Hi Everybody!! http://members.shaw.ca/TTP/aapepsi.gif http://members.shaw.ca/TTP/aaPepsiCap.jpg A new Chapter we start. I always wondered what TTP stood for ...
Now I know! It's the stuff they put in PEPSI Config Rule : % 'TTP'

I was always a coke guy, and Mountain Dew. :)

what was the last chapter flipped to 101 about? You could have closed it at 100 Mr. Trevor. Shame shame shame. :)

Upon further research of my disc drive program I am trying out, it did have a directory structure and the option to save different directories. That should help a lot. except I will still have to save all of Windows to get to my desktop, if it's there.

Morning folks, and it's my first post to TTP IX! Sorry, no sun emoticons though, I prefer to save those for Hap-E!

Ok, enough of the fake frivolity. :P Time to get down to business. TTP IX has been up for 47 minutes now and no flip yet! Just unacceptable.

As for Pepsi, I drink Diet only. Diet Coke comes in a close 2nd. As far as regular soder goes, I'll take Pepsi over Coke any day.

Lex, good to hear that your dater is still intact. Probably just a MFT or something got trashed (that's Master File Table in case you're wondering, a key component in a NTFS file system). Get the babes off the drive and then toss it, or reformat it and keep it as a spare if it doesn't have bad errors.

My cubicle neighbor has a funeral to go to today. She said she'd like to switch places with the deceased. I guess I'm not the only one who's borderline suicidal due to this job.

Later folks... KJP

Welcome to Chapter 9 Lex,,:-y

what was the last chapter flipped to 101 about? You could have closed it at 100 Mr. Trevor

Lex,,Check out the previous 8 Chapters and you will see that all of them went to 101 pages..It's a TTP tradition to roll the pages 100 times.
As for closing,,I don't have that ability to close threads. If I do , I sure don't know how to use it yet!!
This young apprentice may have to be taught on how to do that!!

I see we picked up another member overnight.

And so we sing.

72 members to go for the guide
72 members to go....

Sorry, but I've always been a Coke guy too. (Coke head?) I really can't stand the Pepsi my wife always buys. The Captain and Coke. That's where it is. 8x)

Trevor, you have to log in using the link at the top of the forum page, then go into TTP VIII and there will be a "lock" button at the bottom of the page. Since you're a moderator of "Not Ready For Primetime" you have the power of the ring here, as Lex once explained to me when I first received my Front Projection ring :)

Pepsi? Bleccchhhhh! :spit:

http://www.turbosquid.com/Previews/Content_on_12_14_2001_05_24_41%5Ccoke_diet_coke_solid.jpg69CFC220-B6AE-4E0E-9C555B4410597646.jpgLarge.jpg

Diet Coke for me. Then, a good old-fashioned Prince's root beer! Yeah, that's the ticket.

Hi guys. We're on TTP # 9, wow.

Why don't we set an Overrun Rule? Something like "more than two posts on the new page in an overrun and you buy pizza for all the regular members" - whether or not it's an overrun post or not to be decided by a jury of your peers. Of course, with pizza on the line, it will by default, be an overrun post! :D

Chris, I tried to E-mail you, but no luck on an address. Can you ICQ me? It's in my profile.

Burke and I have a date this Saturday! NO, not THAT kind of date - perverts. I'm going turntable shopping and his ears (and musical taste) are better than mine.

That's about all that's going on this morning.

Eduardo, how's the ankle?

Trevor, glad the 'Vette is nice 'n comfy. Pepsi? Blecccchhhhh. :puker:

Lex, got all your porn - I mean, data back yet? What a pain.

Kevin, she's suicidal too? That's the newest (mis)management-by-attrition policy. :sos:

Hey Pat dug out enough to get to a computer! How's the snow up there?

Guess I'd better do some work for a change. Later y'all.

It's a good thing I have Stealth(tm) technology or I wouldn't be able to surf TTP safely from my cube at all... :hump:

Well, I think I'm over my fancy cell phone lust. Those PCS Vision phones are cool but I can't afford one, and I need it like a hole in the head anyway. If I need a phone for arranging interviews I'll get a cheap prepaid one and then toss it/give it away when I don't need it anymore.

Maybe the link doesn't work with trillian, it works with the AIM software though. My AIM is kpatz03103 but I'm sure I won't have anything more insightful to say on there than I do on here.

I think we need a "not only am I not motivated but I have no will to live" smiley. I wonder what it would look like...

The good news: I had a new pair of Sonus fabers on order. I was gonna just slap a pic up on the site when I got them, the Cremona.

The bad news:
But now, with my business slowdown due to economy, competition, whatever?, and all the personal expenses since last week, it would just be putting myself out there to much to go for them. So, I just had to cancel the order.

Lex, that's too bad about the Sonus Fabers. Maybe tjhings will pick up soon and you can go ahead with the purchase.

As to that picture Trevor posted... never mind Lex, what about this old guy's heart ?

Eduardo, sorry about the sprain, but isn't that an excuse to kick back and watch some dvds ?

If I strike out this time I'll really be discouraged. That's because the link only works with the "Real" AIM client and not with Ttrillian or my favvo, Miranda... so I have to keep AIM if I wan't to use that feature... sniff :( A real programmer could fix that right, me thinks. Actually, if the Miranda/Trillian clients can accept command line arguments or be launched through a shell extension it's a trivial matter to add a registry entry so that a AIM: URL in IE launches the messenger.

I guess TTP IX will have two three pools going:

1) who gets the most flips
2) Whether Kevin still has a job, or gets a new one, by the time TTP X starts.
3) Whether Kevin is able to maintain enough life force energy to keep his heart beating until TTP X.

What's even more depressing is I started my job hunt during TTP II. That's right, TTP Chapter TWO. And we're up to chapter nine now. Pathetic.

I think it's based on your post count. At 200 posts, you become a senior member, at 3000 you become a moderator whether you like it or not. :) Somewhere around 6000-7000 posts you become an administrator, or so it seems :)

I wonder what happens when someone reaches 10,000 posts. Either you become God, or the database crashes. :nuke: Either way I'm afraid. 8O

The Saskatchewan farmer

A big city lawyer went duck hunting in rural Saskatchewan.
He shot and dropped a bird, but it fell into a farmer's field on the
other side of a fence.
As the lawyer climbed over the fence, an elderly farmer drove up on his tractor and asked him what he was doing.
The litigator responded,"I shot a duck and it fell in this field, and
now I'm going to retrieve it."
The old farmer replied, "This is my property, and you are not coming over here."
The indignant lawyer said, "I am one of the best trial attorneys in
Canada and if you don't let me get that duck, I'll sue you and take
everything you own".
The old farmer smiled and said, "Apparently, you don't know how we settle disputes in Saskatchewan.
We settle small disagreements like this with the Saskatchewan
Three Kick Rule."
The lawyer asked, "What is the Saskatchewan Three Kick Rule?"
The Farmer replied, "Well, because the dispute occurs on my land, first I kick you three times and then you kick me three times and so on back and forth until someone gives up."
The attorney quickly thought about the proposed contest and decided that he could easily take the old codger.
He agreed to abide by the local custom.
The old farmer slowly climbed down from the tractor and walked up to the attorney.
His first kick planted the toe of his heavy steel toed work boot into
the lawyer's groin and dropped him to his knees.
His second kick to the midriff sent the lawyer's last meal gushing from his mouth.
The barrister was on all fours when the farmer's third kick to his rear end sent him face-first into a fresh cow pie.
The lawyer summoned every bit of his will and managed to get to his feet Wiping his face with the arm of his jacket, he said, "Okay, you old coot. Now it's my turn."
[I love this part....]
The old farmer smiled and said, "Naw, I give up. You can have the duck.

