Bing you're absolutely right - those Alpha heatsinks rock. I have the P4 version for my system. I like its understated looks and installation was sweet as well - the screw-down method was much better than the spring clip idea, IMHO.
Trevor:
You now hold the crown for PC performance on the Guide!! Enjoy the Barton. Between that and the Vette, you clearly have a need for speed! :)

Ha, good one Trev, I like how you alway come up with good Shee-at! :yesnod:
Jeff, I absolutely love the bolt on Alpha design, it saves from crushing cores on the AMD chip. And have you ever seen a more beautifully made and packaged Heat sink? :nonod:

HS removal is never as freaky stressful as it is with the clip designs. I cut a rectangular hole in my motherboard tray so I'll never have to remove the mobo if the nylon nuts come loose. It's just makes life easier...

At the front near the Kuwait/Iraq border...
You guys are Flipomaniacs :)
Just a short note on the progress of the new Board application...
It's comming along pretty good and most functions are now working.
Things still do do...
Fix the "Mail my a$$" when someone post something somewhere on a thread...
Add personal Icons feature on the member section. Both a preloaded library of pics and a feature to be able to upload your own pic to use. Maybe the preloaded library should contain the "George Babe-aloo's" ? :)
Fix the "Today's new topic's" to actually display Todays new topics...
FAQ and Search still to be re-written for CFBoards 3.0
The whole Admin section of the Forum has to be re-written... nothing done there yet. (This won't stop us to start using the board pretty soon though
Add the "Ban PEPSI" filter
I have a question for you ppl regarding the "Mail my a$$" feature.
The idea is to add one more input when you select to be mailed upon new posts. When you check the "Mail me when..." a radio-button group would show up and you select with 2 options. Mail me right away or Mail me once a day.
To take the load off from the poster who would have to wait for the mailing to be done on the 1'st option before he comes back to the thread again (as it works today) I'm planning on writing a robot that will scan through the system once every 10 minutes or so and check if there are any new posts done and send the mail. Would this delay (approx 10 min) be OK or should the note go out right away ? Any other features that you Flipomaniacs are missing ?
Mats

Wow you guys were posting maniacs last night!
E, glad you finally got your flip in :)
Burke, way to change the subject...the last page sure was a good friday morning wake up call :boobies:
Mats, I don't think a 10min delay would be a problem. Just make sure you make a note of that so people know there is going to be a delay.
The new board sounds kewl!
Got an estimated time for the unveiling?
Sonnie, nice speech :T
Trev got another upgrade 8)

Pat's Page (http://pat.home.mchsi.com)
I would guess it will take another 1 - 2 weeks before I will install it. I have to create some tools to update the current database some. The URL links have changed so any link done in any of the posts referencing another post on the board have to be adjusted to the new URL style.
Mats

Bing, wow, I'm behind the times when it comes to PC technology. PATA, SATA, :?? To me IDE is just something you plug hard drives and CD/DVD drives into :)
Only Bing and Trevor would consider cooling fans to be decorative! All my fans are of the plain black variety, that exist only to blow air. :)
and one for KevinUh, gee, thanks, I'm almost afraid to ask what it is, but I'm sure I'll find out when I get home tonight. 8O If it weren't for my stealth technology I would have to stay off TTP all day at work. 8O The pics don't phase me much but chances are my co-workers/PHBs would notice them on my screen if I didn't have stealth... :E
Mats, cool on the new upcoming features. Maybe George's login should display a random babe-o-rama picture on the screen every time he accesses the guide, just to make sure he continues to have a pulse. :)Kev, sorry I missed it by 2 minutes  Dang you Pat, now I'm going to be 2 minutes off the rest of the day! :??

Morning Gang! :later:
Mats, do what ever is easiest.... I like the Thread response mailer. Could you make it so it will only send 1 email until you have revisited the forums? TTP traffic would bog down my mail server other wise if Isubscribed to the TTP thread.
Anyway, nice job and I'm looking forward to having my own Avatar to load up.
Sonnie, nice read.... I tire of all the anti war sentiments as well. Most of these people demonstrating against the war, really don't understand what is at stake and I feel they are just bandwagoning with a popular opinon. If some terrorist group was responsible for the death or their loved ones, I'm sure they would feel different. And that's all I have to say on that..
Go get'em America, Saddam needs an ass whoopin!

