So the moral is: when they ask you to move to Detriot, say yes the first time, and get ready to pack!

Maybe but not as a rule.... my brothers been asked to move to Calgary 3 times and he's turned it down every time...it hasn't affected his current job in the least.

Hey guys. This is my first post from my wireless connection!

Seems to be working ok. Haven't had a chance to check range etc. I'll do that later.

Burke: The Amadeus disc does not have the original version on it, only the Director's Cut. No need for the original - unless you're an anal HTF purist. ;) The new cut is better, IMHO. It paints Salieri in quite a different light...the largest of the added scenes completely changes the dimension of the story in fact.

Picture quality is glorious and the sound has more ooomph. That opening sequence will scare the crap out of you!!! :)

Jeff -- Thanks for the info on the Amadeus DVD. From my very first viewing years ago, it has been one of my favorite movies -- not only a great production, but fun to watch over and over. I've always felt that there was something "missing" in the characterization of Salieri that might explain why, for instance, Mozart's wife was so surprised to see Salieri in their home at the end and why she was so hostile toward him then after having gone to him for help earlier. Since you say the added footage adds to our understanding of Salieri, maybe it will help illuminate that point... hope so. Plus it'll sure be nice to have the movie on a disc that isn't a flipper. I'll have to keep an eye out for a sale on it sometime... it's definitely on my "buy" list now.

In a haze of smoke and colorful lights, rail officials and city leaders unveil METRO's first railcar in Houston Thursday. The car left California and arrived in Houston April 24. Officials hope the rail system will be operating in early 2004.

So rail-based mass transit is finally coming to Houston! Story at: http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/1892828

PS -- we already have buses and a LOT of automobiles chugging away on our daily commutes.

Hey guys. This is my first post from my wireless connection! :party:Did you change the settings from the default, very insecure, ones? In particular, set the SSID to something unique, turn off SSID broadcast, and enable 128 bit WEP encryption with a unique key. Otherwise your neighbors might gain access to your network!

Trevor, are you saying you would be the DM? If so, weigh that decision carefully, not only possible out of town travel, but also the money part. For you with 2 girls that you actually want to see grow up, that's the major consideration, in addition to already being settled, I would think.

Lastly, remember this. If they ask once, you better have your final decision ready if it's yes or no, because they may not ask a second time down the line...

Kevin P

Well Jeff without WEP anyone within 100-odd feet of your house can snoop your packets, or connect to your network. The slowdown is probably negligible for most applications. 802.11b is a lot faster than broadband internet access anyway.

Not just neighbo(u)rs but "drive by hackers" could access your network as well.

Lex,,No DM position for me.
Your right though,it's on the road way to much.
DM's are about 7-10 years older than me.
I am one of the youngest managers running a large store in the
company though,,so the position of a DM in the future has been discussed.
The mention of moves have come about through other DM's asking me if I would be willing to move into their Districts..
I don't want to move at this time,,very happy as to where I am now.
As long as the store is meeting goals and the associates are happy , I can stay as long as I want.
If I screw up , then a move would be manditiroy,,that usually gets you a demotion to a smaller store or a step down..
No need to worry now,,Got to pay off that Vette!! ;)

Well I think after doinga little more research I'm either going to get another256 meg stick or a 512 stick since there's little to gain going above 512 according to several reports I've read ( the one on cruical is good and if anyone would be slanted towards more memory it would be them:))

That's sure the way the articles and memory selection guidance charts on the Crucial site come across. Unless you ware going to get into 3D graphics or heavy duty modelling, 512 MB looks like their max recommendation. (Which is a relief, because that is what my current computer has, so I'm not in the market for an upgrade.) :>) If you do get into those ultra-memory-intensive apps, 1 gig wouldn't be enough anyway -- they recommend 2 gig and up for those.

So you are probably better off, as you've concluded, to just add on to what you've got installed already. If the price difference isn't very much, and your motherboard will allow use of unequal sized memory sticks, then having the "headroom" of the larger one wouldn't hurt, it just wouldn't give you really dramatic performance gains above what the other one would yiled. (Obviously if the price difference is enough to really notice, go with the cheaper one.)

I have a Denon 1600 DVD-A player in my rack now

You've definitely got that base covered, then. (But do your Rotel friends know?) :>)

I'd always heard that windows 98 or lower could only benefit from 512. But 2000 or even the XP virus could benefit from more memory. I like my 1024 on my desktop myself. :)

I think Lex is correct.
Windows XP takes advantage of the extra memory.
Seems 1 gig of memory is the standard when browsing Computer tweak sites etc..

My personal experience shows a quicker loading of pictures with the extra memory.
My 1500+ Vette pics show up almost instantly when I click on My Pictures folder.
When I was packing 512 mb of Ram ,,they took a sustantial amount of more time to show up.
So it just depends on how bloated your computer is.

I like my 1024 on my desktop myself

We all like "more". But the question for Andrew is "would 1024 actually yield enough of a performance gain over 512 to justfy the extra expense of the higher capacity memory sticks, and the hassle of selling the existing memory stick?"

