Oh sh*t Trevor, not good, not good. You need to press EBAY IMMEDIATELY. Do more than reply to, seek out customer service numbers, everything, ask Pl@.

Gentlemen, I hated to bark, but something happened over in Club Rotel that prompted it. When someone asks directly about a forum sponsored product and says they want to support the forum, I better damn well not see competing product recommendations. I'm gonig to go freekin ballistic! Our advertisers are all that keeps our doors open, I want EVERYONE to understand that. If someone is good enough to want to support a sponsor, we cannot swey them away from that product unless it's a total pos, which we know, not many of our sponsors sell. :)

Trev- Actually, the same thing happened to me with E-bay a while ago, but nothing changed. I think that will happen when somebody tries to sign up using your handle and it told that it already exists so they need to choose another one. But they REALLY want your handle, so they try to reset your password. They can't though--all that it will do is send an e-mail to your E-mail account that you have on record, as it did. (at least I think so) Still not a bad idea to check it out.

Doug/Mats- Sorry to hear about troubles with posters. One of the reasons that I've enjoyed this forum more than others is that the admins didn't have to crack down and impose discussion restrictions, so I hope people don't change that for you.

Trev, right click on your desktop to bring up the display properties window. Select the Appearance tab and then select Effects button. Check the box that states "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" Click on the tiny arrow and select Clear type fonts. That should help somewhat. If this still is not good enough for you, maybe try selecting the Settings tab in display properties, under the General tab change the font size DPI from the default 96 DPI to something like 125 or something bigger than 96. Experiment to see what you like. Adjusting this keeps the screen resolution at the same size that you have selected, but it resizes the text so it's not a small and if you will "Blurry"

That or maybe try setting you monitor's resolution to 1024x768

I have been planing one such a system for quite some time. I even have a Lian-Li PC65 that I have pre modded for H20.. I just ran out of interest (for the time being) Now that somebody gave me this new Mobo...

Thanks guys on the little advertiser support thing. I wont' be running another message of this type in the future. It's now in the rules, that if you post off the primary topic, your post can be deleted without notice. Hey wait, that's all of TTP! LOL.

Just kidding. But if someone asks about Adire drivers specifically, bringing up Radio Shack is not on topic. Yes, this rule will be enforced closer for advertisers. IMO, as it should be...

No wide-scale shooting yet. Many people do forget, though, that Iraq has been shooting at UN coalition airplanes EVERY SINGLE time they enforce the UN Northern and Southern No-fly zones for the past 12 years. That is no eggageration. It is only by the grace of God that we have not had an aircraft hit after all this time.

I still pray for a peaceful resolution. Time's up to see.

Well Buddy... I'll walk you through it if you want. It would be an awesome display in your case; however H2o cooling in a PC isn't something to be taken lightly. It needs to be carefully planned and integrated into the case to minimize troubles that can be associated with it. :spit:

While H20 historically was a quieter solution than a Heat sink fan cooler, these days the heat sinks are so good that the DIN is negligible depending on the fan coupled with the heat sink. H20 still requires a fan to cool off the radiator, there are still the power supply fans and then there is the added noise and vibration of the pump. In the end a well designed air cooled system can be almost, if not just as quiet as a H20 cooled system, in fact the loudest part of my current case is the Hard drives spinning at 7200 RPM.

Now where the H20 systems really come in is in cooling efficiency. Water has great heat transfer properties so if you’re planning on doing some insane overclocks, H20 is a good alternative. The question that needs to be raised is, for the price of this water cooling system, is it more cost effective to buy this system and a mid price CPU and hope to overclock the crap out of it? Or is it cheaper to just buy the Fastest CPU currently available and over clock that with standard air cooling and face less hassles of a water system? Hard to say for Overclocking is not a guaranteed science. However cost effectiveness has never been an issue for you so I would say why not. For me I struggle with this question other than I just want it because it's cool and extreme, however I want the top performance for my hard spent cash, so coolness aside, I would take the faster system be it air or water cooled.

General the H20 system works just like the cooling system in your car. Cool water from the radiator is pumped through the water block attached to the CPU, transferring the heat away from the block. This water is then passed to the Video card block (if also H20 cooled) and then to the radiator. Most of the heated water is stripped of its heat by making a few passes through the radiator and with help of the fan; it is brought back down to near ambient temperatures. The cooled water is then sent back to the pump in a continuous process, this is what is known as a Sealed System. They are generally low maintenance, but do require the bleeding of air from time to time. Filling can be a pain with this type of system as well. The radiator should be place near the back or top of the PC blowing air and heat away from the case.

Another type of system operates in the same manner except a reservoir is added so filling of the system is easily accomplished. This reservoir is generally added before the pump so any water collected there can be purged of bubbles in line. The reservoir inlet cascades the water down to the water line allowing air built up in the system to be removed, while the outlet is at the bottom of the reservoir feeding the pump. This is a very nice solution but you still have to be cautious with spills and for this to work properly the reservoir should be placed at the highest point of the system. Needless to say you should never tip you PC on the side with this type of system.

Another concern is you have to watch for is bio matter build up in a water system such as fungus, so a good water treatment is recommended. Mineral deposits are also a concern but minimized with distilled water. The system should be perodically flushed and fresh coolant added. Be prepared to accept that leaks are very possible, remembering that water and electronic components don't mix well. A relay should be wired in to start the pump automatically when ever you start the PC. Apperently some pumps such as magnetic drive pumps don't like to be shut down so this should factor into the design.

Now on the up side as I have already mentioned, it is a system that does continue to add value for you can keep overclocking the crap out of those mid priced CPU's and the difference in added cost is probably less than the top line CPU. Put another way, an Athlon 3000XP is currently $900 (for sake of argument). A 2500XP is $295; add the $420 H20 system and you’re at $715. It's still cheaper than the top line CPU and realistically, you could get the 2500XP to perform at the same level of the 3000XP with the water, however it's not guaranteed. And then in 5 months the 3000XP will be priced at $400, or some ridiculously lower price than what you paid or didn't pay depending on which way you went. If you went with water, you could then just get that NOW lower priced 3000XP CPU and overclock that for all it worth maybe matching the top line 3500XP CPU, so a H20 system could pay for itself but lessening the depreciation of buying a top line CPU. But If I had your cash I wouldn’t be overclocking the mid priced CPUs, I would be overclocking the top line CPUs, because that’s just the way I am.... I just don’t have your cash. You decide…

The Asus mobo has a thermal shut down so if you should experience a pump failure, the board will shut down the system before your CPU fries itself, so no worries there. Given the hassles of water cooling, I would still do it just because I think its uber cool and it more stuff to play with. Others couldn't be bothered and I can appreciate that.

There you have it, if you need a hand setting it up, I would be more than happy to help you, besides I owe you a few hours of tech support anyway ;)

xx) xx) Morning folks! OSIT xx) xx)

I haven't had much time lately to actually READ people's posts and respond to them, so I'll attempt to do so now...

Sonnie: We haven't seen Sweet Home Alabama yet but Heather wants to so it'll probably be our next rental.

