I sent Rick an email not that long ago, it seemed like he'd be coming back soon. Well, we'll see.
I haven't taken the time to take many pictures lately Trev. I'll shoot the barn and the floor when they are done though since you insisted. :)
Yes, I took the week off for projects. It's the only way I can get stuff done with my busines occupying much of my weekends.

Hey Gang! Hope everyone had a great day!
Ha, Ha Trev.. I like how you always turn everything around... You really make me laugh buddy  :wedgie: I seem to recall somebody saying "ooh a USB fan.. I could really use something like that..." "oh, look a dye submination printer, I have been thinking about buying one of those..." :yesnod: I didnt buy anything today except a large Columbian Supremo coffee at the buffeteria
:coffee:
"Mr Accidently ordered a Sony F520" :hump: :amen:
Nice pictures Kevin! I always enjoy seeing more into the lives of my TTP buddies :^x
I think the only piece of equipment you should add to you DJ duties is one of those turntables so you can do that scratchy, scratchy sound.. heheh
Yeah, where is that Rick character anyway?
I absolutely love the iPod!! :yesnod: I used it all day at work today and while I was walking around the campus. It actually made the snowday much more enjoyable. It's like having your own private radio station that plays what you want, when you want and only the songs you want, with out the commercials. I have 60's, 80's, jazz, country, classic rock, rock, pop, soundtracks, comedy tracks...etc loaded into this. Its just staggering to have so much in such a small mobile package. Sound quality is awesome to ehh, depending on who made the MP3. Most times though it's awesome! Play time is said to be 11 hours, it takes 1 hour to charge it to 80% from flat, 2 hours to fully charge the Lithium polymer cell. It will even charge via the firewire cord when connected to the PC (cool)
Here are some pictures of it.
http://www3.sk.sympatico.ca/fung1/ipod.jpg
Here it is connected to the PC with the firewire cord for download.
http://www3.sk.sympatico.ca/fung1/ipod1.jpg
Here it is in action. That jog wheel is cool in that it doesn't move at all, rather it just senses you finger gliding over it.
http://www3.sk.sympatico.ca/fung1/ipod2.jpg
Note the song count, and I still have 3Gb left. Trev was trying to talk me into the 20GB model... Man that would take a life time to listen too :alol:
Additional feature the iPod has is a built in clock calender and a contacts list with phone numbers, you can even import Outlook ..etc contact vCards into the iPod. Then there is the whole portable harddrive thing. Once connected it is just like a removable external harddrive.
I should probably post a short dittley/review on it in the Tower of Power... or somewhere else.
OK, everyone, have a great night if you not already sleeping :Z

Morning folks :tired: Hey, we have Good Friday off so it's TGIF for me! :B
Now for this morning's news: this one hit a little too close to home. A murder took place about 200 yards from my house. 8O 8O Two bodies were found in a parking lot early this morning. When I left for work investigators were stopping cars and asking questions. I heard a noise early this morning (around 5 am) which sounded a little like 3 gunshots, or a car backfiring or something. I didn't realize it at the time, but apparently they were gunshots. I've been listening to the news but not a lot of information has been released yet. According to the news, someone else apparently heard 5 shots.
Here's a map I doctored up to show where this happened relative to my house:

Morning everyone. Happy Thursday.
Kev, nice shot of you and Heather. You don't like to dress up either, huh? Well, "you clean up real good' as they say here in Texas. That's really scary about the murders. I hope it turns out they were un-related to your neighborhood, at least.

TGIF - at least for me it is :D . Allison and I are taking off Friday and Monday. We're going to visit my brother in Pittsburgh.
David - great flip. I hate suits too. Ties are the worst, feels like I have choke chain around my neck.
Kevin - Wow - I've never heard you make such a comment before ;) Great pictures. You and Heather look very happy. Ahh Spring and Love is in the air. Crazy story. Lock your doors and make sure your guard cats stay alert.
Lex - Pictures would be awesome. I did the samething last year. Its hard to get everything done. Definitely not enough time in the day.
Burke - great cartoon. No doubt that HT is in the mainstream.
Bing - the iPod looks like a great toy. 8O lots o MP3s to play.