Just wondering if you had the same computer system configured with 512 before you installed the 1024 and noticed a big boost from the increase (in that same system)? Or did it start out at 1024 and therefore liking it is perhaps more the "comfort factor" of knowing that no application you plan to run could possibly run out of memory with that much installed? (Not that there is anything wrong with that.) :>)

If the price difference is negligible, then, why not get more? But if there is a steep jump in price to get 1024, then the decision should be weighed more in terms of what the real benefits are vs. what the money might go for otherwise (like important HT upgrades or more DVD-Audio discs). :>)

Just got back from a hot date, which for guys like me means seeing X-Men 2 and dinner with the wife. I liked the movie, but for some reason just had a bit of a hard time getting fully pulled into it. Good special effects and everything, I just think it was more of a good entertaining thriller than a thorough storytelling blockbuster. I'd give it a B or B+.

Claude, believe it or not, I actually saw that Porsche GT prototype in person. I toured the Porsche factory two years ago in Stuttgart, Germany, and happened to be there as they were rolling it out of the factory to send to the Paris Auto Show that year. It was beautiful, with suede seats. The center console rose at an angle so that the shifter was at the same height as the steering wheel. More ergonomic for shifting, anyways.

Hey Trevor I got the Vette out last week but unfortunatly as I type this it's snowing outside "BUMMER"
http://www.corvettemagazine.com/2002/august/widebody/rear.jpg
Here's the view the German sports car drivers will see of this Vette

Rich makes it clear he is a responsible driver and does not have the skills required to take this car to its limits, either in the quarter-mile or top speed. Off the bat, we’ll say 0-60 is about three hundredths of a second under three seconds - at 2.97. With the beefed up automatic, all you need to do is aim, floor the pedal, and hang on. One thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three, end of story.
For the quarter, Rich looks to another 427 twin turbo LPE car, also automatic, and just like his, but without the wide body. In the hardtop, this LPE built car ran a 9.36 at 151.7, Rembold remembers.
As for top speed, according to Rich, "They have estimated the top speed at over 240 mph."
Rembold also gave us a peek inside LPE. "I was told by the folks at Lingenfelter that they have something known as Project 255. The old Sledgehammer Corvette turned a closed-course speed record at 254.7. That’s probably the reason for 255."
We get it. As for the tune of the particular car, Rich does not know. However, he has offered his silver Wide Body.
For now, Rich and his wife are content to show their awesome wide body Corvette and to occasionally "fracture" the speed limit. Cars this fast don’t just break the limits. CM.com

Burke!!
The Flipster!!

Well, everyone's got to have SOMETHING to live for. :>) But, with the "only-two-flips-in-a-row" rule in effect, someone else gets to take us to the next page in a few minutes... :>)

I like your Avatar
You've noticed that? It's called "Polar bear in a snow storm". :>)

believe it or not, I actually saw that Porsche GT prototype in person

Did they let you sit in it, or was it a view from a distance, surrounded by armed guards? :>) Way cool, either way.

The center console rose at an angle so that the shifter was at the same height as the steering wheel. More ergonomic for shifting, anyways.

Years ago, most cars had the shifter at the same height as the steering wheel (usually mounted on the steering column). But that was soon passe when "four on the floor" became all the rage on sporty cars. And not long thereafter, virtually all cars had floor or low console mounted shifters. Interesting that now the futuristic showcars are moving it back up to sterring wheel height...

Chris D

Burke- No, unfortunately, nobody was sitting in it. It had attracted quite a bit of attention with the factory workers, and had a nice little crowd around it, everybody interested, of course.

Claude- Whoa... that's some serious statistics. Are you sure though that the actual rated 0-60 time is under 3 seconds? We're talking Maclaren times or better there--pretty serious stuff. My current sports car monster I estimate as just under 4 seconds, which I consider VERY respectable. Although the higher speeds are robbed by the all wheel drive powertrain and vehicle weight, my quarter mile times are somewhere around 11 seconds. Anything more than that would just be overly optimistic right now.

Oh yeah, I bought tickets for the Matrix Reloaded already, for an advance screening. The release is 15 May, but my show is for 10PM on May 14th. Not a midnight screening for some reason. Okay by me! I can't WAIT for that one!!!!!

Andrew I sit with Burke's camp...I guess it all depends on what you are doing. Run performance monitor for a while on 512MB and plot your weekly memory usage...If you are getting into swap space I'd say go whole hog...but I'm not sure what your computer usage is. Play alot of games, do 3D design or CAD, run a database that supports 1000's of users and needs to process several milion transactions persecond then ya a Gig or more. Browse the internet, type email, VPN into work...512 MB or 768MB should do.

Heck my development box at work only has 384MB on it and that's more than sufficient to work in C and Oracle's tools ;)

Drive by hacking....didn't realize what I wrote to you guys jumped all over it. I guess it does sound silly but if you read several trade magazines this term has come up on more than 1 occasion and is a real concern in the industry where corporations are setting up several WAPs. I guess the term will be funny until you wireless guys suffer identity theft and then it won't be so HA HA funny...more like  :x

They're having an anniversary sale in MAY so you may want to hold off and see what price you can work out. From what I understand, once they get some new blood in there then they can concentrate on keeping the website more up to date.