Chris: Hopefully this war will be brief and effective. Find Saddam and pals, and get them out. Other than that, I don't have much to say other than my prayers going out to the troops stationed over there. BTW, that C-17 is a cool looking plane. :T

As for the TV in the bathroom, the way I would do it is, mount it in a wall that is adjacent to another room, and have a plexiglass or similar "window" that keeps the moisture out. The TV "hole" would be open to the adjacent room so it wouldn't be affected by moisture.

Trevor has a new Bing-i-fied computer! :-y Maybe someday I'll build a box like that. Probably not for quite a while though, at least until my job/income situation stabilizes, and/or my Micron craps out. Oh yeah, congrats on 4000+ posts! And IMHO water cooling is cool but probably more trouble then it's worth. I always thought water cooling meant you seal off the openings in the PC case and fill it with water!

Bing, you got a job! Temporary, but still a job nonetheless. Now it's MY TURN!!!!! Of course we've been saying that for over 2 years now. I need interviews, DESPERATELY! What do I have to do, bribe the HR departments? Include a certified check with my resume? Sheesh... maybe I should at least include a virus so they have a reason to contact me!

Trev, sounds like someone used the "Forget your password?" link on Ebay with your username. It sends you that email as confirmation. If you don't respond, nothing will happen, though you may want to change your password to something more secure!

Lex, we have rules here!? 8O  Good work in keeping the riffraff in line. At least we have great sponsors here, not like some forums.

And as for me, time to pretend to work, so I'll be back later!

Hey Lex, was it the "digital cables" thread in Club Rotel that prompted your post by any chance? I was just wondering, because the original poster did say "Any comments on the different cables in your systems please," which to me would open the discussion up to whatever cables people are using, not necessarily just Cats. It would be like posting a thread that reads something like:I'm looking for a digital coax cable. I've been looking at the Cat products but were wondering what else is out there so I can make an informed decision.I see nothing wrong in a case like that. Of course if someone posted a thread asking specifically about Cats and someone jumped in about Monster then I can see your point. :)

Just IMHO and curiosity, hopefully not killing the cat, or CAT :)

OK, this has got to be the cutiest thing I have seen in a long while, and it is mine.

Tori made this coolest alligator for me and gave it to me on Sunday when I arrived at Trev's. The alligator is about 5&1/2 feet long and made up of about 10 segments of paper, it was bigger than Tori as she attempted to hold it up to show me. The amount of detail is amazing as the body isn't just taped together in a edge to edge fashion, she actually simulated how an alligators body is curved and went to great lengths to create that. As well note the detail of the birds on the alligators back, "These are to help keep the alligator clean" as I was told by Tori... I'm touched that this sweet little girl went to all that work just for me....

Trev, you are one lucky dad and you should be very proud of Tori, I know I certainly am!

I'm going to go out on a limb and comment on the advertising issue. Who knows, maybe this post will get deleted though I think that would be most unfortunate.

Lex, I understand your position. The site costs money and you cannot afford (nor be expected) to pay for rising costs due to increased membership. Logically, you either look to sponsors for support or initiate a subscription type service.

Unfortunately, I don't think the attitude you have adopted will help to bring new members in. When I visit a supposedly 'free chat' forum such as this (free chat, within the normal boundaries of the forum's rules) I do not expect to be silenced about speaking about a product competing against the sponsor's products. Any respectable sponsor should welcome competition, because presumably their product offers something others do not.

I do not mean when I say this that people can simply trash the sponsor's product just because they like another. What I am talking about is constructive conversation. If someone asks about 'Product A', I would expect to see many people offer their comments - and the reality is that some will be good, but there may be bad comments as well. This isn't to be taken personally. Not everybody will like every product. They have no vendetta against the product or the company, they simply do not choose it. Furthermore, I think it is reasonable to expect that competing products are mentioned. Once again, this does not slander the original product - it simply offers a contrast.

I'm sorry Lex, but if the sponsors products are not up to comparison and competition with others, well I don't think they are very respectable.

I don't expect this opinion to be very popular, but I am not one to simply go on with the popular vote. Neither do I expect my opinions to be silenced simply because you or others may disagree.

It is simply my opinion, but I do not think the stance you adopted will help to win HTGuide many friends.

Ciao guys!

/serious mode off...continue TTP fun now. :)

Bing Fung

Very valid comments Jeff, and I have to agree in context.

The HTG should not be biased in opinon to a given product just because it's a sponsor. I see this on the PC hardware sites and it's sad because you know the truth is hidden in attempts to show the product in all positive manners. However I think Lex's comments came from a point that if a person was stating he was going out to buy a sponsors product because he thinks it will work for him, we maybe shouldn't say "I wouldn't do that... look at brand x instead..." Now if he was asking me particularly about one product versus another, well he will get my opinon of it with only my personnal biases applied. I think this is what you are refering to.

I 'm certainly up for lively disscussion of the pros and cons of one product versus another regardless if they are a sponsor or not, however it depends more on the tone of the question at hand and what is the ultimate objective of the disscussion.

Lex, I support and understand your efforts, however I also agree with Jeff that if the question is asked, then it fair game.

Guys, I'm not going on the defensive here. If you don't like my comments, nough said-

I won't always make the right decisions, but in the end, they are my decisions to make, right or wrong. I'm not trying to win any popularity contests as a person here. I'm trying to run a business-

Good Morning Gentlemen!..

I am at home today..Feeling a little under the weather..
A day of rest and sleep should help me get back onto my feet.

Bing,,That water cooling is downright scary..Very cool ,but scary.
I think I am just going to stay away from it. I am definately not qualified to set this up.
I am best to get my fishtank set instead.

Great picture of the Alligator.:T
She will love seeing that on the screen.
You said it!, I am definately proud of Tori and Taylor too!
Being greeted by them when I get home from work just makes my day!!They are very precious to me.
They both have really taken a liking to Bing. That's because Bing is such a cool person with a great personality and awesome around the kids.. :yesnod:

Kevin,,I checked my E-bay account and everything was Ok..
I also tried to change my User ID , but the one I wanted was already taken. So I left it as is.
I will keep checking it though ,,to make sure it is OK.

Lex,, However I think Lex's comments came from a point that if a person was stating he was going out to buy a sponsors product because he thinks it will work for him, we maybe shouldn't say "I wouldn't do that... look at brand x instead..." Now if he was asking me particularly about one product versus another, well he will get my opinon of it with only my personnal biases applied.
I agree with Bing.
The thread that this occured, the creator did not ask a question on what cables to be recommended or compared , but instead asked specifically about Catcables.
Those guys that jump in and recommend other items were definately in the wrong.
I am glad Lex put his foot down. If he didn't put his foot down , then the giude would end up like some other forum that I no longer visit because it is saturated with idiots and unprofessional responses from a lot of it's members.
Keep the Guide clean Lex..If memebrs don't like the direction given and don't want to visit , that 's their choice. It will assist in keeping the Forum a better place for those who want to stay.
LEX>> ;x( Your the man!!

George,,sorry I didn't post a hot pic for you. I will try to get something though.

E!,,I agree..Children are Gods treasured Gifts. :sn
Lucky for me!,,I get to entertain and teach an entire grade 7 class about Wally World and our culture. Something I had set up with our Adopt a School. We will have atour of the backrooms, a breakfast and chat. Then they students will job shadow our dept managers for a couple of hours.
Looking forward to it.