Kevin - Wow - I've never heard you make such a comment before ;)I'm guessing you're referring to the babe comments? Most of them don't phase me, and I usually just give them a quick glance when I get home from work, but that last one went off the scale so to speak 8O
In general I hate dressing up too, but I don't mind it for fun stuff. If I'm enjoying myself I forget that I'm wearing a noose around my neck. When I have to dress up for work, that really sucks since I hate work as it is, and all I can do is sit and suffer. Especially since there is no reason to dress up at work, we just sit in our cubicles tapping away at our PCs all day.You and Heather look very happy. Ahh Spring and Love is in the air.We get that comment from everyone who sees us together. We always brag about being the happiest couple in the world. As for our secret? I think not having kids has a lot to do with it, it lets us concentrate on each other (and the cats) more. :)Crazy story. Lock your doors and make sure your guard cats stay alert.I'll have to get a sign for the front yard that says "Beware of attack cats!" Although this incident occurred about 200 yards from our house, that neighborhood (mostly businesses there) is totally different from ours. I'm guessing some people got into a fight and it got violent, or something. I'll post more as the news sites release more info.

We're getting out at 3:30, yippee! Of course, if they'd emailed us earlier I could have avoided making a special trip to the bank during lunch.
Apparently the murder victims were a man and a woman, but beyond that we still don't know much. Several people heard gunshots around 4:30. I heard them but I didn't think much of them at the time. The road is still blocked off. Hopefully they'll have a neighborhood watch meeting soon where we can find out more.

I compiled unofficial flip stats. I didn't check for illegal flips other than more than 2 in a row, so I may have counted flips that were run from before 32 or something.
Burke: 14 (we need to stop him)
Kevin: 10 (Hey, I made it to 10!)
David: 9 (one was illegal due to 3 in a row)
Chris: 7
Lex: 5 (too busy making cables to flip I guess)
Trevor: 5 (too busy buying things to flip I guess)
Mats: 4
Pr@: 4 (Hey he had a baby so we'll give him a break)
Bing: 3
Sonnie: 3
EJ: 2

Congratulations... looks like you've reached your goal. According to my unoffical running tally, this is your tenth flip in this edition of TTP. (You flipped five in March -- pages 4, 35, 39, 43, 44 -- and now this is your fifth flip in April -- pages 50, 52, 64, 71, 73.)

The whole weekend is a writeoff....church, family, church, family....and you guessed it more church....darn catholics...I agree, I hate Easter. The d*mn mother in law is catholic too and that doesn't help matters any. Add to that her tendency to stick her nose where it doesn't belong and it's a recipe for a not so fun weekend. At least I'm taking Monday off from work so I can recover.

SHould have added an extra wink in there...don't hate easter...it's just hard to make any other arrangements...cause it's a lot of consecutive church compared to the usual Sunday and the occasional nooner through the week.
Kevin P
04-17-2003, 03:25 PM
But at least in Canada they do Easter on Monday so you get a holiday from work. In the USA it's on a Sunday so not only do you not get a day off from work, it blows a valuable weekend day completely out of the water. I've gotten to the point where I take the Monday after off to make up for the lost day, and to catch up on rest since I always wind up running all over the place on easter.
I'm always bored stiff when I'm at the in-laws. No TV, crappy 1-speaker "stereo" (though she actually asked about replacing it and wants my advice!), no home theater, no DVD, no CD player even, no dogs or cats, what a waste. :) Then after having Easter lunch/dinner there then it's off to MY folks for even more food! The food's good but I'm not used to eating so much so I always regret it afterward.

Kevin - good graphics. I see your being productive at work. :nutkick:
Bing - I'm glad you asked. I think the RPTV is put on hold. I'm waiting for DPL TVs to drop in price. The decision is now between the table saw/speakers or the Rotel RSX-1055. I went and looked at some nice table saws today and I also spoke to the local Rotel rep. I will be able to take home a RSX-1055 to demo next week. I'm leaning hard toward the Rotel. It will probably be easier to get a table saw later on than a new reciever. But the final decision won't be for a couple of weeks.

PS: Saw pics of your iPod Bing, very cool - welcome to the club!, I picked one up a few weeks before I took off to Australia - though it was pricey, thus far it's probably one of the best gadget-related purchases I've made. This thing flat out rocks :).

Hello TTP People!
Bing...awesome news on the 8500. My parents 5100 shipped the other day, but also with a huge window. Still haven't pulled the trigger on mine. Waiting to hear what you think... :)
So, got some new toys at the store. This is my favourite:

Man, is this a looker!! The good news is SOUNDS amazing. Probably one of the best CD players I've ever heard. Well, except for this one:
http://www.musicalfidelity.com/Images/trivista2.jpg
This IS the best sounding CD player I've ever heard. It takes CD performance to a crazy level. On the other hand, it should, considering it costs a few pennies shy of CDN$10K. :)
Anyway, Im off for supper. Ciao guys.