Kevin's poll the other day had me thinking about the Maximum PC Geek Quotient test that me and a bunch of guys from Corning tested for... Most of us were Alpha geeks... I went looking for the test however it's not on line anymore. It was actually a very fun test that tested your knowledge of tech in general, however it was centered around the PC.... Some questions were:
What is the hexadecimal value of pure black?
What is the default font of Windows Desktop?
How many live wires are in Cat-5 cable?
How many devices can fit in a single USB chain?
What is the .1 of Dolby Digital 5.1?
Who is Kevin Mitnick?
Anyway it was a fun test and I though I could find it, but I can't...
I did find this (an older but a gooder) which I thought I would post for posterity;

Good morning from Alabama!
Glad you guys liked the speech.... and I agree Bing, I believe some of the hollywood folks just don't fully understand. I don't believe those that don't understand listen very much to the facts.
Eduardo, I undoubtedly missed your post on the ankle problem. I apologize and hope it heals quickly for you.
Those are some spiffy computers and computer parts you guys are tossing around. Guess I'll stick with my little Dell.
Looks like you've got a plate full Mats..... thanks for the hard work.
Lex, send me some speaker money, will ya? You buy the speakers for me and I'll buy some of those high dollar Cats..... yeah!
Quite interesting survey Kevin.
George, we've had some beautiful weather the last 3-4 days here. 80's every day! But I promise I won't rub it in.

Hey Andrew 45F ????????? We are metric up here...or did you forget?
I'm going to have to avoid TTP for a while (not that I'm in here much any way)...because of this war and my personal feelings about it.. . I'm not going to get into it on a home theater discussion board and there's too much commenting going on in here (I feel), so, see ya for the duration of the war, guys! I'll still be around in the other sections though. :)

Gordon, I understand how you feel, I don't want war either, but here is it and I have to support and respect those that are laying their lives on the line for their country... It's too easy to sit in the comfort of my home and condem, or be impartial when I have not experianced what it's like to be the target of terrorisim, or had to go to the front line for my country. I applaude those brave soldiers putting it on the line just so I can enjoy freedom of thought as well.
My thoughts are with you and our American friends, hope to see you around :)
Bing
Gordon, the war just started, obviously, there will be some comment by people. You certainly don't have to agree with any pro-war sentiment.
Chris is in the military, I think one or two more have been there, so it's obvious, whether they believe in the cause or not, they will support our troops.
Myself, I presented a couple of news bulletins, but other than that, have not had comments. We've had an image or two, and a aircraft joke. I don't think any of that says anyone loves the war.
I've said political messages are best left outside the bounds of HTG, and that does stand. However, these are important world events, agree or not on the cause. We can't just sweep the facts completely under a rug, and live in a vaccum.
So, we will respect your right to stay out of TTP, but to my knowledge, no one here has really even said if they believe in the war or are happy about going. So, I will pretend you didn't express displeasure with the war, as those are personal feelings, again, best left outside TTP and HTG.

Gordon you don't have to come here if you don't want to but I'd miss my winnipeg buddy:) I don't tend to agree with some of the comments either but then that's nothing new  The nice thing about the TTP is that even though we may disagree on matters doesn't mean it has to get in the way of the true sprit of the TTP...i.e. friends just hanging out chatting. Personally I'd rather see us ban all war talk if its going to get in between us but I think we can likely keep it to a minimum and on friendly tones.

I'm going to have to avoid TTP for a while Hopefully it wasn't something I said
Like what Lex and Pr@ said, I try to keep the war talk to a minimum but it's hard to stay out of it completely even here, especially with Chris in the military and everything going on these days. But if requested I will refrain from any/all political/war talk here. Actually if you think about it, it's nice to have a place to go where we can shoot the breeze and not have "war this war that" shoved down our necks.
Whether you're for or against the hostilities we should still show support for those who are risking their lives to protect our country. (we need the flag waving smiley here) :)
Now for a funny pic that will take your mind off of... whatever it is.

Sorry you feel this way Gordon. No offense mean't to anyone on my part, unless of course someone doesn't support our service men and women, which I certainly hope this isn't the case with you.
I too hate war... can't stand it... don't want it... but if it's necessary to protect us and our children (and future children), then I have to trust our leaders and give them and our service men and women my full support. I would never alienate them. I don't see anything wrong with showing that support. I firmly believe we should show our support, although we may not like war. My father served (Army), I served (Nat'l Guard), and my brother (ex-Marine now Coast Guard) was in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait during the Gulf War with bullets whizzing by his head. I can assure you my brother did not want to be in a war and we certainly didn't want him there, but when he was called he had to go and it was my American responsibility to support him.
We definitely haven't limited TTP to home theater discussion as we can read the majority of the post in TTP are not related to HT.

