DVI

Is DVI with 480P or 1080I ready for primetime on RPTVs? I see a lot of new RPTVs coming with this feature, is this the new standard or are they going to come up with some 780 DVI or something? Curious. This is a weak point for me, all the various aspect ratios, and especially the DVI "standard" or is there a real standard yet?

There are three things you got to think about with DV.
1. Source 480/720/1080 i/p
2. What you can input into a display
3. What the display can really show (Native)

You can put a 1080i signal in to a 50 inch plasma from Pioneer but this display is 720p native, built in video scaler. V inc and Samsungs DVD players with DVI both have built in scalers. Ex: 480 output at 1080

The "standard" is looking more and more like HDMI, it looks like a smaller DVI with less pins. Pioneer, will have to new plasmas this fall with HDMI connections. Others will be switching to this too.

Since DVI and HDMI ( you could call it mini DVI 2.0 ) are at high-data rates there with not be a standard source signal (480/720/1080) but a range say 480p/DVD to 1080p/D-VHS.

DVI for PCs ( what the CE corps seem to want )
- video only

HDMI for CE ( DVDplayers, LCD projectors, etc...)
- High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection
- Audio and video

One comment. If you are thinking about staying with a Pioneer, don't expect any kind of help from so-called "Customer Support". They won't commit to anything substantive input-wise.

Jaakan, thanks for the informative post. This just doesn't get any easier, does it? LOL.

David, I'm not sure I would go Elite again for the money. Just to much of it. Maybe, but not until all standards are established.

I'll probably wind up getting mine fixed. As long as it's less than a thousand, I think that's the smart move with all these standards on the move.

It looks like it's going to cost 120.00 to get it evaluated in home, then go from there.

I just wanted to try and understand what if any standards for HD DVD have been established. I will not buy another display until that's ironed out. I'll revert to my 36" console first. Or get an interim solution of some kind if my Elite is cost prohibitive to repair.