Agreed, the iPod is a pretty impressive geek toy! I can't believe how much I'm enjoying this thing :yesnod:
EJ, a Rotel would be cool as well. Your like me on the HDTV thang, I want a bigger screen, however I want somthing that will display 720 native so I can port my PC/Laptop to it and have it look nice and crisp. DPL TV or LCD TV is the only choice, so I guess we'll both play the waiting game.
Jeff, nice stuff! On looks alone it sounds like a million bucks 8O Good to hear the Dell 5100 shipped as well, But what's with the ballpark shipping dates?? I mean I'm getting shipping for free, but you would expect them to narrow it down to the hour and ship it over night for the standard cost of $139 CDN :321: Quite Honestly I hate Dell policies and their nebulus pricing schemes. You're absolutely right - overnight should be standard at that price. Funny that it is in fact GROUND...good Lord!! I could do down and pick it up myself, it would be cheaper and faster!!!
Andrew: the model shown there is $3K. Can't remember what the model below that is. The model above that one is almost identical in appearance, but also offers SACD for $4K. We also just got in the HIT Audio player...very nice as well for around $2K. It came highly recommended from the folks at Sonic Frontiers...they said it could compete with their old SFCD1, which was a stellar player.
Jeff, save your money on the Shanland, I think tha'ts right, they say though it looks spiffy, sound is not up to par. Maybe for mid-fi, ok, but not for high end. Go with a Rega Jupiter first. :)

Actually Lex, I'll have to beg to differ. The Shanling sounds amazing. Probably in the Top 5 of CD players I've heard. It has a wonderfully warm sound (not too warm, but definitely warmer than most) and I love a warm sound. It is very articulate, delicate, and detailed. Its one fault is a lack of drive in the bottom end. Its not a rocker. It has no authority. Could be a problem for someone who likes harder music. But for classical, jazz...anything that doesn't necessarily need 'balls' behind...it is amazing!! Combined with some tube upgrades which are en route to us, this is quite an amazing machine.
We also got the HIT player and I have to say I'm not as much of a fan of it. It has the drive that the Shanling is missing - and its got it in droves. BUT, I find the top end a bit disconcerting...too aggressive and ragged for my tastes.
Having said all that...no Shanling for me. I don't upgrade my components anymore. It is a resolution that I have managed to stick to for over a year now and plan on keeping it that way. For now, I just enjoy the toys at work! :)

To put a slightly different spin on it, :>) I prefer to use as neutral a CD transport as possible, and allow outboard DACs and/or other electronics do the magic of providing "warmth", "depth", or whatever. With that in mind, and following along the same lines as Jeff's resolution to NOT stay trapped on the upgrade treadmill, I'm using my Sony DSP-S7000 as a single play CD transport connected with a decent digital cable to the pre/pro, which has SOTA anti-jitter clocking and upsampling capabilities associated with DACs that exceed the needs of Redbook CD by a long shot. But some of those esoteric-looking CD players with killer DACs built in are nice to look at, that's for sure (almost as good as ogling a sexy model and a lot less dangerous). :>)

Burke: Nice to hear someone's trying to squash the upgrades too. Here's my take on it...
No one is gonna deny that upgrading is fun. In the past year though, I've forced myself to stop and I think its been very instructive. I think most people are just running around in circles when they upgrade. Because the system changes so much, you never get to know it intimately. I stopped upgrading because I realized one day that my system sounds _scary_ good and I'm quite happy with it as it is.
Now, one year on, are there things I can criticize? Of course, I can criticize anything. Are there things I want to change? There are _now_...but I didn't know that a year ago. My point is, by letting the system sit for awhile, I became more accustomed to its nuances and the subtle flaws I didn't notice before are more apparent. I think I'm better prepared now to upgrade, because I know more distinctly what I want.
Having said that, still no upgrades in sight. I've realized that to make any substantive improvements, much larger outlays of $$$ are required. :)
BTW, this philosophy goes totally against Trevor's, which I think is cool too. Just upgrade everything, all the time. It is much more fun! :D
Good night gentlemen.

Jeff 'n Burke, since I brought the Musical Fidelity DAC home, I have to agree, there's not much need in upgrading that part of the chain any more. BUT, that MF CD unit is one of my "if I had unlimited money" fantasies. The Shanling looks cool in a retro/sci-fi kind of way. Hey, this "when is enough, enough?" is a good idea for a post in AV Chalet. If you don't mind I'll kick it off. . .
Wow, 1014 members. New members slowed right before 1000 but now it's going strong again.