Andrew Dude!!Your family is about to have a baby!! EXCITING!!:-y

Funny video with Bush and Blair.

Doug, you're right--there's a lot of flying lessons learned by flying the big heavy cargo aircraft that can carry over to the airliners.

Pat: Nice flip! Thanks! :yesnod:

I put in my $.02 already on the posting issue, and will stay out of the rest of it as just another member. I will say, though, that I don't envy the position of the owners/moderators when it comes to stuff like this. Very tough to maintain a professional forum that remains classy and supported, but is still open for everyone to express their opinions freely and openly. A constant going back and forth on how much control to exercise.

Anyone want to make their Microsoft Windows look more like OSX?Now why would I want my PC to look like a Mac? ;)

Get some rest Trevor... or is it more like "I want to play with my new PC so I called in sick!?"

So am I still allowed to gripe about my job? It doesn't make our sponsors look bad, I don't think... well I suppose it would if I worked for one of our sponsors, but I don't... so here goes. I get this email from the PHB that states:Effective immediately, all development groups within (company name) are being assigned the responsibility of providing test case scenarios to the QA group in (remote location) for every release of every product. The test case scenarios will need to be provided with the release notes (attached to the change ticket) when a build is implemented in the QA environment. So now I have to do QA's job as well as project management (also not part of my job description, only because our project managers are ID-10Ts). Of course they laid off most of the QA department, so if we have to do their work we should get paid extra. I'm sick of this more for less crap.

Not only that, but this wasn't communicated to me until today. Once again a failure of project management. I'm at a point where I'm doing the bare minimum required to keep my job, since that's what everyone else is doing.Kev: Now it's your turn buddy...go get um too! ;) How many times has it been my turn in the past 2 years now? What's it take to get interviews? Maybe I should go on a :a>'> spree and enjoy the resulting free room and board... question is, can I access TTP from Federal Pound-Me-In-The-A$$ prison!? 8O

I picked up a copy of "The Police: Every Breath You Take", remastered hybrid SACD during lunch. Listening to it, it sounds fantastic! Definitely one of the better-sounding discs I've spun in the tubicle system. I can imagine what the SACD layer sounds like, but that'll have to wait until I get home.

Uh-oh Trev...you haven't been on a plane from Toronto, Edmonton, or BC lately have you? Maybe Asia....?

Just kiddin' :D ... that SARS thing is kinda spooky stuff though.

My kids just went through a NASTY stomach flu...the "eat something, throw it back up immediately" kind. Poor little guys, the oldest threw up like 7 times 2 nights ago. Since it seems to play out in three days he should be going full steam tomorrow...even today, he's up and playing...just not eating. I don't blame him.

I'm sitting back and waiting to get it myself...I could use 3 days off. ;)

You know flus would be okey dokey if we could eliminate the puking part. I'll take fever over puking any day...but that's just me.

Thanks for everyone's encouragement and positive thoughts. :^x Congratulations. Now when is it my turn!? :PI know you guys just didn't ignore my pictures of my Alligator :wtf: I didn't ignore them, I just can't see them from work. I'm sure they're very nice.

Speaking of work (yes, it's one of THOSE days), I get a meeting invitation with the following description: "Review the (blah blah) changes that went to QA. Need detail on how the process works." :banghead: B-b-b-but, we went over the process BEFORE we started coding! And this invitation came from the one who did most of the work in coming up with the process!!! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: Not only that, the meeting is in less than an hour. Not exactly much time to prepare, especially since I have to create this freakin' TEST PLAN...

Actually, I came up with a version of the test plan that should work for all our projects. It goes like this:

Test Number: 1. Sanity check
Step Number: 1
Description/Step: Read the functional specs, and see what changes were made in this release. Test the changes.
Expected Results: The changes should work.
Pass/Fail/Block: Fail. No functional specs exist.
Comments/Defect #: Defect # 1D-10T. Faulty management.

I'd almost rather be unemployed than dealing with this kind of :urinal:  (we need a makin' poopy smiley for this sort of thing)

And get this (I heard this from my co-worker): the PHBs had a talk with one of the programmers (a Chinese guy) because his code isn't "object oriented" enough, and they can't understand him because of his accent. Ok, these doofuses wouldn't know object-oriented code if it hit them over the head, and come on, he's from another country, it's not like he grew up speaking English and can lose the accent overnight! :banghead:

This place is set to implode. It's getting to the point where if I don't get laid off this summer, I'm quitting! :bash: :bash: :banghead: :banghead:

Bing - what's "unforgivable"? The slow server response that made getting a flip "iffy"? The storm cloud picture? The latest Batman movie? :>)

I can see from your photos that Tori is quite the gifted little artist... you're lucky to be the recipient of so many special works and she is fortunate that you appreciate them... I've seen too many adults quickly dismiss or discard the handmade gifts of children... nice touch having the "To/From" inside the 'gator's mouth (the birds won't go in there and mess it up). :>)

BTW, I just recently read an article suggesting that alligators may really be birds! (Shades of Jurassic Park and Dr. Grant's theory of dinosaurs being related to birds.)

Sorry Bing/Trevor tori's picture really is sweet.

Regarding the birds and aligators there's a few theory's about what came from where but there are very likely some interesting common links between them. There's an interesting artical in the latest Scientific America magazine about birds, dinosaurs and the origin of feathers. BTW Grants theory on JP was that birds evolved from dinosaurs which this artical seems to support.

Saving these early works is a great idea. It is a shame more parents and other recipients of a child's artwork don't do that. Just be careful not to bring it back out too early (might have to wait for her to be an adult -- teens can dismiss stuff like that or even throw it away, only to be sorry later), or in circumstances that might embarrass her, like in front of her friends or YOUR friends when she is a teen. Maybe she won't have a problem with it but a lot of teens don't like to be reminded they were "cute little kids".

Meanwhile, continue to encourage her creativity and enjoy!

8O This is only going to have meaning to Winnipeggers...But apparently Nick Hill of Kernhill furniture passed away. He's a local icon in this town. He had pretty annoying commercials but in a lovable way. He was a big supporter of Winnipeg especially never giving up on Winnipeg's "North End". He never moved his store out of the North End when it would have made sense to do so and yet still remained profitable.

I'm sooo bummed...I didn't know the guy or anything but like I said, locally, this guy was an institution. He will missed.

I'm not looking for condolences. I'm just passing the info on to the locals of this guide.

Yes,,We will hold onto it for a while before we give it to her, however it is avaialble to see now. I nfact a couple weeks ago she was going through her Kindergartain stuff which is also in a binder.
She will be an artist down the road..She just can stop drawing.

Thanks PAt!,..

Gordon,,That's tough to hear about a community minded person passing away. I am sure many folk in the city will be remembering him.

Sonnie,,She probably gets it from her mom..The sweetness thing.

Mat's, Moby Dock ya say ? More importantly Can Trev change his color of the start button from green? I told him that if he used a resolution higher than 1024x768 it wouldn't looks so big on his 21" monitor, thus it wouldn't bugg him as much.. He wasn't impressed

Chris, you have to be one hell'va funny guy in person, you just come up with the most common stuff that has me rolling. Yeah, you guys are just Com'mon guys to me now! Ask Chris in flying what he would consider a good landing, Chris would respond "any landing you walk away from is a good landing regardless if the plane is upside down.." heheh

Trev, good to hear your feeling better...