Sonnie, thank you for your post. I enjoyed reading that.
Gordon, I completely understand your feelings. I would VERY MUCH regret it if anyone felt the need to leave TTP or any other discussion forum based on discussion threads though. I think we can all be adults and use care in conversations.
For everyone, I'd just like to say that I am very proud of my job and what I do, but never want that to cause a problem with someone else. I very much enjoy being a pilot and the fun of flying well, and take a deep pride in serving my country and working towards securing peace and freedom for others I esteem higher than myself. However, there are definitely aspects of my profession that are regrettable and completely devoid of fun, frivolity, and enjoyment.
I very much appreciate the support that people give to our armed forces, regardless of their personal political views of larger world events. But I would never take this for granted or flaunt this to another, and by and large avoid expressing my own political opinions on military and international issues unless solicited. (okay, so I'm more expressive with opinions on other issues) I would rather avoid alienating a potential friend, that, outside of a few specific topics, I can generally talk freely with. With some people, I have found that the military as a whole is too much of a painful subject to discuss, and instead focus on other issues to talk about. There definitely is so much more to life.
War brings death, pain and misery to so many people, in so many ways not immediately evident. I think everyone would agree with that. While directly impacting the military and political forces of countries, it also seeps into every other area of society--religion, economics, commerce, social interactions, etc. Just look at how it's become an issue with the few of us!!! There is nothing to glorify about war itself. No pride or satisfaction to be taken there. Does that mean that war should never be entered into?
That is one question I'll choose to leave unaswered for thought and won't answer and expound upon myself in this forum.
As always, I wish peace and God's hand with you all.

What's your 3D Mark score..
I think bottom line it comes down to the graphics accelerator and amount of ram on the cards that make the real difference or at least have the most significant impact on how fast a system runs.
What makes the PC hobby so exciting is the fact that it progresses forwards so quickly, creating new devices and other upgrades to be constantly available.
I have had a blast comparing and analyzing new parts in the last couple of months. To think that my computer was brand new a year ago and pretty respectable with some of the best components avaialble at the time.. There have been a huge amount of changes in the last year that my system was now at the very bottom end of the scale performance wise VS the peices that can still be purchased.
The cost of adding a few parts to bring it up to date was minimal compared to investing in an entire brand new system.
It's been a lot of fun..
See..Bing is a bad influence on us whan it comes to computers..Lex too! ;)

Bing: Thanks for the cpu advise. I ended up with just one 120G HD for now. I plan on having 2 cd drives, one is a dvd/cdrw and the other is a dedicated cdrw. I figure it'd be easier to go from cd to cd. Say have you had any experience with removable drive bays? I saw one at London Drugs and remembered that another friend was using that a while back. Seems like a cheap way to do a backup onto a HD. Oh the Antec case fan is on sale, but for 17.98, but I saw a trilight fan that I think I'll get.
Just dl the pi program, my result on the laptop is:
64k: 5 seconds
1M: 4m 54s
Laptop is a PIII 1G with 128 M ram. Though it is reporting only 112?
How about we try for 32M?

Hey Paul sorry about the fans, I seen they were back to $17.98, however there was awhile back they were around $14.
I have not use a removable drive bay, but I have often though of having one just for backup. I like the idea that the HD sees less duty hours of operations, so the backup drive should last longer.
Sorry about the size (I edited it), I did some reading and it stated 1M (units) is a good test size
Mine tells me I have 1073 when it should be 1024 Mb.
Just ran the test again..
64k = 1sec
1M = 1Min, 1sec

Lex, I'm curious to see how your dualie will do in Super Pi... run the test...
Paul, Andrew may have nailed it.. It's 16 mb short, so it probably the shared memory of the system... Good job Andrew, another world saved.

2519 my score with a Ge-force 3 64 meg ram graphics card.
Apparently, my G3 must be a bottleneck for these high shootin scores you guys are logging.

Humm, that seems low for even a Geforce 3 equiped machine Lex.. With your CPU and Video card your system should be logging in the 7-8K range..... With my GF3 an a 1400 Mhz Athlon I was in the 7100 range.
Andrew, You ran a 32M test for nearly 2 hours?? 8O
What was your 1M score?? That's considered the standard test.

I had heard there was some incompatibilities between the Asus 8200 and the dual board Bing, not sure how true that is, but maybe that's it. For normal use, it seems to work great, but put it through hi-res graphics tests, and it doesn't seem to fair to well. In fact, it locked up 2 or 3 times before I even made it through it.