If you like, take 2-4 test shots so I have something to go on. After I develop the home page, I'll put it up where you can look at it and then we'll work out the details (sizes of pictures, fonts, etc.). The final pics can come later.

Tribbles were "harmless" creatures introduced onto a Federation space station by an itenerant asteroid miner. They were lovable faceless creatures that slowly crawled everywhere. The more food they got, the more they reproduced and since they were born pregnant, boy could they reproduce. They had an aversion to Klingons, too.

Yeah, Burke, your comment with the flip score after 1 flip was very funny. :) I see Chris coming on strong!

Been a frustrating evening trying data recovery folks. I've little to say except I am beat up from it, and have little to show for it using the crap product I bought. :(

I've already emailed them and told them I expect a full refund, or I will be disputing it, and filing reports with the Nevada BBB, FTC, and filing a complaint with downloads.com. Real crap, get maybe 1 of 50 images successfully, and no exe's, xls, mbx, toc at all.

Can't we talk about something other than the flips around here? Oh, that reminds me... :>)

Three flips already wowzers!
Not to put too fine a point on it, technically there have only been TWO flips, since we are currently on page three. As Lex so authoritatively decreed in TTP VIII, (when it looked like Trevor had a shot at the flip title), :>) the first page doesn't count as a flip. But it is still "wowzers" that we've already pushed through that many pages already!

Everyone doing okay?

Lex sorry to hear about the data recovery mess you've wound up in. I'm assuming from your last post the problems now are with the data recovery software? Go get 'em tiger.

Got the following nasty one in the mail today :)
TRAGEDY

President George W. Bush is visiting an elementary school today, and in one of the classes, they are in the middle of a discussion related to words and their meanings.

The teacher asks the President if he would like to lead the class in a discussion of the word, "tragedy." So our illustrious leader asks the class for an example of a "tragedy."

One little boy stands up and offers, "If my best friend, who lives next door, is playing in the street and a car comes along and runs him over, that would be a tragedy." No," says Bush, "that would be an ACCIDENT."

A little girl raises her hand: "If a school bus carrying 50 children drove off a cliff, killing everyone involved, that would be a tragedy." I'm afraid not," explains Mr. President. "That's what we would call a GREAT LOSS."

The room goes silent. No other children volunteer. Pesident Bush searches the room. Isn't there someone here who can give me an example of a tragedy?"

Finally, way in the back of the room, a small boy raises his hand. In a quiet voice he says, "If Air Force One, carrying Mr. & Mrs. Bush, were struck by a missile and blown up to smithereens,by a terrorist like Osama bin Laden, that would be a tragedy.

" Fantastic," exclaims Bush, "that's right. And can you tell me WHY that would be a TRAGEDY?" Well," says the boy, "because it wouldn't be an accident, and it certainly wouldn't be a great loss."

Good one Mats, I sent it to some of my co-workers.

All I can say about GWB is, like father, like son. Both of them have/are picking fights with Iraq, and neither of them did our freakin' economy a bit of good. Yes, when "Daddy Bush" was in office I was stuck in a hell hole job with no hope of escape either.

Ok, that's enough political BS for one day. How's everyone doing? I guess I slept better last night because I at least have some will to survive today. Not a lot, but at least I'm not at risk of dying at my desk. xx)

Oh well, I suppose I should make a half hearted attempt to be productive today, since I'm sure the PHBs will be bugging me every 5 minutes.

Good morning!

It's pouring down rain here right now, which is a tragedy because it's not an accident and there's no great loss!

Keep in mind Kevin, we can deal with it now while we have someone who is willing or deal with it later by crawling under a rock. Either way, at some point in time, we will have to deal with it. Personally I'd rather it be now. And it's pretty obvious most Americans are behind our President. I'm done! I'm shuttin' up! :D

Geeze, I can't believe you guys have blazed through 2 pages of TTP IX already.

I started on enclosing part of our screened porch but now must wait for the rain to stop. It's blowing in on the porch pretty hard. Ahh, looks like it's slowing down some now. Better get back to work.

Have a great day fella's!

It's pouring down rain here right now, which is a tragedy because it's not an accident and there's no great loss!So if I lose my job that would be a tragedy too, right? After all, it wouldn't be an accident, nor would it be a great loss!

Of course it's supposed to snow today. Ick. At least they're only talking an inch or two, but heck, that's what they said last time at first, then it became 4-6 inches, then 6-8, then a foot, and we got 18 inches.

Well George has to do what he's gotta do, but I wish he'd get his butt in gear on getting the economy going. I'm not looking forward to living under a bridge in another year if I lose my job and can't find another. I'd rather be buying cool toys. :) Speaking of toys, how's it going with the RPTV dilemma?

:sn :sn :sn Good Morning! :sn :sn :sn

Economic talk so early huh? :D Just and FYI...we are experiencing the economic and political decisions of the previous administration right now...most "actions" by our president or congress take at least 4-8 years to fully materialized...so even if our President "fixed the economy" like so many are hoping for, it's never and instant fix, but rather takes time to materialize. Except for tax cuts which show up sooner, other changes take time. Besides getting out of the wallets of Americans and making business easier to conduct, what else could our President or congress do to "make the economy better?" I guess that's what comes along with the title of leader/president/etc...blame for when things are going wrong and congrats when things are going good...whether or not they had anything to do with it!

As for the situation in Iraq, let me share the following:

I am basically a conservative hawk with modest military service years ago
under my belt. But this question, "Why attack Iraq now?", has been
bothering me recently. It seems to go against the grain for us to be in a
"first strike" role against a tin-horn dictator like Saddam Hussein.

For possible clarification, I posed this question to a friend of mine from
church who is a retired USN Admiral and currently a well connected Defense
Industry executive. I've also known him for 15 years and know him to be a
smart, level-headed person, and church leader. Here are his thoughts, but
in my words.