Jeff 'n Burke, since I brought the Musical Fidelity DAC home, I have to agree, there's not much need in upgrading that part of the chain any more.
In the analog-only days, a number of high end advocates argued that the first link in the reproduction chain had to be the best possible for the whole system to sound any good. They advocated spending as much as 50% of the total system price on just the turntable and cartridge (and they were talking a very substantial total system price, not the price of a Sears budget console).
Some folks even today insist that the same is true in the digital era and would advise pouring a small fortune into the CD deck, for instance. But as our experience has borne out, we actually have a choice now, either getting super-performing CD/SACD/DVD-A players and bypassing the pre/pro's processing entirely, or allocating more of our dollars to mid-stream components such as DACS or processors with superlative DACs now than before. And we can achieve sensational results either way.
I do have to chuckle, though, when I read that someone's megabuck CD player is in the shop and they just can't bear to listen to music via a lesser unit. My immediate response is "get a life"... er, I mean, "get a DAC". :>)
Burke
PS -- now that I've drafted a line on the level of investment to make in front end components, I may have to amplify my remarks in your new thread. :>)

Hey folks. Well, about finished my flooring project. It's been a good little job, I tell ya. I just need to clean some old caulk off the bottom edge of the toilet and I'm pretty much done. There is a place on the wall that needs spackling though. The molding just doesn't fit the wall to well right at the tub. Not that unusual. We may paint her bathroom soon, so that will be prep for that.
I started to load up some progress pictures and my computer locked up for some reason. It's done that a few times lately, beginning to p|ss me off!

Andrew -- that picture isn't all that bad -- the glasses make you look, ahem, "studious". And you are going to love the lightness, flexibility and durability of titanium frames. But your expression in that shot makes you look about as happy as Charles Manson after his latest parole board hearing. :>)

Morning morning morning! And it's Saturday too! Woo-hoo!
I had yesterday off from work, and was doing home theater install work. I also went over to my friend's house and tuned up his CRT PJ some--it hadn't been converged since I installed it a year ago and it needed a bit of a tune up but it's looking better now. He was showing me his new 300-disc Sony DVD changer--it's pretty cool. We then went to the house on the beach we installed a HT in last fall and got their deck speakers working, and tweaked some things on their Pronto and made sure they knew how to run everything.
Funny cartoon Burke (The 2nd one, the Bizarro one won't display probably because their site admin is a jerk and doesn't like people who use firewalls! :bash:
I heard more rumors of layoffs at work. Apparently they want to eliminate our entire I.T. department at our location. Ok, with no IT dept. who's going to keep our servers up and running? Someone 2000 miles away? I don't think so. I think they're plotting to close our location down entirely, they just don't have the balls to admit it. So for those who think I gripe too much about my job, believe me they're justified! :wedgie: :nutkick: :banghead: :bash:
Later folks, I have a niece and a nephew to buy birthday presents for (I swear, too many babies are born in April! ;) ) and a window frame to fix.
See ya... KJP

Good morning. :>) Actually, you've paid enough attention to get 4 flips already this edition. That last page stayed up well over 24 hours... last time I looked at it yesterday was sometime before 11 AM and so this morning, I was very surprised that we were still on the same page a day later... folks must have been enjoying their day off doing something besides surfing the 'net. Kevin...your fears are justified. I know exactly what you are feeling as they did the same to us last year. They were going to shut us down completely and then they changed their mind at the last minute and cleared everyone but me and an analyst. There's just 2 of us at a much, much smaller location but at least I'm working. A little busier but I can't complain too much. I know what it feels like to go through 4 months (they announced early with hopes that people would find jobs ...wasn't that nice ;) ) of trying to figure out where the next paycheck will come from especially when 3 other people and a cat are depending on it. The only thing that helped was that my wife is a teacher who is stay at home by choice and could still pick up full time because she teaches math and has good ties with the division in our area. So if I was SOL then she might have a good chance.
I feel for ya...hang in there. Don't give up hope and don't forget, as unthinkable as it might be, the U.S is a big country...you could always move. Heck come up to Canada...the job market is apparantly pretty good right now...extremely low jobless rate. If it's any consolation, the baby boomers should start to retire soon and 2004 should be the year that things turn around. But then again the analysts say that every year.
Oh an to all you wireless guys out there: :nutkick:
I writing this from my kitchen using 50ft of crossover cable. $14.97 and I can make it out to the patio. Transmission rates never waver...HA HA!

This was shot after rain, through the window of house, so it's a marginal pic: The strange then below the door is a metal plate that stays all the time, but due to the way the doors close over the flooring, you can't leave a platform mounted flat with the floor of the building for the tractor. Thus, I made a movable ramp seen there as well so I open the doors flip it up there on the edge of the subfloor, even with floor, and drive my tractor out.