Sonnie, Tori does get her kindness from Trev, the sweetness part, well I have seen a twinkle in Trev's eye from time to time

Burke, My wife Christine still has her kindergarten drawings 8O

Everyone, Thanks on the Congrats of the new job. I hope it is fun while it lasts and that I can learn some new tricks. I have to say I was a bit down in the mouth that eveing after the interview. I went to Trev's and he picked me up, dusted me off and gave me the Stuart Smally affirmations that made me feel better, and gosh darn-it... He was right ;)

Thanks as well for the comments on my alligator, it's very special to me and I feel so honored to be adored by Trev's kids.

Pat, Photogs seem to think alike don't they ;)

So now that I have time to relax, I decided to have a look at my new toy....

alright by popular demand here's a few pictures I snapped tonight with my new Canon A60 2MP digital camera. This little guy has more options then I will ever likely know how to use...it comes with a manual that's about the size of 3 CD's stacked on top of each other 8O I got though most of it but all these were shot in its auto mode..I'll play with some of the manual settings as I get more comfortable with it.

Agreed Andrew, the house looks great as does your family. Does Jody have a stuffed animal toy? I seen the coolest and cutest thing this winter. Bing,,I already had them on clear when I checked.

There is a rattle coming from the fan on my power supply.

NP Chris... is a gooder. We have great emos here on HTG.

Trev, unless your ordering more stuff the shipping may be more than the screens. Have you seen a fan around town or a heatsink you may upgrade to? I ask because once you have that sorted out the fan screen can go back on the power supply. What ever Heatsink combo you go with make sure it takes 80mm fans. That Thermal Right SLK800 is a killer HS I tell ya. Bolt another Antec blue fan on that and you will be cooler in CPU temps and looks. Only thing is the Antec won't be able to take advantage of the the Asus's Q-fan technology.

Well, I tend to like the 800 and a blue Antec just cause it more hard core... It's also twice the price.

However the Thermal take is kinda flashy, and it does come loaded with great features like the Smart temperture throttling, you don't get that with the Antec because it doesn't plug into Asus Q-fan header.

The TT would be quieter, plus it would just look too killer in that pimped out rig or yours. I have not read a review on it yet, but I may just to find out.

I'm heading to Atlanta for our company convetion in June, so Burke got the Georgia Dome location. It's funny, I wasn't planning on going when the convetion was announced, but all of a sudden, we decided that it was something that we had to go. Funny how that works.

Hmm, some fireworks in the other sections, must mean the Guide's growing!

Chris: Belated congrats on your qualifications. Refueling such a big plane has got to take even more skill than those tiny little fighters.

Bing: Congrats on the job. I'm sure you'll do well there. Here's a system that I'm thinking of getting, but I do have a few questions.

AMD ATHLON XP 2400+ 256K 266FSB SOCKET A RETAIL BOX 1
ASUS A7N8X SOCKETA NFORCE2 DDR AGP8X 5PCI USB2.0 ATA133 W/ SOUND & LAN 1
SAMSUNG 512MB PC2700 DDR333 184PIN OEM x 2
WD CAVIAR 120GB INT ATA/100 HD 3.5LP 9MS 8MB 7200RPM OEM 1
1.44 MB High Density Floppy Drive 1
ATI RADEON 9000 64MB DDR AGP DVI/VGA W/ TV OUT OEM 1
ANTEC 1080 PERFORMANCE PLUS CHASSIS 4X5.25IN 6X3.5IN 430W TRUEPOWER GREY 1
CDR LITEON 52X24X52 ATAPI IDE CD-REWRITER SMART-BURN OEM W/ SOFTWARE 1
$1,328.56 CND

What kind of additional cpu fan or case fans should I get?
What't the main difference between the Asus A7N8X and the Delux version? As far as I can make out, it's the serial ATA and the 2nd lan.
I'm not looking for a fast video card as I intend to swap out my Matrox G550 with the ATI. Now that I think about it, maybe I'll just order it without a video card. I'm basically going to canabalize my old computer, so I'll be adding a DVD/CDRW drive, a ZIP drive, and will attempt to mount my old HD to see if I can salvage any data.

xx) xx) Morning folks! xx) xx)

Wow, everyone is going PC crazy! I wish I could join in the fun, but I need to pull a Bing and get a job, before I can pull a Bing and build a rad PC. :-y Seems like everyone likes Athlons, what are the bennies over the P-IV? Cheaper? Faster?

What benefits does a widescreen display on a laptop have, besides watching anamorphic DVDs (which you can do on a 4:3 laptop just as well)? More compact size perhaps?

Oh, and I finally get to say: Bing, Trevor, and Tori, that is a cute alligator. She's quite thoughtful. How old is she again?

I thought of something early this morning, when I woke up, which I'm going to try here. It's Kevin's first official GEEK POLL! Just answer the following questions and we'll all know more about each other's computers, software, and other geeky odds and ends. I'll start.

How many PCs do you have? 3 - main, firewall, and laptop

Describe your primary computer -

Brand: Micron Millennia 3100
CPU: Intel Pentium III/800
Cache: 512 KB (I think)
RAM: 512 MB, PC133
Video: Xtasy GEforce4, 64 MB
Audio: Integrated SoundBlaster 128 compatible
Monitor: old Sony 17"
Speakers: Altec-Lansing cubes w/bass module
Hard Drive(s): 30 GB
Other Drives: DVD-ROM, CD-RW, 8GB Travan tape backup, 3.5" floppy
Other cards: 56K PCI Modem, Netgear 10/100 NIC, SIIG Firewire card
Other devices: Sony USB Memory Stick drive

Favorite brand of DVD-Rs: N/A, I don't have a DVD burner yet

Internet Access: Cable Modem, Comcast
Networked: yes, old 10baseT hub, plus a 802.11b wireless access point, and a Linux box that acts as a NAT router and firewall.

Your next upgrade will be: I dunno, maybe build a Bing-ish PC, or if something breaks I'll replace it

Ok, now for some really geeky questions:

Last email you received: A "find out more about your friends" email from one of Heather's friends, that's what gave me the idea for this poll, by using geek questions instead

Last SPAM you received: An "online pharmacy" email, this morning

Last virus or worm you received: Klez

Has your system ever been infected with a virus or worm? No

Do you do programming or web development? Yes, Visual Basic, C++, Java, HTML, JavaScript, blah, blah...

Your favorite website: HTGuide, of course! :-y

What operating system would you use if given the choice: Linux

I'm sure I'll think of more questions as the day wears on, and of course anyone participating in the poll can add new questions too!

Hey Pauly, Thanks Bro!

Looks like you done pretty well with your parts pick yourself...

Athlon XP 2400, Great Choice! Best bang for buck and overclocks like a champ (when would I not factor in OC'bility ;) ) 2500 Bartons are about $66 bucks more for the newer technology, but don't handily beat the old guard Thoroughbred all the time, so If cost effective performance is paramount, you made the right choice.

A7N8X... Excellent choice! Best Socket A solution going. Differences between the deluxe and non is the deluxe has Serial ATA/RAID, Dual LANs, IEEE 1394 Firewire support and Post Reporter Function.