Hey PC experts, I noticed while I'm surfing on my laptop that the CPU fan is kicking on more often than usual. Most of the time it only kicks in if I'm doing something CPU intensive, it almost never goes on while I'm just surfing, but it's been kicking on and off regularly. When I go into task manager there's nothing that's using any amount of CPU--I don't run SETI or anything on my laptop, but something is making the CPU (PIII-M) warmer than usual. Maybe my updated WPC11 driver? Can't imagine why that would make the CPU warm. Any ideas from the peanut gallery?

Saw a few nice toys at Costco but no SODIMM's. They had two external devices that I was looking at...one was a USB2 80 gig harddrive and the other was a USB2 CDRW drive. I could use both to do back ups on both machines here which would be nice but there's a good chance that I'll be able to pick up one of our old servers from work that will have a couple of SCSI drives in it that I might use as file servers and a backup site. I've got a tape back up of my current config so that might be all I really need.

Couple of questions to trouble shoot..

1) Are you surfing outside..If the temp is warm outdoors it may create a bit of extra heat to the casing,,especially if your legs are all sweaty.

Hey Guys!!

Bought a couple of previously veiwed movies from Rodgers Video.
$9.99 for Scooby Doo upon opening did have a few scatches , but nothing serious.
$12.99 for Van Deisel's XXX , which the disc is pretty much prestine!!
Never purchased previously viewed before but was impressed on the condition for the price.
Of course the boxes are in mint condition since they never hit the counter shelfs. The discs go right into a seperate rental seciruty case when they hit the shelfs for renting.

Picked up some rubberized gasket material to install under the keyboard of the DeLL 8500. Looking again at Bings instructions I think it shouldn't be too difficult.
I think i just may attempt the install tonight!!

I have to put on Scooby now for the girls,,They love Scooby Doo almost as much as they love their Barbies..

What's everybody else doing tonight.

Good Morning Guys!!

Hope everybody is enjoying this fine weekend.
Yesterday was a good day, however today doesn't look so great.
Very cloudy , windy and only +5 C,,just nasty cold.

Well the keyboard is rock solid and really does change the percieved build quality of the DeLL Notebook.
Only thing is now my keyboard is very unlevel with a bulge towrds the middle. Still better than being springy.
Hats off to Bing for coming up with the idea..And brave at that.
When I was taking of the top peice to get at the keyboard..I was thinking to myself..I would never do this on my own decision,as it felt like the thing was going to snap in half, I would have stopped right there! ..Knowing that it has been done though, I was able to continue on.
I wonder what was going through Bings mind when he proceeded with taking apart his Golden Goose .

Where is Bing anyways,,Sure he went to Calgary, but he took his 8500 with him, so he should be able to pop in and tell us about Cam's HT..!
For that Bing gets one of these.. :wedgie: :smackbutt:
And for good measures one of these :nutkick:
:tomato: :tomato:

We had a nice dinner out, I gave her a bracelet, we went home, played with the cats and went to bed. Did you already know that!

Kevin,,I did , except about the part of playing with the cats..Well I had a different Cat in mind.

Greg..Glad we could get your blood flowing on this fine Sunday Morning..
Now if George would just pop on by!! :boobies:

Well,,The bulge in the keyboard was bugging the heck out of me,,so I took it apart again, thinking that maybe the two peices of rubber celliod over laped in the center or something of that nature.
This wasn't the case. what happened was that there was a wire from a fan or something that was sitting under the keyboard. I tucked it away , put everything back together and POOF ,,she is good to go.
The bulge is gone from the center. I don't think that the Keybord is completely flat and level, but it is straight enough to meet my satisfactions, plus I don't really want to have to take it apart again..

Now I can move on to bigger and better things,,

Afternoon folks on this :sn -y Sunday afternoon! I'm out on the picnic table typing this message on my laptop (and no, my keyboard doesn't have a bulge in it, could that be caused by too many babe pictures saved on it???? Huh? Huh?) :hump:

I remember when Joey hung around the forums more he'd have stories like this, I wish he was still around! Anyway, the restaurant we went to last night is known to be haunted. :E Although I didn't see anything, I had this strange sensation from time to time when we were at our table, like a feeling of disorientation or slight dizziness. Sometimes it would be strong, sometimes weak, but I never felt it before we arrived or after we left. I wonder if I was somehow picking up the ghost's energy or something. One other time when a co-worker and I went to the same restaurant (it is next door to a place we used to take classes at) I felt something, like "we aren't alone" around the stairs we went up. Pretty bizarre stuff! 8O Hmm.. maybe I should save a copy of this and post it around Halloween time! ;)

Later folks... KJP

Well I found a local source for cheap SODIMMs (Office Depot) so I picked up a 512 stick for $216 cdn tax incl:T I took my notebook, a screwdriver and my wireless card along for the ride and installed the ram in the parking lot to make sure the Dell was ok with the cheaper brand and it works great so I now have 768 megs which should be plenty for what I'm doing and should I need to upgrade later I won't be stuck with two 256 megs sticks.

Since I had my wireless card with me ;) I decided to take a short detour on the way home and just happened to end up near Jeff's driveway  I believe he's going to be tightening up his security shortly  To bad his PC's weren't turned on or I could have had some real fun :B

Although I didn't see anything, I had this strange sensation from time to time when we were at our table, like a feeling of disorientation or slight dizziness.

