling over this one..
But not sure because of the cost and what you actually get.
Then I stumbled onto this Sony at Future Shop..
Light,,Small,,12" screen..Docking station that provides a CDR,plus DVD rom ,,PIII again but at 1.2 GHZ..Only $1889 on the Future Shop Customer appreciation night on Sunday..
Didn't even know that there was such a computer,,just stumbled upon it when I was looking around.
The whole unit is very compact and small when released from the dock station..Very Cool indeed as I am sure that Lex can attest to.
This little Sony ROCKS!!... :-y

The speakers are in the house. I repeat, the speakers are in the house!
It took my first burst of energy to move the Grand Prix's, and tote all the boxes in on my compact hand truck. (you know, the folding kind?) No home should be without one! :)
I am preparing to get the stands out, and hoping daughter gets here soon to help me gentle lift speakers out.

Well it was a tough day splicing fiber.. Now I know what a watch maker feels like on a busy day.... Hope to have a good routine set soon... However I sure feel wound up right now.
I just slipped in John Mayer room for Squares CD as it always seems to relax me :|

David, nice flip picture! That WA state is one beautiful place, that E is so lucky to live there...
Speaking of Hey E!! Congrats on finishing a class, what cha working on again?
Kevin, Nice Flag picture. I always like those symbolic juxaposition shots.
Andrew, you are correct ;) I have always professed a larger slow RPM fan for quietness. In my old 1200 T-bird I had a 92mm 2000 RPM fan that allowed me to overclock the Tbird to 1420Mhz, all the while being super stealthy as well.
Chris, Wild Blue looks to be one awesome ride! NIce that you built it yourself, I admire that, as I dabbled in car hotrodding way back when!
George, Funnneeee (groan) ;)
Mats, great Avatar, Im a big fan of Steve!
Pat, that sounds like on awesome monitor ! :T What do you use it for at work? Graphics editing?
Trev, I have always admired that Sony note book in the store, however I concluded that most times I would always have it docked to the CD-R/DVD drives anyway, so then the size advantage is negated because it's thicker than I like when the drives are docked. It's still one cool PC, and I'm glad you found something that will work for you, me I'm such a loser I say bring on the 10 lb brick :loser: :wedgie: Well maybe 6-7lbs xx)
You had me thinking hard about it though... Get well buddy, oh btw, I did not ruin you fan, i only gave you another reason to upgrade. Get yourself another LED Anted fan for the Power supply and then also get one of these..
http://www.bigfootcomputers.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/psumod/lightbluepsumod_big.jpg and your set ;)
EJ, That RPTV is a serious problem... ;) I have been wanting one forever, but I just can't find one that fits the bill given my current room placement constrains. It seems a Front projector would do the trick, but I need a separate room for that :| Sigh... maybe I should cool my heels for a bit until the new models are out.
Lex takes the flip, but that was suppose to be my girlfriend Trev :smackbutt: ;)
Congrats on the new speakers Lex! How superiour are those to you Concert Grand Pianos?
Anybody I failed to mention, don't feel slighted in the least, I just decided to not pick on you :wedgie: Did I mention how much I like this smiley :wedgie:  But anyway, Hey Guys! :later:

Trev, can you connect to the 'net through the router on your other PC?
Try this on the laptop. Go to a command prompt, and type ipconfig /all followed by the enter key. Take note of the IP address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS servers. Compare them to those on your other PC. They should match, except for the IP address, which should match except for the last number.
If they don't look right, right-click on My Network Places, then click Properties. Right click the network connection and select Properties. Double-click on TCP/IP. It should be set up to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". If they are, go back to the command prompt and type "ipconfig /release" and hit enter. Then type "ipconfig /renew" and enter. If all goes well, type ipconfig /all again and see if you got the right settings. Once they're set, you should be able to go online.
If you're still having trouble, post here and I'll try to help (though it may not be until the morning).
Actually, I don't know if Lex would be able to top that flip pic, even with new Sonus speakers...
Kevin, Nice Flag picture. I always like those symbolic juxaposition shots.Sim...ball... juuu... ahh... yeah. Whatever. :??

Hey guys, long time no post. Been extremely busy at work. Last week in Florida at a conference, and this Thursday & Friday will be in Atlanta on business. New job is really keeping me wrapped up, with no time for much anything else. I am liking it, but the demands on my time, even at night, gets a little old.
Finally got a good offer on our house for sale, should be closing the last week of May. Went today and made an offer on a house in Fort Worth. Now maybe I can quit the back and forth almost 2 hour drive one way to work. Been spending a lot of time on the road! :driving:
Got a new laptop at work since I have been traveling so much, it sucks going all week without being able to access the internet. Sounds like a lot of you guys have been buying new stuff, hope everyone is enjoying it!
No way to catch up on all the posts, couldn't believe you guys were already half-way through this TTP. So, it I missed anything big, sorry. I hope to at least stay current with you guys now that I have the laptop, so it won't matter when I'm stuck in a hotel room with no 'net.
By the way Mats, the new board looks great! ;x(