Samsung 2700 RAM, Excellent choice!

WD Caviar 120 JB drive, Excellent choice!

Antec 1080 case, Excellent choice! I think cases are more personal :)

Lite On 52x24x52, Excellent choice!

You picked exactly the same system I would have Paul, given the same scope of parameters :5:

For the HSF, I'm kinda partial to the Alpha 8045 just because it bolts on to the motherboard rather than clipping on. I'm a fan of the bigger heavier HS just because you don't need as high a RPM fan to keep the CPU at low operating temperatures. In tests I conducted wih my Alpha, there was no real measurable CPU temperature difference between a louder 5000 RPM Sunon and my now 3200 RPM Sunon. This indicates that the heat sink is very well designed such that it can absorb and dissapate heat rapidly regardless of fan CFM. Applying a loud high RPM fan will always compensate for a poorley designed heatsink, so when the Alpha cools the same regardless of fan, you know it's all heat sink. Downside to this is the cost $78.47 which has come down somewhat since I purchased mine at $100.

Another no holds barred heat sink is the Thermal Right SLK800/900 series of full copper heat sinks. These are monsters as well and are tops in cooling down the CPU. My only reservation with them is they mount with the standard lugs onto the plastic clips of the CPU socket. They are at, or surpass the recommended HS maximum weight (~500G for a 3 lug clip) which isn't really a concern if you aren't attending LAN parties or moving the case around lots. These are ~$70 with out fan for the 800, $84 for the 900.

Those 3 should be at the top of your list if you plan on doing any serious overclocking.... Or if you just want to cool you cpu with the lowest RPM fan possible. My Asus Q-Fan throttles my 3200 RPM Sunon to 2300 RPM most times and only kicks it up to 3200 full RPM during 100% CPU loads. It is still relatively quiet at full speed.

Now if your looking for a cost effective HSF, the one that comes with the retail box will do as well, but the 40mm, 5000 RPM fan tends to buzz louder than I care for so, a HS that can accomadate a 80mm fan is nessesary. If you just want quiet cooling, look at the same one Trev just picked up a Thermal take Volcano 9. It does the job and is relatively quiet depending on the fan speed setting. And who can argue with it's feature set? It's loaded! In this price class, there is not any particular one that stands out in my mind as superiour over the other. They all do the job well enough and are better than the stock retail cooler.

Extra case fans, I believe you only need to add 1x80mm fan to the front intake port of the ANTEC 1080 and your set. The Antec comes with 2x80mm exhaust fans and 1x80 side panel fan, I believe. Of course if you want to Pimp it out like Trev's with colored fans. London Drugs has the Antec LED fans on sale right now for $14. I don't know about you but I have a soft spot for these lit fans even though I don't have them in my case, must be a Asian thing for things that go bling, bling, bling. If not, just get a Sunon 80mm 3200 RPM fan and your set to roll.

You picked a gooder :T

Pat, pricey I know, but that's why I picked it for Trev ;) plus it's the fastest laptop available on the planet. It is one of the few that most likely will be able to play Doom III with any type of frame rate adn eye candy. Then who knows, maybe nothing short of an AMD Hammer and ATI Radeon 10000 will be able to play Doom III with eye candy 8O

Ha, ha Kevin, I'll be back in the food stamp line come July :W

Athlons don't hold a real advantage over Intels anymore... Conversely I personally give the edge to Intel because there latest round of P4's scale so well with clock speed increases. P4's are the overclock kings at this point. I think AMD just has what is called cult following by the PC enthusiests.

Agreed on the wide screen, give me that Alienware Area 51m. So what if it weighs in at a porky 9.5 pounds... thats the price of power

Thanks on my alligator Kevin. Tori is 5 years old and she display advanced artistic abilities for that age group, IMHO.

I have since added some fans that allow me to run the card up to 380Mhz from the stock 325 mhz core clock. Memory overclock is only at 660Mhz DDR from 620Mhz stock. I may need some BGA RAM sinks.

http://www3.sk.sympatico.ca/fung1/sc1s.jpg

Here are 2 games I have been playing, The First on is Splinter Cell, and the Graphiocs are amazing. the Screen shots don't do it justice. In this image there is a lot of Raytracing going on and those beams of light comeing down are truely stunning in game.

http://www3.sk.sympatico.ca/fung1/gr_pc2s.jpg

This is Ghost Recon on PC, the 9700Pro graphics really surpass the Xbox Ghost Recon Graphics, How ever I have been having a lot of fun playin the Xbox version on the Live with my buddy Cam in Calgary. Those Live communicator head sets really make it seem as if we are on the same team/battlefield... Anyone with an Xbox, please buy or rent this game and lets play!

 Andrew, I get excited when the Canadian Tire catalog shows up at the door. It immediately goes into the bathroom reading rack.
'Course reading material is only supplied in my bathroom. The main level bathroom has potpourri and flowers and the like. (BAH!)

Not mine (in the basement of course). Well maybe a can of lysol but that's it (original scent...not the flowery stuff)

arrh, arrh, arrh....arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrh! :D

Gordon Moore

Hey now There's a Poll:

What reading material is in YOUR bathroom?

mine:

Lee Valley Catalog,
Canadian Tire,
Computing Canada,
Network Computing Canada,
Sony Electronics Canada Products Catalog 2003,
Yamaha Canada AV Catalog 2003 (all the new HT products 8) ).
Old Denon 5800 product flyer (not sure why I have that anymore...I'm kinda partial to Yamaha now for receivers)

Gordon, where did you get the Yamaha Canada Catalogue ?

My reading material ? I don't have a bathroom rack so I grab something from the mag rack when the time comes. Love the idea of HT catalogues, though.

Afternoon folks. Just finished lunch. Had to run out and get cat food. :)

Judging from the reactions of Mats' graphic, I'm thinking that my stealth browser saved my a$$ once again. 8O

Cute story there E. I still don't want kids. ;)

I can just imagine when lil' Andrew reaches the terrible twos::sn :sn :sn Good Morning! :sn :sn :sn

Today I found my son got into the fridge and dumped the milk all over the floor! Then he climbed up on the counters and started playing in the sink with all the dirty dishes, dropping a few on the floor! Oh what the hey, they're just dishes! :D Yesterday he spilled milk all over my ice-age PC and fried it so now I have to buy a new one! I'm still cleaning the finger paints off of the HDTV screen! 8) Life is so great, I didn't want to leave for work because I miss my wonderful son so much! Nicole just called and told me that Andrew just set fire to the living room rug! He's SO wonderful, I just want to hug him!! :D

I don't read in the bathroom. Not very often anyway. Last time I read something on the john was the sendmail documentation I had just printed out. :E

Wandered into the local downtown ABSound and saw the catalog on top of a Yamaha RXV3300. The guy said I could have it. It has all the latest specs on their receivers, plasmas, projectors etc...