Well I was in Future Shop today and they had a wireless Netgear (MR814) router on their open box table that looked like it had all the parts so I cut them a deal on it and took her home. I had it installed and running in under 5 minutes (totat) and its great. Its loaded with some very cool featuers such as content blocking per IP address. I can even set scheduals when people can log on or when the filters are on. It also has a detachable anntena so I can upgrade that to a higher gain later if I need be.

Doug's 3D Mark scores may not be that much better then a single CPU if the application can't take advantage of both CPU's and since its mainly a reflection of which video card you have it may not care about dual CPU's

Just to see what this poor slob's PC can do (P3/800, 512 MB RAM, Win2K) - Super PI:
16K: 1s
32K: 2s
64K: 4s
128K: 12s
256K: 29s
512K: 1:10
1M: 2:36
I ran everything up to 256K a second time and got slightly faster times the 2nd time, maybe because I wasn't doing other things at the same time. I guess I need a raise so I can afford a faster PC!
I downloaded 3DMark2001 but can't run it until I install a newer version of DirectX. Maybe tomorrow.

Goes to show the Dual channel DDR and the memory controller of the Nforce 2 board helps out with actual memory bandwith. Actually, I am running XP1900s, which translates to MP-16s I think.
I never liked that souped up rating system, if it's a dang 1.6 CPU, say it's a 1.6, not a 1.9!
But really, I don't care so much about test numbers. What I care about is system stability, and overall performance, and my dual Asus, outside of the hard drive going down, has been rock solid. I knew the graphics card wasn't up to snuff, but I didn't feel like spending the dough on a new G4, really. I'm not really even into the pretty stuff like Bing, and now Trevor is, though my dual stainless case is pretty sharp. I guess if I had the time, maybe I might get into aesthetics more, but when I get a system together, I just slap it together, and get to work. :)
Speaking of, I just gutted my home theater computer tonight. I couldn't get things to work out right, so I think I am selling the case, maybe with another mobo in it, maybe just the case ready for mobo. I've got one more computer case to sell too, so maybe the standard tower would be better to sell with the Asus board I won't be using. But I am keeping my 333 with the what, 2700 memory? I know it's the good stuff. :)
Or I might keep the HT case and build another one later on, but for now, I've lost interest, and don't have time to play with it to get the thing working right. I'd hoped to make sort of a souped up TiVo out of it, but I couldn't even get that working right, why, I have no idea. As far as playing DVDs through it, I found it to just be more trouble than it was worth, and my Elites actually performs better in my system.

Well, when Trevor keeps putting up pictures like that how can I stay away?
I have to apologize for putting everyone on the defensive on Friday. It was mostly unecessary to do so. I had a really crappy day at work...this war thing has me pretty bummed out...and probably the thing eating away at me more than anything is that I found out my aunt (actually my dad's only sister...9 boys 1 girl ) has lung cancer.
Guys...don't smoke...can't say it any plainer than that. If you do smoke, please try to quit...you'll live longer.
This is the 3rd person I've known personally to contract lung cancer from being a long time smoker. It's a shitty way to go...trust me on this guys. :(
Anyways Saturday came...the weather was fantastic 15C. Didn't do a stich of work (work work or housework)...turned off the tv and played with my kids...that was all the perspective I needed. I'm sorry I caused all the fuss.
On a different note...I went to this closeout sale and they had these GE FRS radios new in the package for 18.00 ea regular 40 CDN at any other store. 3.2 Kilometer range, backlight, 14 channels 28 subchannels, paging, I had to pick them up. Its a glorified walkie-talkie with a lot of range. My wife and I tried them last night while shopping. :D How geeky are we. That said for the first time I didn't wander around walmart for an hour looking for my wife.
She commented that she's going to need a utility belt ala Batman for all the gear she carries in her purse now...palm,FRS, graphing calculator, faceplate for the car stereo etc... ;)
Course I saw the downside to it. I ran into another store and while she was waiting the in the car all I kept hearing was " are you done?" "Are you coming out?" and that was solved with one press of the power switch. ;)

1m 16s on Super Pi to 1M hmmmm time to overclock...gotta buy a chipset fan first...then look out  MSI gives you a pretty cool utility for overclocking called fuzzy logic...it trys to safely determine what you can overclock to...haven't tried it but it is a cool looking GUI (looks like a racing wheel). I know my sk-7 is up to the task....maybe I'll sell my generic DDR RAM and get Corsair PC2700 instead....sell of the XP1800+ thoroughbred and go for the Athlon XP 2700+ instead (Barton is too pricey)....