Since you say you experienced that feeling only while at the restaurant, I guess we can rule out a buzz from wine (or whatever) with dinner. Perhaps you were caught up with the celebratory emotion of the moment and got a little giddy from it (although, if you've never experienced the phenomenon elsewhere, during other celebratory moments, that is less likely to be it).

Or, since mild allergic reactions can somtimes cause symptoms like you describe, you may have been experiencing an allergic reaction to something local to the restauant environment that you would not normally encounter in your own day-to-day surroundings. Like something in the food. Or the perfume a waitress was wearing, or air freshener they were using in the back but got carried through the ventilation system. It is hard to predict where we might encounter something our systems are senstive to, especially if we don't have a "history" of known allergies.

Or, maybe it could have been the ghosts just waiting to reveal themselves to you, but not finding the right moment to do so.... that is by far the explanation that would sell more books if you wrote it up after figuring out a few more creepy Stephen-King-story-like details to punch it up a bit. :>)

Anyway, it sounds like you folks had a good time. Glad it was an enjoyable evening for you !

hehe ... instead, you'll be struck with a 256 and a 512, since if you go beyond what you have now in a meaningful way, you'll probably want two 1024 sticks to replace it all. :>) Looking at the bright(er) side, you'll probably need a new computer before you'll need another memory upgrade. :>)

It wasn't the food either, as I felt it before we ate anything. And (perhaps because I don't drink), I don't tend to get dizzy or disoriented when I get "giddy" or whatever (well, maybe during some really good :hump: but I think we can rule that out as well!) ;)Or, since mild allergic reactions can somtimes cause symptoms like you describe, you may have been experiencing an allergic reaction to something local to the restauant environment that you would not normally encounter in your own day-to-day surroundings. It is hard to predict where we might encounter something our systems are senstive to, especially if we don't have a "history" of known allergies.I doubt it was an allergy to anything. The feeling was sporadic, it would come and go. Sometimes it would come on suddenly. It felt a little like the disoriented feeling you get when you're on a boat and it's rocking, even though I was seated and not moving.Or, maybe it could have been the ghosts just waiting to reveal themselves to you, but not finding the right moment to do so.... that is by far the explanation that would sell more books if you wrote it up after figuring out a few more creepy Stephen-King-story-like details to punch it up a bit. :>)And that explanation makes for a far more interesting TTP post! :)

I guess I'll have to visit more haunted places (or that restaurant) more often to see if it happens again. Perhaps it was nothing, who knows. I have an open mind about such things so I'm not saying it is or isn't something in particular until I have some sort of proof (like if the ghost joined in with the crew singing "Happy Birthday" to Heather)

Gordon- Oh, no! One of the things I appreciated the most about the Matrix was that is was a very deep movie. It went way beyond the groovy action, bringing in a lot of philosophy, religion, and even physics. There were so many allegories to the Bible, Alice in Wonderland, Plato and Aristotle, etc. I do hope they don't screw it up here in the following movies!

Guess I'll have to go see The Matrix Reloaded and find out what variuos folks are finding so confusing about it. The first one set the bar very high, and our expectations might have been raised a bit too high (although I will not be "high" while watching it). :>) The real test will be in our own viewing -- I think this is one we should see for ourselves and decide whether we like it, or not rather than depending very much on anyone elses' commentary in advance. (However, I'll have to admit if the movie is as disjointed as at least a couple of the trailers looked, the advance buzz may be right.)

Andrew,,What type of Ram did you get with your DeLL? Same as Bings?

BTW,,Lots of DeLL buddies here.
We will have to start up a club!!
I gave up the Sony Notebook to Tracey, so she now has her own little personal wireless websurfer, MP3 downloader..

Bring on the widescreen pictures,,I don't mind at all!!
In fact I encourage it immensely.

Jeff,,The material was bought at Can Tire.
$10.50 for a 4 pack, which included other material types , however one was the stuff we needed...
Just wait..OK,,I am back.
2 pce were Cork-Rubber
1 Pce Rubber-Fibre
1 Pce Rubber Cellulose, this is the one we need according to Bing.
Tracey picked this up for me as she was out and i asked to look for it..So not sure if it could have bought in a different pack.
Anyways''The Rubber Cellulose is blue ,,I hope cause that's the one I used.,,If not then I used the Rubber Fibre..:E
Bottom line is it worked and my keyboad hasn't caught fire.

I am very happy with the 8500 so far.

Morning all! :later:

Sorry for not checking in over the weekend, but Cam and I were busy... It was his birthday and his wife Nicole called me up as a surprize to Cam. She gave Cam and I a helicopter ride/ tour of the Canadian Rockies and Columbia Icefields. Unfortunely due to the snow and low ceiling we could not take off so we have rescheduled for some sunny day in June, July :( I was totally looking forward to the ride of the chopper and the Porsche Boxster through the Rockies.... Soon :) So we just hung around town.

Cam's theater is one awesome set up. The new Stewart Films Firehawk screen is simply awesome! We watched movoes, and played PC games on it seeing as we couldn't fly. We played Ghost recon in his theater room with him on the HTPC and I on my Dell 8500, it was fun to be able to see what each other was seeing. We had Nicole directing tactical and watching the operations from the elevated back couch :)

I surprized Brook as well and we had a nice dimsum lunch on sunday.. It's nice seeing her. She just got her porfolio submitted for ACAD art school in Calgary. I hope she is accepted.