I don't think there's anything that you can't see off the web, it's just that it would be a little hard to browse from the throne. ;)

However with Andrew going wireless with his laptop...all he needs is a fridge in his and we'd never see him again. :P

Now that we are a quarter of the way through the page flps for TTP IX, not that anyone is counting, :>) here are unofficial stats so far:

( 3 ) Andrew Pratt
( 1 ) Bing Fung
( 2 ) Burke Strickland
( 4 ) Chris Dotur
( 3 ) David Meek
( 1 ) Kevin Patz
( 2 ) Lex
( 2 ) Mats
( 1 ) Pat
( 1 ) Paul Wu
( 1 ) Sonnie Parker
( 3 ) Trever Schell
( 1 ) X - Not Counted
( 25 ) Total Flips

With 26 total pages so far, we have 25 flips, 24 of which are actually credited to participants. Three folks have started four pages (Chris Dotur, David Meek, Trevor Schell), but as we have discussed before, according to the "rules", the third flip of three-in-a-row gets disqualified and the first page isn't a flip. (That's one reason why we go to page 101 before starting a new edition -- stats are a lot easier to compute when based on 100 instead of 99 and that gives us 100 flips.)

E -- I think your excitment over your son's first celebration of your birthday and his "present" to you is wonderful. I hope your loving relationship endures through all his ages growing up, and beyond. (Sometimes teens are a lot less anxious to be around their parents than babies or toddlers, at least when their peers are present, but that doesn't necessarily mean there is not still a strong bond there.)

Cute story there E. I still don't want kids.
The world would be better off if a lot more people who don't really want kids didn't have them. I really feel sorry for unwanted children whom the parents have anyway. They almost inevitably get abused one way or another.

One of the advantages of being an uncle instead of a daddy is being able to hand a wet-diapered, screaming child back to its parents. :>) But for those who want the responsibility of parenthood, there are rewards that cannot be duplicated by material possessions or work. (So I'm told.) :>)

Well - although no one has really noticed, I've been MIA. I ended up at the doctors on Monday because my ankle was still swollen and hurting. It seems I have been walking on a broken ankle for 2 weeks. :( Tuesday I went to a Orthopedic Specialist and he told me that the ankle bone had been chipped and I have ligament damage on both sides. I will be going to physical therapy for the next couple of months.

Kevin..Oh, and I finally get to say: Bing, Trevor, and Tori, that is a cute alligator. She's quite thoughtful. How old is she again?

Tori just turned 6 years old in December. Thanks for the nice comments..

Bing!!Wouldn't you recommend for Paul to get the Barton Chip for $63 more. I figured with the Asus A7N8X and PC 2700 ram ,,Paul wpuld be able to run the board at a 333 bus speed. Otherwise he is bottlenecked at 266Mhz bus speed causing him to under run his system when it would have potential to go the next level. Am I right on this.

Paul, Congrats on the Computer upgrade..Suggestion though..Go with a case that has a glass door!..Then you can add Neon lighting to it!:T
If they don't have the glass door configuration available ,just ask them to through the parts in a bag or carton for you and you can assemble it yourself after purchasing a clear door case!!GO FOR IT!! :yesnod:

Bing Fung

Trev, it's tough choice between these two chips, however I know Paul is looking for bang for buck so the 2400XP is a good choice.

Bear with me here as I think and write... Another consideration is that although the 2400 XP is running at a slower FSB (133 Mhz) it has a higher multiplier (15X) for a clock speed of 2.0 Ghz. Now consider this for a moment, Running at a FSB of 133 Mhz, the 2400XP system really has a lot of head room for it probably could be over clocked to nearly 166FSB anyway. The Samsung RAM could certainly handle this for it's rated at 166Mhz and has been tested as high as 207Mhz. That could possibly yield a CPU that is running at 2490 Mhz. Or put another way basically a 2800XP. With the Barton on the other hand, the Samsung is aready running at it's rated speed of 166 mhz, so the head room there is a lot lower by default. Unless you had the 3200/3500 Ram, I think the 2400XP will be the faster chip here.

The Barton is performance rated at 2500 with an actual 11x multipier @ 166 mhz FSB. This gives it an actual clock speed of 1830 mhz. Now remember the only real advantage the Barton has over the older T'breds it the bigger L2 cache and the 166FSB. The L2 cache in itself does not always translate to tangible performance gains because some applications perform better with the extra cache, while some don't benefit much at all. Some people even feel that the performance ratings AMD has applied to the new Barton's are more Marketing hype that real performance values. My gut tells me this is possible.... Actual Clock speed is usually king.... Tom's stated the performance rating of the XP 3000 is aggressive and that the old 2800XP actual left it in the dust in most benchmarks. And if a 2400XP can be ran at near 166FSB anyway, it really has an advantage I feel.

Apperently the Althon does not really need the L2 cache as much as the Pentium design. The P4 when launched was really a dog out of the gates. What picked it out of the ground was the extra cache (512 from 256). Performance of this chip jumped as high as 64% with the added amount. The Athlon depends more on its L1 cache, which is still at 128kb and early tests of various application show not to expect too much from Barton's L2 cache.

In the end, I think it's pretty equal, and until I see more benchmarks of the 2500 Barton I think the 2400XP is still a good deal.

I have been waffeling on this myself, wondering if I should buy the 2400Xp or the XP 2500 Barton... So I'll have to say "I don't know..."

My HT nut co-worker friend just got a new toy, a Sony DVP-CX875P 300-disc DVD changer. For giggles we hooked it up to my tubicle system and sampled a CD, it sounded pretty good though we didn't A/B it against my 555ES megachanger. He's run out of room for his DVD collection so this player will be a big help.

I'm beginning to think that I could set my watch to Pat's daily 7:26 AM post. :) Those speakers look wonderful, and I've found that most speakers that look wonderful sound wonderful too!

Joke:
There was a Frenchman, an Englishman and Claudia Schiffer sitting together in a carriage in a train going through Provence. Suddenly the train went through a tunnel and as it was an old style train, there were no lights in the carriages and it went completely dark. Then there was a kissing noise and the sound of a really loud slap. When the train came out of the tunnel, Claudia Schiffer and the Englishman were sitting as if nothing had happened and the Frenchman had his hand against his face as if he had been slapped there. The Frenchman was thinking: 'The English fella must have kissed Claudia Schiffer and she missed him and slapped me instead.' Claudia Schiffer was thinking: 'The French fella must have tried to kiss me and actually kissed the Englishman and got slapped for it.' And the Englishman was thinking: 'This is great. The next time the train goes through a tunnel I'll make another kissing noise and slap that French bastard again.'

Under the right conditions, any explosion can produce a mushroom-looking cloud. It doesn't have to be huge (MOAB or nuke).

I thought I read somewhere that the military only had one MOAB, the one they tested a couple weeks ago. But then if they have more of them it could be classified or something.

MOAB - Massive Ordnance Air-Blast Bomb
"Mother Of All Bombs"

The US Air Force has developed the 21,000-lb., or 95-hundred kilogram, satellite-guided Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bombs (MOAB) as a successor to the the 15,000-lb. "Daisy Cutters" used in Vietnam and Afghanistan. The Air Force is said to call MOABs (pronounced MOE-ab) the mother of all bombs. As with the earlier Daisy Cutter, these huge bombs are dropped out of the rear of the C-130 cargo plane.