Yeap Trev, you need one, better "ORDER" one
But really, I don't care so much about test numbers. What I care about is system stability, and overall performance...
http://www3.sk.sympatico.ca/fung1/blahblah.gif Yeah, I don't care either, it's just a perk ;)
I agree Lex, I too hate that "Performance" rating, call a spade a spade.... I suppose it would be a tough sell to the un-informed that a 1533 mhz (1800 XP) actually calculates more instructions per cycle than a 1.8 Intel P4. The only person it confuses is the hardware geeks that care about actual clock speeds and understands the performance ratings... Ah well thats what Google is for.
Anyways Lex, sounds like you have alot of stuff you can play with and in the end that's what it's all about (for me anyways). Sure PCs are a tool first and formost be it video editing, photographic, word processing or gaming, but some times ya gotta tune and polish the piano.
Looking good Mats, can't wait for the Avatar thang...

Gordon, sorry to hear the bad news of your Aunt.
We have a set of those FRS radios as well, and they are absolutely indispensable. We were on holidays in Banff and they were handy for my Daughters and I could go our own ways yet still stay in touch of where to meet, etc on the busy streets. PCs are a tool first and formost be it video editing, photographic, word processing or gaming, but some times ya gotta tune and polish the piano.
I agree..I had been running benchmarks since 1997.
Quake 2 and Unreal Framerates was the biz back then..
Plus my dual SLI Monster II 3DFX 8 Meg Video Cards was the cream of the crop.
Having a powerful video card does take the stress off the CPU and is great for running 3D demos' and Internet video ,,well pretty much any video at a smooth visual with no cracking or slowdown..That is what's important to me. :yesnod:

Glad your computer has been stable for you.
My peviuos MB , the Abit seemed to lock up about twice a week.
This new ASUS seems to be (knock on wood ) more stable as I have not had one lock-up yet.
My system may have some zip to it right now,,Likely thats because of a clean OS install and very little on my hard drives right now..

Too Funny, Trev's still looking for cars to buy ;x( ;x(
This is a book I got for Christmas from my niece Amy
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/1840005068.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
The evolution of the hi-Fi industry since World War II has been astonishing. The speed of technological innovation, from portable radios to MP3 players, has been matched only by the proliferation of designs that have sprung up in response to it. Sound Design traces the development of hi-fi design, examining, decade by decade, over 100 seminal pieces of post-war audio equipment, including the Bush radios produced in the 1950s; the Bang & Olufsen systems of the 1970s and 80s; the Sony Walkman of 1979; and today's MP3 and DVD players. A specification is provided for each, with a history of the design and its place in the development of the audio industry. Special features on the music and fashion of the time also high-light the ongoing relationship between hi-Þ design and popular culture. The sheer range of high-quality audio design gathered together for the first time - including work by such major figures as Philippe Starck and Dieter Rams - makes Sound Design an essential guide for all hi-fi and design enthusiasts
It's a beautiful book chocked full of pictures of all types of equipment from all eras.
It's a real blast to walk down memory lane seeing some of the stuff that I dreamed of owning as a young lad.

I'm running the PI test on my laptop now, it should fare better on that one since it has a 1G processor instead of 800 MHz. Update: 2:12 for PI 1M on my laptop. A few seconds faster than my desktop. Still not like Trev and Bing's screamers (do the lights dim when you boot them up?)

Andrew,,The new Rotel has Andrew written all over it.
I chose Denon and will actually keep my receiver for as along as possible..Don't forget I also have the Denon upgraded to the 5803.:T
My system makes me go :E everytime I watch a movie.
It took a long time to get there and I am totally satisfied with it..100%
Before I had invested in the Denon, I was was seriously looking at the Rotel gear..Especially their amps before I went with Parasound..This is still when the Rotel gear was black and not Silver.
Their gear was awesome at the time..
The only reason I went with PArasound was since Audio Warehouse actually stocked the huge Parasound amps..
Audio Express the only Rotel dealer at the time only brough in their smaller amps..They could have brough tin the larger amps ,but would not do so..Chickens they were. They lost a sale because of it.
Bing,,At least once per week , I go to visit the car lots to have a look at the new cars..That has always been a pastime for me.
I usually go to the new Auto Mall..Just hadn't been to Merlin for ages..It was a pleasant surprise to see their selection when I did..
I have been thinking of selling the Intrepid , so as to downgrade to a car that is more efficient on gas for my trips to work 40KM's per day.
This woulld help to offset the cost of Tracey driving the R/T.
We spend average $250-$300 a month on gasoline..Just getting too expensive. Think of all the upgrades I could have instead.. :yesnod:

Sorry about that Kevin, I'll see if I can find a smaller image source.
Kool on the Plasma. What are your thoughts on the plasma? I find they look grainy or not as crisp as say an LCD. But parts of it are cleaner than a CRT. It a mixed bag... I like the size and convienence of a RPCRT, however they always tend to have this pixel crawl or something that a Direct view CRT doesn't have. LCD's look crisp, but they have that screen door look. Plasmas have a blurrier look as well as a slight screen door. What would be Idea for me right here right now would be a 57" DLP TV for around $5K Canadian.