Al Qaeda, Hamas and associated terrorists of the world are out to get the US
in a big way. They proved with the Sept 11 attack that they are capable of
a major strike. This just whetted their appetite for an escalation to the
next level. There is a strong likelihood that the next level will not be a
similar attack that takes out 2,800 people, but leaves no long-lasting
damage. They will take their time, and likely go for a strike that will try
to take out a major US city. It could be a dirty bomb, with combination
radiation and/or biological agents, exploded near a major city, such as from
a container ship in the Hudson River, or San Francisco or Baltimore harbors.
It would not even have to be unloaded, and we don't have the technology to
detect it in advance. And they are likely to have several such strikes in
the works, in case one or two are discovered. We are talking about a "first
strike" by them that will, for all practical purposes, seem like a last
strike to us.
It will do so much damage to our economy, and several hundred thousand
people, that the war is over as far as the terrorists are concerned, and
they won. We will only be left to wonder who did it and who to bomb in
retaliation.

So the notion that we are not a "first strike" country becomes a death
sentence for us, if we allow this to happen first, before we take action.

The terrorists will have a very difficult time pulling this off without the
help of a small industrial complex. The current providers of such a complex
to the terrorists are Syria, Iran, North Korea and Iraq. From among these,
Iraq and North Korea have the least stable leadership, and Iraq is the one
with the most proven attempts to develop weapons of the type that terrorists
would like to have.

It is reasonable to think that our national leaders believe that we must
prove to all these countries that we are not going to sit by waiting on
Armageddon. We need to stop the terrorist supporters now, and we need to
show the other terrorist supporters what is in store for them if we feel we
need to hit them to protect our national interests.
Terrorists have no allegiance to a particular country, so they don't fear
retaliation by the US. The old cold-war standoff is no longer operative.
The terrorists probably consider a nuclear retaliation against one or more
of these supporting countries just the cost of war. They, and their
supporting countries, also know that the US will not just heave a few nukes
onto a Baghdad in retaliation, killing a couple of million innocent
civilians.

The terrorists are also not members of the UN. Our discussions there are
just a comedy to the terrorists.

So the US must act now in every way possible to stop the possibility of such
an attack against the US. Part of that action is to deny the terrorists the
support of these rogue countries. If a rogue country's leadership is so
unstable that they might sell/give the terrorists the weapons, then we must
stop it now. Iraq is such a country. A measured, non-nuclear attack on
Iraq may cause the others to cease their support of the terrorists in such a
dangerous way. It also may cause the least civilian casualties of all the
alternatives.

We must make it clear to the terror-supporting countries that there will be
a price to pay, and that a nuclear retaliation, which we are unlikely to
use, is not the only option open to us.

I think President Bush understands he cannot let a first strike happen, and
that nuclear retaliation is no longer a threat.
We must go after the terrorists, and their supporters and suppliers, now. A
history lesson~~ Do you know why the US was in such a rush to develop the
atomic bomb in WWII?It's not because we simply wanted such a weapon. It's
because concerned physicists, including German refugee, Albert Einstein,
warned Roosevelt in writing that the Germans had the most capable physicist
in the field of nuclear physics, Nobel Prize winner, Werner Heisenberg, and
he was known to have a laboratory working on such a device. We knew what
would happen if Hitler was the first to have such a weapon. Think about it.

I believe we are in a similar race today against the terrorists. The war
has begun, so the "don't go to war" crowd apparently has a misunderstanding
of what we are up against. We are at war today. Our country was similarly
divided just before Pearl Harbor and our entry into WWII. A modern day
"Pearl Harbor" is likely a surprise that is unacceptable to us.

End ranting...

Well, I didn't come here to get political so I'm ducking out now before things get too out of hand. :)

As for hits from the site, nothing yet (well, except for one TTPer ;) ). As for responses from the 1200-odd recruiters I sent my resume to, nothing yet. I'm beginning to think I wasted my money on this new resume and blitzing campaign. I'm out $400 on it now and have gotten nothing to show for it.

I'd have better luck spending $400 on lottery tickets it seems. If the odds of getting an interview are worse than 1200 to 1 I'm in trouble. All I can do is hope I don't get laid off. :? I'm up a creek if I do.

Speaking of sites, what's the trick to getting listed on the search engines? I submitted my site to Google and Yahoo a month ago and they still don't come up on a search. I know I can pay them, but I'm already losing money on this job hunt as it is. Any suggestions Lex?

hello everyone - I can't believe I didn't do my H-Day tribute yesterday and it would have been appropiate. ;) Weather is dark and gloomy today. We had a bad thunder storm that woke me last night.

Hap-E - interesting perspective about the war.

Chris - Congrats on your flip. I like that episode.

REJECTION LINE
In case you meet anybody who you don't want to give your telephone
number to, but you do anyway because you feel bad - try this instead:
Rejection line: If you are a woman/man and are constantly approached
by unattractive (and/or undesirable) women/men asking for your phone
number,give them this number:

Atlanta: 770-908-7383
Boston: 617-658-7083
Charlotte: 704-559-4169
Chicago: 773-509-5096
Cleveland: 216-556-0051
Denver: 303-575-1696
Las Vegas: 702-387-2619
Los Angeles: 310-217-7638
Miami: 305-460-3285
New York City: 212-479-7990
San Francisco: 415-356-9833
Seattle: 206-781-3928

When the guy/woman calls that number, they get a friendly message
saying that they were rejected. Call the phone number. It's hilarious!

Oh cool! Y'all want political? Hehe, try this on for size:
Question:
You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, a dangerous looking man with a huge knife comes around the corner and is running at you while screaming obscenities. In your hand is a Glock .40 cal. and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do?

Liberal Answer (Democrat):
Well, that's not enough information to answer the question! Does the man look poor or oppressed? Have I ever done anything to him that is inspiring him to attack? Could we run away? What does my wife think? What about the kids? Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say about this situation? Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me? Does he definitely want to kill me or would he just be content to wound me? If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me? This is all so confusing! I need to debate this with some friends for a few days to try to come to a conclusion.

Conservative Answer (Republican):
BANG!

A Texan's Answer:
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! Click. (sounds of clip being ejected and fresh clip installed).

Wife: "Sweetheart, he looks like he's still moving, what do you kids think?"

Son: "Mom's right Dad, I saw it too..."

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! Click.

Daughter: "Nice grouping Daddy!"

Husband: "Darling, could you check your purse for a fresh clip? I seem to have left my other two in the truck with the shotguns."

And that brings us to the latest installment of "Tales from the Twilight Zone (a.k.a. work)" - episode #7,316:

On Tuesday, a roof leak developed about 6 feet away from my cube. The building maintenance people came in and "fixed" it. Today, it was leaking even more, so the maintenance guy rigged up a big sheet of plastic and a 30 gallon trash can outside my cube to "catch" the water and funnel it into the can. I wish I had my camera with me (hey, maybe I should buy that Sanyo Sprint PCS phone with the built-in camera!) so I could take and post a picture. One would think it would make more sense to repair the leak, instead of having this ugly jury-rigged trash can thing sitting outside my neighbor's cube. Sheesh.

Andrew is right, we do need to watch politics, it's a recipe for flame wars. Keep it joking to the extent possible.Hmmm... I just thought of something. If politics leads to flames, could we not use those flames to produce energy?