Unlike the Daisy Cutter, the MOAB is released without the use of a parachute. As a result, the aircraft releasing the bomb can fly at higher altitudes, thus making it safer for US pilots. This replacement for the BLU-82 bomb uses more of the slurry of ammonium nitrate and powdered aluminum used in the BLU-82. Other reports indicate that the MOAB might use tritonal explosive as opposed to the gelled slurry explosive of the BLU-82.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/munitions/images/moab-test-030311-12-s.jpg

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/munitions/images/moab-comp.gif

Previous news reports state that the MOAB will be used in Iraq.... but you know how some news reports can be.

Recent news reports (as in the last hour) state that the "Shock and Awe" compaign has still yet to commence. The targets now are merely paving the way for the "Shock and Awe" compaign.

Moabs Rule!!

Gordon, What your seeing is the Zalman HP-80A Heat Pipe cooler. It's a fanless design that replaces the stock fan cooler on a graphics card. It has 2 large heat sinks that are bridged with what is called the "Heat Pipe", creating a larger area for heat transfer and disspersion. The pipe has a wick in it and is filled with a special type of liquid that when heated, turns to vapor and transfers the heat from the main heatsink (attached to the GPU) to the secondary heat sink (on the back side of the card). Once the vapor has traveled and transfered the heat to the secondary heat sink, the vapor is scrubbed of it's heat and retuned back down to the main heatsink as liquid again, only to continue the cycle.

http://www.thermacore.com/images/heat_pipe_illustration.jpg

Heat Pipe Princples (http://www.thermacore.com/hpt_how.htm)

It works very well, however the addition of a fan blowing on the Heatsinks further facilitate a lower operating GPU.

These Picture may help...

Actually the "edginess" in Holly Cole's voice is part of its appeal to me. She can sound mellifluous and "buttery" at times, but as part of her expressiveness, her voice can take on qualities of raspiness, mellowness, thinness, fullness, sugary sweetness (not very often) or vinegery sourness to underscore the lyrics... which I find quite appealling. There are very few times in the dozen or so albums of hers that I own that I don't find her voice just about spot on "perfect' for the song and mood.

One example where I don't think it succeeds as intended is the very strange intro to "On The Street Where You Live" (on the album "Blame It On My Youth") which sounds like a drugged out, desperate loser about to crash for the last time -- and then segues to a very uplifting and satisfying, but much more "traditional" reading of the remainder of the song. Of course, there are probably a couple of hundred other examples I could give where she basically takes possession of a song after which listening to the same song by any other aritst just doesn't sound "right" anymore (even if somone elses rendition was a "favorite" before.) An example of that is "Losing My Mind" (on the album "It Happened One Night").

Bing: Thanks for comments on my system. I've got a couple more questions:

Is it an easy to add on a case fan? I'm thinking of just buying that Antec one from LD and sticking that in. Do I have to worry about having enough power connections?

Will the Thermal Take Volcano 9 be good enough for some over clocking duties? I don't plan to initially OC, but probably will down the road.

Should I just get a second WD 120G drive now and set it up as a mirrored drive, or have it as a seperate nonbootable, backup data drive?

Oh, how should I plug in the drives? Are we still limited to x number of drives pre IDE channel? I'm thinking
IDE Channel 1: WD 120G, CDRW
IDE Channel 2: WD 120G, DVD/CDRW

Can I mount my old Maxtor 40G and Quantum 6G somewhere in the above setup? Or do I have to unplug one of the drives?

Trev: Bing has pretty much covered most of my concerns. I had thought of the Barton chip, but read the 2400+ is more OCable. I'm actually looking for a 'basic' machine. :)

I don't know if it's that I'm getting old, jaded, or just married too long but those pics just don't phase me that much... :boobies:

Eduardo, you're 6 months in already? Seems like you just got back from your huggymoon. :T

Paul, IDE allows two devices (1 master, 1 slave) on a channel. If you want/need more than 4 IDE devices you'll need to add a PCI IDE card.

That didn't work.... I was way too slow! lol

Oh well.

I know this is long, but if you support our service men and women, it's well worth reading.

This lady tells it like it is.

Last week, the Shelby County Alabama Legislative Delegation hosted a
"Stand Up for America Rally." More than 1,200 people attended including featured speakers Chief Justice Roy Moore, Adjutant General Mark Bowen, and Alabama State Auditor Beth Chapman.

Attached is a copy of Mrs. Chapman's speech, which resulted in five standing ovations, tremendous applause, and an encore. It's a short read and well worth it.

Stand Up for America Rally Speech by: Beth Chapman

I'm here tonight because men and women of the United States military have given their lives for my freedom. I am not here tonight because Sheryl Crowe, Rosie O'Donnell, Martin Sheen, George Clooney, Jane Fonda or Phil Donahue, sacrificed their lives for me.

If my memory serves me correctly, it was not movie stars or musicians, but the United States Military who fought on the shores of Iwo Jima, the jungles of Vietnam, and the beaches of Normandy. Tonight, I say we should support the President of the United States and the U.S. Military and tell the liberal, tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing, hippy, tie-dyed liberals to go make their movies and music and whine somewhere else.

After all, if they lived in Iraq, they wouldn't be allowed the freedom of speech they're being given here today. Ironically, they would be put to death at the hands of Sadam Husssein or Osama Bin Laden. I want to know how the very people who are against war because of the loss of life, can possibly be the same people who are for abortion?

They are the same people who are for animal rights but against the Rights of the unborn. The movie stars say they want to go to Iraq and serve as "human shields" for the Iraqis. I say let them buy a one-way ticket and go.

No one likes war. I hate war! But the one thing I hate more is the fact that this country has been forced into war-innocent people have lost their lives - - and there but for the grace of God, it could have been my brother, my husband, or even worse my own son.

On December 7, 1941, there are no records of movie stars treading the blazing waters of Pearl Harbor.

On September 11, 2001; there are no photos of movie stars standing as "human shields" against the debris and falling bodies ascending from the World Trade Center. There were only policemen and firemen - -underpaid civil servants who gave their all with nothing expected in return.

When the USS Cole was bombed, there were no movie stars guarding the ship - - where were the human shields then?

If America's movie stars want to be human shields, let them shield the gang-ridden streets of Los Angeles, or New York City, let them shield the lives of the children of North Birmingham whose mothers lay them down to sleep on the floor each night to shelter them from stray bullets.

If they want to be human shields, I say let them shield the men and women of honesty and integrity that epitomizes courage and embody the spirit of freedom by wearing the proud uniforms of the United States Military.

Those are the people who have earned and deserve shielding!

Throughout the course of history, this country has remained free, not because of movie stars and liberal activists, but because of brave men And women who hated war too. However, they lay down their lives so that we all may live in freedom. After all - "What greater love hath no man, that he lay down his life for his friend," or in this case a country.

We should give our military honor and acknowledgement and not let their lives be in vain. If you want to see true human shields, walk through Arlington Cemetery. There lie human shields, heroes, and the BRAVE Americans who didn't get on television and talk about being a human shield – they were human shields.

I thank God tonight for freedom - - those who bought and paid for it with their lives in the past - - those who will protect it in the present and defend it in the future.

America has remained silent too long! God-fearing people have remained silent too long!

We must lift our voices united in a humble prayer to God for guidance and the strength and courage to sustain us throughout whatever the future may hold.

After the tragic events of Sept. 11th, my then eleven -year-old son said terrorism is a war against them and us and if you're not one of us, then you're one of them.