Unless Available is extremely low, don't worry about the memory figures. Real Memory is the total physical RAM in your computer. Available is how much is free, and Allocated is the amount of memory SuperPI allocated to use for its calculations (the more digits you compute, the more memory it needs). I suppose these numbers are useful in case you run low on memory and have to start paging out memory to virtual (page/swap file) which would slow down the calculation.

Can't remember the price for the model shown, which is the flagship. We decided not to bring that in, but have all the models below it. The model right below that one is a cool $12K Canadian. For some reason I think the one you pictured is $18, but can't remember for certain. Amazing speakers, both in terms of build and sound quality.

LIGHT RED ALERT
My computer is still working fine.
However on my desk top, my icons now have a black box around them. They used to be super imposed over whatever desktop background I had running.
Also,,My desktop background that I use form pictures taken from the digital camera do not fill the entire screen like they always did before.
All I did different was download Quicktime (now deleted)
and downloaded and installed the new drivers for my Geforce video card. I had to delete my previous drivers before installing the new ones.

Please be aware that if the fan is not of sufficient cooling capacity, you could burn the chip up. Also, you do know to put contact grease on the chip contact points, yes?

Trev, sounds like your Active Desktop got turned off, or you just have your desktop color set to black. As for the picture not filling the screen, try setting it to Stretch on the desktop properties.
EDIT: Check this Knowledgebase article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305117). You may need to turn off active desktop to make your icons appear correct. I don't have XP so I can't confirm.

Well Trev, overclocking is not a matter of just dropping it in and then setting a speed. Well yes it is, but you have to be sure your system runs stable at it's intend speed before you start increasing the FSB.
Right now FSB increases is the only way to overclock an Athlon that I know of as the CPU is multiplier locked. The Nforce was suppose to allow multiplier changes, however reviews I have read stated Asus did not allow this in the A7N8X, you can try it though. Work in small increments, what ever you do.
Install the CPU, once you power on enter the BIOS. Go to advanced tab and set CPU External Freq to 166 Mhz. With the Memory Frequency set to SPD, it will auto detect and set the system to sychronous operation. This is the default settings for your 2500XP and 166 Mhz (333 DDR) FSB.
Now to over clock, you can try adjusting the CPU's multiplier with CPU Frequency Mulitple. This adjusted value X FSB speed = clock speed. So in the case of your 2500 XP it's factory clock speed is 11x166 = 1833 Mhz (rounding applied) You can try adjusting both parameters of multiplier and or FSB to see what will run for you. I would just try uping the FSB at first to something like 170-175 and seeing how it runs. You may have to adjust your CPU voltages incrementally a little at a time to get things stable.
Summary:
To adjust Multiplier use CPU Frequency Multiple
To adjust FSB use Memory Frequency
To adjust CPU voltage use CPU Vcore setting
To adjust Memory Voltage use DDR Reference Voltage
That's about all I can offer at this time with out having my A7N8X up and running to determine what works and what doesn't, but give those a try....
Good Job Kevin, I was thinking something along the same lines in the stretch, but didn't think of the active desktop.

http://www3.sk.sympatico.ca/fung1/thanku.gifThanks Trev, your welcome to use those Smileys anytime...
The drivers may not have the Overclocker by default and it may be a function of Gainwards Drivers... You have a few options available to you.
1) Look on Gainwards site to see if they have the newest drivers that are the same set as the Detonator reference drivers.
2) Go to 3D Guru (http://download.guru3d.com/) and download the NVHardpage tweaker. With my Nvidia cards I always used reference drivers and NvHardpage.
OC'ing is relatively easy, but it takes a bit of work to determine what is stable. It takes lots of adjustments and many reboots, but basically it's all in the multiplier and FSB settings. Like I said, try the FSB first 166 is default, try 170-175. If that works, you can push it until your system locks up or BSOD's then back off on the last adjustment. Once that is done you know what the maximum your FSB is capable of at the the default (locked?) multiplier.
Next See if the A7N8X allows CPU multiplier adjustments. I updated your BIOS to the latest version and Asus may have fixed that lock from the original Bios that did not allow multiplier adjustment (I hope so). The default is 11, try 11.5 or 12. remember that this adjustment is X the FSB, so if you have a high FSB setting, you may not have a stable system if you try to adjust the mulitplier as well. Most times it is favorable to actually decrease your Multiplier setting, even lower than default (something like 9.5, 10 or 10.5) and then crank the crap out of your FSB. Check in Asus Probe Information/CPU to see if the multiplier setting took, because the board may just boot and default to 11 regardless of what you set it to. That is the approch I would take anyway. When your ready to try it, give me a call on the phone if you'd like or I can even come over to play.