Thanks guys. Andrew, yeah, little speakers.
thanks Bing, Greg, Trevster, Eduardo, Pat, I think. ;)
Bing, as to your question. Well, the Grand Prixs do a lot of things right. No doubt about that. But you can't expect a speaker that cost 4K new 3 years ago, with a speaker that cost over 10K new 7-8 years ago. The mids of the Grand Prixs are amazing. Some people say they are candied. Well, maybe, but they sure sound great.
I have not as yet tested fully the mids for comparison. But the highs didn't take to long for evaluation. the Extrema's Esotar tweeters are freekin amazing. The Extrema throw out a much larger more cohesive soundstage than the Grand Prix. More effortless power and dynamics.
Lots of listening and learning to do yet. It will be interesting to set the Grand Prixs up with my integrated tube amp, and compare listening environments. :)

This seminar was mainly about new product releases comming out on the market this year. There is a pretty nice new Lattitude D machine around the corner.... with a 16x10 screen the D800 for example.
Then alot of :blah: about there service model etc. Some of there partners where there too showing of some intressting software solutions so all in all it wasn't a too bad day.

Thanks, guys, on the sports car comments. She's been my baby for many years now, and I have way too much invested in it to get rid of it anytime soon. She would never sell for anything close to what she's worth with all the modifications.
The avatar I found on another forum (BMW) posted by some guy. I have a beagle dog who looks a lot like that, so I thought it was great. Only problem is that it's depicted as a right hand drive car. (okay, besides the problem of showing a dog driving a car)
E: David? I don't think he looks like a beagle. (you'll probably have to reread your post last page to get this joke)
Just got done with my last flight before my checkride, which will probably go Friday. Went really well--instructor said it was the "best air refueling he's ever seen". WOO HOO! Pray I do well on the checkride!

Such a lovely pic of Old Glory I just had to use it again. Besides, I haven't had a chance to upload any new pics lately, and I can't surf for b-a-b-e-s from work safely:

Ok Lex, I don't quite understand what you just said, but you can turn off image loading in your browser, then edit your flip post. Or maybe you need my Stealth(tm) technology. :)
Maybe I'll write some docs for the proxy and package it up so y'all can download it and try it out.

Uh-oh, looks like my jaw's gonna drop when I hit this page from home 8O Thank goodness for Stealth(tm) technology at work. Sometimes being a programmer has its benefits ;)
From the continuing story of Idiots at Work (maybe I should write a book!), I present you this gem:
Paul (his real name, no point in protecting the guilty) comes over with some questions about something. During the course of the conversation he asks me where I got the antique phone, like it belongs in the Smithsonian or something. I'm going huh? :? The only phone in my cubicle is my desk phone, which is just like everyone else's desk phones. Then he said, no, that ancient phone right there. At first I was wondering if he was referring to my tube amp or headphones, but he was clearly implying he was talking about a telephone (note that he said phone, not phones, or cell phone). I say where? He says, literally, "right there under your armpit". Ok, I don't have a phone under my armpit, but on my desk near where my elbow was at that time was the remote for my CD player (a Sony 2 way remote). The idiot thought it was an old fashioned cell phone!
What's funny is the remote does have a flip down panel, so I can easily pretend it's a cell phone. Maybe next time he comes by to ask a question I'll grab the remote, flip open the door and tell him "Excuse me, I have to take a call!" :alol:

Ok, for those who want to try out my Junkbuster stealth proxy you can download it from here (http://kpatz.home.attbi.com/stealth/junkbstr-stealth.zip).
After downloading, unzip it into a folder and then look at the stealth-readme.txt for quick setup instructions. The Junkbuster 2.0 documentation is also included but the stealth features aren't in there, since I added that stuff myself. :)