Trev, that Sony LCD looks to be the ticket, better order one :)

Good job on getting the keyboard fixed on your Dell...

My memory from Dell is CAS 2 Nanya, my memory from Crucial is CAS 2.5. I'm glad I only bought a 256mb stick of the CAS 2.5 stuff. Had I known the Dell was using CAS 2, I wouldn't have bought the Crucial, but owell, here I am. I'll keep my eye peeled for some CAS 2.0 stuff

Got my internal Bluetooth wireless card, but those Cheap bastards at Dell didn't send the connecting cord with it.. Bastards! So after a few calls, they are sending it out, after i insisted that I was not going to pay shipping on a two bit item that they should have included in the first place. :smackbutt:

Picked up a set of these while I was at Compusmart in Calgary, not what I was really looking for, but the price was right... The boom mic is really cool, and it comes with 4 diferent colered inserts. I have the Blue installed. A person can always use extra head phones but I would really like a set of bluetooth headphones and then I'd be smiling :)

http://www.logitech.com/lang/images/0/1566.gif

Don't be swayed by those Dell gaming rigs Trev, remember you can always build one that is just as fast if not better than the Dell XP for cheaper, well, maybe not cheaper, but more custom.

OK, gotta get ready for work....

Later :later:

I had a great weekend. Cleaned house, invited my dad, bro, uncles and a friend over to watch the Oscar De La Hoya fight. Sunday was also productive. Worked on the landscaping and picked up some patio furniture we bought from somebody. A couple of hours later my aunt and uncle show up with patio set as a house warming presend. Anyway almost lunch time, hope everyone has a great Monday.

Howdy howdy howdy folks!! I finally get to post my morning rants, er greetings! :p:

Well, the first thing I should ask is for a moment of silence for the Old Man of the Mountain (http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/whites/old_man.html), a well known NH landmark which collapsed over the weekend. Here's a picture of how it looked:

http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/whites/skookumchuck/om4.jpg

It's an outcropping of rocks that looks like the profile of a face, hence its name. It's been held up with cables for the past century, but nature took its course and the structure finally gave out. CNN article (http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/Northeast/05/03/old.man.mountian.ap/index.html)

You know it's OSIM when you get rear-ended on the way to work. 8O   I was at a stop sign waiting for the traffic to clear, and I inched out a little to see if anyone else was coming and stopped again, and the truck in back of me thought I was going so he went, and smacked me in the rear. Fortunately only our bumpers hit and there was no damage, so after a quick once over we were on our way. The last thing I need right now is to have something happen to my car!

When I got into work I was recruited to help the IT group update all the PCs in the classroom with IE 6, XML 4.0 and Acrobat Reader 5.1, so I was hopping this morning, hence my tardiness in posting here. Of course when you install anything there are 27 critical updates and security fixes that have to be downloaded and installed as well, good old Mickeysoft...

My dad called, asking me if I wanted to move to Georgia. I asked him what it was for, and he said that a cousin might have an opening for a programmer or something down there, and for me to send a resume down. I'll do that tonight. It probably won't lead to anything (I would never be so lucky) but I don't want to pass up the opportunity either. It isn't Florida but hey it's warmer than NH!

Later folks... KJP

Bing -- Sounds like a heck of a weeknd even without the chopper ride... that's something to look forward to on a sunny June day (which isn't that far away). Better to be on the ground and safe than scattered over the mountainside due to a flying mishap in stormy weather!

Eduardo -- I'm sure that your place looks even more spiffy after all the work outside. If you enjoy landscaping that much, I know of a yard that could use some next time you have a little free time in Houston. :>) Burke seems to have gone flip crazy too. I'll say some more about the flipping a little later on...

Kev -- you never know where opportunity might be -- Georgia may not be Silicon Valley, but after the DOT COM bust, that's probably a good thing. :>) It'll be interesting to hear if anything comes of it. Good luck!

As for the temperature difference between Forida and Georgia, one Christmas during the time I was growing up in Minnesota, our family went to visit relatives in Georgia for the holdays. It was 70 degrees F (21.1 C) outside when we stopped for lunch on the way in northern Georgia. My sister and I were running around without our jackets, since by our statndards, it was "summer". But the local people coming into the restaurant were complaining about how COLD it was outside and wishing they had heavier coats! I knew right then that I wanted to live someplace where 70 degrees was considered cold. :>)

e - sounds like you are making good progress with school -- you'll have a real reason to celebrate toward the end oif September!

I spent most of my time the last couple of years doing upland field inspectsion fo various sorts so I wasn't in wetlands per say...and the last two years I spent a lot of time driving from one project to the next so I put on an average of 300-500 KM per day on my truck.

Burke - how often do you refresh your browser? You on fire with all your flips. I don't necessarily enjoy doing yard work but it has to get done. I also like getting my hands dirty.

Kevin - I've been in the same type of car accident. Fortunately we had the same outcome too. Also I've been upgrading a laptop in the office. MS critical updates totalling over 56 MB.

Bing - Cool weekend. I love helicopters. My uncle would take us for rides when I was growing up. He owned a crop dusting business (literally made millions $). Now he travels a lot and drives a Yellow Corvette Convertible. The american dream. 8)

Pr@ - figure I'll let you know first but I plan on getting the Rotel.