Lex, I kinda like those clips more than the standoffs. Those standoffs can cause a lot of problems at times. How hard is it to just snap'em in?? http://www3.sk.sympatico.ca/fung1/drunk.gif especially with the removable motherboard tray http://www3.sk.sympatico.ca/fung1/drunk.gif

Wonder if I can get someone to try it on the mainframe :heh:You might be surprised at how slow the CPU speed is on mainframes. I don't know what MF your company has but at my last job where I worked on an IBM 3090, it had 6 processors, each of which was roughly equivalent to a 286 in performance. It also had a total of 256 MB of physical RAM and about 200 GB of disk storage (spread out over many physical drives). The strength of mainframes is the ability to handle lots of I/O devices, not crunch numbers fast.
Granted this was 8 or so years ago but still PCs were at Pentium levels then and now I have a PC at home that is probably 1000 times faster, has twice the RAM and for a couple hundred bucks could have more storage than the mainframe I worked on. 8O And Windows will use it all too.

You didn't have it shipped to work? You could have it plugged in and going now. :)
You won't believe what Heather said last night... I had put up a picture of Misha on my desktop, and I have a pic of Patches on my laptop. Heather said, now we need to get another computer so we can put Jambo up on the desktop! 8O I wonder if she would actually let me...
Probably not, can't afford it until I get a real job anyway

Here's some tasteless Iraq jokes...I hid them in a spoiler tag (which isn't shown on the button menu mats?) in case you'd rather not read them.
What is the Iraqi air force motto?
I came, I saw, Iran.
Have you heard about the new Iraqi air force exercise program?
Each morning you raise your hands above your head and leave them there.
What's the five-day forecast for Baghdad?
Two days.
What do Miss Muffet and Saddam Hussein have in common?
They both have Kurds in their way.
What is the best Iraqi job?
Foreign ambassador.
Did you hear that it is twice as easy to train Iraqi fighter pilots?
You only have to teach them to take off.
How do you play Iraqi bingo?
... F-16 ... B-52 ... F-18 .... A-10
What is Iraq's national bird?
Duck.
What do Saddam Hussein and General Custer have in common?
They both want to know where the hell those Tomahawks are coming from!
Why does the Iraqi navy have glass bottom boats?
So they can see their air force.

Huh? That was weird. A double post with no firewall hiccup or anything.
CFBoards 3.0 current stand...

I got my computer today as well! Now I've got some serious work to do. I'm formatting the drive right now and will install my win2k, and all the rest of the programs. I'll be heading out in about half an hour so I've got pretty much all of tomorrow booked to really configure my new system.
Yesterday I went over to audition some new speakers that a cousin's brother inlaw just bought. These were some sweat looking speakers, the Gershman Opera Sauvage.
http://www.gershmanacoustics.com/pics/opera_withgrill.jpg
Turns out he dropped some big coin to add a Sony SACD1, those speakers, some kind of line/power conditioner/ and mega buck speaker cables.
Now I was auditioning with my cousin and his friend. Now these guys are serious tweakers. They were talking about upgrading the interconnects, speaker cables, and power cables, and talking about doing so in the $$$ range. I just about fainted.
Turns out my cousin is looking to buy a pair of these:
http://www.focal-jmlab.fr/gb/home/utopiabe/images/signature.jpg
These things only list for like $70k!
But the cool thing I'm going to go over and listen.
Lex: I need you to build up a super duper set of interconnects and hype them like hell and put a price of like $20K, so I can sell them for you. I'll just take a 10% commission. ;lx
Gotta go. :later: Bye to all and have a great night!