Such a lovely pic of Old Glory I just had to use it again.
A cousin sent me the same pic via email. Here’s part of what I wrote to her in response:
{soapbox mode on}
Nice shot of our flag. But I wonder if that “special effect” would be as much of an inspiration to US citizens who salute the flag who are Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, Confucian, agnostic or humanist? In culturally diverse Houston, I am personally acquainted with proud Americans who have those faiths or philosophies. It is easy to forget sometimes that we are not just a nation of Christians, especially in time of a war that gets dangerously close to being cast as a battle between two religions instead of as a means to promote freedom for all.
Religious freedom is one of the principles our nation was founded on, and one of the reasons our military defends us against all foes. Interestingly, as the current administration works diligently to break down the historic wall of separation between Church and State, it will very possibly be some of these non-Christian groups that benefit the most from it financially. If the government tries to bend the rules so that doesn’t happen, with some bureaucrat deciding which churches are “worthy” of government money and which are not, then we’ll have the government prescribing religion, and that is unconstitutional (at least the way I read the document).
{soapbox mode off}
Ok, for those who want to try out my Junkbuster stealth proxy you can downlad it from here.
Hey Kev – thanks for sharing. That represents a lot of work and will be quite useful to folks when browsing in “sensitive areas”.
Mats – I hope this comment doesn’t give you any ideas, :>) but I’m sure glad that bouncing-head Steve Martin avatar doesn’t talk. :>)
Gee, I guess if I was your cousin Burke, I wouldn't be sending you anything else. Well, this is one time I am speaking out with a rebuttal to your editorial view of how things maybe should be.
To be honest, I myself am sick and tired of feeling like I have to tip toe around to keep from offending first this, then that special interest group. I like the photo, I'm proud to be an American, and while not actively practicing organized religion, I am a Christian and can appreciate the significance of a photo like that to Christian families of military men and women, and the men and women themselves.
My opinion? If you or anyone else doesn't like the photo or feels somehow personally or religiously offended by it? Then don't look at it or move to another country where Christianity is not the majority religion. But don't expect those of us that do like the photo, to attempt to supress information like this because it somehow offends at least 1 person. That one person or more will have to have a little bit of understanding, that in fact, they aren't the majority, and will have to understand that fact and give the majority some space to freely exist, without fear of inhabitions.

...move to another country where Christianity is not the majority religion...
I did for a year -- to Vietnam, at Uncle Sam's expense. :>) In effect, I served there to help guarantee that all of us would have the right to freely express our views, whether we were in the self-righteous majority or not. But my military service there really opened my eyes to a lot of things, including how arrogant we can be as US Americans. All over the base were signs saying "Foreign Nationals Prohibited...". They were referring to the Vietnamese, whose country we were in, not us. Also, note that we have a large number of members here (on this Forum) who are citizens of countries other than the US, and, while they are probably not offended by our flag, they cannot be expected to "salute" it, either.
For the record, I still get misty eyed when I see the US flag (including the picture of it at the top of the page) and hear the national anthem, without inhibition. But I am also willing to acknowledge that others who do not share my view of things have the right to live here without being forced to participate in any particular expression of faith or patriotism, or being invited to leave the country just because they belong to a group or express a view different from my own. Demographics can change and someday, today's majority may find itself in the minority. At which time, the same principles still apply. It is not a matter of being "politically correct" or having to "tip toe" around other peoples' sensibilities. It is about mutual respect and recognition that freedom is NOT just for the majority.

That's true, they don't have to participate Burke, but they can't by the same token expect to prevent me from participating, believing, demonstrating my passion for something, or any other God given right I have. Just as today's anti-war demonstrators are being heard, we all have a right to be heard, even if that offends someone in the process. That's life in a democracy I think. But I will take it over the alternatives any day. :)

Trevor -- great front and back shots there! After a while, I even realized they are smiling. :>) Sometimes a little bit of cloth over the female form makes it even more intriguing.
How much does that new computer actually weigh? (It sure LOOKS "light weight".) I wish my "portable" could shed a few pounds. (It crushes the scale at just under 10 pounds.) :>) After lugging it around from place to place, I am convinced that notebook machines should be designed for portability, NOT "desktop replacement".
Andrew -- Fine looking plants in your living room. The wooden plant stand looks pretty nice too. :>) Good that you could make the sub blend in so well as "part of the furniture". You have real skill as a woodworker.
Chris -- the way things are going, by the time they get finished rescheduling your check flight, you may qualify as a resident of Oklahoma! :>) (Hope it goes well when it does happen.)

Female Hormones In Beer
Yesterday scientists in the US revealed that beer contains small traces of female hormones. To prove their theory, 100 men were fed six pints of beer each within a one-hour period. It was then observed that 100% of the men gained weight, talked excessively without making sense, became overly emotional, couldn't drive, failed to think rationally, argued over nothing and refused to apologize when wrong.

Kevin, thanks for the DL.. So is this 2 progams combined? Stealth and Junkbuster? Im not really interested in using stealth, more I just want run it to see what your world looks like and admire.. ;) Junkbuster is a GNU-licensed (free) proxy program I downloaded a few years ago - I believe it's still available at www.junkbuster.com. I enhanced it to add the stealth capability. You'll notice I included the source code in the zip so you can see it for yourself (in accordance with the GNU license).
My stealth system involves two programs--the proxy, which is what I put up for download yesterday, and the browser. Each can be used independently of each other. The proxy can block unwanted URLs and will stealth (remove images/fonts/colors, etc.) web pages, and the browser just wraps IE in a nondescript window that auto-hides. I'll put up the browser piece for download (I wrote that in VB) sometime in the next few days.
Lots of stuff to catch up on, but I have a lot to do this morning so I'll come back to it. Later folks... KJP