E - Welcome back. So when you graduate you'll have your MBA? Good for you. I still need to finish getting my BA.

Trev - don't work to hard during your holiday.

Mats - Great Bullwinkle Avatar.

Burke - how often do you refresh your browser?Ever since I got Opera for a song, :>) my browser has been refreshing ME ! :>)

You on fire with all your flips.
A lot of luck with good timing. Actually I've missed a few because of occasionally slow refreshes and the fact that for some reason the cookies are not remembering my user name and password. (I've checked the box in the Profile area but when I go back to look, it is unchecked again.) They remember what threads I've accessed and all the other stuff that doesn't require me retyping something every damned time. :>)

But I have to type in my user name and password every time I try to post or edit a post. And if I mistype either one, of course, it tells me "Sorry -- you are not the author of this post" and I have to go back and wait while it refreshes a zillion embedded images in the edit panel before I can correct the mistake.

So it is a wonder I've managed to snag any flips at all, much less be able to break the record for number of flips in a TTP edition. (Just thought I'd mention that in case no one else has been counting.) :>) Actually the added challenge has made it a little more "fun", if aggrevating at times. Also, I've tried to come up with flip graphics that aren't the same thing every time, and with so many, that gets to be a challenge too.

I have outlets along the side wall in case I need them, two behind the curtain and it would be easy to add some along the common wall with the shop so I think I'll be ok:) I will need at least one more for the PJ but I might just run an extension cord over for that instead of wireing up a plug in the ceiling...though having a false ceiling makes that much easier then if I'd dry walled it.

Nice flip graphic Burke! I have spend a lot of time in and around the Lake Louise area, hiking, camping, skiing... Generally we go once or twice a year. That is Victoria glacier in the background. What you can't see is that the lake is fed by six glaciers that come into the mouth of the lake by the foot of Victoria glacier. If you hike to the back area you arrive at the Plain of Six Glaciers and you can see it in all it's glory!

Well, it looks like the merger/reorganization will be complete on May 15. Crossing my fingers as to whether I'll still have a job after then. Still nobody hiring around these parts. I may wind up parking in people's driveways with my wireless card to do my TTP posting in a few months

Glad people got a kick out of my ghost story. Just remember Trev, the rest of us are not on "holidays", so please run the graphics through the clean room before posting... I'd really rather not have to many in my work machine hard drive memory locations showing to much. I'm sure there's others that feel the same.

You guys do know that just because you delete something, doesn't mean it's gone, right? It's only gone when something is written over that precise memory location, and usually more than once. Without programs designed to do that, you can never know if it's truly gone, even if you delete it. So, it stays there, and with a complete machine audit, it could spell trouble for some... Windows only deletes the logical index to a file, it doesn't actually delete the bytes of any file off the drive. It just deletes the physical drive location from the index and declares that memory as free for use again in the system. But even writing over it once or twice, still doesn't mean it's gone.

I'm being totally honest here folks, so please think about that before posting to graphic an image during week or even on a page that rolls to Monday.

If you post an image after hours for us to see during the week that's risky, please convert it to a link by the end of the evening, with a warning for opening it.

A little paranoid there Lex? ;) I doubt most any company would go through the trouble of searching deleted disk space for "evidence" unless they believed that there was criminal activity taking place. So as long as you're not suspected of anything like that you should be safe if you clear out your cache and history periodically. I for one run stealth, but I also have IE set up to clear cache and history automatically.

You can get utilities that will "wipe" out unused disk space, or any files you specify, so that they can't be easily recovered. Some of them will do multiple wipes but this is overkill IMHO. To retrieve data that has been overwritten is expensive and requires sending the drive out to a data recovery specialist. IMHO the biggest risk at work is having one of those pics up on your screen and having someone walk by, and the SIMG tags or stealth takes care of that little problem!

So take reasonable precautions and you should be ok. Hmm... maybe I should offer a server version of my Stealth(tm) technology (for a reasonable price  ) and have Mats install it on the HTG server... :)

Ok ok ok guys, I'm not just thinking of me here. I'm not the only one that could be impacted. But working for a government organization, who can put anything past them? If they want to nail your butt, 2-3K disc recovery is chicken scratch. Fact is, they've probably got people right here that can seize and examine discs. Actually, it's been done at the top of the organization before. I can't say if they used an external agency or did it internal. I don't know.

Again, sexy pics are ok, but avoid showing major parts. Evenings and weekends only on that, and don't leave it for next work day. I have spoken on this. Ca Pish?

Actually, I should upload my latest build with the bug fix I made last week. :)Lex - screw work. I say all work places should have topless female Messsagers. ;)I keep telling Heather that she should go to work for my company as a massager. She's good at it, and it would improve morale. Topless would be a bonus too 8O ;) Too bad my company's too cheapskate. You never know you may be sensitive to ghosts. spookyCould be... I'm not in "haunted" places often enough to know if I'm sensitive or not. In fact this particular restaurant is the only place I've been to where I knew it was haunted. I picked it in hopes that I might experience something there, and it looks like I may have gotten my wish! :E BTW, I posted my experiences on another forum (not a HT one, one that people post paranormal experiences on) and some of the responses indicate that I'm not the only one who has experienced something like that! 8O Now I'm wishing I brought my camera, I might have picked something up in the infrared mode or something.