Good Stuff Jeff, pull the trigger and be happy :)
Lex, nice flooring job so far!
Yeah, it took a bit to plunk my post out while I was making lunch for Katherine, thats why it's sans the proper caps and is rather breif. Anyway, it's a lot of scrolling to use one of these things to surf, and I doubt Trev would be happy with that. For getting your e-mail, and if you have absolutely nothing else, OK... maybe. Still, if your at home it's not as if you wouldn't have something else to surf with. The Ipaq just takes too much scrolling around to make any real use of it for that function. Installed is a Linksys 802.11B wireless card.

I think what would make it a bit easier is if the screen could be rotated to landscape. Scrolling would be minimized to up and down rather than side to side to side as well.

Great reveiw of the 8500.
I just hate when they are already talking about the 8600.
However I guess we will be able to upgrade to 8600 status due to
video card upgradablility..That is the most incredable news ever..!! :yesnod:
There’s little doubt that Dell’ new 8500 series is one bad-ass mofo. With plenty of horsepower to run your favorite games and sexy body-lines to match, we can think of no other current notebook we’d recommend over it. Professionals should be thrilled with its good battery-life, great display and good power to run all their office-type applications with power to spare. On the other hand, gamers should highly consider this unit if they want the best mobile platform going for today’s games – this will even be further solidified once the 8600 ships with the next-gen GPUs from ATI and NVIDIA.
It’s refreshing to see Dell drop the old design in favor of something that performs as good as it looks. Once you get yours, you’ll be the envy of your friends and work-mates.

Trev, Andrew, I'm a Palm man, that's Cam's iPAQ. We have the same thing at work, but with Cisco cards instead of the 802.11b card.
Trev, That is great news the graphics card is upgradable... See, we arn't hooped by going with a desktop replacement PC :wedgie: :T :loser:
Notice too the that the fan is in a replaceable module... Guess what I'm going to try with it... Thaz right.. OVERCLOCK! :loser:
Yes the 8500 does come with the blue KB Bezel. I'm not a big fan of the blue around the keyboard, though I don't mind it on the cover like Andrew's 5100. It actually looks very nice. Around the keyboard though is a bit "Au-fromage" Esp. if your a fan of the clean Titanium G4 PowerBook/iBook.
http://www.gadgetguru.com/10160115.jpg http://www.oas.uci.edu/office/G4_Powerbook.jpg
How Clean is that??? No wonder Apple wins so many designer awards. My iPod is just a marvel of industrial design, which in fact it won an award for.
The 8500 looks deadly on the outside, but that blue bezel kinda brings it down a notch in my eyes. I would have prefered it to just be brushed silver like the Dell bar on the lid.
We didn't get to the car show, Cam and I just hung out and chilled. Man I miss having him around. This is how good of a buddy he is... He just got that new Stewart Film Screen "FireHawk" for his DLP projector and asked if I could come out for the holiday weekend to inaugurate it with him. I told him I couldn't due to my work schedule and that I may get called in for OT. Well he came out to Saskatoon to visit me instead, leaving that kick ass new screen for another time :amen:

"I ordered" one of these today, a custom leather case for the iPod in Black Leather. It has a post mounted swivel beltclip like a cell phone and the one I'm getting has a bottom clasp rather than the magnet closure (I don't like the idea of magnets and a hardrive) These are super nice cases... The make awesome PDA and Cell phone cases as well.

Guess what I got to drive today!!! 8O
Yup, a 911 Carrera Cabriolet! I think it's a couple years old, but who cares! It belongs to a cousin on my wife's side. I sat in it last time I was over at his place but it wasn't insured. Well today we're over again, just meeting to goto his brother-inlaws. Well turns out we're still waiting for a friend so he says, hey you want to take out the Porche? Do I really have to answer that questions? ;)
First thing's first, it starts out nice, and we drop the top. The next thing is the brake pedal is freaking heavy. It's like a solid connection from the pedal to the calipers. Amazing. Clutch is a bit heavy too. The view from the cockpit is unbelievable. The tach is front and centre, with the speedo as an attachment just off to the left, in increments of 50 kph no less. There's a digital readout just at the bottom of the tach, which I didn't notice until the last part of my spin.
This machine has just gobs of power, very smooth. When you get it over a certain rpm, it really sings. It was pretty busy on the roads today, so I didn't get to do too much. I took it for a brief spin on the freeway, had some space so I merged quickly, in 3rd gear. :driving: I think I hit about 150 kph before I had to slow down. Then moved it gradually into 6th.
On a final hill back home, I really got the car moving up that nice long hill in 3rd. Ahhh, the end of the ride came all too fast. But there's now the opportunity to take it out for a longer drive in the future when there's not so many cars on the road. I can't wait.
Oh, we also moved my cousin's Krell amp to his brother inlaws, as well as his Sonic Frontiers tube pre-amp, and power supply. Damn that Krell was heavy, took 4 of us to move the sucker.