All we would need to do is get a bunch of people who each have their own opinion into a room connected to a boiler, steam turbine and generator, and voila! A source of perpetual energy! Hey, if I could make it work, I could win a Nobel prize, and reduce our dependency on foreign oil. How's that for ironic? :)

Hmm... we could even put a bunch of politicians in a room, and you wouldn't even need a boiler. The hot air by itself would spin the turbine and produce power. That and my idea for a toddler-powered power plant (a room full of 2 year olds could produce enough energy to light a small city), and our energy woes are gone forever!

Hopefully you'll find a good tool to recover your por...er, dater. :)

For those that remembered I tried to order a Denon 1600 from eCost a couple of weeks ago but it got canceled when they weren't going to be getting anymore in...well I happened to notice elsewhere that apparently they did have some in stock now so I just got off the phone with them about it and apparently the system automatically canceled it when the system saw there wasn't any coming in...anyway the long and the short of it is that I resubmitted my order and it should be here some time next week:)

Here's a couple more cool toys from the CES 2002 site:

http://www.enjoythemusic.com/ces2002/glackin/gamut.jpgHere's the Gamut S300 stereo amplifier. This 401 lb brute sports twenty Rifa 20,000 µF capacitors, and four 10-inch diameter 2500 W toroidal transformers. This thing can double as a step stool or as an extra seat for a visitor.... But the thing that really got my attention is that this beast has only a single (MOSFET) output device per side....www.gamutaudio.com (http://www.gamutaudio.com)

http://www.enjoythemusic.com/ces2002/glackin/laluce.jpgThe Most Stunning Turntable was exhibited by George Cardas of Cardas Audio. The SpJ La Luce turntable is a true work of art... www.cardas.com (http://www.cardas.com)

http://www.enjoythemusic.com/ces2002/glackin/clearaudiomax.jpgThe Most Stunning Turntable (Runner Up) was the clearaudio Maximum Solution. It can accommodate up to three tonearms, and has a power generator that resynchronizes the power to the three motors.www.musicalsurroundings.com (http://www.musicalsurroundings.com)

Now that's wild. Why would you want to have three tonearms on one turntable? So you can listen to three tracks at once?

http://www.enjoythemusic.com/ces2002/glackin/josephwahasl.jpgThe Best Headphone Amp in the show was from Antique Sound Lab. I had an informative discussion with Joseph Lau Tze Wah, the designer of Antique Sound Lab’s equipment. The new Twin Head headphone amp, which uses 2A3 tubes, has two outputs: with a transformer in the signal path, or OTL. The pre-production prototype that I heard sounded quite impressive, and it will drive the low-impedance Grados as well as my fave Sennheisers. www.divertech.com (http://www.divertech.com/)And in case you didn't know, I use an Antique Sound Lab headphone amp in my Cubicle Tubicle system. That guy in the picture designed all these headphone amps, including the one I listen to at work! :T

So the radio in our neon died big time....originally the tuner was stuck on an fm country station and the clock was advancing an hour every 10 minutes, now the tuner died completely...No radio and we have maybe 10 tapes anymore so the cassette wasn't too practical because 10 tapes gets old pretty quick and I'm not going back to tape...you couldn't change stations because the dial was toast...ha the joys of digital tuning....20 years ago this wouldn't be an issue course you'd have to literally "dial-in" your station. So I go to FutureShop because they have a sale on (when don't they have a sale?)

JVC CD player detachable face 159.99 regular 179.99 okay so 20.00 goes towards the installation (44.95...fairly standard fee).

So I inquire how much a tuner and cassette is...139.99?????....alright may as well get CD.
So I tell my wife Kathy that I looked around and that was the cheapest except for Canadian tire has a Koss CD player for 149.99 so I figured what hell stick with JVC.

Kathy couldn't accept that this was about as cheap as it gets so she started calling around...granted JVC isn't Sony, Alpine or Pioneer but neither was the price, Advance Electronics,Brian Reimer Audio, Pyramid Audio, A&B all alittle higher...so far so good.

Here's the holy shit part:
==================
She calls Eastern Dodge to see what el' crappo factory replacement costs.
With a cassette $479 !
With a CD $779 (BONG....you got to be f*cking kidding me!) For a P.O.S. factory stereo?.....HA-HA! too funny!
Oh yeah installation was extra of course.
Needless to say the JVC is going in today.

Yeah the prices on factory stereos are outrageous, but $800 for a CD player for a Neon!? Dang, that would double the value of the car! 8O

JVC makes decent stuff. Probably comparable to the Sony and Pioneer ilk, would blow Koss away but not quite Alpine. :)

When I got my Saturn it came with a "premium" cassette stereo, and I inquired about adding on the factory 6-disc CD changer (this was back in 1997). It was $600, plus another $150 for installation! 8O Holy sh*t! In 2000 I went to Tweeter and replaced the headunit with a Sony MDX-C5970 (AM/FM/MiniDisc), and a trunk mounted 10 disc CD changer (Sony CDX-737), for about the same amount of money as the factory CD changer alone.

Aftermarket is always cheaper, and always better, especially for the money. You should consider replacing the speakers, a lot of times, especially with the so-called "premium" factory systems, they have built-in equalization to make the factory speakers sound better, and when you drop in an aftermarket headunit the speakers end up sounding like crap. Speaking of which, I need to replace the crappy Saturn speakers, heck even Bose would be an improvement! 8O

I always wondered how the pilot starts the jet engines. Is there a sequence of events, or does he just push a button, or turn a key? Or does he open the fuel valve and have someone toss a match in?

Kevin- Well, to start the engines, we stick our feet out the bottom of the plane, and run real fast on a little treadmill like the Flintstones. This gets us nice and sweaty in our pilot uniforms, which in turn turns on the flight attendants, whose body temperatures rise in hormonal reactions. The body temperature rise heats the cabin air which is funneled through special ports designed by Boeing for $3.4 Million each, which spins the engines really fast. The hotter we get the attendants, the faster we go.
;)

No, seriously, aircraft are slightly different in design, but have similar principles. Most propeller and smaller jet aircraft use batteries and electric starter motors (kind of like a car) to spin up the engines until you can get enough air to get proper fuel combustion to provide power. After that, it's self sustaining. Large aircraft use pneumatic starters which require air pressure, and are much more powerful. So to start the engine you require either a large ground power cart which can flow air kind of like an air compressor, or an onboard miniature jet engine which generates electricity and air pressure, called an Auxilary Power Unit. Most large aircraft have some sort of APU. Once you have one engine started, its hydraulic, electric, and bleed air pressure is enough to start the others.

Some aircraft do have one button which does the whole engine start process, and you just watch the instruments to make sure nothing goes wrong. Others require a few steps, such as opening valves at certain points in the start sequence, introducing fuel, and starting ignition.

More than you ever wanted to know? :?? Did you know that my airplane, the new C-17, actually uses Windows in part for our onboard computer?