I want to see images Kevin, but I want them to be reasonable. If a woman is in a thong, angled side ways, that's one thing, but bare butted in your face, that's an entirely different thing.

Trevor, George can be taken care of with tasteful shots. That girl in the bakini sitting down that Kevin put up a while back was about as s#xy as anything I've seen in a while. S#xy isn't just about what's shown, it's about how it's not shown and shere beauty. Go to far and it just becomes trashy. I'm sorry, but trashy is NOT what we are about here. If that's how it goes, well, I'll have to take further action.

Sorry to be the grinch today guys, but there has to be limits for those of us that surf at work, and before I shut off graphics with stealth, I won't view TTP at all during the day, that's how it has to be. I have to maintain image access for other areas of the forum.

I did not mean to turn this into a brow beating. But I thought it was pretty clear before that things have to remain tasteful during the work week/day. Yes, again, leaving risky stuff up at night for the next work day is not good.

I'm not saying anything else on this subject. But if things get out of hand with this in the future, what will wind up happening is TTP becoming password protected or no images of women allowed.

Having a bad day Lex? Or did Trev's last images go over the line (I have stealth so I didn't see them). Maybe we need to reinstate that password protected area for the b@be pics, and just post pics of blue toothed computers and Corvettes (and Audi A4s!) here in TTP.

Stealth is easy to turn on and off if you wanted to use it for TTP viewing and still have images elsewhere. You can also configure the proxy to not stealth but to block images from sites other than htguide, that would take care of your problems as well. Download it and give it a try, it's very configurable. Its original purpose in life was to control annoying banner ads and things like that, so even if you don't enable the stealth feature it might still be useful to you.

Have any of the pics I posted gone over the line? Sometimes it's hard to judge what is acceptable and what isn't... maybe I'll just stick with cute harmless fuzzy kittens for my flip pics ;)

Hello, hello? (tap tap tap)... is this thing on? Anyone here? Bueller?

I just dropped Joey6P an email to see what he's up to. TTP just isn't the same without him, even if I have ghost stories to tell now! :) I don't have much in the way of J6P stories though other than the occasional "forgetting to turn on the sub during a movie" moment...

Oh, speaking of "moments"... I had an Office Space flash-back moment today! The guy I do the HT installation stuff with borrowed my cordless drill over the weekend, and he brought it back. I picked up the drill to take it out to my car. As I held the drill in my hand, while sitting in what passes for a cubicle in this place, well I'm sure anyone who's seen Office Space can imagine what scene popped into my head at that moment. Look out folks, there's a virus going around that masquerades as a Blue Mountain greeting card. I discovered it when I was checking my home email.

The message looks like this:Subject: Hi, I sent you an eCard from BlueMountain.com
Message:
To view your eCard, open the attachment
If you have any comments or questions, please visit http:/ /www.bluemountain.com/customer/index.pd
Thanks for using BlueMountain.com.
Attachment: BlueMountaineCard.pif

The virus is called W32.HLLW.Cult.C@mm, and here is a link to Symantec's writeup (http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.hllw.cult.c@mm.html).

Real e-card greetings point you to a link on their website, they don't include attachments that have to be run. So make sure to keep an eye out if you get any BlueMountain greeting cards in your email, they may not be what you think! 8O

No Kevin, not a bad day at all. I just know if I don't nip this in the bud, it will only get worse. It wasn't the one picture at all. I told you guys we had to chill during the work week some, and keep things calm.

But this is a home theater forum first, TTP is second. With that in mind, our guiding thoughts must be to what makes us a better home theater forum, not a better off beat site. Ok gents...let's start a new chapter of TTP...help me push this mother forward! Well, we've just got two more pages to go, but someone else is going to have to flip us over... I'm retiring from the flipping public service for a while to spend more time with my family and pursue private business interests. :>) (That's a paraphrase of what a lot of politicians say when they retire from public office. Only they leave out the "flipping" from their press releases.) :>)

I've been playing with VBS again today:) While my main machine was crunching code I set to work to see if I could write a script to connect my notebook to the network drives when I plug into the network here. So I came up with a neat little script that goes out and checks my IP address to see if it starts with two digits and if so logs me in and connects my drives. I'm going to have it check to see if I'm connected at home and log those drives instead and vise versa so it should work slick. I'm beginning to really like scripting

Kevin how do I get a script to automatically run when I shut down XP? I want it to disconnect any network drives I have so that the next time I boot my logon script can connect any drive it needs without having to worry about other drives already been connected etc.

Pr@ there may be utilities out there that will run a script at shutdown, but my suggestion is to have your script map your network drives so that they aren't remapped every time you log on (when you do it from explorer you have the check box where you can select "Reconnect at logon"). When you map the drive make sure you don't select that option, and then you'll start with a clean slate every time you log on.