I found this PDA (pad-based data accessory) at a great price! Never needs a battery charge and has some very economical storage options avaialble, although the random search capabilities are limited due to its use of a proprietary operating system that is not Window compatable (manual page flipping). Its smart looks are enhanced by a choice of colors. This might be the answer for those who don't feel they can swing the cash right now for the high priced models. :>)

Hey Eduardo -- glad you could stop by -- Happy Easter !
Mats -- Pacman is an oldie but goodie! Some grad school classmates built a Pacman game machine and reportedly persuaded Hugh Hefner to put up some cash to produce it. But they overlooked an important little clause that his lawyers snuck into the contract -- his Playboy Clubs had exclusive rights to the product for the first two years and so they only could sell as many as he wanted to put in the clubs during that time. And that wasn't enough to get rich off of it by any means -- by the time the exclusive deal was over, a lot of game machine competitors were out there and their product was essentially worthless. (They say don't look a gift horse in the mouth, but be careful of any deals he may ask you to sign.) :>)

Additional evidence that DVD has hit the mainstream, when a stodgy old-time comic like this talks about DVD so matter-of-factly... the only thing they didn't get right is that if it is a movie that was in the theater within the past year, the DVD is probably already out. (Given the comic, though, maybe they went to a dollar cinema to see a "catalog title" that won't be out on DVD until Lucas freezes over.) :>)

Wait long enough and the P50s will be out. :>)
Actually, for at least 20 years, both the dilemna and opportunity for computer buyers has been "do I buy now or do I wait" due to the continual drop in prices, while the performance capabilities of the machines at any given price point continue to increase fairly dramatically.
If a machine at a price you can afford to pay today does what you need it to today, and waiting will cause a drop/lack of needed gain in productivity or quality of life (including insurmountable Pentium envy), :>) then the time to buy is now.

Yes, yes, I know all about the perpetual waiting game.
On the other hand, it would just be stupid not to wait the day or so and see what happens. This isn't an pending price drop - it has already happened as Intel has released their latest processors. So, the smart man will wait a day and see what happens to the lappie price.
Knowing Dell though, all it will mean is an increase for their profits.

Howdy howdy howdy! :later:
I finally get to post today! I had the day off from work, as I always take the day after Easter off as a recuperation day. It's a good thing too since the certified geek was hopping all day long! I finished caulking the window frame I repaired over the weekend, now all that's left to do is prime and paint it.
Then I went to visit the two people I did computer work for recently since they were having some issues. The first one just needed some house cleaning, a run of AdAware and removing stuff from the Windows startup since her resources were getting low. While I was there I also re-hooked up her DVD player since she now has HDTV through her cable company so that took over her only set of component inputs on her plasma, so I hooked up the DVD via S-video. I'd love to get the HDTV service but that's yet another thing that will have to wait until I have a real job. Then I went to her sister's, where I did computer work a couple weeks ago, since her Compaq stopped working. She told me it wouldn't display anything on the monitor and she smelled burning plastic 8O so it didn't sound like something Ad-Aware would fix . I popped the cover off and found that the heatsink/fan assembly fell off the Athlon CPU. I was going to try and reattach it and see if the PC was salvageable, but I found the plastic hook on the CPU socket that the HSF clipped on to snapped off, which is why the HSF fell off. Also, I saw some burnt components on the MB next to the CPU, so things got pretty hot in the immediate vicinity of the CPU. I told her that she'll need a new computer, and she'll pick one up this week, and we scheduled to get together on Thursday so I can set up the new PC and to see what I can copy off the hard drive of the old one.
I discovered that the DVD-ROM drive in my PC isn't working properly. It reads CDs fine but it just sits and blinks at me when I put in a DVD. I tried it with several discs, including ones that worked in the past in it, so it looks like the drive is bad. It's only $50 to get another one but until my job situation improves I can't buy PC parts. Maybe I'll see if I can buy the shell of my customer's dead Compaq and pull the DVD drive out of it.
I got a new propane cylinder for the grill so we're going to have our first hamburgers grilled outside this year, yum yum! It's been a gorgeous day today, I'm writing this from my laptop at the picnic table.
So those were my adventures for today. Unfortunately it's back to the dead end hell hole job tomorrow.

Hey Ladies!!
I played the waiting game before and sometimes it can be benificial, especially if there are new technologies coming available.
However at this time, it's the faster processor's that one would be waiting for. The speed gains are not that much though for the price you have to pay.
Jeff,,if they lower the price , then likely they will jack up the ram or HD or DVD drive,,you know what I mean.. :?
Best of LUCK!!