Hye guys, just had a chance to post... Need to do some clean up, so I'll be brief...
First day of work was a bit uneventful, It was basically orientation and learing the lay of the land. The UofS campus is one big campus and it is a labrynth of buildings and ITS closets.
My work areas clean and the team seems like nice guys, that's about all a guy can ask for... It's too early too judge at this time, however my main focus will be doing my job and doing a good job. One day at atime I guess. I can't say I would want to do this any longer than my term at this time. Today only served further notice of how much I missed my old job.. I realize I can't cling to that notion, for it's gone, deal... But I can't help but miss it...that's all.
At this time I have to say unqualified... MEH
Excellent on the new lap top Andrew. :T

How's everybody doing? I was up late last night working on some things (ya know, side jobs in a vain attempt to get my income closer to where it should be...) another round of ProntoPro updates plus Trev's web site.
I got this email this morning:
Having a Bad Day?
There was a case in one hospital's Intensive Care ward where patients always died in the same bed, on Sunday morning, at about 11 A.M., regardless of their medical condition. This puzzled the doctors and some even thought that it had something to do with the supernatural. No one could solve the mystery as to why the deaths occurred around 11 A.M. on Sundays.
So a team of experts was assembled to investigate the cause of the incidents. The next Sunday morning, a few minutes before 11 A.M., all doctors and nurses nervously waited outside the ward to see for themselves what the terrible phenomenon was all about. Some were holding wooden crosses, prayerbooks and other holy objects to ward off the evil spirits. Just when the clock struck 11:00... Pookie Johnson, the part-time Sunday sweeper, entered the ward and unplugged the life support system so that he could use the vacuum cleaner.
Still Having a Bad Day?
The average cost of rehabilitating a seal after the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska was $80,000. At a special ceremony, two of the most expensively saved animals were being released back into the wild amid cheers and applause from onlookers. A minute later, in full view, a killer whale ate them both.
Still think you are having a bad day?
A woman came home to find her husband in the kitchen shaking frantically, almost in a dancing frenzy, with some kind of wire running from his waist towards the electric kettle. Intending to jolt him away from the deadly current, she whacked him with a handy plank of wood, breaking his arm in two places. Up to that moment, he had been happily listening to his Sony Walkman.
STILL think you're having a bad day?
Two animal rights protesters were protesting the cruelty of sending pigs to a slaughterhouse in Bonn, Germany. Suddenly, all two thousand pigs broke loose and escaped through a broken fence, stampeding madly. The two hopeless protesters were trampled to death.
What?! STILL having a bad day?
Iraqi terrorist Khay Rahnajet didn't pay enough postage on a letter bomb. It came back with "return to sender" stamped on it. Forgetting it was the bomb, he opened it and was blown to bits.
There now, feeling better......................
No. I'm still working in this hell hole...

Well I'll be absent tomorrow. I have to go back to the hospital for an upper GI Endoscope. Yeah. that tube down the throat thing so they can look inside my stomach. The stomach's been feeling good so hopefully they won't find anything negative. Anyway, they do this while you are awake, though they do make you a little dopey. The part I don't like is the gargle and and spray that makes the throat numb.So basically they're just checking to make sure the repair job took.
Gordon, hope all goes well with your family.

Lex, nice picture of your secondary PC.. It's amazing when I look at your newer model of Lian-Li to see all the updates that have been applied from the factory. Updates that modders have been doing to the cases from the start. It goes to show Lian-Li listens closeley to the customer and modding community. Looking good :T
Nice flips Kevin and Trev,
Kevin is that your kitty?
Trev are those your air bags that when off?
Hope your doing OK George, best wishes!
Paul the first set of speakers remind me of half a canoe. The second set look like a Klone of Jon Marshes :W
Trev
Andrew, my PC is actually a 2300 XP :hump:
Everyone else, Have a great day-Aye... :icecream:

Kevin is that your kitty? Nope, none of my kitties would fit in that cup! 8O I got that pic from http://www.ratemykitten.com, the "hotornot" of kittydom. ;)
BTW, good luck with the new job. Now it's MY TURN! One of the other programmers just gave his notice, he found another job, so now when is it my turn!?

Mats, keep up the good work with CFBoards. BTW you need to add the new pop-up emoticon link to the edit page. ;)
Won't spend more time on this old CFB version... Just added the view of the Avatar as a teaser :)

brought the laptop to work today so I could install some more software while I'm working...got most of it done now though. I managed to get Unreal Tournament installed on the van ride to work ;)
I'm a little dissapointed with some aspects of this laptop and sort of wish I'd been able to get the model "up" from it since it would have given me the digital out, RGB video out and a serial port. I tried to get the pronto to work though the port replicator last night and it wasn't finding it so hopefully I can get that resolved otherwise I'm going to have to spend more money and buy a keyspan converter

Kev, if I remember correctly, Georgeous George was one of those early "fake" wrestlers.