So in closing tonight, let us be of one accord, let us stand proud, and let us be the human shields of prayer, encouragement and support for the President, our troops and their families and our country.

May God bless America, the land of the free, the home of the brave, and the greatest country on the face of this earth.

Andrew, it is a monster of a cooler to be sure :D

Bing:

Is it an easy to add on a case fan? I'm thinking of just buying that Antec one from LD and sticking that in. Do I have to worry about having enough power connections?

Hey Paul, Yep real easy... The Antec case has these purple snap in cages that the fans snap into, the cages then snap into the case. Most fans will have a pass through connector that basically allows you to tap power from any power supply connector.

http://www.burnoutpc.com/images/reviews/xoxtriledfans/MVC-156F.JPG

The Antec Fan have the 4 pin Pass through connector in addition to a 3pin connector that can be plugged in to a fan header on the motherboard. This 3 pin allows you to monitor RPM of the fan. The 1080 case comes with the Antec 430W power supply so you'll have plenty of connectors and power reserve. Nice case BTW.

Will the Thermal Take Volcano 9 be good enough for some over clocking duties? I don't plan to initially OC, but probably will down the road.

From what I have read on it, Yes it is good enough for serious over clocking, however it may require the fan to run at a higher RPM to keep the CPU at a lower temp than say an Alpha 8045 or a Thermal Right SLK800. If it were me, I would get the Alpha or SLK, but that's just me.... Another consideration is I don't think the Volcano 9's fan takes power directly from the mother boards header. This isn't really an issue, however for the smart throttling on the fan to work I believe you have to attach the temperature probe on the fan to the CPU's back side and use the built in smart system of the Volcano 9. If you had a CPU fan that just used the small 3 pin connector that connects to the mother board's CPU header, then the Asus Q-fan would take over throttling of the fan. It runs the fan at the required RPM dependant on monitored CPU temperatures. I'm a big fan of Q-FAN and I couldn't imagine having a Air cooled system with out some form of this smart monitoring. In my system, Q-Fan keeps my CPU fan at around 2300 RPM. It is very quiet here and mostly all I hear are my 4 Harddrives and the power supply fans. When I load up the CPU with video encoding or gaming, the Q-fan then runs the CPU fan up to whatever is required. Most times it runs it up to the fans max RPM of 3300, which is still relativley quiet, however it is more noticable than when the fan is at it's lowest setting. Q-Fan keeps the fan at it's lowest setting 95% of the time.

My current CPU temps are 47C idle and 52C max load, remember than my CPU is overclocked by 200 Mhz so it's going to run hotter. The Max temp that AMD recommends is 90C and I'm well below that with a 80mm, 3200 RPM (max) 2300 RPM (nominal) fan that is stealthly quiet.

Here is a look at my Alpha 8045 in case.... It's designed to suck air through the sink, rather than blow it down onto the HS.

http://www3.sk.sympatico.ca/fung1/80a.jpg

It's not that sexy looking, but it flat out works... I actually like it's understated looks.. You can see the 3 pin connector that plugs into the mother board.

Here is a good review on the Volcano 9 and Cool Mod fan (http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/v9coolmod/index.htmll)

Here is a nice comparitive list of popular coolers (http://www.dansdata.com/coolercomp.htm)

Should I just get a second WD 120G drive now and set it up as a mirrored drive, or have it as a seperate nonbootable, backup data drive?

The A7N8X does not mirror the drives in the PATA IDE channels, and will only do it with the SATA channels (Serial ATA). You probably could run some software that would do this for you, however unless you have a lot of data that you just can't afford to lose, I personally think it's a waste of space to mirror the entire drive. I just back up what is important to me.. So if you were to buy another WD 120 drive, I would just set it up as a slave drive on IDE CH1 and use it as a back-up /storage drive with a few partitions.

If you do need mirroring, the A7N8X supports it when using the SATA channels. You could use these PATA/SATA adapters that adapts PATA (parallel ATA) drives like the WD 120 JB to be used with the SATA channels, however I have been reading on various forums that people are experiencing corrupt data transfers/files when using these adapters while transfering large amounts of data. It's inconclusive at this point if the adapters are to blame or if it's immature drivers for the SATA controller. So I would tend to stay away from these for now.

You could opt for the Seagate Barracuda 80 GB SATA drives available on NCIX right now, however they cost more and in actual benchmarks the WD JB PATA drives smokes it's butt.... Maxtor has a SATA from their Diamond Max 9 line that shows some promise as a SATA drive, from what I have read it's actually a PATA drive that has been converted to a SATA drive, and it is the fastest of the SATA line so far. NCIX does not list them, however MLH Systems in Winnipeg (http://www.mlhsystems.com/momex/NavCode/Hardware/ID/HardDrive) is showing them in their line up.

Here is Toms take (http://www.tomshardware.com/storage/20030314/index.html) on the Diamondmax 9 SATA drive.

The SATA drive to wait for is the 10,000 RPM WD Raptor that is coming some time.. It approches SCSI drive performance however it's inital offering is only 36Gb in size and it may be loud(er?)...

I don't know if you've had a chance to look at the SATA cables but the are sexy as hell and a lot sleeker than the old ribbon standard. I want SATA drives just so I can use these cables :) The A7N8X comes with sexy red ones :leghumper:

http://www.ocaddiction.com/reviews/hd/seagate_sata120/Picture026.jpg
Compare that to a bigassed ribbon cord..

Oh, how should I plug in the drives? Are we still limited to x number of drives pre IDE channel? I'm thinking
IDE Channel 1: WD 120G, CDRW
IDE Channel 2: WD 120G, DVD/CDRW

Unfortunately we are... Each PATA IDE channel will accept only 2 drives. Each SATA Channel will accept 1 drive only. Given your example above, I would place both WD120G's on IDE Ch1 and then leave the DVD/CDRW on it's own channel. Apperently the channel slows down to the slower ATA rating of the devices connected to the channel. Since most CD drives only support UDMA mode 2 at most, you would be slowing your one harddrive down to ATA 33 specifications, when the hard drive is capable of ATA 100.

Can I mount my old Maxtor 40G and Quantum 6G somewhere in the above setup? Or do I have to unplug one of the drives?

You have the one open port in IDE channel 2 so I would plug 1 of your extra drives into there with the drive jumpered as slave and the DVD/CDRW jumpered as master. You could just leave the drive connected, but you cannot connect both drives and have the DVD/CDRW connected. You could just swap out those 2 older drives, transfering the data off on to the WD 120G's until the drives are clear. Just be sure to turn your PC off each time you connect or disconnect a hard drive. And as you power up the PC, press Delete Key to bring up the BIOS menu. From there all you have to do is go into the IDE devices menu and reselect Auto detect (it will be set to there already) by doing this you just initilize the drive as a recognized drive in your system and once Windows starts, the drive is there, no fuss no muss. if you don't chances are Windows will detect the drive once it starts and then after it set's it up, it will prompt you to reboot. It's just simpler to set it up in the BIOS to begin with.

Hope that helped more than it hindered.....

That is going to be one nice PC!

Pat, I'm sure my comments aren't required for affirmation, but your welcome.. I bet one listen to those and a person knows they were well worth it :T