Trevor -- that's "it" for the TV? You aren't watching hockey playoffs, you're watching ants at an ice picnic. :>) I'm shocked... shocked to learn that you don't have a big ass widescreen TV out there, preferably even a front projector. But at least you have a couple of comfortable seating options. If my garage were that clean, empty, and well decorated, I'd probably live out there too. :>) You've fixed up yours very nicely. (Any particular team you're rooting for in the playoffs?) :>)
Burke
PS -- I've recently been watching just about everything on a 14" TV, pending needed repairs and a new bulb for my front projector.

We all hate pop-up ads, but here's another way of looking at it, I guess...
http://cst.rbma.com/content/Fast_Track?date=20030421
Fast Track -- April 21, 2003
... I absolutely hate pop-ups -- especially when they "take over" and you can't scroll around the page you just opened or even use the mouse for other things (like switch to a different window) in some cases until the damned pop-up has finished loading. That is really obnoxious, and Ad Aware doesn''t do a damned thing about it. Using Opera as the browser seems to be the only really effective and reliable means of squelching crapola like that.

Trev: Nice ride, been a while since I've seen some pics.

Those 350Z's are kinda cool cars...
Trev, bite your tongue.. The M3 is a Inline 6, which any Mechanical Engineer will tell you is the most perfect design for a motor (the Inline 6 that is). :D
I would do the Coupe, The drop top just isn't for me in this type of car design.

Bing, I think I'll bail on the convertible next time around, get back to a hardtop. I really like a sunroof better now, I think. Oh sure, once in a while the convertible is nice though.
But I really bought the convertible last time, just because the deal was right, and the milage was right on the car. I mean a 2 year old car with 8700 miles?!? That's right, in 99 when I bought my car, that was the miles.

My HT Site (http://www.patzcatz.com/ht.html)
Well, the spiders come out and get things sometimes. For one thing, your web page needs meta tags, you familiar with those?
Actually, regular submissions to the search engines every 30 days is the best way to insure initial placement. I've got a tool to get you started, but it does take a few months to really start showing up. I'll admit, I haven't been real regular at taking the time to run it.
But it's a complex procedure, and different search engines use different formulas to base position. Things like multiple references to keywords, no not found 404's, number of hits to page, number of searches for page...etc.
www.submission-spider.com is what I use. He tries to submit to many sites, but some are setup differently, and you have to hand do those. But he points you to the page to get going with it. Then there's the open directory or something like that, your supposed to pay to get into? You don't have to, as he will pick you up from Yahoo or such anyway, even though they say you won't get in unless you pay.

Kevin:
Getting listed on Yahoo! isn't easy. It's one of the few (if only) search engines where all applications are reviewed by an actual person. When you submit, you must make sure you've chosen the best category for your site. Don't hammer them with requests, or they might blacklist you. Give them a few weeks, then try contacting and if that gets no where, in another couple of weeks try again.
Here is an amazing site for web promotion:
http://www.virtualpromote.com/
Awhile ago I used this site to promote a website I was doing and the success was incredible - we went from 400 hits on the home page to over 250,000 in one month - all because of manual submission to the sites. That site also has great info on how to tweak your pages for keywords etc.

You know I'm listening to the radio today to a news report on SARS and I can't believe the fear mongering:
Scientist report today that SARS can live for one day outside the host and that means you can get it from touching anything!
What is the point of this report? You can't do anything about that. Well you could go live in a bubble. Why don't they just say that common sense is recommended. Your mother was right...don't pick your nose and always wash your hands before eating and after going to the bathroom.
Irresponsible :x
My brother is a nurse at one of our larger hospitals and told me that although they get daily SARS reports they're not too concerned because where they work...if you thought about it too much you couldn't function. I agreed...however I'm surprised that gloves and masks are NOT standard. It's the norm at the dentist...I don't think twice about it, seems like a good idea. Gloves and masks don't impede the quality of care. Hospitals should really incorporate this into the daily routine. They cut back on the strength of the cleaning solutions to save money...hospitals aren't as sterile as they should be and there's no reason why nurses and staff shouldn't be wearing protection (no, not that kind) for the full shift. I try to avoid doctors and hospitals because the waiting rooms are full of sick people. My wifes grandmother is 91...smokes, drinks, swears like a sailor and doesn't exercise...does it ALL wrong and is going to outlive us all. Not the poster child for clean living but maybe she's on to something ;)