David/Burke: We arbitrarily picked a time of 1300 Monday afternoon for the theater tour, but they have said anytime was fine. Mesquite is apparently an eastern suburb of Dallas, so not very far from what I understand. If you feel like it, the offer's out there.

More than you ever wanted to know? :?? Ahh, yes. I guess technology has advanced since the old days when you had to yank on the propeller and then duck out of the way and hope the plane didn't take off without you when it started. :)Did you know that my airplane, the new C-17, actually uses Windows in part for our onboard computer?Oh, that's reassuring. I hope that computer isn't for anything critical or it might give a new meaning to the term "system crash" 8O

Subject WEEDING OUT NEIGHBORHOOD!!!
As we all know, the Tailban considers it a sin for a man to see a naked woman who is not his wife. So, next Saturday at 2:00 PM Eastern time all American women are asked to walk out of their house completely naked to help weed out any neighborhood terrorists. Circling your block for one
hour is recommended for this anti-terrorist effort.

All men are to position themselves in lawn chairs in front of their house to prove they are not Taliban, demonstrate that they think it's okay to see nude women other than their wife and to show support for all American women. And since the Taliban also does not approve of alcohol, a cold six-pack at your side is further proof of your anti-Taliban sentiment.
The American Government appreciates your efforts to root out terrorists and applauds your participation in this anti-terrorist activity. God bless America !

RE: WEEDING OUT NEIGHBORHOOD!!!

I'm afraid the terrorists may have infiltrated some of our more northerly states more heavily than we first suspected. Using "cold weather" as a ruse, many of the people up north are stating objections to the planned drill on Saturday. Of course down here where it is warm virtually year round, the drill may go unnoticed since many of the women prance around half naked most of the time anyway. (Is this a great place to live or what?) :>)

Still doing data recovery tests. Oh God is it getting old. No DIY Recovery tool as yet has performed very well. I'm just about to the end of my rope on this, running one more test tonight. It did find some deleted files in the initial test, that were displayable. So, I am running the full disc test tonight, see what it does.

Furthermore, every American male should be proudly smoking Cuban cigars, wearing Swiss watches, Italian shoes, and chasing that fine American light beer (eh?) with the best Irish Whiskey.

Wait, that's not right. ;)

Pr@: Actually, yes, modern aircraft are very efficient at altitude, and it's pretty amazine why. Engines are actually turboFANS, instead of true jets. Only a portion of the air taken into the engine goes through the combustion chamber and is ignited with fuel to produce thrust, which is useful at low, dense altitudes. Higher up, the majority of the thrust comes simply from air that is compressed by the 1st stage fan and then bypassed AROUND the rest of the engine. It has no ignition, combustion, or other compression! Just compressed air from one fan (as opposed to maybe 16 compressor/turbine stages of the combustion section) that is pushed out the back to create thrust. It's pretty groovy! Believe it or not, the engines on my aircraft actually have an 8:1 bypass ratio, meaning 8 times as much air goes through the fan bypass than the internal combustion. I have no idea of actual numbers for miles per gallon of aviation fuel though.

The other restaraunt is mostly in Colorado, but scattered throughout the western US here and there. They've got a World Beer Tour of about 150 different beers from around the world. (stay away from the Japanese--yech) After you do 110 of them, you complete your tour and get prizes. I'm currently on my second tour.

Of course, the server locked up on me again (I've practically memorized the "Error Processing Request" page by now) when I was trying to see if anyone had posted #33 on the previous page -- Lex must have thrown the server I/O switch "off" again, for my IP anyway. :>) Time to call it a day... er, night, anyway. :>)

Pr@: Actually, yes, modern aircraft are very efficient at altitude, and it's pretty amazine why. Engines are actually turboFANS, instead of true jets.In a way, a turbofan is an encased propeller that provides the thrust rather than the jet exhaust itself. It's also useful for shredding birds and other small objects that get sucked in. :)

That reminds me of an article I read years ago (early 90s I think)about an experimental engine that was mounted on an airliner, a DC-9 I think, that actually had specially-designed propeller blades on the back of the engine. Supposedly a turbine driving a larger propeller is more efficient at generating thrust than a smaller internal fan. They had one engine with this feature, and the other engine was the standard engine, and testing showed that the propeller engine used less fuel and ran at lower RPMs to generate the same amount of thrust. The blades were designed for higher speeds than conventional propellers, so the plane could fly as fast as a regular jetliner. I wonder whatever became of it. Apparently it never caught on.

Happy Friday everyone! :sn :sn

Chris, IIRC, once it was at speed (Mach 2+) the Blackbird generated only 15-20% of it's thrust from the combustion chambers in it's engines. Wow.

No that's not too much info. More, more!

I'll have to pass on this Monday, too. :( Take lots of pictures if you can. Mesquite is contiguous to Dallas. You can't tell where one stops and the other starts - literally. Oh, BTW, there are s'posed to be several good HiFi/theater stores in Dallas these days.

I saw photos of this thing in Popular Science (I think) way back when. It looked interesting and as you say seemed to get good marks. Maybe the oil companies bought up the technology?

Slow morning on TTP, where is everyone? :wtf: All the techy aviation talk scare everyone away? What's funny is I was into airplanes as a kid, I wanted to be a pilot, I built models, flew toy gliders and rubber-band powered planes. I knew everything there was to know about them back then. I lost interest when I got into electronics, and then computers, as I got older, but I still find aviation fascinating. As a kid I would build planes out of paper, cardboard, or even those thin paper plates (thick paper), attach a string to them and then run down the hill pulling the string and the plane would fly behind me. I had many cool designs. It was fun.

One of my favorite Road Runner cartoons is "Just Plane Beep", one where Wile E. orders a biplane from Acme War Surplus and then has all kinds of misadventures trying to use it to catch the roadrunner. He'd crash it, then he'd take the instruction sheet and reassemble the plane. Then the instruction sheet blew away in the wind and he tried to rebuild the plane from memory and the result was pretty comical. I love Warner Brothers cartoons.

It's finally Friday. This week did go by pretty fast. Not fast enough for me, but it didn't crawl like most weeks.

No word on the new Toshiba yet.

Back on the polictical arena:

Great perspective on the terrorist E! I couldn't agree more!

I hate politics myself. Political beaurocracy! Or should it be political B.S. as Kevin stated. I believe 90% or more of the political arena is corrupt. But it's there and we have to live with it unless we want to move to another country.... and where would that be?

I enjoyed President Bush's speech last night, more so the question and answer period.

That was quite a treatise from Chris on how to start up a jet.Yeah, I guess I'll never be able to steal a jet because I wouldn't have a clue how to get the dang thing going. I guess I'd have to go for a Cessna, at least I'd have half a chance of getting it running without blowing myself up. :)

On the C-17, is it a 1-button start, or do you have to follow a series of steps? Or does the Windows computer control the startup sequence. Ok, air, check, fuel valve open, check, igni... damn, blue screen of death! KABOOM!!!! 8OHas anybody hired Kevin yet ?Look out the window. Do you see any airborne Sus scrofa* flying around? No? TGIF, all.