Morning folks, on this... uh... Wednesday  I was going to say sunny Wednesday but it isn't sunny here today ;)

Wow, Lex, who needs b@be pics when you have her? You must be a proud papa. Look out, the guys will be a-knocking ;) Don't they always take a :loser: to the prom? ;)

Pr@, you VBScript geek you... you probably know more about scripting than I do... today's project is to write a java app that scans a database for records with a certain status older than a certain date and email them to someone. I got the email piece figured out yesterday, today's will be a crash course in JDBC :) I've done it before but in existing systems where the infrastructure was in place already. I have to do it from scratch in this one! 8O

We might make it to 101/TTP X today? :E

I got that blue mountain virus again this morning. It's a pain when you can't figure out who's sending it. If I keep getting it I'll have to call comcast and have them look it up and notify the culprit since I only have an IP address, no valid email address of the sender. Hey get this, Norton's known about this virus for a month now, but I couldn't find any info on it on Mcafee's site, so I forwarded the email to my Hotmail account and scanned it there using their Mcafee scanner, and it didn't detect it! I guess it's a good thing I use Norton! 8O

I went to one of our customer's houses last night to help them set up their system to work with their new HDTV cable box. They have a Mits HDTV similar to mine (55", mine is 46"), and wow, after I converged that puppy HDTV looked like I was looking out a window  We watched a little of Summer Catch on HBO and it was like 8O . DD 5.1, widescreen and all, way cool! Too bad they only have like 4 HD channels so far, but they should be adding more down the road.

Oh well, I guess that's it for this morning's post. Later folks... KJP

Kevin I could do that in VBS fairly easily...try looking under Enterprise Scripts here (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/scriptcenter/Default.asp) it might help point you in the right direction since VBS and Javascript are so similar....or just code it in VBS:)

Now this is wild... I logged into my attbi email over the web so I could delete the virus email from there, and while I was there I went into the screened mail folder, which where their spam filter drops filtered messages in to, and I found 11 more copies of that virus, dating back to 4/28. Their spam filter has been catching most of them (going to one of my addresses), but now I'm getting them on the other address and it's not filtering those. Bizarre. Symantec rates this threat "low", having received few submissions, and Mcafee and F-Secure have no information on it whatsoever! 8O

I posted an email on a security mailing list about the virus I've been getting, and getting all kinds of great information back from other folks... according to Mcafee it isn't a mass mailing worm but instead a backdoor trojan, a variant of Sdbot in fact Pr@ (remember that one?), that allows a hacker on IRC to send commands to your computer, and one of the things they can tell it to do is email itself out. That could be why I'm getting copies sent from many different IP addresses... Well, I'll keep on researching this little beast and I'll post more info as I find out about it. In the meantime watch out for emails claiming to be Blue Mountain e-cards... :E

My AC is acting kind of funny and I have an appointment next Monday. As long as my AC is OK or need only minor maintenance then I can get the Rotel. Damn I hate being responsible.
Good luck on that AC situation. A couple of years ago, my AC system wasn't cooling very well, so I called out a heavily advetised company to have someone come out and put freon in the system. Immediately after getting out of his truck, before the dude even set foot on my property, much less even saw the system, he said; "Looks like you might need a new coil for that AC system." Although he did puty in thfreon, he wasn't really there to provide service, he was there to sell me a coil (since he kept mentioning that and handed me brochures about them) -- without even checking to see if that was really needed or if anything else was wrong with the system! He did go uup in the attic and pointed to rust-like deposits on the coil as if that was proof of hius point. All coils get that -- proves nothing.

A couple of months later, a lightning strike close by in the neighborhood sent a surge through the power line that fried the AC -- the big capacitor on the control unit basically exploded. At that point, I knew that more freon wouldn't fix it. So when a different technician came out and said he could repalce the control unit, but Ireally needed a whole new system, pointing oput a number of other things that had been damaged, I got seven bids for replacement of the entire system (did not call that first company back for a bid, however).

The estimator from the AC company that is highly praised on the local public radio equivalent of "tool time" was almost as bad as the dude who wanted toi sell me the coil right off the bat. He didn't measure anything, never looked at the existing thermostat before recommending it be replaced, and didn't take any notes while he was looking around, and then spent abiut ten minutes bragging about the multiple zone, bell-and-whistles laden systen he had just had installed in his home. His bid came in at almost four times what the low bid came in.

Others ranged form competent but expensive to almst as ridiculous as the first bid. Fortunately my eye doctor had recommended an outfit who had done a system for the house he and his wife were living in at the time, and another for his mother's house, plus various maintenence tasks for others he knows. They not only came in with the low bid on a full Lennox system of the proper capacity (the original system the builder put in the house wasn't really suficient to keep the whole house cool on the hottest days) but were the only ones willing to schedule the job that same week (and in Houston, waiting even a few days for AC in the summer can be gruelling). Their installation went smoothly and the system has wrked fine now for two years without incident.

Bottom line, be careful about accepting what an AC dude tells you at face value, get multiple bids if expensive work is recommended and if possible get recommendations from people you can trust for people you can trust.

Good luck!

Burke

One thing I forgot to mention about my "new" AC system (aside from the fact that it is an absolute necessity in Houston) is that, blessedly, it is quite quiet. :>) The old system, using the same ductwork, made a lot of noise. especially when cycling on or off. The new system may give an air whoosh at those points in the cycle, but the overall noise level is very low. That qualifies it as a substantial HT upgrade, since it lowered the background noise level inside the house. :>)