Spammers are getting ever more resourceful in the efforts of others to cut down on SPAM...
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/business/1877197
These days, I get almost as much SPAM in my regular inbox as in the Junk Mail folder -- and some stuff I really need to see gets shunted over to Junk Mail by the SPAM "filter", so I still have to at least scan the titles of ALL the email I receive and in some cases, look at the contents to determine if it is legit or not. But as teh articel points out, they are getting creative with the subject lines, so it isn;t alwasy possible to tell withiut opening it up.
It is really aggrevating to open a message that looks right from its subject, only to have it instead, be another solicitation for Viagra, porno, help dodging taxes, debt cancellation, porno, free vacations, porno, Iraqi most wanted playing cards, ink jet cartridge refills, low cost cigarettes, porno, online dating sites, weight loss while taking a shower, porno, wierd cooking utensils, degrees from prestigious non-accredited universities, and did I mention, porno? Almost enough to make you want go back to the US Postal Service (but come to think of it, most of what I get via them is "bulk mail" too.)

time for me to get back to.... DOING NOTHING !Does that mean the hockey playoffs are over and you are out of DVDs to watch? :>)
Gordon -- The issue of hospital cleanliness really hit close to home a couple of years ago, when a co-worker went in for a routine operation and caught an infection in the hospital, the side effects of which put him into a coma from which he never recovered. He died after six weeks of intensive care. As sad as that was, the scary part for me was that he was in the same hospital where I had spent several days recovering from a life- threatening situation a couple of years before that. It seems like simple precautions like washing hands before and after handling stuff and using disposable gloves should be standard procedure.

I agree gordon its sad the state of heath care...they all assume that there's an antibiotic that will fix the bugs so why bother with the sterility.
Say gordon or kevin what's the best way to open a program from a web page? I need to get some data from somewhere and save it to a text file which I now can do with VBS but I then need to call a stat's program to run a batch job on the data. Its going to spit back another text document that'll read and post the results...so how do I go about calling the stats program without getting all the security warnings?

It will have room for three people and will re-enter the atmosphere with a much less radical flight trajectory than the ill-fated NASA space shuttles.

The site is an internal site, right? Just add it to the Trusted Sites zone in IE.
The security warnings are there for good reason, so people don't put up malicious web sites that launch programs that reformat your hard drive or something, but if you put your site into the trusted sites zone in IE then you shouldn't get the security warnings.

Andrew Pratt

nope the BIOS issue I've dealt with...this is a new problem. Basically I need to learn how to open a program from a webpage.

Glad someone's seen the 5th E! ;) Yeah there's probably a couple of us here who have seen it, or even own a copy! ;) After all, what else do you put on after a TV tune-up session? I think I've watched the entire movie like 3 times but I've seen Leeloo jump off the ledge about a thousand times! 8O
Hey, guess what! I can actually say something good happened at work today! 8O Let's see, how many years has it been since I've been able to say that? I actually got something remotely resembling a RAISE! 8O A whopping 5%, whoopee. :?? Hey it's still twice the size of the last "raise" I got. I still won't be trading the Saturn in any time soon, but maybe I'll have another $400-600 in the bank by the time I lose my job or quit in frustration (or find a better job perhaps!?). My PHB seemed to think there isn't much to worry about in terms of layoffs but then she could have been blowing sunshine up my a$$ or she doesn't know for sure either, so I'm not lifting my spending freeze quite yet.
Well it's not a big enough raise for a party or banana emoticon, and the current weather outside precludes any mention of the sun emoticon so I guess I'll just have to use the old fashioned kinda smile icon: :| Hey at least it's not a frown! ;)
Later... KJP

Hello!
Wow! What a last couple of days this has been. First we are upgrading our finance software from DOS (yes DOS) to Windows. They started on Friday at noon and we are still going at 6:35pm on Tuesday!
Yes, don't faint, I'm still at work this late!
Anyway, the State Banking Dept auditor came in on Monday and just left. We usually get no exceptions..... quite the contrary this time. Come to find out our LPD (Limited Physical Damage) insurance refunds have been calculating improperly and we owe hundreds of customers money totalling into the thousands. Fortunately for us it was a glitch in our finance vendors program and was corrected rather easily. We only get 25% commission so our insurance company will be reimbursing 75% to our customers.
Anyways, you can imagine having an auditor here while trying to change to the new software and having to put off customers for 2-3 days on loans, etc. A total nightmare! 8O 8O 8O It's close to over now though.
AND I'M OFF TOMORROW! NAH-NAH-NA-NAH-NAH!
I see you fellows haven't slowed down much.
Haven't had time to catch up on all the TTP pages but you've been there and done that as well.
Have a great afternoon/evening gents!