Kev- On the C-17 specifically, the starting sequence is that we'll use battery power to start up our APU (onboard miniature jet engine) to power our electronics. We'll attach two ground carts, one a power unit to augment the APU with electronics, and the other a ground air power source for bleed air. We'll use this one to cool/heat the jet until we start engines. Some of our hydraulic pumps are powered by the engine, and some are electrical, so we'll turn on the electrical ones to provide hydraulic power. (note: hydraulics are VERY important on large aircraft to move the flight controls and large components like our cargo ramp)

Once we're ready to start, we push a button corresponding to the starting engine to open a valve to port the bleed air to the starter motor. This starts to turn the engine. Once it's got enough inertia and airflow (18% N2--I won't even bother to explain what this means) we open the fuel cutoff valve which starts to inject fuel to the combustion chamber and starts firing the ignitors there. Shortly thereafter you get a light-off and the temperature (Exhaust Gas Temperature or EGT) starts to rise rapidly. The rising rate slows down as the engine spools up and the increased airflow blows out the combusted air faster. Once the engine is completely self sustaining, the starter automatically disengages and closes the starter valve. Then we just turn on the things driven by the engine, such as the electrical generator, bleed air source, hydraulic pumps, and fuel pumps. Repeat for other three engines using power from ground carts or already started engine. So our tasks are really:

1. Configure the jet for start
2. Push starter button
3. Open shutoff valve at 18% N2
4. Monitor gauges to make sure nothing goes wrong
5. Turn everything on when engine started.

Pretty easy. I usually don't bring up flying stuff with friends--when explaining things I often have to get into some detail, and some people find it very boring or it appears "showing off". For those who are interested, though, I always enjoy explaining how things work. I'm that same kind of person when talking with someone about something I don't know, one of my essential questions is "okay, can you explain the basic principles and theories to me of how it works?" It's the engineer in me.
:rx

3. Open shutoff valve at 18% N2
4. Monitor gauges to make sure nothing goes wrong
5. Turn everything on when engine started. You forgot the very first step: boot up the computer and wait for Windows to load. Repeat step until Windows boots up without crashing. If APU is needed to power computer, you may need to refuel by the time the computer finishes booting. In which case you shut everything down, open the cargo bay, toss computer out the cargo bay, close cargo bay, refuel, restart APU, then resume at your step 1.

The Hunter

The big game hunter walked in the bar and bragged to everyone about his hunting skills.
The man was undoubtedly a good shot and no one could dispute that. But then he said
that they could blindfold him and he would recognize any animal's skin from its feel, and
if he could locate the bullet hole he would even tell them what caliber the bullet was that
killed the animal. The hunter said that he was willing to prove it if they would put up the
drinks, and so the bet was on.

They blindfolded them carefully and took him to his first animal skin. After feeling it for a
few moments, he announced "Springbuck." Then he felt the bullet hole and declared,
"Shot with a .308 rifle."

He was right. They brought him another skin, one that someone had in their car trunk.
He took a bit longer this time and then said, "Kalahari Lion Shot with a .416 rifle."

He was right again. Through the night, he proved his skills again and again, every time
against a round of drinks. Finally he staggered home, drunk out of his mind, and went
to sleep. The next morning he got up and saw in the mirror that he had one hell of a shiner.

He said to his wife, "I know I was drunk last night, but not drunk enough to get in a fight
and not remember it. Where did I get this black eye?"

His wife angrily replied, "I gave it to you. You got into bed and put your hand down my
panties. Then you fiddled around a bit and loudly announced, 'Skunk, killed with an axe. '

Oh, yeah... the Windoze thing. We use windows on a built-in laptop type computer to load a worldwide database of navigational points and information, as well as flight plans that we can program, load information about our weights and cargo load, etc. Once everything's loaded to the onboard FLIGHT computer, we no longer need Windows. The onboard flight computer has a completely different operating interface and program.

Still, I think it's funny that Bill Gates has his fingers even in my airplane.

Lex, the Potenza's are good tires, nice sticky compound for a street tire and decent in the wet. Gonna do some 'storming in the Beemer?

Pr@, I'll just bet that Glenda is ready right now. I know that at about 8 months, Aaron & Katheryn's mom was.

Someone at the Texas Department of Transportation (the state agency that handles license plates) has an interesting sense of humor. I just received my annual renewal notice for a little over $60 and they included an insert that states "The Texas Department of Transportation makes available several special license plate designs for a small fee in addition to your regular registration fee." They range froma low of $20 for "US Olympic Committee" to $50 for "Ducks Unlimited". They do not state whether any of the "small fee" goes to the organizations named in the special designs.

Trev- I agree. The new bluetooth technology I see has having AWESOME potential. We're waiting to buy a cell phone for my wife's BMW until the Bluetooth model is released. That way she can leave it in her purse and carry it around, but when in the car, it will automatically interface with the hands-free driving system.

Lex- 8000 Posts. YOU DA MAN!

Kev- You sound a lot like me. (come to think of it, most of us techie people with the theater affliction sound like me--you notice that? We all love cars, computers, and gadgets too) All I've ever wanted to do was go to the Air Force Academy, become a pilot, and serve my country. I consider myself very fortunate to have accomplished all my life goals several years ago, and everything from here on out is just gravy. Loving life--thank God!
:D

Burke/David- Well, the AF changed my flying schedule, so I can't go to TX on Monday. We rescheduled for next week, tentatively next Saturday. I'll keep you posted.

Trev- About the Hard Rocks, there's several in Canada, mostly on the Eastern side closer to the US border like Niagra Falls, Toronto (two cafes), Kanata, Ottawa, and Montreal. There used to be one in Banff, but it closed. I don't know my Canadian geography. Whereabouts are you in that mighty land?

Morning folks, on this sunny Saturday! (no, I'm not E so I'm not using that emoticon!) :tomato:

Lex, 8000 posts! That's awesome! Next will be your 8000th cable order, let's hope! :amen:

Chris, I love anything techie, whether it be computers, cars, aircraft, whatever. The more techie the better. Let's just say I never knew that jet engines used pneumatic starters before.

Trev, upgraditus again!? Bluetooth cell phone! I still don't have a phone, and if I do get one, it'll probably be a bare bones stripola model, as cheap as I can get. Sheesh, I need a job so I can upgrade things again! I got an email from a recruiter for a 2-3 month contract in Framingham, I might write back but I don't know if I'll take it if offered, it would be a nasty drive. And then after it's finished, then what? I'd rather move to Florida than drive toward Boston every day.

Trevor, a long cold winter, tell me about it. I'm ready for spring BIG TIME. It's warm today but it's supposed to get cold again tomorrow. Enough already. It doesn't help that it seems like everyone we know has gone to Florida on vacation this winter, except for us. Life sucks sometimes... no wait, it sucks all the time!

Later folks...KJP

We're waiting to buy a cell phone for my wife's BMW until the Bluetooth model is released.

Chris,,They are already available.
The Nokia 6310i has Blue Tooth technology.
I called Airsource today and it's a go ahead to upgrade my plan.
With this, I qualify for a phone upgrade.
They already have it charging for me and I will be going to pick it up in a few moments.
Also,,I was going to say what andrew said,,Check out the TTP map. Actually we are located just east of Calgary. About a 6 hour drive form Toon-Town.. or a one hour plane ride..That's my next upgrade!,,A Plane! :-y

Kevin,,The phones aren't that expensive..You should be able to get one. They are so handy!!

Here is the Link to the Nokia 6310i

NOKIA 6310i (http://www.nokia.ca/english/products/6310i.asp)

BLUETOOTH
Bluetooth is short-range radio technology that provides a wireless connection between mobile devices within a range of up to 10 metres. The two (or more) devices do not need to be within the range of sight, so you could connect wirelessly from your compatible PC to a Nokia phone while your phone is in your jacket pocket. Bluetooth connectivity can be found in mobile phones, laptop PCs, wireless car kits and wireless headsets, but it could be used in other electronic devices, such as a camera or printer.

RED ALERT!!

My Computer died.
Shut down on it's own.
I can restart but it shuts down right away after
the blue screen comes up.
Then I started to get this message on a black screen during boot up.

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.

SYSTEM 32\Drivers\ntfs.sys

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows set-up using the original Set-up CD Rom.
Select R at the first screen to start repair."

I put my Windows XP CD in the drive,,but not sure how to load the file I need.
I am in windows safe mode right now.
What should I do next.

This is strange as I was not even on the computer when this happened. It just restarted on it's own.
The only things running would have been SETi@Home and Nortons.

I am typing this from another computer in the house.

Now I've seen some spam in my day, but this one wins the prize. Its formatting precludes me from quoting it here but I did put it up in my webspace for you to see for yourself:

This isn't Tasteless Spam, it's Taiwanese Spam!

Spam from Taiwan (http://kpatz.home.attbi.com/misc/taiwanesespam.htm)

Of course the entire page was formatted in what appears as gibberish since my browser doesn't have the appropriate character set, but even still I wouldn't be able to understand it. What's even better is the spam included an entry form of some sort, with 4 entry fields and 3 radio buttons to choose from, plus a submit button, all in Taiwanese. I disabled the submit button on the copy I put up so no one submits themselves on a Taiwanese email list. :)

If you click the hyperlink you see in the spam, it goes to the web site, where a Media Player video will play, showing a guy peddling whatever he is trying to sell, entirely in Taiwanese. I have no clue what it could be. ::?

Hmm, doesn't sound real good Trevor. NTFS is the file system of the hard drive. I would guess that file is the information about the drive that Windows uses. I'm not real sure how you would restore it. Sounds like a job for Kevin, who must have missed your last post.

How about Repairing it, does XP have a startup disc for that, or you just have to reload everything?

Sounds like someone else may need a second drive and Ghost software... so you can restore from that.

The disc, means an XP disc. But not a self extracting manufacturer's disc. A self extractor only knows how to do one thing, and that's reload everything.

If you put an XP disc in (microsoft version), and start your computer, it should boot from the CD, at that point, you'd select R for repair as it prompts you to do so.

thanks Pat. :)

Howdy gents!

Cool flip pic Trev..... those are beautiful trees with the snow on them.

Sonnie, Florida room? What did I miss? Oh, do hillbilly's have semi-auto pistols? I thought they used flintlocks.

Yeah David, we enclosed 18' of our screened porch with 4' tall windows on the 18' wall and 11' wall that we added. 3 walls are pretty much all windows now. Not sure why we call it a Florida room. lol More like a sun room to me.... may be the same thing.

I worked on it more today... doing trim work. Slow process but the nail guns make things much faster. I can't imagine having to drive all those nails with a hammer.

HA HA on your latter comment. BANG BANG to YOU! With my semi-auto pistol. hehee

Ok, then your CD Drive is not set to "boot first". You need to go into your CMOS (Press DEL, or F1 likely, when prompted to on startup WAY before you get to Windows.

When you get to your CMOS screen, you will likely tab across until you find something that says boot sequence, boot order. You will likely see HD whatever the brand of it is describing it first. Most systems you position at the top, and press the - key (minus key) to lower a particular boot item in the sequence. Continue to lower in order anything above the CD ROM.

the order may look something like this with the brand names varying:

HD WD-@#$#
Floppy Toshiba X!@#$#@
CD Drive Panasonic @#$#$@

Then when your system first fires up, goes through CMOS, it will read the CD drive looking for something executable before it goes to your problem hard drive version of windows.

You want it to look like this:
CD Drive Panasonic @#$#@@
Hard Drive !@#$@#
Floppy !@#$!$

That way, it always looks in the CD rom for something bootable first, then it goes to the HD where Windows is normally located. Unless you have a windows CD in the CD Drive, it will always drop down to the next bootable drive.

Make sense?

To exit CMOS, usually just press escape until it says "Exit and Save changes"? Press yes, to exit and save, then it will reboot and pick up your CD drive first.

Then you should see the "R" for repair option after the XP disc startup takes place.

Still trying,,

I was able to get into CMOS once,
but could not see anything to change the boot drive.

Strange that sometimes I can start up in safe mode and some times it just won't start up at all.

A couple of times it did start up normally and I actually got online only to soon get the Blue screen and crash.
This happened twice.

Anyways,,
I will try again to get into CMOS ,,f1 or del.

OKAY,,I hate my computer..
Maybe I will just buy a new one..
Actually ,,should I reinstall Windows XP?

Hmmm, you got in a couple of times, this is perplexing. If you have an owners manual, it will tell you the correct key to press to get into CMOS. Different manufacturers seem to use different keys.

Once in, you should use the arrow across keys on your keypad to go to the next selection. Most every CMOS I have ever seen operates this way. Probably about the 3rd tab over to the disc boot section.

Well, reinstalling XP might help, but then you may loose stuff you want to keep on hand. I don't know man.

Like I am one to ask about computers right now. I just had my second hard drive failure in a week! DAMN!!! This is on my workbench computer. I only booted it to see if I had a random number generator on it. But I didn't even have a data drive, as that sucker went out last year. So, no data, then I started to move the computer, and it started WHIRING. Tried rebooting, and it's toast!

Damn.

Andrew- (you don't ever go by Andy do you?) You're right. I can actually locate most geographical places at the national, regional, and major location level. I could tell you where most major seas, mountain ranges are, etc. I've learned a lot over the years, but like many people can always learn more. Someone told me once that "War is God's way of teaching Americans geography".

Take that for what you will. I suppose because we've never invaded Saskatchewan, I don't know where it is.

Which reminds me of the movie "Canadian Bacon", which I find hilarious. Really brings out the most ironic and funny parts of both of our countries.

Unfortunately, BMW does the exclusive thing, where only BMW phones will interface with their system to integrate with the factory radio, speakers, and navigational computer. (there may be a way to make another phone fully work, but nobody's found it yet) BMW has been trying to release a Bluetooth phone for their cars, but have had production problems. It's currently not scheduled until this fall. Hope the computer heals!

U2- My all time favorite group. The Edge plays a guitar like nobody else. Eddie Van Halen or Phil Keaggy may be better players, but I just love The Edge's style.

My all time favorite video: I don't think anything in the world is more peaceful to me than playing "Bad" in the dark, just letting Adam's bass resonate through me while Bono mixes the song with "Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday"

Trevor if you can get into safe mode try running the install program that should be at the root of your XP CD...it might prompt you to just do a recovery then which you should try first...if that doesn't work try it again only do a reinstall instead.

FYI XP can use either FAT32 or NTFS its upto the user which they want to run on.

I can't get past this message now:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.

SYSTEM 32\\Drivers\\ntfs.sys

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows set-up using the original Set-up CD Rom.
Select R at the first screen to start repair."

It comes up in a continious cycle, then the computer restarts over and over.. :?
The safe screen start-up doesn't come up anymore, in which it did once in a while before.
Is there a specific key to press to get into safe mode on demand.
Whatever i was doing before to get into it isn't working now.

Hi Lex,,I deeply sympathize with the loss of the HD.
It is so frustrating when anything goes wrong with your computer.
Not until you can't use it do you realize how important it is to your daily routines.
It has definately replaced Television for me.
Loosing my pictures on my HD would be devestating to me..Anybody I am sure.
Pictures I have taken of the kids and family stuff.

I did do what you said last night and was getting the Error code 4 message. You had sent me to a Website that had some traouble shooters for that message.. Basically unplugging all devices.
That didn't work for me though.. :?

Is there a specific way to get into SAFE MODE??

Thanks Trevor, I definitely lost some photos I didn't want to loose. Fortunately, NOT all of them though. I don't think I lost much on this latest hard drive, it was mostly an operating system and a few programs.

But still, the HD had not been used heavily, there's really no excuse for this. Just a piss poor product. A quantum drive.

Goodluck, I still don't get why you couldn't get windows to boot from the CD though.

Another option would be to create or borrow a windows 98 boot floppy. Boot to an A prompt with CD ROM support, then start the windows CD from there and hopefully go to the R for repair option.

This strange..
I try again and it starts up as normally..
meaning windows XP starts up and runs, However within
a minute it crashes with the blue screen.

Anyways , I was able to get the XP disc going and attempt to update Windows XP..Everything is going through the motions. I had to enter the KeY Code etc.. It seems to be updating files ,,
Then I get an error message that Set-Up can not copy file..

sfmmgr.hlp

So I press enter to retry or continue. Retrying doesn't work so I continue without the file..
During this process , I run across other files that won't copy.
They were..

-snmpcon.chm
-speech.chm
-splash.chm
-signin.hlp

So finally all the copying is at 100% except for the mentioned files..
Then I get this message:

Setup can not set the required Windows XP configuration information.
This indicates an internal set-up error

So now I reboot and get this message:

Verifying DMI Pool Data...................
NTLDR is missing
Press ctrl+alt+del to restart.

This process continues over and over,,it won't let me do anything else or go any further.

I will try the f8 key , Kevin..

Hello everyone, sorry I have been so out of touch, I'm not sure what the hell I'm doing with myself. I don't mean to be so distant and you guys have all been great friends to me, so I should make more of an effort, My appologies ;x(

Trev, I'm not sure off the top of my head what may be the problem, but it seems like a sector of your drive has corrupt files that is not allowing XP to start. The only way I know of fixing that is to use the XP restore console like so many here have suggested. Now it seems as if even at that point the system is tripping up so a lot of files may be borked. If the restore console can't fix what is up there is no recourse that I know of (yet) other than a re-install of windows. I'll do some reading on this tonight. What is perplexing me is that you are able to get windows to load at random times, this leads me to believe your hard drive may be failing, but it's tough to tell from here.

I can come over and have a look when ever you would like. No guarantees, but we can have a look. If you are going to install a new motherboard you will most likely have to re-install the OS. Now if you have saved all of your important files to the separate partition (other than C:) we should be ok and you'll lose a minamal amount of pertinate files.

Let me know when is good for you.

Morning folks. OSIM again. Is it me or do these Mondays seem to be coming at me at an ever increasing pace!? And of course it's cold again. Single digits/teens this morning, and it's the middle of March! This madness has to end before I run out of wood. I'm getting sick of stoking the fire at 2-3 a.m.

Otherwise, it's just another day, another nickel. Not enough to buy toys with, though I have a couple of consulting leads. I'll be calling one of them tonight, someone who wants a system he wrote in Excel rewritten in VB and Access. Sounds like it'll be a fun little project.I suggest removing the reference to WM here. Don't want to see anyone get in a bind from search engne info.Ok, now you got me curious!? :? Do I dare ask what a "WM" is? You can obfuscate the answer if you're concerned about search engines.

Oh, Trevor, the other computer expert here. With so many files going "bad", I'd suspect either a hard drive or RAM problem. There are utilities floating around the net for testing both, you might want to try those out to rule out a hardware problem before reinstalling XP.

Speaking of computers and OS issues, I downloaded a new version of sendmail for my Linux box, because of the major security flaw that was found a week or two ago. Now I have to figure out how to make it work. Apparently the configuration is different in 8.12 than it was in 8.9, since it complained when I tried to just replace the executable and run it. Just another one of my little projects.

I got to play plumber over the weekend, as I fixed a dripping bathtub faucet and replaced a broken spray nozzle on the kitchen sink. The operations were successful, though not as smooth as I had hoped. I guess if I lose my job I shouldn't be a plumber. :)

And by the way, "washerless" faucets stil have washers, they just call them "seals" instead of "washers". :)

Good moaning! It is another Monday!

The flip brings back memories Chris.... nice! Yes, U2 - Joshua Tree.... very good album!

Speaking of Ruby Tuesday, we ate at Ruby Tuesday's Saturday night. Very good food.

Back on the political arena in a joking way:

Five surgeons are discussing who makes the best patients to operate on.

The first surgeon says, "I like to see accountants on my operating table, because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered."

The second responds, "Yeah, but you should try electricians! Everything inside them is color coded."

The third surgeon says, "No, I really think librarians are the best; everything inside them is in alphabetical order."

The fourth surgeon chimes in: "You know, I like construction workers... those guys always understand when you have a few parts left over at the end, and when the job takes longer than you said it would."

But the fifth surgeon shut them all up when he observed: "You're all wrong. Politicians are the easiest to operate on. There's no guts, no heart, no balls, no brains and no spine, and the head and the asz are interchangeable!"
